News from the CHAPLAIN
Right now we are smack bang in the middle of one of the most stressful times of year for
students (and their families!). Exams, assignments, deadlines, family pressures, social
interactions and expectations of others and ourselves, all combine together to make a
claim on our time and attention. The pressure of it all can lead us to a place where we
want to just give up. So I thought it would be a great idea to point towards some
resources and places we can get help, so we can tackle the challenges and changes we face
in life.
The Bible gives us some actions we can take in times of trouble ‐ Galations 6:2 “Bear one
another’s burdens and so fulfil the commandment of Christ”. By acting in love towards
others and asking them “Are you OK?”, or being there for some one as a friendly ear that
will listen to what they are going through can be a huge help.
Just by Google‐ing “Scriptures to help with Stress” you can find out what God says and
does for those who feel under pressure.
My presence will go with you, and I will give you rest. (Exodus 33:14)
It is the Lord who goes before you. He will be with you; he will not fail you or forsake you.
Do not fear or be dismayed. (Deuteronomy 31:8) The eternal God is your refuge, and
underneath are the everlasting arms. (Deuteronomy 33:27)
The Lord is a refuge for the oppressed, a stronghold in times of trouble. (Psalm 9:9‐10)
I have set the Lord always before me. Because he is at my right hand, I will not be shaken. (Psalm 16:8)
The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?
Though an army encamp against me, my heart shall not fear; though war rise up against me, yet I will be confident.
(Psalm 27: 1, 3) You are my hiding place; you will protect me from trouble and surround me with songs of deliverance.
(Psalm 32:7‐8) I sought the Lord, and he answered me, and delivered me from all my fears. (Psalm 34:4)
33
But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all
these things will be given to you as well. 34 Therefore do not
worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself.
Each day has enough trouble of its own.
MUSIC DEPARTMENT
This Term, in many ways, is the busiest for the music
department. We have already heard Sam Ryan playing the
piano to welcome students into and out of the assembly;
and Sarah Nelson played Bach’s Prelude in C – and a
beautiful rendition it was too; Alicia Walker sang
accompanied by Sam Ryan. In Week 4 the choir, jazz band
and string quartet will be in action as part of our Awards night
at the Brolga; in Week 6 the choir will be performing as part
of our remembrance service and in week 8 the choir will
again be in action in our annual Nine Lessons service.
For all of this to happen, however, it is imperative that the
students practise and attend rehearsals, if you could please
encourage them that would be fantastic. There is always
room for new recruits – so please encourage your child to join
and celebrate with us.
Second Hand Middle/Senior College Blouse
As the 2012 school year comes to a close we also come to the
end of a 2 year ‘change‐over’ period where a new middle school
and senior school blouse was introduced and the original blouse
phased out.
You may have the old style blouse for sale through our uniform
shop and so I regret to inform you that I am not permitted to
sell it as it is no longer part of the Riverside student uniform.
You are most welcome to have it returned to you. Please phone
me on 0429 787 982 to make arrangements.
All unclaimed, old style, uniform blouses will become part of our
Any other uniform items that you may have on consignment will
WASTE MANAGEMENT AT RIVERSIDE
Riverside students are asked to put their rubbish in
different bins in order for the College to better
manage our waste. 3 bins are available in eating
areas ‐ yellow top recycle bins (like the ones at home),
red top bins for garbage that can't be reused or
recycled, and small green top bins for food waste that
can be composted. Our aim is to decrease our
'landfill' rubbish by 1/3, simply by recycling and
composting.
Please encourage your child/ren to put their
rubbish in the correct bins.
This year we have students and staff who suffer from
allergies and they must be very careful not to come into
contact with certain foods. Therefore we request that where
possible, the following foods: Eggs, Peanuts and Seafood
be avoided at the College.
We value the well-being of each one in
our Riverside community, let’s make the
College a safe place for all.
Thank you!
Caring for our needy is a practical way that students
can learn the importance of community work and
support.
Class Lists for 2013
It is important for the College to have a transparent process
for compiling class lists for each new year. The compilation
of class lists is not a quick or easy exercise and much time,
thought and prayer is put into the process.
It is understandable that families have a lot invested in
which class they prefer. The College acknowledges that
parents know their children best, in non‐school contexts,
and respect the insights parents may have in relation to
placement of their children. This procedure gives an
opportunity for parents to share these insights with the
College so that they may be considered when classes are
formed.
PROCEDURE
A. Parents are notified via the newsletter in Term 4 that class lists
are being compiled. If parents desire to have input into the
compilation process, they may do so in writing to the Head of
College, no later than Week 7 of Term 4.
B. Current teachers of students advise Head of College about:
1. general academic ability
2. behavioural patterns
3. social groupings
C. EdZone (Education Support Unit) provides input to Head of College
D. The strengths and input of the potential next year’s teachers
are considered
E. The Head of College, in consultation with staff, compiles class
lists whilst giving full consideration to class numbers, gender
balance, behavioural demands, parent insights, general
ability, social needs, timetabling and the like.
F. Lists are displayed at the College the workday before Term 1
begins.
G. The lists as published are final.
H. The Principal is the only person in the College who may, in
exceptional circumstances, alter the class allocations after
lists are published.
DEADLINE FOR NOTIFICATION ‐ FRIDAY 23 NOVEMBER
Fiji Mission Students have had the most incredible
experience here are some of their comments:
Kira Abell (pictured left)
Hosting the kids klub and youth group at CCCC. Meeting lots of new
people at CCCC and in the village. They made me feel welcome and had a
good birthday. Missing the village now we are at the resort. I can survive
without Internet and parents, have fun no matter where I am. Challenge
having no hot water – it was like snow coming out of the shower
Jessica Brady
Being at the village they are always happy and make you feel welcome
they don’t have that much and they are so much happier than us all the
time and find happiness in the smallest things. I learnt just to be patient
and not to judge people. Even though it was hard to be without all the
things I have at home is still worthwhile to see al the people and talk to
them.
Andrew Chapman
I decided to come back as I missed out a lot last time as I was sick. I would
love to come back again. Loved the whole trip, a part from getting sick. So
happy and joyful towards everyone they follow you around and enjoy
talking about what they do and their culture and beliefs.
Hi guys....
There are some very busy people at present trying very
hard to set things up on the new College Agriculture
property so the children can have lessons at the new
farm next year.
These volunteers would really love a few extra hands to
make the load lighter. If you are a skilled person with
tools and are not afraid to work in the hot sun for the
day you would be most welcome. The main task
needing to be completed at this stage is fencing.
Oh what fun!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
