Hempel delivers for a Polish manufacturer
of cargo railcars
Wagony Swidnica is the biggest exporter of cargo railcars in Poland. Hempel Poland has
been cooperating with this company for many years. The manufacturer started using the
water-borne paints from Hempel at the beginning of 2003. The main reason to use our
water-borne paints was the regulation on emissions of solvent-borne paint systems.
Wagony Swidnica originally intended to invest only in their paint shop and furnish it with
burners for emissions of solvent-borne paints. Finally, they made a compromise and fulfi
lled the conditions of the new regulations by using suitable Hempel water-borne paints.
Currently they also use hybrid systems based on WB primer HEMUDUR 18500 and PU
solvent-borne topcoat HEMPATHANE ENAMEL 55100.
Main requirements of Wagony Swidnica include high quality of supplied materials, various
certifi cates (DB, SBB, and similar for British Railways), short production/delivery time,
especially for water-borne paints. These conditions were also required e.g. in terms of the
supply of paints for surface protection of steel structures of wood transport cars. The volume
of the order realized in 2004 was 12,000 litres; the applicator used the hybrid waterborne
HEMUDUR 18500 (130 μm) and HEMUCRYL ENAMEL 58040 (60 μm) for external
surfaces. Another interesting action was the delivery of 9,000 litres of paint for protection
of steel structure of coal transport cars, which took place in the same year. For these
needs, the water-borne system HEMUDUR 18500 (100 μm) and HEMUCRYL ENAMEL HB
58030 (60 μm) was used, the HEMUDUR 48500 (150 μm) was used for the underbody.
Hyva Lift
Waterborne systems in practice
One of Hempel’s most signifi cant customers is the Dutch company Hyva Lift, which has
used about 25 000 litres of our company’s water soluble primer since 2004. Up to now,
this company, which supplies e.g. components for transportation equipment (e.g. skip
loaders), has painted more than 150 000 m 2 with Hempel paints. The surfaces are prepared
to Sa 2.5 and painted with HEMUCRYL PRIMER HI-BUILD 18032 with 40 to 60 μ
thickness; the applicator is the Dutch company Venko based in Hoogeveen.
According to the company management, Hyva Lift is highly satisfi ed with the anti-corrosive
properties of the primer. Even if a product painted with HEMUCRYL PRIMER HI-BUILD
18032 has been stored for several months in outdoor environment and exposed to rain or
snow, the protective properties of the paint comply with Hyva Lift’s high standards.
Another advantage of the paint is its low odour level, which suits the construction crews
in the plant and enables painting and production within one shift without diffi culties or
health risks. With regard to growing demand, the Hyva Lift company plans to start two-shift
operation and to open a similar plant in China, which brings further possibilities of use for
the HEMUCRYL 18032 paint. More information on www.hyva.com.
HEMUCRYL PRIMER HI-BUILD 18032
It is a water-borne acrylic dispersion paint with good anti-corrosion properties. It is especially
suitable for airless spraying. As a primer in water-borne systems for internal and
external steel surfaces in mild to medium corrosive environments. The paint can also be
used as a primer in water-borne paint systems for hot-dip galvanized steel surfaces, aluminium,
or stainless steel in mild corrosive environments.
