(about being mixed race)
(and let’s call them K and A)
K: Let’s write something fun. Upbeat. Like being mixed is
weird, but hilarious too.
A: I think it sucks.
K: No way, I think being mixed race is amazing.
A: You just end up with weird insecurity issues, cause you
don’t know enough about either identity.
K: But it’s like a whole club on it’s own!
A: But you’re only ever half, or a part, of something. You’re
never a whole of something.
Leah Newbold is a community organizer,
print artist and Kindergarden teacher
in training. Her work is based around
belonging and exclusion, Diaspora, queer
coming of age, childhood and mixed
race.

K: At least we know we’re complex.
I guess being mixed is super confusing and hard, but I think
the most important thing is taking the time to figure it out
ourselves, amongst ourselves. It’s not about the Canadian
government telling us we’re part of a mixed generation,
or about white people trying to match our skin colour to a
country not their own. It’s about having conversations about
how we feel, what it was like to grow up in a context like this,
how it’s made us confused, but also how it’s made us more
determined, and stronger. While we know without a doubt
that each of our experiences has been totally different, we can
also find ways to make connections that build communities,
that build support.
