2 ANNUAL REPORT
Get REAL! Mentoring
This 30-week in-school mentoring program was
designed for girls who have been identified as atrisk
of dropping out of middle school. Participation
helps them make healthy choices regarding selfesteem,
relationships, abstinence and conflict
resolution, using a curriculum that promotes
honesty, responsibility and self-confidence. 387
girls participated in 2010 at 16 sites in Duval County.
We’re Making a Difference
While the majority of girls participate as members
of troops, a growing number join and are served
through program opportunities and pathways
designed to meet their specific needs. 2,695
girls participated through innovative program
opportunities, such as:
Head Start Daisy Girl Scouts
Girls ages 4-5 participate in activities encouraging
pre-literacy skill development. Through active
listening, storytelling, singing, dramatic play, dancing
and drawing, girls learn to express themselves,
understand others, and look forward to learning to
read.
Community Development
Reaching out to girls in low-income housing sites
in need of safe, positive, personal development
opportunities for youth, troop meetings take
place within the housing communities they serve,
facilitated by specially trained adults. In 2010, we
served 706 girls in 36 sites in Duval and Alachua
Counties.
Reach Out With Reading
Reach out with reading day camps helped 135
children aged 5-12 living in low-income areas
practice reading skills and develop a positive
attitude towards reading, while program aides ages
14-17 practiced leadership skills and deepened their
commitment to community service.
Passages
In this 3-5 day orientation for girls entering junior
high or middle school, girls gain confidence in
themselves and prepare for the changes that
will take place socially, developmentally and
educationally.
Girl Scouts Share Their Love of Reading
at Summer Reading Workshops
“They see themselves as leaders, but they are really
agents of change,” says Mary Pat Callihan, Media
Specialist for Orange Park Elementary. “Parents come
in and tell me ‘Wow, my child is a reader now because
of this.’”
Since 2007, members of Girl Scout troop 308 have
been hosting summer reading programs for students
at Orange Park Elementary. In Summer 2010, troop
members Carolyn Mercer, Emily Tate and Hailey
Warber expanded the program as they each worked
toward earning their Girl Scout Gold Award. The Gold
Award, the highest honor a Girl Scout can achieve,
requires girls to take action in their communities while
leading others in their vision and making plans for their
projects’ sustainability.
“We’d like to see the entire Clay County school system
have a summer reading program,” says Carolyn Mercer,
“I’d even like to see it spread to other counties in the
State of Florida.”
“What started out as these girls
doing a program here by themselves
has evolved into the girls training
adults how to run this program at
other schools,” says Callihan, who
took on the role of the girls’ Gold
Award Project Advisor. Media Specialists
from Clay Hill and Rideout Elementary
Schools adopted the program
based on the information
they received at the girls’
workshop last April. “I’m still hearing raves about it. [My
colleagues] say its one of the best workshops they’ve
been to,” Callihan says, “Probably because it wasn’t just
sit up and lecture, it was get up and do, and learn a truly
wonderful thing.”
This year, the girls also expanded their program to
Montclair and Fleming Island Elementary Schools, and
trained two Girl Scout troops how to work with the
Media Specialists to run these programs in the future.
More than 150 students participated in the program.
“I’m excited because they’ve done something that
will have a long term impact,” says Ginger Butler, a
volunteer mentor from GSGC’s Gold Award Advisory
Committee. “These girls were not just interested in this
generation of school children, they wanted to impact
the future,” said Butler.
“Ms. Ginger was so good about making sure we didn’t
get our heads too far into the clouds. She kept us
thinking realistic,” says Mercer, “And, Ms. Mary Pat, we
love her way too much! She was our connection to
the School Board, but was also an endless amount of
encouragement. She’s creative and supportive and
wasn’t afraid to let us take charge.”
Callihan says she learned how to let the girls lead from
their Girl Scout Troop Leaders, Sheri Mercer and Patrica
Warber. “Its not my agenda, its theirs. I speak to them
as an equal, let them make decisions and be willing to
let them work those decisions through,” says Callihan,
“Not to take over but to let them do and fail and
evaluate and change and grow.”
The Girl Scout Cookie Sale Program
7,349 girls and approximately 1,500 adults in our council
voluntarily participated in the annual Girl Scout Cookie
Sale Program in 2010. The money they earned helped fund
their troop’s activities for the year, while the product sales
activity itself helped them develop five essential skills:
• Goal setting
• Decision making
• Money management
• People skills
• Business ethics
Proceeds from the sale of Girl Scout Cookies also helped
our council:

• Recruit and train volunteer adults to
work with girls.
