From the Board Chair and Executive Director 

Hello Friends and Partners in the fight against hunger: 

The 2005 fiscal year summarized in this annual report was one of challenges and achievements for Second Harvest Heartland 

and the 800 member agencies we serve. The worldwide impact of December’s tsunami and September’s Hurricanes 

Katrina and Rita challenged us to simultaneously support the disaster response efforts while continuing to provide for 

those in our service area who face hunger day in and day out. 

As a member of America’s Second Harvest, we are part of the national disaster response. Through the generosity of our 

donors, we were able to provide over half a million pounds of grocery products to the Gulf States and to send staff with 

needed expertise in logistics to the disaster sites. 

We also learned more about local hunger. We conducted a major hunger study in cooperation with America’s Second 

Harvest to gain an updated profile of the hungry in our region and throughout the country. The results, just released, portray 

increasing incidence of chronic hunger, especially among children, the elderly and the working poor. Nearly 170,000 of 

our vulnerable community members are now being served each month, a 45% increase since 2001. Some of the stories 

of the rapidly increasing numbers of those who need emergency food more regularly were chronicled in Second Harvest 

Heartland’s 28-minute video entitled, “Changing Face of Hunger,” which was produced and debuted on Twin Cities Public 

Television in October. 

As this report goes to print, Second Harvest Heartland finds itself engaged in a whirlwind of activities designed to help us 

more effectively carry out our mission. We are currently fundraising for a $600,000 expansion to our freezer and cooler in 

order to accommodate an increase in perishable products being donated. The expansion will also help us carry out one of our 

strategic objectives of providing more nutritional balance to complement the non-perishable foods traditionally donated. 

In the current fiscal year our Board of Directors has identified the need to take an even more active role in fundraising, and 

to focus its governance efforts in the areas of vision, strategy and policy development. 

As you peruse the program highlights and accomplishments contained in the 2005 Annual Report, please note the final 

pages, where we acknowledge as many of the contributions of you, our partners in the cause of hunger-relief, as space 

permits. Your ongoing commitment of time, food and money are essential components to continuing our efforts. The trust

2005 Annual Report

The State of Hunger in the Heartland 

In 2005, Second Harvest Heartland participated in the fourth national Hunger in America 

study sponsored by America’s Second Harvest – the Nation’s Food Bank Network. The 

results not only provide invaluable information about the emergency food network, but 

also about the people - the families, children and seniors - that are served by our network. 

Second Harvest Heartland staff, board members and volunteers collected 460 in-depth 

individual client interviews at 50 metro, suburban and rural food shelves, soup kitchens 

and shelters and 432 member agencies responded to an agency survey. 

What the results reveal: Many low-income working families don’t earn enough money 

to pay the bills and eat everyday. In the 59-counties Second Harvest Heartland 

serves in Minnesota and western Wisconsin, 47% of households 

using emergency food report that their main source of income is 

paid employment. 

Program Highlights 

• 80% of household earned less than $20,000 

• 50% of food shelf households had children younger than 18 

• 93% of people using emergency food are U.S. citizens 

• 73% are registered voters

Second Harvest Heartland distributes food and grocery products to emergency food 

providers in 41 Minnesota counties and 18 Wisconsin counties. 

Food Bank – Second Harvest Heartland leads the nation in food bank technology. Pallet 

scanning and inventory tracking systems have increased productivity and made receiving and 

handling 22 million pounds of food and grocery products more efficient and accurate. Food 

manufacturers, government programs and the community donate grocery items to the Food 

Bank for distribution to our 800 member agencies, including food shelves, soup kitchens, 

shelters and other social service programs. 

Food Rescue – Twelve Baskets – Second Harvest Heartland has one of three Food Rescue 

Programs in the nation that uses handheld technology to provide truck and driver status 

and poundage reports in real time. Using this system, nearly 2 million pounds of prepared 

and perishable food was collected from 150 Twin Cities area restaurants and retail markets 

and delivered in refrigerated trucks to 60 member agencies. 

Supplemental Food Program – This program provides 40-pound boxes of nutritionally 

balanced USDA food every month to 10,000 income-eligible pregnant and post-partum 

women, children up to the age of six and seniors 60 years and over. An innovative data 

management software system was introduced this year, and all 150 distribution sites report 

reduced paperwork and increased efficiency. In 2005, this program distributed 5 million 

pounds of food. 

Child Hunger Programs – There has been a 50% increase in the number of member agencies 

that participate in summer and after-school programs reimbursed through the USDA. 

Our advisory role has been expanded with the creation of a nutrition lending library and 

frequent communication on topics that include the new food pyramid, healthy, kid-friendly 

recipes and the importance of good nutrition and exercise in childhood development. 

Senior Programs – Residents at 12 metro area senior high-rises look forward to food 

delivery from Second Harvest Heartland’s Senior Food for Health. Second Harvest 

Heartland also partners with six area Meals on Wheels Programs to make direct fresh 

produce deliveries for our Produce for Seniors Program. Participating agencies receive a 

monthly Senior Nutrition Newsletter.

In 2005, Minnesota’s Six Food Banks Received 

$150,000 in State Funds to Purchase Milk 

Providing low-income children with milk is critical to Minnesota’s goal of school-ready 

children, and 50% of those served by Minnesota’s food banks and member agencies are 

low-income children. Due to fixed expenses, like rent and utilities, low-income families are 

often unable to afford to buy milk and unfortunately, food banks do not receive sufficient 

donations. 

In a Second Harvest Heartland led initiative, the State Legislature awarded a one-time 

grant in the amount of $150,000 for Minnesota’s six Second Harvest Food Banks to 

purchase fluid milk. We are again seeking supplemental funds this legislative session to 

provide more milk to those most in need. 

The number of individuals served by Second Harvest Heartland member agencies rose 

to 169,600 per month in 2005, which is a 45% increase compared to 2001. 

The staff and volunteers at the Anoka County Brotherhood Council (ACBC) Food Shelf in Anoka, MN, 

serve families in crisis who come in for a short period of time as well as those who rely on the food shelf every 

month. Cheryl Gross, Executive Director at ACBC, said that for some families, “no matter how they 

budget, there just isn’t enough money to get through the month and eat everyday.” The suburban food shelf 

located in the northern metro area assists an average of 450 families each month. They are supported locally 

through food drives, monetary donations and food bags purchased at grocery store check-outs. At least 30% 

of the food ACBC distributes comes from Second Harvest Heartland. Gross believes that food shelves can 

only continue serving hungry families with the generous support of businesses, individuals, community 

groups and hunger relief partners, like Second Harvest Heartland. She said, “It’s important that support 

doesn’t go away, because hungry families aren’t going to go away.” 

Member Agencies 

Second Harvest Heartland distributes food to 800 member emergency and social service 

agencies in 59-counties in Minnesota and western Wisconsin. 

Emergency food providers include food shelves, soup kitchens and shelters. Individuals 

and families use these services when they are at high risk of hunger or food insecurity. We 

also assist agencies that provide other social services to those in need, including group 

homes, halfway houses and low-income daycare providers. The people receiving help from 

one of these organizations are susceptible to hunger or food insecurity, but this may be 

secondary to the service they are seeking. 

Within these categories and directly, Second Harvest Heartland focuses on children 

and seniors. Our Child Hunger, Senior and Supplemental Food Programs partner with 

member agencies and offer direct services, including nutrition education, supplemental 

food boxes, healthy snacks and meals, fresh produce and homebound delivery services.

About 155 families receive food each month from the Renville 

County Food Shelf in Olivia, MN. Food Shelf President, 

Artis Wertish, said their organization receives about 75% of 

their food from Second Harvest Heartland’s once a month, 

door-to-door delivery. “If we had to buy food from the grocery 

store, we would pay just as much for a box of cereal as we do 

for the handling fees on a case of cereal delivered by Second 

Harvest Heartland.”

Hunger is a hidden need. Many working families may look fine 

to the outside world, but there’s just not enough food at home. We 

all want to believe that every kid gets breakfast before they go to 

school, but that’s not true. No one should have to skip meals because 

the cupboards are bare. It’s hard to see visible evidence of hunger, 

but the emotional, mental and physical impact is very real. We

Every couple of days at least one 

of Second Harvest Heartland’s 

programs, including the Food Bank, 

Purchase, Produce and Supplemental 

Food Programs and Twelve Baskets 

Food Rescue, delivers food to the 

Pillsbury United Communities 

Waite House in Minneapolis. With 

generous community support and by 

using all of the available hunger relief 

services in the metro area, the Waite 

House Food Shelf is able to serve an 

average of 600 people each month 

and the Community Cafe provides 

235 meals, five days a week. The food 

provided at Waite House is more than 

just a kindness said Kay Cunningham, 

Waite House Basic Needs Manager. 

“One of our participants shared with 

me that for the past few months the 

cafe lunch was her only meal of the 

day. It was all she had and gave her the 

sustenance to keep going.”
