Accommodating
Eulah is warm, welcoming and restful – it’s
the kind of place you slip into effortlessly.
Everything is so well chosen and in tune
with the character of the fine old building.
Plush furnishings, bold colour schemes in
dark reds, rich blues and striking greens
predominate. Armchairs and sofas are made
to sink into. Large beds are a mix of styles;
one is a half-tester, another has a
headboard in Versailles-style gilt.
Eulah’s vast bathrooms have received the
same bespoke touch. I could stand in my
shower and look out to sea. But if you want
something really different, ask for the fourposter
bath. Eulah offers the kind of
opulent living that’s a world away from
those old notions of B&B.
My last destination was a self-catering
beach house. But being Jersey this wasn’t
just any old beach house. In fact, the
delightful Barge Aground looks exactly like
its name: the holiday bungalow is shaped like
a grounded boat, complete with portholes
and flagpole. The only survivor of a
collection of beach houses built in the
1930s along St Ouen’s Bay, it’s now
marooned in splendid isolation on the shore,
causing confusion and amusement to
passing travellers. It’s quirky and very Jersey.
The front door opens into a spacious living
room running the width of the building with
light streaming in through portholes on
both sides. Go to the stern end and you’ll
find two bedrooms with bunk beds. For the
kitchen and bathroom you’ll need to head
for the prow. The single-storey building has
been beautifully restored in pre-war style
with wooden parquet floors and pretty
chintz furnishings. Outside, steps lead
down to the sea wall and beach. You fall
asleep lulled by the sounds of the waves
and wake up to the call of seagulls, so it’s
almost like being on a bona fide boat. It’s a
perfect place for families.
Barge Aground is one of a collection of odd
and historic buildings given a new lease of
life by the Jersey Heritage Trust. Redundant
coastal fortifications have been converted
into self-catering accommodation with a
difference – and with uniformly stunning sea
views. The choice is wonderfully eccentric.
There’s the former officers’ quarters in Grève
de Lecq Barracks, for example, or an
apartment in Elizabeth Castle, St Helier, that
gets cut off at high tide. If you really want to
play king of the castle book yourself into one
of the historic forts – La Crête, Leicester or
L’Etacquerel – carved into the cliffs on
Jersey’s rugged, rocky north coast. Built in
the 19th century, they now offer 21stcentury
comforts alongside the many hotels
in Jersey that have benefited from huge
investment in recent years.
Saints Alive
Recent massive investment means that
St Helier now has the best quality range of
hotel accommodation measured by size of
population in the whole of the UK. The
expansion began in 2005 with the
opening of the contemporary boutique
hotel, The Club Hotel & Spa
(www.theclubjersey.com). Its success,
particularly in winning its first Michelin
star, has attracted a dynamic, new clientele.
The latest brand-new hotel to open is the
£50-million Radisson SAS Waterfront
Hotel (www.jersey.radissonsas.com). The
hotel is right on the marina, but close to
the town centre and burgeoning financial
district. A recent £14-million investment
in The Grand Jersey (www.grandjersey.com)
has completely transformed this longestablished
landmark. The hotel’s
fizzy new Champagne Lounge is a huge
success, and bedrooms have gone from
staid to stunning.
The Royal Yacht Hotel
(www.theroyalyacht.com) is one of
Jersey’s institutions. A £35-million
investment has given it a totally new
look, increased guest rooms to 110
(most with a balcony or terrace), and
added bars, restaurants and conference
facilities. Nearby, the 158-year-old
Pomme d’Or Hotel
(www.seymourhotels.com) has new,
larger bedrooms and upgraded business
facilities following a £5-million
refurbishment. Just outside the town
centre, the elegant Hotel de France has
recently added a top-of-the-range
Ayush (Ayurvedic) Wellness Spa, four
new swimming pools, sauna, steam
room and gym (www.defrance.co.uk).
