Director of Public Health Annual Report 2011
and to identify ways to increase level one and
two provision. Research has shown that more
people have, or would, consult their GP about
contraception or sexual health in preference
to other health care providers. For around
80% of women, GPs are the preferred
providers of contraception.
Pharmacy
The role of pharmacists as providers of
contraception and sexual health advice and
services has broadened over the last decade.
An increasing number of pharmacies have
been commissioned to prescribe emergency
hormonal contraception and to provide
chlamydia screening and treatment. We will
work with our local pharmacies to assess
future opportunities for broadening the
sexual health provision they provide.
Review of our performance
In March 2011, North Somerset took part in a
peer review to assess the effectiveness of local
sexual health services. We were visited by a
team of 11 professionals involved in sexual
health services across the South West. The
peer review team consisted of doctors, nurses
and managers who met those involved in
commissioning and providing sexual health
services locally.
The review team’s final report was published
in July 2011 and gave praise to the strategic
approach taken by the many organisations
concerned with sexual health in North
Somerset. The report recognised the
commitment locally to providing frontline
services for young people and the desire to
engage young people on their terms to
encourage ownership of sexual health
services. It recognised strong executive and
commissioning leadership, with a clear
commitment to improving sexual health
outcomes and commended the leadership
shown through the Weston Integrated Sexual
Health (WISH) Centre.
The report set out a number of recommend -
ations which have since been included within
the North Somerset Sexual Health and HIV
delivery plan 22 . The review team suggested
that further improvements could be made by
providing a medical abortion service within
North Somerset and further strengthening
services at the Weston Integrated Sexual
Health (WISH) Centre and within GP practices.
