Director of Public Health Annual Report 2011
Recommendations
1. Focus on prevention, particularly to
address the interlinked behaviours of
alcohol, drugs and unsafe sex. Sex and
relationship education programmes should
be maintained and developed and
contraceptive services targeted at those at
greatest risk.
2. Focus on men, particularly young men and
men who have sex with men, in order to
increase levels of testing for sexually
transmitted infections and reduce levels of
undiagnosed and late diagnosed HIV
infection.
3. Reduce levels of child poverty to break the
intergenerational cycle of teenage
pregnancy and ensure where possible that
any service changes or budget reductions
do not disproportionately affect those at
greatest risk of teenage pregnancy.
4. Develop a clear sexual health care
pathway so professionals and the public
understand what each service (including
GP practices, ‘No Worries!’ Teenage Health
Service and the Weston Integrated Sexual
Health (WISH) Centre) provides and how
these services relate to each other.
5. Strengthen community provision of
contraceptive and sexually transmitted
infection services, ensuring through staff
training, audit and monitoring the quality
of services is high.
6. Improve data collection to ensure we
understand the level of sexually
transmitted infections in our community,
which groups experience poor sexual
health and access services, and the quality
of those services.
