"Friends and brethren This is chiefly to satisfy you all whom it may or does or may concern that our
friend William and his wife, went from us into your parts, in the unity of truth and with the consent of
their friends and brethren and did leave a good report behind them in the county where they lived and
we did never hear that they did at any time carry or was otherwise than became truth and the blessed
order of the gospel of Christ Jesus, so we looking upon it as our duty, we could do no less but send this
as our testimony to you in his wife's behalf whom we had dear unity with in the precious truth of our
good and gracious Lord that has been exceeding good to them in bringing them over to you in safety
as we have no more, but our tender love to you all in the Lord Jesus Christ subscribed by us who were
gathered together in the fear of Almighty God at the men's meeting held at William Ganney's house
this 1st day of May 1685."

I Alice Kenably (Kennerly) of Dorchester County Widow being aged but of sound and perfect mind
and memory thanks be to Almighty God for the same and considering the uncertainty of this mortal
life and the certainty of death well known that the Lord can and will at his own good will and pleasure
remove of the face of the Earth - therefore against that time which is only known to God alone I think
meets to settle and dispose of that outward estate which it hath pleased God to make me steward of
and in order thereunto do make this my last will and testament in manner and forms following
Imprimis Before all other things I commit my soul to God that gave it me and my body to the Earth to
be decently buried at the direction of my Executor hereafter named, 2d, It is my will that my negro
woman named Betty and her child be delivered at my decease unto Daniel Cox of this county for to be
by him sold or kept to his own use in consideration whereof it is my will that the said Dan. Cox his
heirs Executors and Administrators pay yearly to the sweck (?) of the people called Quakers belonging
unto their monthly meeting commonly kept in Talbot County during the space of thirty years the sum
of twenty shillings p. annum until the sum of thirty pounds sterling be paid which said sum of money
it is my mind and will that it be for the two of the public Friends that may have aid in the same service
of the truth professed by the people called Quakers through this county that is to pay for their ferriage
or what other charges may by Friends be soon made ------ 3d It is my will that my Executor pay ten
pounds sterling to Richard Jones of Anne Arundel County being for the like heretofore dispersed by
him by the Order of Friends upon the Western Shore the said ten pounds to be by him paid unto the
sweck (?) of Friends on the Western Shore: 4ly I Give unto my son Joseph Kennerly my mare called
Betty and to his daughter Elizabeth I Give the mare filly foal called Tibbey and my side saddle 5ly I
give and bequeath to the three children of the said Joseph Kennerly namely Joseph Elizabeth and Mary
Kennerly one cow and calf to each of them to be delivered by my Executor as each of the said children
come the age of nine years apiece: 6ly I give and bequeath unto my son Joshua the land and plantation
whereon I now dwell situated lieing and being on Fishing Creek in Little Choptank River together with
all the woods underwoods houses and edifices buildings and improvements whatsoever thereunto
belonging to have and to hold to him and his heirs and assignees forever: 7ly I give unto William
Kennerly son of Joshua Kennerly my featherbed and furniture--- 8ly I give all the rest and residue of
my said estate after my just debts are paid to my son Joshua Kennerly In witness whereof and that I do
nominate constitute ordain and appoint the said Joshua Executor of this my said last will and
testament I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 24th day of the 8th month called October 1702-------

Will of Joshua Kennerly
I Joshua Kennerly of Dorchester County in the Province of Maryland, Planter, being of good health and
perfect Memory and knowing the uncertainty of this transitory life do make and ordain this my Last
Will and Testament in manner and form following - revoking and making null and void all other Will
or Wills, testament and testaments heretofore by me made and this only to be my last Will and
Testament.
FIRST: I commit my spirit into the hands of the Father of light as into the hand offaithful creator and
my body to be decently buried according to the discretion of my executors hereafter mentioned.
And as for the temporal Estate which it hath pleased the Lord to bestow upon me, my just debts and
funeral expenses first being paid and .
ITEM: I give and bequeath in manner and from following, Viz: First that my Stills & Clock and Smiths
materials as bellows anvill and vices mil or mills be appraised as assess to my estate and
the enclosed accompts in this my Will shall come in _foridge to my estate in respect of an equal
division among my three children William Kennerly, Hester Edmondson and Sarah Kennerly.
ITEM: I give and bequeath my son William Kennerly all the tract of land called Coverton wherein I
now live upon condition as followeth. Viz: that my large outer room called the Hall be and remain for
a meeting House for my friends called Quakers and that my inward room called the parlor at the
southern most end of my dwelling House with the closets belonging to it i give to my daughter Sarah
Kennerly to have the liberty of living in the said room so long as my siad daughter shall remain
unmarried and for her to have liberty for her part of the stock on my dwelling Plantation and not to be
hindered by my son William Kennerly or his heirs during the time that my aforesaid daughter remains

unmarried.
ITEM: If my son William Kennerly complies with the above requests then my will is that he should
enjoy the aforesaid tract of land during his life and to the heirs ofhis body lawfully begotten forever,
but not complying with the aforesaid articles my will is that the aforesaid lands shall be lawfully given
into the possession of my daughter Sarah Kennerly and the heirs of her body lawfully begotten forever,
and for the want of such heirs to my next enforcing heir.
ITEM: I give and bequeath unto my daughter Sarah Kennerly all that tract or parcel of land which was
bought of William Dorsry containing seventeen acres being called The End of Contraverseyand
likewise a parcel of land belonging to the same tract bought of John Dorsey containing eighty three
acres according to conveyance I give and bequeath unto my daughter Sarah Kennerly and to the heirs
of her body lawfully begotten forever and for lack of such heirs unto my grandson Joshua Kennerly
and the heirs of his body lawfully begotten forever and the aforesaid land shall come into her
possession or my son William Kennerly remove all of the said plantation or takes possession of this my
dwelling plantation and not afore likewise I give my aforesaid daughter the negroes Sarah which is left
to her by Father Everdons Will.
ITEM: I give and bequeath unto my son Joshua Kennerly both the two tracts of land which I bought of
John Loockerman lying and of Fishing Creek and know or knowing by Kennerlys Addition as will
appear by certificate to him and the heirs ofhis body lawfully begotton forever for lack of such heirs To
my grandson William Edmondson likewise I give unto my son Joshua Kennerly my mark which I
bought of Edward Harden it being two crops and two slits cover Betted on the rights ear as will appear
by Edward Hardens bill of sale on Records in full of his Portion.
ITEM: I give and bequeath unto my daughter Martha now called Right one shilling Sterling in full of
her portion because she married without my consent.
ITEM: My will is that the two accompts which I have taken of the goods delivered to William Kennerly
and to Solomon Edmondson which I inclose in this my will in order that the aforesaid accompts my be
equalized and that my daughter Sarah Kennerly shall have to the same vallor and as near to that same
proportion or to her liking.
ITEM: I give and bequeath unto my grandson Joshua Edmondson and to his heirs my lot and house at
Vienna that lot being No 22 which I bought from William Bounds and John Hampton, I give the same
to my grandson Joshua Edmondson and to his heirs forever and for lack of such heirs unto my
granddaughter Mary Edmondson and to her heirs forever.
Also my will is that my moveable estate be equally divided amongst my three children namely
William, Ester and Sarah Kennerly and if any difference should arise amongst my aforesaid children,
my will is that they shall stand and abide the judgement of my four friends hereafter appointed and
that It shall be lawful for their determination for to be definitive in all such cases that child or children-
That shall not stand to The Adward of my four friends shall have no benifits of my moveable estate
And likewise that child or children that will not comply with this article, that either his or her
proportion shall be given or equally divided between him or her that will comply with The Adward of
my four friends - NAMEL Y - Peter Sharp, William Edmondson, Thomas Brannock, Daniel Cox.
Lastly I appoint my son William Kennerly and Solomon Edmondson my whole and sole Executors of
this my Last Will and Testament requesting them for to see it performed and in confirmation of this my
will I have hereunto set my hand and Seal this 12 day of the seventh month called September in the
year one thousand seven hundred thirty one.

He was born Abt. 1702, and died 1747 in Dorchester CO., MD.
Notes for Martha Kennerly:
According to Third Haven Quaker Meeting, Talbot County, Maryland, notes:
"28-29 da IX mo 1732 Martha Kennerly, having been married by a priest to a man not of our religious
party and having outed contrary to Truth in Divers respect [illegible] and her transgressions laid
before her, deliberately [illegible] she may not [illegible], after deliberated consideration, no Friend
having anything upon their mind and [illegible] and all appearing clear of her, the meeting gave forth
a public witnessing in writing and condemn and disown the sid Martha to be of our religious party."
She apparently waited till her father's death to marry Edward (and cause the ensuing ruckus), since
two days after the above entry, the deaths of Joshua and his brother Joseph are discussed in the
meeting.

In the Name of God, Amen. I, Edward Wright, of Dorchester County, in the Province of Maryland,
being sick and weak in Body, but of Perfect mind and memory, thanks be to God therefor,and calling
unto mind that it is appointed for all men to die, do make and ordain this my last Will and Testament
in manner and form following, Vizt., first I give and Bequeath unto my well beloved Son, Joshua
Wright, a Tract of Land called Chapman's Fellowship lying and being in Baltimore County and to his
heirs or assigns, secondly I give and bequeath unto my well beloved wife Martha all my lands lying
and being in Dorchester County during her Life and after her Decease I give and bequeath the said
Land unto my Five Sons, Vizt. William, Edward, Levin, Jacob, Lemuel to them and their heirs of their
Body Lawfully begotten, Thirdly I give unto my three Daughters after their Mothers decease, one

Rockingham being feable and weak in body but in perfect mind and memory, Thanks be to almighty
God for his great mercies.... calling to mind the mortality of my mind and knowing ... that it is
appointed for all men once to see , do make and ordain this
my last will and testament that is today principally and first of all I give and recommend my soul into
the hand of almighty God that gave it and my body I recommend to the earth to be buried in decent
christain burial at the discretion of my executors but at the general resurrection, I shall receive the

eight parts. First to my wife Hester Wright one eight part, to my son Josiah the next eight parts, to my
daughter Hester one eights part, to my son Jacob one eights part, to my daughter Martha one eights
part, to my son William one eights part., to my daughter Elizabeth one eight parts, to my daughter
Mary one eight parts.
I also constitute my dearly beloved Hester Wright and my son Josiah Wright my whole and sole
executor and executive of my whole estate and I hereby utterly disallow, revoke, and dis annul all and
every other former testaments, wills, legacies,bequests and executors by me in any wise before named

Thomas BENTON of Rockingham and Stokes Counties Prays for Divorce From
Polley (WRIGHT) BENTON.

Petition of Thomas BENTON of Rockingham County states that when he was
about eight years of age, his parents departed this life leaving your
petitioner and three sisters in a helpless and forlorn situation.
Eventually your petitioner was put to live with a certain Willis PRUITT .
in Stokes County, whose severe treatment while young caused your
petitioner to feel constrained and repugnant to comply to the mandates
of said Willis. When your petitioner became seventeen years of age, the
said Willis through insinuations and threats compelled your petitioner
to intermarry with a certain Polley WRIGHT, a step-daughter of the said
Willis, "who then lived in this family and who was only about fourteen
years of age. Your petitioner at the time of his intermarriage was
entirely ignorant of the views and nefarious schemes of the said Willis
PRUITT. Your honorable body will better conceive than I can express the
surprise and indignation I felt when I came to learn that the whole trick
had been planned and played off. Your said petitioner for the sole
purpose of gitting the Estate of the said Polley (which was considerable)
into the hands of the said Willis, which at length he has done." The said
Polley from the first night of their marriage absolutely refused to bed
and cohabit with your said petitioner, nor have they lived together,
nor is there any prospect that they ever will. It has been upwards of
four years since the said marriage took place in which said time the said
Polley has been delivered of a child which your said petitioner entirely
disowns." The said Polley "hath entirely devoted herself to every evil
and shameful practice of a common prostitute. Your petitioner deems it
unnecessary to go any further into a detail of a subject as disagreeable
to himself as it must be unpleasant for you." Prays for a law to divorce
him from the said Polley.
Ninety Four citizens of the counties of Rockingham and Stokes certify
that the facts set forth in the foregoing petition are believed to be
true and that the said Thomas BENTON has always supported a good character
and that he is justly entitled to the clemency of the Legislature.

Few areas in the United States symbolize the American pioneer spirit more than Cumberland Gap.
Crossing the gap meant encountering America's first western frontier and symbolically severing
European ties. Between 1760 and 1850 more than 300,000 people walked, rode, or were carried over the
Appalachian Mountains through Cumberland Gap.
Formed by a stream and enlarged by wind and weather, the Cumberland Gap, named by surveyor
Thomas Walker for his English patron, the Duke of Cumberland, son of George II of England, is fifteen
hundred feet above sea level. Various types of sediments including shells, shale, limestone, and gravel
surround the area and attest to the great earth disturbances that formed the gap.

Settlers followed a trail over the gap initially used by Native Americans, who had enlarged it from an
animal trace. They were entering a prized hunting ground, coveted by the Shawnees to the north and
Cherokees to the south. The French and Indian War, followed by the American Revolution, briefly
halted white settlement. But with the restoration of peace, the flow of hunters, settlers, and land
speculators through Cumberland Gap was resumed. Perhaps the most famous traveler was Daniel
Boone, who agreed to take settlers north into Kentucky after first making several hunting trips through
the gap.
By 1800 the states of Kentucky, Tennessee, and Virginia claimed the area through the Cumberland
Gap. After 1840 a weekly stage carried freight, mail, and passengers and gave the area a prosperous
commercial appearance. During the Civil War, the gap changed hands four times as the North and
South fought for control of this strategic gateway. Initially considered part of Kentucky, and therefore
under Union control, the first troops to occupy the Cumberland Gap were Confederate forces under
the command of Brigadier General Felix K. Zollicoffer. Union commander Brigadier General George
W. Morgan took the "American Gibraltar" on June 18, 1862. Morgan did not remain at the gap,
however, and Confederates reoccupied the area immediately. After a year of inactivity, Union forces
reappeared, and Major General Ambrose E. Burnside demanded and received unconditional
surrender. The gap was not seriously threatened again during the remainder of the war.
In 1841, Fate and Nannie Taylor came through the Gap with 5 of their children. As one descendent put
it "Nannie had one in her arms and one in her belly." One son died on the way and the youngest
Mariah Jane died after they reached Tennessee but a new daughter was born 2 years later and named
for the dead infant. Martha Jane Taylor who became my great grandmother.

Hillsboro, TN Sept 17 1864 and was paroled at Camp Chase, Ohio, Feb 13 1865 being rec'd at
Boulwares & Cox Warf, James River, VA, Feb 20 1865. He surrendered, May 1, 1865 at Sand Mountain,
AL and subscribed to oath of allegiance at Nashville, TN, May 16 1865. signed Robert C Davis,
Adjutant General, May 15, 1923" Pension Application
He received a Civil War Veterans Pension. His grandson, Watt and grandaughter Polly remember that
when they were little, he would line all of the grandchildren up and give each of them a quarter every
month when he received his pension check. Watt II, says at one time he had $5 from the money that
Granpa Watt gave him. Considering this was just before the Depression, that was a lot of money.
Watt and his brother Sam were at Camp Chase at the same time. It is unknown if they knew each
other were there.
