OFFICE HOURS:
8AM — 4PM

Students at Riverside are encouraged to embrace integrity.
That is, we want the skills and knowledge developed through getting
better at things [Dedication] used in a way that builds bonds of belonging and connectedness [Compassion]. It is not
right for someone to be able to speak eloquently and yet dominate discussion. Likewise there is no integrity in being
able to spell well and yet choosing not to write.
Students need to not only be the best academically, but also to use their skills with integrity to serve others ‐ to use
their skills in a way which seeks the good of others. Making a useful difference is an important part of our purpose in
life [Service].
Once we have each student serving their peers, school, family and community with their skills and abilities; Riverside
looks for more! We want to see students serve not to self‐aggrandise or out of a sense of philanthropy, but out of a
gratitude for one’s own forgiveness (1 John 4:11). [Right choices]
God’s great love is seen in the death of his Son (1 John 4:9‐10). Our response can only be one of love in return. We seek
to serve others for no higher reason than this. This is our motivation, not the blessings that flow from seeking the good
of others.
Blessings,
Sustainable Interventions—Building Capacity for Students to Learn
In a recent Independent Schools Queensland publication, the statistics and outcomes were highlighted
regarding the program that only 12 schools across Australia are participating in. Our College is one of those
12 schools. Showing significant improvements already, the project addresses three levels of literacy
intervention. Firstly, the focus on establishing the underlying difficulties causing students to not reach the
required year level standard. Secondly, teachers were guided in recognising these underlying difficulties and
in planning appropriate intervention programs that adopted evidence based, high yield strategies. Thirdly,
the layer focuses on whole school approaches with the strategies used in the intervention programs
incorporated into the whole school plan for literacy instruction.
As a consequence of theses practices, a significant gain in reading achievement is evident. At the start of the
program only 38% of the students were reading at or above the expected level for their year level. Recent
evaluation now shows a strong shift with 80% of the students reading at or above the expected level. Within
this group 67% were reading more than one year level above their current year level. 70% of those students
had improved more than two years according to the assessment. With only 10% of students reading more
than one year level below the expected year level.
GREAT RESULTS—Great work by our dedicated staff.
Instant crystals—Instant success
A word from Mrs Blane
Welcome back to Semester Two. A special welcome to
the group of new students who have joined us. As we
look towards the second half of the year it is with
anticipation about the way we continue to do new
and exciting things in the College and the opportunity
we have to build on a great Semester One.
We have started the term with a very special
assembly in which our wonderful Middle College
leaders beautifully and sensitively gave a presentation
on some of our Australian Indigenous history. They
accepted on behalf of the College an Aboriginal and a
Torres Straight Islander flag from Gail Belton, a
representative of the local Indigenous community. A
huge thankyou to Miss Drexler for her organisation of
that assembly and to Leon Nehow for his input and
advice. The welcome to country will now be a regular
part of our assemblies and College events.
As we look to our events for the this term we are
excited with our Year 6/7 students as they count
down to their Wakakirri performance next week – we
know you'll rock guys. We also have lots of
opportunities to get involved in reaching out to our
community through the College garage sale, 40 Hour
Famine and Operation Christmas Child amongst other
things.
A couple of reminders: students need to be diligent
with uniform, having their diary, writing in their
homework, being at school and at classes on time,
and ensuring that they are doing their part to make
the College fantastic. As we move towards the end of
the year too we start to look at plans for next year. If
you know of people that are intending to come here
next year encourage them to get their enrolments
booked in early as we will have waiting lists for some
year levels next year.
Fizzy and fun learning
Maths is something we use in our everyday life but
sometimes we need to see it to understand it better.
Year 8 students this week created their own soft drink
concoctions as they learnt about ratios making all
sorts of weird and wonderful flavours. Who says
learning can't be fun?
Year 8 students have been studying rocks, minerals and
crystals in science with Mrs Lovejoy. The experiment
pictured demonstrates growing instant crystals from a
supersaturated solution.
Wakakirri News
40 students from Year 5 to 7 are working very hard
learning and polishing a dance routine
choreographed by Mrs Desiree McGann. The
students selected the theme of Cyber Bullying and
the story‐dance tells the message of the main
character asking for help by telling an adult (parent
or teacher). The message is delivered to help
empower students to
get the confidence to
turn off the
computer or the
website as soon as
bullying occurs.
♦ The Victim is performed by Jade Crawford‐Cross (Yr 6/7D)
♦ Best Friends are performed by Tristan Miller (Yr 6/7M) & Miranda Fisher (Yr6/7M)
♦ People that start the bullying are performed by Daniel Lloyd (Yr 6/7M) & Katey O’Brien (Yr 6/7M)
♦ Teachers performed by Kaitlin Harrod (Yr 6/7M) & Elisabeth Simpson (Yr 6/7M)
♦ Public Speakers are Sanam Kooner (Yr 6/7M), Isabella Ford (Yr 6/7M) & Jaika Croxon (Yr4/5L)
Our fabulous dance crew is doing a wonderful job and the story is really
looking great, the BACKSTAGE BOY CREW (as they like to be known) are
doing a fantastic job, making sets and training to be able to get the school
set constructed in 2mins, or FACE DEDUCTION POINTS!
Can they do it?! The pressure is on!
The Wakakirri Team will be given the judges score card on their arrival and
the judging begins.
Riverside Team will be judged on the following categories:
♦ Team Work ‐ How well they work together.
♦ Friendliest School – How they treat others.
♦ Behaviour in Public – Noise and manners.
♦ Public Speaking Awards‐ Judges questions
♦ Backstage Award – Noise level and crew work
♦ Dance and Movement – energy and delivery of story
♦ Soundtrack Award‐ does music complement movement.
19 students and 4 staff attended the very first Riverside Snow Trip.
Our first day on the snow was amazing! We were all so excited to be there and finally see
snow. We split up into groups and went to our lessons. Three great young instructors were so
enthusiastic and positive it gave us all extra motivation. We had plenty of falls and plenty of
laughs. Especially when everyone tried to master the J-Bar lift. A very unusual ski lift that no
one had used before. Let’s just say that that over the first 2 days, the snow saw a lot of our
troop, staff and students alike!!
We were all sad to say goodbye to the snow but on our last day it actually
snowed for us. It was lovely and amazingly special to experience.
News from the CHAPLAIN
Hope
To wish for something
with expectation
of its fulfillment
Hope is usually described with
such metaphors as: a ray, a
beam, a glimmer of hope; the
break in the clouds; the light at
the end of the dark tunnel. It is
often discovered in unexpected
places and in unexpected ways.
Life is full of a series of
challenges that we must face.
Although these challenges may
seem impossible at times, they
are probably there for a reason.
One of the most inspiring stories I have come across that really
reveals this Character trait of Hope is the story of Nick Vujicic.
This amazing man was born with no arm and no legs, the son of
a Church Pastor and his wife. Although Nick faced many
challenges that seemed impossible it was his Faith, HOPE and
trust in the God who created him that has allowed Nick to live a
life without limits. He has learnt the value of Hope in his life.
Help your children learn the value of hope in all they do.
No matter what sort of adversity or challenge we face, we can
always believe that, with hope, it can be conquered and, in the
end, we will be stronger for it. Life does go on despite our
circumstances. Hopefully, you will pass on this valuable lesson
to your children.
To find more resources to help you share this lesson with your
children visit www.focusonthefamily.com/parenting/
15 June – 18 June 2011.
We played against teams from Sunshine
Coast, South Coast, Peninsula, Northern,
Metropolitan North, Metropolitan West,
Metropolitan East, Darling Downs, and
Capricornia. Our team was Wide Bay.
Our team won every game so we also
won the Championship.
In one of my games I had a penalty flick
against me which I saved. It was a great
feeling to save the only flick for the whole
week and my coach Dale Dakin was very
happy with me. Leah Ashford, my
manger was also happy with our team
effort.
I was selected as a shadow Goal Keeper
for the Queensland Team but have not
had a call to say I am needed but there is
still a bit of time before the team leaves
for Melbourne.
I would like to thank Riverside for giving
me the chance to go away for this great
trip, and without the Friday Sports
program students like me would not be
able to take part in our favourite sports.”
During the final week of Term Two, ten of our very own string
players participated in the Maryborough Instrumental String
Workshops at the Brolga Theatre. The keen young musicians
had the opportunity to meet other string players and be a part
of a big orchestra whilst developing and learning new things
about playing their instrument. At the end of the workshops,
the players showcased their talents for an audience of parents
and friends. For some of the students, this was their first time
performing on the Brolga stage and there were no nerves in
sight!
Congratulations to Makilee, Beth, Eyerus, Perth, Paris, Ashleigh,
Jess, and Arabelle who participated in the beginner workshop
and day concert and Ashleigh, Yasmin and Elizabeth for their
participation in non‐beginner workshop and leading the
orchestra in the fantastic night concert. Also, a big thank you to
Rebekah Simpson for her assistance at both workshops.
No rest for some of our players who are now practicing very
hard preparing to perform solos, duets and a group item in the
Maryborough Eisteddfod in August.
GARAGE SALE
ON 30 TH JULY
We Need:
Furniture
Electrical appliances
Bikes
Trailers
This year, as there is no mission trip to Fiji, the profits from the Garage Sale will go to
charitable help for starving children in Africa.
The Life Today Program (James and Betty Robson) has helpers in parts of Africa where
mission workers actually go in to feed starving children and families, in places like
Angola, Mozambique, Ethiopia and so on. In this program $1000 can feed 100 to 120
starving children for 3 months.
We hope to maybe be able to raise $2000, and use half of it to provide a water well (bore)
that will provide clean drinking water for a whole village for the rest of their lives. Three
children die every minute across the world, from water born diseases, because of the lack of
clean water facilities.
For larger items, parents can contact Vern Schultz on 0409 309 949 or Kirstene Wallace on 0412 331 512.
This year our students can get even more quality sports gear simply by collecting
vouchers from Coles, Coles Online, BI-LO and Pick'n Pay supermarkets.
Drop the vouchers into the College and at the end of the promotion we can cash
them in for sports gear.
TELL YOUR FRIENDS TO COLLECT FOR US ... GRANDPARENTS, UNCLE, AUNTY, SISTER,
BROTHER, COUSIN, LONG LOST RELATIVES THAT YOU’VE JUST FOUND ... ANYONE!!!!
The more we can collect the more equipment we can purchase for our
students. Collecting vouchers is easy! August 11th thru to October 18th
NATIONAL BANDANNA DAY 2011
Last year we participated in the fundraising and
awareness program called CanTeen. The funds raised
are used to support services and programs for young
people living with cancer that help them on their
journey. In 2011 National Bandanna Day will be on
Friday 28 October.
10 brave Riverside staff take on the winter‐chilled
waters of Hervey Bay to train and gain practical
experience on safety requirements and kayaking
techniques to complete their Queensland Canoeing
certificate.
There will be some great kayaking excursions
coming up this Summer!!
LOST PROPERTY
We are grateful for a volunteer who regularly checks
the lost property area. If student items are clearly
labelled these items are returned back to the owner.
Unnamed and unclaimed items that
remain at the end of each term are
recycled and given to charity.
Please label drink bottles and
uniform items.
