President’s Message<br />
President Peter MacKinnon<br />
I wish to express a very warm welcome to the graduates<br />
<strong>of</strong> our certificate programs, and their families and<br />
friends who join us today to celebrate this significant<br />
event.<br />
Ceremonies are an important part <strong>of</strong> the life <strong>of</strong> the<br />
<strong>University</strong>, and graduation is one <strong>of</strong> the most important<br />
ceremonies <strong>of</strong> all. It is our celebration—with you and<br />
for you. It is during this ceremony that we celebrate and<br />
recognize your accomplishments and achievements and<br />
the contributions and support <strong>of</strong> your loved ones to<br />
your success. You should feel proud <strong>of</strong> this day and <strong>of</strong> the commitment and sacrifice that it<br />
represents.<br />
Some <strong>of</strong> you are employees <strong>of</strong> the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Saskatchewan and will therefore continue<br />
to be in touch with us. Many <strong>of</strong> you are residents <strong>of</strong> Saskatoon and the nearby community,<br />
but no matter where you are, it is my wish that each and every one <strong>of</strong> you continue to stay<br />
associated to our <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Saskatchewan alumni family, and that we will have the<br />
opportunity to welcome you back to campus many times in the years ahead.<br />

The Chancellor<br />
VERA PEZER<br />
Dr. Pezer has a long association with the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />
Saskatchewan, earning her undergraduate and graduate<br />
degrees from the university and serving as associate<br />
vice‐president (Student Affairs and Services) from<br />
1991–2001. Dr. Pezer first joined the university in 1966<br />
in Student Counselling Services and as a part‐time<br />
instructor in the Department <strong>of</strong> Psychology. She<br />
would later become director <strong>of</strong> student counselling, an<br />
assistant pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> psychology and assistant dean,<br />
College <strong>of</strong> Arts and Science. Under her leadership,<br />
student retention and academic success were enhanced and the university’s first <strong>of</strong>fices<br />
dedicated to student emergency financial assistance, disability services for students, and<br />
aboriginal student support programs established.<br />
She has held volunteer and leadership roles with the Saskatoon Board <strong>of</strong> Police<br />
Commissioners, Saskatchewan Centennial Gala, Hope Cancer Race for Recovery,<br />
Saskatoon Housing Coalition, Persephone Theatre and the YWCA. Dr. Pezer has also<br />
contributed widely to pr<strong>of</strong>essional and amateur sports organizations. She is a member<br />
and current chair <strong>of</strong> the 1989 Jeux Canada Games Foundation, director <strong>of</strong> the 1991 Scott<br />
Tournament <strong>of</strong> Hearts and ceremonies chair <strong>of</strong> the 1989 Brier. As a sport psychologist,<br />
Dr. Pezer served as an adviser and trainer to Canadian curling teams in two Olympic<br />
Games.<br />
An accomplished athlete in her own right, Dr. Pezer is a four-time Canadian ladies’ curling<br />
champion, a Canadian s<strong>of</strong>tball champion, and two‐time member <strong>of</strong> the Saskatchewan<br />
senior women’s golf team. She has received a place <strong>of</strong> honour in the Saskatoon and<br />
Saskatchewan Sports Halls <strong>of</strong> Fame and in the Canadian Curling Hall <strong>of</strong> Fame. In 2003,<br />
Dr. Pezer completed her first book, The Stone Age: A Social History <strong>of</strong> Curling in the<br />
Prairies. She has just published her second, titled Smart Curling. Dr. Pezer was honoured<br />
with a Saskatchewan Centennial Medal in 2006, and in 2002, received the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />
Saskatchewan Alumni Award <strong>of</strong> Achievement.<br />

President MacKinnon will step down from his role<br />
as president <strong>of</strong> the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Saskatchewan as<br />
<strong>of</strong> June 30, 2012, but his legacy will remain.<br />
The success <strong>of</strong> the U <strong>of</strong> S under President MacKinnon was trumped only<br />
by his ambitions for the university, which continue to set our course moving<br />
forward.<br />
With President MacKinnon as our president, the U <strong>of</strong> S has grown in many<br />
ways. We are welcoming more students from more places around the world,<br />
we are physically expanding to accommodate the important research,<br />
learning and discovery taking place on our campus, and we are building<br />
deeper connections with the communities around Saskatchewan and beyond.<br />
We move forward from President MacKinnon’s tenure more proud <strong>of</strong> our<br />
accomplishments, with bigger dreams for the future and confident that we<br />
can achieve anything we aspire towards.<br />
