The ChancellorW. T. (Tom) MolloyTom Molloy was born and raised in Saskatoon. Heattended St. Thomas More College and later theCollege of Law, both at the University of Saskatchewan.He received his B.A. and LL.B. in 1964. He haspracticed law in Saskatoon sincegraduation and is with theMacPherson Leslie & Tyerman’sSaskatoon office. He has representedthe Government of Canada as theChief Federal Negotiator in thesuccessfully concluded treaties inNunavut and with the Nisga’a inBritish Columbia and an Agreementin Principle with the Sechelt IndianBand. He presently represents Canadain treaty negotiations in BritishColumbia, Quebec, New Brunswick,Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Islandand Nunavut. Mr. Molloy has beendescribed as “Canada’s most experttreaty negotiator.”Mr. Molloy recently authored a book The World is ourWitness: The Historic Journey of the Nisga’a into Canada.The book has won two Saskatchewan Book Awards, TheBrenda MacDonald Riches First Book Award and theNon-fiction Award which was sponsored by theUniversity of Saskatchewan.For his work in the community he has received anumber of awards including the City of SaskatoonCertificate of Distinguished Community Service; RotaryGolden Wheels Award for Excellence, Saskatoon B’naiBrith “Proud of You Award” and the Head of the PublicService Award for Excellence inService Delivery.In 1996 he was made an officer of theOrder of Canada, with a citation thatreads: He is widely known for his role asChief Negotiator for the Government ofCanada in the Nunavut Land ClaimAgreement. His integrity, commitment toa just settlement and personable rapporthave also been valuable in his leadershipof numerous cultural, educational andcharitable groups, not only inSaskatchewan but also nationally,including the Meewasin Foundation andPRIDE Canada.The University of SaskatchewanAlumni Association awarded him the 2000 AlumniHonour Award in recognition of receiving notableacclaim for professional achievements, which in turnhas enhanced the image of the University ofSaskatchewan and its alumni. University of Saskatchewan2004 Spring ConvocationThe word “Convocation” arises from the Latin “con”meaning “together,” and “vocare” meaning “to call.”Our Convocation ceremony is a calling together of thenew graduates of the Universityof Saskatchewan, symbolizingthe historical practice of callingtogether all former graduates. Incurrent times, the majorfunctions of Convocation arethe election of representativesto University governing bodiesand the admission of candidatesto degrees. The Chancellor,elected by Convocation as itsChair, is the highest official andspokesperson of the University.The Convocation ceremonymarks the transition from therole of student to the holder ofa degree with its accompanyingrights and privileges.Candidates for degrees, knownas graduands, havingcompleted the requirements ofa course of study, arerecommended by collegefaculties and the UniversityCouncil to receive degrees from the University ofSaskatchewan.The ceremony, solemnized in the presence of theUniversity community and family and friends of thegraduands, consists of three parts: a procession markingthe leaving of the old status and entering the new; thePresident’s statement to thegraduands, the Secretary’spetition and the Chancellor’sconsent for their admission;followed by individualpresentation by their Dean andadmission by the Chancellor tothe degrees to which they areentitled. As graduates areadmitted to their degrees, agraduation hood, which has acolour symbolizing a particulardegree, is placed over eachgraduate’s head. Honorary Doctor of LawsDafydd (Dave) Rhys WilliamsBorn in Saskatoon, Dafydd (David) Rhys Williamsattended high school in Beaconsfield, Quebec. Hegraduated from McGill University with a Bachelor ofScience in Biology in 1976 and went on to obtain aMaster of Science in Physiology, aDoctorate of Medicine and a Masterof Surgery from the Faculty ofMedicine at McGill University in1983.In June 1992, the Canadian SpaceAgency selected Dr. Williams as one offour successful candidates from a fieldof 5,330 applicants to begin astronauttraining. In May 1993, he wasappointed manager of the Missions andSpace Medicine Group within theCanadian Astronaut Program.In January 1995, Dr. Williams wasselected to join the international classof NASA mission specialist astronautcandidates. He spent one year trainingat the Johnson Space Centre, and in May 1996 wasassigned to the Payloads and Habitability Branch of theNASA Astronaut Office.Dr. Williams’ first foray into space took place in April 1998aboard the space shuttle Columbia. During the 16-dayflight, called Neurolab, the seven-person crew served asboth experiment subjects and operators for 26 individuallife science experiments. These experiments, dedicated tothe advancement of neuroscience research, focused on theeffects of microgravity on the brain and the nervoussystem. Dr. Williams also functioned as the crew medicalofficer, the flight engineer during the ascent phase and wastrained to perform contingency spacewalks.During the Neurolab mission, Columbia orbited Earth256 times, covered over 10 million kilometres andspent over 381 hours in space.From July 1998 until September 2002, Dr. Williams heldthe position of Director of the Spaceand Life Sciences Directorate at theJohnson Space Centre in Texas. Withthis appointment, he became the firstnon-American to hold a seniormanagement position within NASA.He concurrently held a six-monthposition as the first Deputy AssociatedAdministrator for Crew Health andSafety in the Office of Spaceflight atNASA Headquarters in 2001.In addition to his assignments,Dr. Williams continues to take part inastronaut training. In October 2001,after training as an aquanaut, hebecame the first Canadian to have livedand worked in space and the ocean.Dr. Williams is currently training toparticipate in his second spaceflight, MissionSTS-118/13A.a. During the 11-day mission to add a trusssegment and relocate solar arrays on the InternationalSpace Station, Dr. Williams will perform three spacewalks.Many awards and special honours have been bestowedupon Dr. Williams including several Commonwealthawards and prizes. In 2002, he received the NASAOutstanding Leadership Medal, and in 2003, a NASAJohnson Space Centre Space and Life SciencesDirectorate Special Professional Achievement Award forthe implementation of the Automatic ExternalDefibrillator Program that has saved several lives at theNASA Johnson Space Centre.Dr. Williams is married and has two children.University of Saskatchewan52004 Spring Convocation

Honorary Doctor of ScienceMarcel (Marc) BaltzanDr. Baltzan was born and educated in Saskatoon andlater obtained his Doctorate of Medicine at McGillUniversity.He returned to Saskatoon in 1959 toset up a private practice in InternalMedicine and was one of the firstclinicians to set up a basic sciences labwhere he examined free fatty acids inpatients.Shortly after, Dr. Baltzan and hisbrother set up the first dialysis unit atSt. Paul’s Hospital and started one ofthe very early renal transplantprograms in Canada.Dr. Baltzan held several leadershippositions in medical education whilemaintaining a busy schedule teachingmedical students, interns andresidents on the wards of St. Paul’sHospital and Royal UniversityHospital. He would forge strong ties with the College ofMedicine at the University of Saskatchewan, serving asChair of the Department of Medicine and Professor ofMedicine.Never one to avoid a challenge, Dr. Baltzan took onPresidency of the Canadian MedicalAssociation, Saskatchewan MedicalAssociation and the Saskatoon andDistrict Medical Society.Dr. Baltzan is a man of many facets,and a master of most of them. In 1999,he was acknowledged by his peers inthe American College of Physicians,who awarded him the status of Masterof the ACP—a rare distinction. He isalso an Officer of the Order of Canada(1995), has received the SaskatchewanOrder of Merit (1999) and was namedan Innovative Canadian Physician inthe Last 35 Years by the Medical Post(2000).Dr. Baltzan is an outstanding clinician-scientist, medicaleconomist, medical organizer and educator. Earned Doctor of ScienceRajendra K. SharmaRajendra (Raj) K. Sharma was born in Hathras,India, and obtained a B.Sc. and M.Sc. from AligarhUniversity. He was awarded a Research Fellowship fromthe Council of Scientific and Industrial Research in Indiafor a Ph.D. in Biochemistry at AllIndia Institute of Medical Sciences,New Delhi. Dr. Sharma’s outstandingwork was published in the prestigiousJournal of Biological Chemistry.Awarded a Postdoctoral Fellowshipfrom the U.S. National ScienceFoundation, Dr. Sharma joined TuftsUniversity School of Medicine inBoston where his major interest wasthe folate enzyme thymidylatesynthetase, a target for cancerchemotherapeutic drugs. Dr. Sharmamoved to the University of Manitobaand then the University of Calgary,making several milestone discoveriesin the area of signal transductionsystems during his time at these institutions.Dr. Sharma joined the Department of Pathology in theCollege of Medicine at the University of Saskatchewanas an Associate Professor in 1991 and was promoted tofull professor in 1996. He is a Research Scientist in theCancer Research Centre of the Saskatchewan CancerAgency. Dr. Sharma also holds Associate Memberships inthe departments of Pharmacology and Surgery.Dr. Sharma has made oustanding contributions in thearea of colon cancer, demonstrating for the first timethe role of N-myristoyltransferase (NMT) in a ratmodel as well as in patients undergoing resection forcolon cancer. This study indicated that a significantincrease in NMT activity and expression appears at anearly stage of colon cancer.Dr. Sharma has had a long-standinginterest in biochemical regulatorymechanisms in areas involving thecardiovascular system, certain braintumors and colorectal cancer. He hasdiscovered and purified more than adozen new proteins, mostly related tothe area of signal transduction, andhas published 153 papers (115 fulllengthrefereed papers and 38 bookchapters and review articles) and coediteda book on Signal TransductionMechanisms. Dr. Sharma’s research issupported by the Canadian Institutesof Health Research and the Heart andStroke Foundation of Saskatchewan.Dr. Sharma has collaborated withseveral faculties (including the Plant BiotechnologyInstitute, National Research Council of Canada andwith several universities and institutions in Canada, theUnited States, France, India and Hong Kong); hastrained several post-doctoral fellows and students nowestablished worldwide; and has arranged symposiumsboth nationally and internationally.Dr. Sharma is a dedicated and outstanding scientist withan international reputation for conducting innovativeresearch in widely disparate areas involving enzymology,signal transduction and cancer. Master Teacher AwardJohn ThompsonEmphasizing the importance of teaching at theUniversity of Saskatchewan, the Master TeacherAward honours faculty who excel as teachers. ProfessorJohn Thompson, Department of Sociology, St. ThomasMore College, has been named asrecipient of this prestigious award atSpring Convocation, 2004.Professor Thompson earned his B.A.in Philosophy from Spring HillCollege, Alabama; his M.A. inTheology from the University ofSanta Clara, California; and his M.A.and Ph.D. in Sociology from theUniversity of California, SantaBarbara. He joined St. Thomas MoreCollege at the University ofSaskatchewan in 1975, becoming aProfessor in 1993.Dr. Thompson has a comprehensiveknowledge of his discipline,demonstrating excellence in research,publishing regularly in leading journals and presentingthe results of his research at learned conferences. AllMaster Teachers are expected to be distinguishedresearchers—however, student evaluations, comments bycolleagues and a distinguished teaching portfoliodemonstrate that Dr. Thompson is also a bright flameamong teachers at the University of Saskatchewan.John not only teaches sociology, his teaching changeslives. A former undergraduate states eloquently,“Dr. Thompson taught me how to use my brain. He alsospent laborious hours teaching all of his students how towrite. In other classes, I was always very aware that I wasonly a farmer’s wife with not much of a future.Dr. Thompson showed me that I could use mysociological imagination plus stay in my homecommunity and work with rural people. I will work all ofmy life to emulate with my social work clients theteaching skill of Dr. Thompson.” A graduate studentnotes, “John Thompson has been the single mostimportant educator in my life—by far.I picked up his enthusiasm for learningand it has made me more confidentand a better person.” Another effuses,“the best evidence of the quality of aprofessor’s teaching is found in thelives of his students. The skills andconfidence I developed as a graduatestudent under John’s supervisionresulted in the incredible opportunitiesI have had since graduating. I am nowa faculty member at the University ofLethbridge because of the academicskills I developed under John’sleadership.”Most of his students remember “A LiveSociologist at Work—Writing an Essayin Class.” Using this technique,Dr. Thompson, with the students, writes an essay fromscratch on the blackboard, demonstrating and discussingthe painstaking processes of academic writing. It is apowerful and precarious teaching tool.Professor Thompson has developed, in the words ofSTM President George Smith, “a virtual obsession forthe welfare of students.” He has shown himself to be asuperb teacher and an excellent emissary of hisdiscipline, touching everyone he encounters with hispassion for sociology and his absolute ardour for the craftand art of teaching. President’s Service AwardHowie SalisburyAs the University of Saskatchewan campus hasgrown over the past quarter century, a caring andnurturing hand has ensured that its lifeblood—itsextensive mechanical systems—are designed andoperated in the best possible way forstudents, faculty and staff.Senior Mechanical Engineer HowieSalisbury, who joined the U of S as amechanical engineer in 1978 and waspromoted to the senior post in 1980,has applied what his colleagues calloustanding skill and dedication to hismanagement of this key Universityinfrastructure.In recognition of his 26 years ofexemplary service, Salisbury is beingpresented with the President’s ServiceAward at the 2004 SpringConvocation.Born and raised in Saskatoon,Salisbury graduated from the College of Engineering atthe University of Saskatchewan in 1970. Over the nexteight years he worked for a local mechanical consultingfirm and operated his own consulting engineeringcompany before beginning his career with the University.There are few indoor or outdoor nooks and crannies oncampus that Salisbury hasn’t been in over the years. Hisresponsibilities include providing engineering expertiseto the University’s heating plant, with its boilers forsteam heating and its water chillers for air conditioning.He also oversees the massive network of campus waterlines, sanitary and storm sewers, steam and condensatemains, ventilation, fire suppression systems and naturalgas lines. Salisbury also works with engineering firms andcontractors on the systems for all new buildings oncampus, ensuring they meet campus requirements.Salisbury has seen great change at the University since 1978,particularly the science buildings and theextent of computerized controls in allbuildings. He has played an integral partin upgrading the many systems involvedas new buildings were constructed,including VIDO, Dentistry, a majorEngineering renovation, Place Riel,Geology, the Diefenbaker Centre,Agriculture, the Animal ResourceCentre, the Spinks Addition and theKinesiology Building. He is alsocredited with helping to developenergy conservation measures for themechanical systems that have savedthe University millions of dollars.For Salisbury the excitement is seeingan idea that begins just as a concept,is developed into a design and then becomes an actualoperating structure on campus. Colleagues say thatSalisbury’s enthusiasm shows. He is a respected, positiveco-worker and a great listener who goes well beyond thecall of duty to apply his extensive engineeringknowledge and common sense to develop solutions forpeople across campus. Salisbury is especially thankful forthe tremendous help he has received all along the wayfrom his co-workers in the Facilities ManagementDivision—the designers, planners, back-shoptradespeople and many others.In his spare time Salisbury restores classic cars and buildscustom hotrods, and admits that he’s a “fairly fanatical”U of S Huskies football and hockey fan.University of Saskatchewan92004 Spring Convocation

J. W. George IvanyInternationalization AwardGerri DicksonThe J. W. George Ivany Internationalization Awardwas established by University of SaskatchewanInternational to recognize outstanding contributions by amember of the University’s academic or administrativestaff in furthering the process ofinternationalization at the Universityof Saskatchewan. The University isdelighted to honour, at the Spring2004 Convocation, Professor GerriDickson from the College of Nursing.Dr. Dickson received her B.S.N. andPh.D. from the University ofSaskatchewan and her M.P.H. fromthe University of Hawaii. She came tothe College of Nursing in 1986 with arich history of international and crossculturalwork, including communitydevelopment in the Solomon Islands,coordination of nutrition and maternalchild health projects in Papua, NewGuinea, and health worker educationin Mozambique.During Dr. Dickson’s 18 years at the University ofSaskatchewan, she has worked tirelessly to enhance theinternational and cross-cultural perspectives of facultyand students on campus. Dr. Dickson was instrumentalin the creation of the national Native Access Program toNursing in 1987, a program that has resulted in asignificant increase in the number of Aboriginal studentswho have become nurses. During her Ph.D. research, sheestablished a network of self-help groups for FirstNations women living with abuse.Dr. Dickson has delivered, in the University communityand far beyond, hundreds of lectures and presentationsrelated to health care in third-world countries. Throughthese, she has raised the profile of health issues in thesecountries, as well as health and social issues for FirstNations and Métis people.Dr. Dickson’s international workcontinues to have a substantial impacton health and development. Since1991, she has been involved in aCIDA-funded project that works tostrengthen STD/AIDS control inKenya. She also took a lead role insecuring CIDA funding for the Trainingfor Health Renewal Program, a hugelysuccessful project now in its sixth yearaimed at building capacity inMozambique and engaging theparticipating Canadian institutions inthe use of innovative approaches toeducation and practice of healthworkers. A unique feature of thisproject is the support and involvementof the health sciences programs at theUniversity of Saskatchewan, including participation offaculty and staff members in a collaborative, interdisciplinaryapproach to teaching and learning. Facultyand students from the University of Saskatchewanparticipate in the education programs of the Mozambicanproject site, as well as an inter-disciplinary health sciencescommunity practica in an inner-city neighbourhood.Through Dr. Dickson’s passionate work, she hassucceeded in engaging the University of Saskatchewanin important health-care initiatives at home and aroundthe world—showing us all what the spirit ofinternationalization can accomplish.University of Saskatchewan102004 Spring Convocation

Distinguished Researcher AwardW.A. (Bill) WaiserThe Distinguished Researcher Award recognizes afaculty member’s contribution to scholarship throughthe creation, expansion and critique of knowledge.W. A. (Bill) Waiser, Professor ofHistory in the College of Arts &Science, is the recipient of the Spring2004 award.Professor Waiser earned a Bachelor ofArts, Honours from Trent University in1975. He did his graduate work at theUniversity of Saskatchewan, earning aMaster’s degree (with the support of aQueen’s Fellowship from the CanadaCouncil) in 1976 and his Ph.D. in1983. He joined the Department ofHistory in 1984 and served as headfrom 1995 to 1998.Dr. Waiser is one of Canada’s leadinghistorians, specializing in the westernand northern Prairies. He has writteneight books and is currently working onhis ninth, a history of Saskatchewan commissioned by theU of S and supported by the government of Saskatchewanas well as the federal department of Canadian Heritage forthe provincial centennial. His latest book, All Hell Can’tStop Us: The On-to-Ottawa Trek and Regina Riot, won a2003 Saskatchewan Book Award for non-fiction.An earlier work, Loyal till Death: Indians and the NorthWest Rebellion was co-authored with Professor BlairStonechild, head of Indigenous Studies at the FirstNations University of Canada. The book was praised forits sensitivity in telling the stories of Indians during thisturbulent time. It won a 1997 Saskatchewan Book Awardfor First Peoples Publishing and was a finalist for theGovernor General’s Literary Award for non-fiction.Waiser’s award-winning efforts also include the broadcastmedium. Working with CBC producer Paul Dederick, hehosted and co-produced Looking Back, a series of nearly 50six-minute segments aired on CBC TV’s SaskatchewanNow early evening news from 1998 to 2001.Looking Back was praised for itsapproach of telling historical storiesfrom the perspective of people whowere there. Looking Back was shortlisted for the Pierre Berton Award andreceived an honourable mention at theColumbus International Film andVideo Festival. Material from theprogram has been adapted into the2003 book Looking Back: True Talesfrom Saskatchewan’s Past.Dr. Waiser is adept at satisfying therigorous demands of scholarly work. Hehas published 13 refereed articles andserved as chair of the advisory board ofthe scholarly journal CanadianHistorical Review from 2000 to 2003.He is an active member of local and regional historicalsocieties, and has served on the board of Canada’sNational History Society since 2001.Dr. Waiser brings his enthusiasm for our shared history tothe lecture hall and to his mentorship of numerousgraduate students. He received the College of Arts &Sciences Teaching Excellence Award in 2002 for theseefforts.Dr. Waiser has sought to share the knowledge andunderstanding gained from his extensive scholarship inorder to develop public policy and public awareness of thecontext of current issues, in particular public access tohistorical census materials. Distinction in Public Serviceand Extension AwardBrian RossnagalThis award recognizes a member of faculty who hasextended the University’s expertise to the widercommunity. Brian Rossnagel is the Spring 2004 recipient.Dr. Rossnagel is a Professor in theDepartment of Plant Science, based atthe renowned U of S CropDevelopment Centre (CDC). Hebegan his distinguished career at theUniversity of Manitoba, where heearned a B.Sc. and later, his Ph.D. Hejoined the U of S in 1977.Dr. Rossnagel’s work has centeredmainly on the improvement of feedand food barley and oat for theCanadian Prairies, where he and hiscolleagues developed more than 35varieties. As of the 2003 crop year,fields sown to his cultivars comprisedabout five million acres—more thanhalf of all feed barley and oat acreagein Saskatchewan and Alberta.A much-sought-after speaker, Dr. Rossnagel has sharedhis expertise at more than 300 extension events inCanada, Australia, the United States, Japan and severalEuropean countries. His knowledge transfer activitieshave also included a plethora of industry meetings,telephone and radio interviews, field days and tours. Hehas become the farmer’s first choice for information onbarley, oats, seed production and associated topics.Over the years, he has built an extensive network ofresearch collaborators, including colleagues in privateindustry, the NRC Plant Biotechnology Institute, andAgriculture and Agri-Food Canada research centres inOntario and the Prairie Provinces. His universitycollaborations span the country and reach into theUnited States, Australia and the European Union.Dr. Rossnagel’s scholarly work includesmore than 85 papers in peer reviewedjournals and he has made keycontributions as member and chair ofnumerous University committees.He has been active in manyprofessional and agriculturalorganizations including the CanadianSociety of Agronomy, the RoyalAgricultural Societies of theCommonwealth, Canadian WesternAgribition, the American OatWorkers Conference, the NorthAmerican Barley Workers and theInternational Oat Conference.In 2000, Dr. Rossnagel was named tothe three-year W.J. White Professorship.In 1998 he received the Kirylchuk Award for OutstandingContribution to the Western Canadian Oat Industry fromthe Prairie Oat Growers Association. Governor General’s Academic MedalsThese medals are awarded to the undergraduate student and graduate student with the highest academic standing.Jasrajbir Singh Baath(Silver Medal)Jasrajbir was born in Punjab (India) and moved toCanada in 1991. He graduates with a Bachelor ofScience Three-year Degree with Great Distinction witha major in Biochemistry. Jasrajbir is the recipient of the2004 Spring Convocation Three-year Degree Medal asthe most distinguished graduate in the College ofArts & Science graduating with a Three-year Degree.Jasrajbir has been the recipient of numerous awards andscholarships during his academic career at the Universityof Saskatchewan. These awards include: the Arts &Science ASSET Scholarship, the Dr. Valentine GuyCriswick Scholarship, the SaskPower Scholarship,University of Saskatchewan UndergraduateScholarships, just to name a few. Jasrajbir has also beennamed on the Dean’s Honour List every year, andreceived a NSERC Undergraduate Research Award in2002, 2003 and 2004.He has also been very active as a volunteer at theEmergency Ward at the Royal University Hospital, theSaskatchewan Association for the Rehabilitation of theBrain Injured (SARABI), at the Hantleman BuildingPsychiatric Ward as well as volunteering regularly foron-campus activities such as the Alumni Reunion,Orientation and Shinerama.Jasrajbir has applied to several medical schools. Hislong-term goal in medicine is to become a surgeon but atthis time he is unsure of his field of specialty.University of Saskatchewan13Angela Baerwald(Gold Medal)Angela Baerwald was born in Rosetown,Saskatchewan in 1975. She was raised on a farmnear Elrose, where she attended elementary and highschool. Angela received a B.Sc. (Honours) in Physiologyin 1997 from the University of Saskatchewan, followedby a Doctor of Philosophy in Obstetrics, Gynecology andReproductive Sciences in 2003.Angela’s thesis work characterized ovarian function inwomen during natural menstrual cycles. The mostexciting accomplishment of this study was the discoverythat follicles within the ovary develop at more than onetime during the menstrual cycle, a phenomenon neverbefore documented. The results of this study receivednational and international recognition and haveprovided a new model for studying ovarian function inwomen. It is anticipated that the knowledge of follicularwaves may change the way in which ovarian folliculardevelopment is stimulated in women undergoingtreatment for infertility. Angela’s work also included thestudy of women taking oral contraception. The results ofher work have increased our understanding of thebiologic mechanisms underlying follicular growth inwomen, and provided insight into the mechanismsunderlying emergency contraception.Angela is currently pursuing postdoctoral work in theDivision of Reproductive Medicine at the Ottawa CivicHospital at the University of Ottawa. Outside of heracademic life, she plays the piano and she and herhusband enjoy a variety of outdoor activities includinghiking, swimming, water-skiing, downhill skiing, curling,baseball and time spent at the lake with friends andfamily. Angela aspires to return to the West to raise afamily and establish herself as a bench-to-bedside scientistin the exciting field of reproductive science and medicine.2004 Spring Convocation

History of the University of SaskatchewanThe University of Saskatchewan was established bythe University Act on April 3, 1907, only 18months after Saskatchewan became a province.The people of the province, as well as their government,were instrumental in shaping the new University. Theprovincial government requested all residents who weregraduates of a Canadian or British university to form thefirst Convocation and elect the University’s Senate. TheSenate, in turn, elected five members to the first Boardof Governors, while the province appointed three. In1908, the Board selected Professor Walter CharlesMurray, of Dalhousie University, as the first President.Classes in Arts and Science began in September, 1909,in downtown Saskatoon. Construction of the campusbegan in 1910 and the first buildings were occupied inthe fall of 1912. They included the College Building(Administration Building), Saskatchewan Hall(a student residence), residences for the Dean ofAgriculture and the President, a laboratory forEngineering and a number of farm buildings.From the beginning, the University established anemphasis on research and teaching in a context ofcommunity service, and encouraged co-operation amongdepartments and divisions in tackling commonproblems. The development of rust-resistant strains ofwheat, for example, initiated by the University andfederal and provincial research agencies, has been ofuntold value to the prairie economy.In 1909, the University had 70 students and fiveprofessors, including the President. Today there are over19,000 students studying in 13 colleges and one school.This is the only university in Canada with fivehealth-science colleges and a major teaching hospital onthe same campus. The University offers Spring &Summer Session, evening courses, Independent Studiescourses and distance education as well as on-campusdaytime courses.The University of Saskatchewan overlooks the SouthSaskatchewan River from a 755 hectare site. Thecampus itself is 147 hectares; a research park, theUniversity farm and experimental plots make up theremainder.Most early buildings on campus are Collegiate Gothic instyle and are constructed in a local dolomite, popularlyknown as greystone.
