FA Football Seeks Repeat Success In 2012
By JOHN GOKEY
MALONE – The Franklin Academy varsity football
team enters the 2012 fall season as the defending Section
10, Class A champions. Unfortunately for the
Malone squad, they won’t get a chance to defend that
title.
The Malone pigskin program will now look to become
the Section 10 champion, and state representative,
in Class B.
The varsity Huskies finished the 2011 campaign
with a 9-2 mark, falling to Section 7’s Saranac Central
during the regular season, then dropping a state
playoff game to Burnt Hills/Ballston Lake, which left
a sour taste in the collective mouths of the returning
Green & White players.
The road to the sectional crown and, hopefully for
Malone, state play, begins with the reigning Section
10 offensive Most Valuable Player in quarterback
Mitchell Gallagher, who is a year older and stronger.
The Malone QB led the Northern Football Conference
(the combined Section 7 & 10 football league) in rushing
yards while leading the Huskies in rushing, passing,
and defensively in tackles.
With the demise of the NFC League, all Section 10
teams will return to the Northern Athletic Conference,
where traditional rivals Massena, Ogdensburg, Potsdam,
Canton, Gouverneur, St. Lawrence Central, and
Tupper Lake will all vie for the conference crown.
The huge offensive numbers that Gallagher posted
a year ago may not come quite as easily this season, as
the Malone team enters the 2012 fall campaign with
an entirely new front – both offensively and defensively,
as the Huskies graduated their entire starting lines.
Gone are starters Austin Kerr, Mike Sharrow, Korey
Prue, Doug Marshall, Curtis Beaudry, Brandon Picaro,
and Matt “Big White” Cooley.
The Huskies do return plenty of players with varsity
game experience, along with the front line from the
undefeated junior varsity team and a number of seniors
that saw plenty of playing time in 2011. All of the
current varsity members have taken part in the Malone
JV team’s current 37-game winning streak.
“Our front line will be the key for us offensively and
defensively,” stated Malone Head Coach Greg Marshall.
“It’s a new group of players and they will need to
learn how to play as a unit very quickly.”
Stepping in potential starting roles on the offensive
line will be senior Cody Prue, who at 250 lbs., will snap
the ball to the quarterback, and on special teams,
while the starting guards should be seniors Duncan
Marshall and Kelsey Head. Both linemen have the size
to open holes and maintain a pocket for the quarterback.
Slated for the offensive tackle spots are senior Matt
Ellison and junior Tehatakenta Boots (a.k.a. T-Boots),
with senior Charles Debyah and juniors Stephen Watkins,
Ben Otis, Tanner Godin and Joe Gokey set to step
in when called upon.
Although Gallagher received most of the headlines
a year ago, he is not the only offensive weapon for
Malone. Speedy wideouts Harvey Smith and John Picaro
(FA’s back-up QB along with former JV signal-caller
Jacob Henning) combine with Nate Monette and JP
King to give the QB plenty of throwing options. Senior
Cody Collins has the capability to step into a wideout
spot while juniors Jordan Yando, Dustin Wert, and
Abe Gravell are working hard to break into the starting
lineup.
On the ground, Tyrek Sneed, Cameron Guerin and
Shawn Mulverhill will take plenty of handoffs as JV
standout Jake Perry is battling to earn a starting job.
Picaro and Smith could also line up in the backfield as
could junior Devin Noreault.
On the defensive side of the ball, Head, Ellison and
Boots make up three-quarters of the front line, with
hard-hitting Robert Shaw, big Stephen Watkins and
ends Danny Sanchez and Loghan Harris, who both are
well over six feet in height, are stepping into the mix
for a starting role.
Gallagher and Perry are slated for the outside linebacker
spots with Guerin, Mulverhill and Cody Boyea,
who had several key tackles a year ago, rotating on
the inside. Also in the mix for a starting spot is junior
Tucker Bartenslager, who is over six feet tall and better
than 200 pounds with a jolting finish to his tackles.
The defensive backfield for Malone should have
Monette, King and Picaro rotating on the corners with
the speedy Smith at safety. All can rotate positions
and cover just as much ground as any receiver in the
league.
The Huskies are scheduled to open up the 2012 season
on the road, traveling to Canton for the Northern
Athletic Conference opener at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday,
then will have their home opener in week 2, as Malone
will entertain the St. Lawrence Central Larries in a
1:30 p.m. kick-off.
OFA Soccer Teams Look To Contend In Central
By DAVE SHEA
OGDENSBURG - Leadership by committee
is a concept which OFA Girls Soccer
Coach Lauren Morley feels her team
will use to craft a successful season which
opens tonight under the lights of the Alton
W. Elliott Complex.
OFA will host Heuvelton, Lisbon and
Norwood-Norfolk in its annual Blue Devil
Invitational which serve as the kickoff for
Blue Devil athletics in the 2012 school year.
Next weekend, Sept. 7-8, the reigning NAC
Central Champion Blue Devil Boys Soccer
team will open its season by hosting the
Gerald Cring Memorial Tournament.
GIRLS SOCCER OPENING
“I think our major strength will be leadership
in all areas of the field and I think
that with good communication we will
have an excellent mix,” said coach Morley
who is currently shaping her team from
a cast which includes 12 seniors, four juniors,
three sophomores and two freshmen.
“We have excellent athletes, players
with great speed, we have people who can
contribute with all out hustle, we have
proven veterans and we have a nice corps
of young people who I am really excited to
watch develop.”
The Devils will compete in a restructured
NAC Central Division which includes
traditional rivals Malone, Massena,
Canton, Potsdam, Gouverneur and first
year entry in Salmon River which in past
years has consistently competed for Section
10 Class B honors out of the East Division.
Returnees from last year feature returning
regulars in 21-point scorer Shannon
Tooley(Sr. Forward), Stacy Barr (Sr.
Sweeper), Mary Burns (Sr. Forward/Halfback),
Zendell Cordwell (Sr. Defense), Nicole
Duprey (Sr. Forward/Halfback), Jocelyn
Fifield (Sr. Halfback), Nikki Holmes (Sr.
Halfback), Kaitlin Piercey (Sr. Defender),
Kaitlin Sheppard (Sr. Forward), Taylor
Smithers (Sr. Defender) and Brooke Badlam
(Jr. Defender).
Defender Courtney Sherwin (Soph)
and forward/halfback Alicia Shaver
(Soph) both played well after moving up
to the varsity for the later stages of the regular
season and the sectional tournament
and another sophomore Kristen Snyder
will assume the number goaltender position
backed by a first year senior in Erica
Chase who showed excellent toughness
as a lacrosse netminder.
Juniors moving from the JV level are:
Nicole Hammond (Halfback) and Kayla
Tolman (Defender) and Mackenzie Bresett
(Defender). Senior Brittany O’Grady
is another first-year defender.
Two freshmen halfbacks in Natalie Giglio
and Danielle Guimond are looking to
follow up a strong summer playing for the
NNY Youth Soccer League Champion FC
Freeze team.
OFA BOYS DEFEND TITLE
Six returning starters from an NAC Central
Division Championship team and Section
10 Class B semi-finalist (lost to Potsdam
in overtime) will anchor the OFA Boys
Soccer team which looks to receive consistent
contributions from all four classes
over the course of the fall campaign.
“We have a solid core returning. How we
fare will depend on whether or not we can
mesh the new players with the returning
guys,” said OFA Coach Matt Morley who is
currently working with a 24-person squad.
“We definitely have good talent, several
players who can play more than one position
and a lot of combinations to look at.”
Put your aches and pains on our shoulders. Our orthopedic
specialists and physical therapists bring dedication and
expertise in treating your acute injuries such as fractures,
ligament sprains, and tendon tears. Our team will
recommend the most effective and least invasive
treatment methods to get you back in the game. Whether
you’re an athlete with a severe injury, or sidelined due to
pain, you can depend on our orthopedic team to work
toward one goal: returning you to an active lifestyle.
Visit us at cphospital.org
Anchoring those combinations will
be three senior captains in defender Alec
Manke, midfielder Pat Cosmo and forward
Gian Rufa who emerged as the team’s leading
scorer last season. Sophomores in defender
David Prudhomme and midfielders
Matt Piercey and Nate Peo all enjoyed
stellar rookie seasons and appear wellequipped
to become pace-setters.
Seniors looking to expand their contributions
from last year are: Justin Feldt (Midfield/Forward),
Jordan Fifield (Midfield/
Defense) Andrew Guimond (Midfield/
Forward), Garrett Calton (Defender), Andrew
Colburn (Defense/Midfield), Matt
Snodgrass (Midfield) and Chris Axtell (Midfield/Defense)
and senior Brandon Mullin
and junior Rudy Binion look to contribute
as first-year varsity performers. The junior
class affords Coach Morley with similar
versatility with Martin Arquitt (Midfield),
Connor Hannan (Midfield/Forward), Pat
LaComb (Defense), Mike Mallott (Midfield/
Defense), Aaron Peo (Defense), Jed McRoberts
(Midfield/Defense) and Donovan
Smith (Midfield/Defense).
The team’s lone sophomore will fill a vital
position as Jacob Sias has smoothly taken
over the starting goaltender’s position.
Peyton Lalone, coming off a strong summer,
has earned a place in the front line
corps as a freshman.
NAC Realigns Into Four Divisions For 2012
By DAVE SHEA
For the second time in two years, the Northern Athletic Conference will institute
a realigment for the sports that are fielded by the great majority of its
members: boys and girls soccer and basketball, baseball and softball.
This time Section 10 Athletic Coordinator Carl Normandin believes that the
NAC has it right.
In the format used for the 2011-2012 school year, the NAC went from three
divisions (Central, West, East) to a four-division look (Central, East, West,
North).
In the four division setup, Edwards-Knox moved from the West Division into
the East and the North was formed by moving Canton and Norwood-Norfolk
from the Central and Salmon River, St. Lawrence Central and Brushton-Moira
from the East.
For the 2012-13 school year, the NAC will return to three divisions with the
Central, West and East.
Edwards-Knox will restore the traditional eight-team Class D NAC West, and
Canton returns to the Central, which will now house all of the Class A-B schools
with the addition of Salmon River, which will play in the Central for the first
time. “We are really glad to be back in the Central,” said Canton Athletic Director
Bill Porter. “We never wanted to move.”
Norwood-Norfolk will compete in the new-look NAC East in a division that
now features Class C schools in Norwood-Norfolk, Brushton-Moira, Tupper
Lake and St. Lawrence Central and Class D schools in Madrid-Waddington,
Chateaugay, Parishville-Hopkinton, Colton-Pierrepont and St. Regis Falls.
In girls soccer, boys and girls basketball and softball, the nine East schools
will be subdivided for scheduling purposes into the North with Brushton-
Moira, Norwood-Norfolk, SLC, Madrid-Waddington and Tupper Lake and the
East with Chateaugay, Colton-Pierrepont, Parishville-Hopkinton and St. Regis
Falls.
The East will feature eight teams in baseball because Colton-Pierrepont
plays lacrosse in the spring and eight teams in boys soccer because Tupper
Lake plays football in the fall.
“I really believe that this year’s alignment will work long-term as long as
we don’t lose programs because of budgeting problems. It utilizes geography,
school size and programs offered by schools,” Normandin said.
“We now have all the Class A and B schools together in the Central, the East
has a mix of Class C and D schools and the Class D West is back together,” Normandin
added. “Salmon River disagreed with the move to the Central and we
understand their position, but it is time for the largest schools of the section to
be in one division.”
Edwards-Knox Athletic Director Lori Brewer said that the school, the coaches
and communities were all “delighted” to have the Cougars returning to the
West.
“Playing in the East was excellent competition but we have great rivalries in
the West,” she said. “Our kids missed playing against the kids they have played
against all their lives. They especially missed playing against Hermon-DeKalb
in league play because the schools are so close.”
The following alignments will be used based on the number of schools participating
in soccer, basketball, baseball and softball:
GIRLS SOCCER, B/G BASKETBALL, SOFTBALL
West Division: Clifton-Fine, Edwards-Knox, Hammond, Harrisville, Hermon-DeKalb,
Heuvelton, Lisbon, Morristown.
Central Division: Canton, Gouverneur, Malone, Massena, Ogdensburg,
Potsdam, Salmon River.
North Division: Brushton-Moira, Norwood-Norfolk, St. Lawrence Central,
Madrid-Waddington, Tupper Lake.
East Division: Chateaugay, Colton-Pierrepont, Parishville-Hopkinton, St.
Regis Falls.
BASEBALL
West Division: Clifton-Fine, Edwards-Knox, Hammond, Harrisville, Hermon-DeKalb,
Heuvelton, Lisbon, Morristown.
Central Division: Canton, Gouverneur, Malone, Massena, Ogdensburg,
Potsdam, Salmon River.
East Division: Brushton-Moira, Norwood-Norfolk, St. Lawrence Central,
Madrid-Waddington, Tupper Lake, Chateaugay, Parishville-Hopkinton and
St. Regis Falls.
BOYS SOCCER
West Division: Clifton-Fine, Edwards-Knox, Hammond, Harrisville, Hermon-DeKalb,
Heuvelton, Lisbon, Morristown.
Veteran Line Anchors Massena Football Hopes
By ALAIN St. PIERRE
MASSENA - The more things have
changed, the less Massena Central football
coach Anthony Diagostino hopes
they remain the same heading into the
2012 NAC season.
“Every year is different in high school
football. It’s just the nature of the sport.
You always have seniors who graduate
and leave the program and you always
have younger kids maturing and looking
to make the step up to varsity,” noted
Diagostino, who begins his fifth year at
the Raider football helm with a roster
2012 Sandstoners Poised
For NAC Gridiron Success
By JOHN TURCOTTE
POTSDAM – After a year’s absence, Friday night lights return to the Potsdam campus
for the 2012 season.
An electric usage problem forced the Sandstoner football team to play home games
on Saturday afternoons last fall, but all systems are go this year for night football for a
Potsdam team that could very well light it up offensively for 10th-year head coach Jim
Kirka.
“We’re usually a team that relies on one main running back, but we have a lot of guys
who can carry the ball this year,” Kirka said. “Will Coleman is healthy again, good to
go and will start at quarterback. Last year’s other quarterback, Shawn Clark, is looking
very good at wide receiver. And our offensive line could be as good as we’ve had here.
They’re big, strong and hungry.”
Potsdam’s 2011 season ended in a Class A championship game loss at Malone as the
Sandstoners finished 6-4 overall on the season. Kirka looks forward to a possible return
to state tournament play as in 2009 and 2010.
“I’m excited about this team. A lot of guys worked hard in the weight room this summer,”
Kirka said. “I’m usually not optimistic, but I am this year. We have more team
speed than we’ve ever had. But we have to stay healthy and live up to our potential.”
Coleman, a junior, suffered a severe leg injury late last football season, and the
brother of several outstanding former Sandstoner athletes went on to miss both the
basketball and baseball seasons. But he’s now been cleared to compete and will be a
key component of the always-strong Potsdam running game, which also features senior
veteran tailbacks Aaron Lewis, Stephen Lewis and Garrett Kilgore. It also includes
running back and return threat Oden Robertson, who started at St. Lawrence Central
last season as a sophomore but has transferred to Potsdam. Andrew Ace and Ryan Mc-
Faddin, up from the JV, give the Sandstoners two strong fullbacks.
Clark, a 6-foot-7 junior, provides a nice target for Coleman at wide receiver, while at
tight end, All-NAC player Josh Adams will be replaced by senior veteran Jacob Woods
and Dylan Greer, up from the JV.
David Adams, a transfer from Virginia, is very versatile and will see time at backup
quarterback, receiver and on defense.
Potsdam’s outstanding veteran offensive line includes seniors Kyle Martin, Aaron
Deon and Preston Mason along with junior Matt Cincinnati. Seniors Ian Drummatter
and Aaron Chandler are also top linemen and several Potsdam linemen will see action
on both sides of the ball.
Other returning players include seniors Kyle Weems (WR/DB), Joe Boysk (DL) and
Corey Brown (DB) along with juniors Jacob Bryant (WR) and Dan Devine (WR).
Potsdam, with a 33-man roster, has merger agreements with both Norwood-Norfolk
and Madrid-Waddington and will thus compete again in Class A for the postseason.
NEW HOURS
that features only nine players from
last year’s team which won three of four
games over the final four weeks to close
at 4-5.
“This is a totally different team. We
don’t focus too much on last year but we
use that 4-5 record to put a little fire underneath
us,” he added. “Our numbers
are up a bit and we have a good group
of kids that work hard in practice. We’re
excited about the season. We’ll see what
happens.”
The Raiders will be looking to build a
contender for NAC and Section 10 Class
A honors around a solid nucleus of offensive
lineman led by third-year senior
tackle Jordan Hart. Also returning on the
line are seniors Sam Sprague and Kioweren
Rourke along with junior Josh Blair
and senior tight end Justin Bestor. Firstyear
players looking to earn game time
on the line include seniors Ben Light
and Nick White along with juniors Sam
Gerbert, Cody Hooper, Montana Jacobs,
Scott Laneuville and Alex Romeo. Junior
Ross Davis is second on the Raider depth
chart at tight end.
“At this point, our offensive line is definitely
our strength,” said Diagostino.
Expected to anchor the Raider running
game is the veteran trio of seniors
Jordy Mitchell and Isaiah Perry and junior
Connor Paquin. Newcomers hoping
to make an impact at runningback
include juniors Asa Kershner, Gage
Landon, Jeremy Malone, and JP Reagan
and the lone sophomore on the varsity
roster, Josh Manley.
“We’ve got some good depth at runningback,”
Diagostino noted. “We have
a lot of confidence in the kids that are
coming back and we’re expecting good
things from the younger guys.”
Senior Tyler Simms is the lone returnee
in a young but capable corps of split
ends that includes juniors Zachary Babcock,
Andrew Harvey, Kyle Nicholson,
Billy Orlando, Noah Serabian and Xavier
Viskovich.
The Raiders will also be counting on a
new signal-caller this fall as juniors Josh
Belisle and Rory Corcoran, who played
a handful of games at the varsity level as
a freshman due to a rash of injuries that
depleted the varsity ranks, look to compete
for the starting job.
The Raiders will open the season at
Tupper Lake tonight. They make their
home debut the following Friday night
against OFA.
Regardless of what happens over the
course of the regular season, the Raiders
have an automatic berth to a playoff final
in late October against Potsdam Central,
the only other Class A team in Section 10
this fall.
OFA Swimmers, Harriers, Vball Poise For Outstanding Seasons
OGDENSBURG - The OFA Girls Swimming,
Cross Country and Girls Volleyball
teams will all be led by all-star caliber players
and are poised to contribute to a very
successful fall season by Blue Devil squads.
GIRLS SWIMMING SOLID
The Lady Devils’ number a modest 16 but
according to OFA Girls Swimming Coach
Ben Fleahman the talent level on his squad
is anything but ordinary.
“We don’t have a big team in terms of
numbers but we have plenty of talent. I
think the scoring that we lost from our graduated
seniors will be made up by our junior
class. Our juniors are really coming into
their own,” said Coach Fleahman who looks
for sophomore Susie Morrow, who won a
Section 10 Championship in the backstroke
last fall, to provide leadership as one of the
elite swimmers in the section.
“Susie (Morrow) swam in the offseason
and is looking forward to a great year. She
just missed the school record in the backstroke
and I would assume she would get
that very soon.”
Morrow and the rest of the Devils are
looking to improve their speed and techniques
through a training program which
Coach Fleahman has adapted from friends
in Western New York who also coach swimming.
“Its a tough program but the girls have
accepted the challenge and I know it will
produce,” said Fleahman who guided the
Devils to a 7-4 record and a third place finish
in the sectionals last season.
The OFA squad features three seniors
with outstanding work ethics in Maddie
Ward (50-100 Fs), Mackenzie Comeau(100-200
CROSS COUNTRY OPPORTUNISTIC
The OFA Cross Country squads will host
their home meets at the Ogdensburg Bridge
and Port Authority grounds for the first time
since veteran head coach Chris McRoberts
ran for the Blue and White.
Coach McRoberts looks for the season to
be a memorable one for the both the boys
and girls as they compete against programs
like Malone, Canton and Norwood-Norfolk
which have been state-ranked in their respective
classes for many years.
The OFA Boys will feature their biggest
teams in many years with a 16-person
squad led by seniors Alex Wood, Andrew
Cole, Spencer Lawrence and Tyler Knowlton.
Wood is firmly established among the
area’s best three-season distance runners
and collegiate prospect but missed the
states last season because of illness. Cole,
Lawrence and Knowlton all ran at states and
the foursome looks to form the anchor for a
very strong unit.
“Alex Wood ran very well in summer races
and Andrew Cole, Spencer Lawrence and
Tyler Knowlton all look strong.” said Coach
McRoberts who looks for junior Kurstyn
Macauley, sophomore Danielle Steenkamer
and freshman Ellen Miller to provide the
five-person Lady Devils with outstanding
leadership.
“Kurstyn (Macauley) and Danielle
(Steenkamer) are both coming off excellent
years and Ellen Miller has run some great
road races this summer.
Two other freshmen in Sara Mitchell
and Markie Willard will round out the Lady
Devils five-runner unit while competition
abounds for the Devil Boys’ top seven.
Heuvelton student Russ Jaquith, another
senior in Josh Gordon and juniors Seth
Montpelier, Seth Tebo and Vinnie Molinari
have all logged a great deal of meet experience.
Freshman Nick Vielhauer moves to
the varsity after establishing himself as the
school’s best modified distance runner last
season.
Other first year varsity runners are: Alex
Cole (Jr), Sebastian Quintillani (Jr), Garrett
Dennis (Fr), Hayden LaRock (Fr) and Jacob
Scaggs (Jr).
VBALL TEAM DEFENDS WEST
Under new scheduling format Northern
Conference Girls Volleyball matches will be
played Monday through Friday.
OFA Coach Mclean feels that she has a
team which is ready to compete hard everyday
of the week to repeat as NAC West
Champions (shared title with Potsdam last
season) and then challenge for the NAC
Class C crown.
“We have great hitters and servers and
unselfish players with a desire to do what is
best for the team,” said Coach Mclean.
“There is no fear factor in this group
when it comes to attaining two skills. This is
a very positive group and our key for success
is to maintain communication to become
consistent with our passing so we can increase
our quality sets. We will focus on our
goals daily by overcoming our weaknesses
and building upon our strengths.
Leading the team in quest of its goals are
twin sisters and three-year varsity players in
NAC West MVP Felicia and a first team All-
NAC West selection Brittaney Barr. Felicia
(Barr) led Section 10 in kills last season and
ranked among the best hitters and blockers.
Brittaney (Barr) led the West Division in
aces, ranked among the best servers in the
section and delivered big hits all season.
The duo will look to anchor the leadership
on the Devils squad which must replace
a fine cast of graduated seniors led by
first team All-NAC West middle hitter Sarah
Weir.
Returning players looking to figure
prominently in the development of the 2012
squad are: senior captain Katrina Couperus
who excels as a passer from the libero position
and as a tempo setter for team chemistry,
senior captain Olivia Bender who
worked extremely hard to take over the setting
duties, hard-serving senior Jade Casey
who will play opposite hitter and secondary
setter, junior Taylor Fisher who shows a
strong serve and developing blocking ability
at middle hitter, sophomore Sky Hoover
who serves and passes well while filling the
need for a middle hitter and sophomore
Emma Hart who owns an exceptional serve
and the ability to pass well as a setter.
Fisher, Hoover and Hart all moved up
from the JVs to play in the sectional tournament
last fall.
First year juniors Adrianna Compeau,
Jessie Logan, Brenna McPherson and Shanice
Wallace have all been complimented by
their coach for their work ethic and attitude
to make a smooth adjustment to the challenge
of the varsity level.
OFA Football Looks To
Overcome Low Numbers
By DAVE SHEA
OGDENSBURG — When the Ogdensburg Free Academy coaching staff watches
their players go through preseason drills, they see a cast of 23 featuring physical,
proven, competent and versatile athletes.
And according to their coaches, they are the type of players that will allow the Blue
Devils to be successful in the new-look Northern Athletic Conference which is actually
a throwback to the Northern League. After being merged for many years, Section
10’s NAC and Section 7 elected to go their separate ways for the regular season.
While looking to earn one of the four playoff berths for the overall NAC Playoff
championship, the Devils, who finished at 4-4 last season, will also be looking to
become the Section 10 Class C state representative on the basis of regular season
record. Canton and St. Lawrence Central are the other Class C schools.
“We have low numbers this year but it has happened before,” said OFA coach Matt
Tessmer. “I remember in Ron Johnson’s last season as head coach, we had about 22
players. But those players took it as a challenge and had a very good year.”
“We have a good group of players here and they could do the same thing. We have
to do a great job at the little things, control the things that we can control and avoid
injuries.”
Leading the Devils into the season will be four senior captains in quarterbacklinebacker
Alex Farrell, fullback-linebacker Zach Sharpe, center-defensive end John
Morrison, and two-way tackle Jake Garrison, as well as senior quarterback Nate Angel,
who emerged as one of the area’s most productive playmakers in 2011.
As a junior, Angel led the NAC schools with 849 passing yards and 14 touchdowns
and ranked fifth in rushing with 643 yards.
Angel, who played much of last season with a cast on his hand, will greatly expand
his defensive role this season in a veteran linebacking crew. That group includes Farrell,
Sharpe, fellow senior Joe Giglio, juniors Jordan McCormick and Ryan Denny,
coming off a very strong season at Canton last fall. The team’s lone sophomore is
Nolan Rufa, who will also see action in the defensive and offensive lines.
Anchored by co-captains Morrison and Garrison the line corps looms as a team
strength. The corps features three other seniors in Dave Troiano, Christian Simmons
and D.J. Swan and juniors Kevin Goolden, Zach Barr, Jacob King and Keegan Clark.
Canton Football Eyes Improvement
By JOHN TURCOTTE
CANTON — Spirit is high but numbers are low as the Canton fooball team looks to
bounce back from an 0-9 season in 2011.
“We’re down in numbers with about 23, a few guys decided not to come out, but we’re
keeping it pretty positive,” said fourth-year head coach Austin Weakfall. “We have some
good football players, but not a lot of depth.”
One of those good players is fourth-year starter Jay Proulx who will step in at quarterback
while also seeing time at running back and receiver when quick sophomore
scatback, Hunter Yeardon, runs the offense. Many Golden Bears, including Proulx, will
be starting on both sides of the ball.
“Jay is a football player. He knows, he understands football and he’d like to play on the
next level after high school,” Weakfall said.
Sophomore power-runner Peyton Vanbibber should be the Bears’ feature back this
year, replacing the graduated Eb Foote in that capacity.
The Bears moved the ball very well in a season-ending loss to Section 7 power Saranac
Lake last season and plan to continue changes in their offensive scheme implemented
against the Red Storm.
Other Canton veterans include seniors Cody Peters (WR), Jonathan Pinckney (DL),
Ricky Martin (RB) and Nathan Miller (FB/DL), along with juniors TJ Lumbard (OL/DL),
Zach Markel (OL/DL), Ryan Denny (RB), Pat Thompson (OL/DL) and Dathon Thurber
(WR/DB).
“TJ is a tough-nosed kid for us, we’re looking for big things from Ricky Martin. Nathan
Miller has really improved with his work this summer, and we’ll use Cody Peters a lot in the
passing game,” Weakfall said.
NAC Girls Soccer Teams Look To Replenish Offenses
Northern Athletic Conference Girls Soccer teams will be looking to replace
many of last year’s top goal-scorers preparing for the 2012 fall campaigns.
CENTRAL DIVISION
Salmon River: A contender in the Class B race every season under coach
Kathy Valancius, first year coach Liz Durfee enters the regular season as a
Central Divison school.
“Facing many teams we will see in the sectionals will only help us.” said
Durfee who believes her team’s strength will be the midfield graduating
several outstanding scorers in Karyss Terrance (14 goals, six assists), Karlie
Cree (8-7), and Anna Kelly (7-3). Abby Kelly returns after scoring 10 goals
last season. Other returnees include: Taylor Francis, Jaiden Mitchell, Taryn
King, Sam Ghostlaw, Emily Trombley, Dee McDonald, Kaienhwinehtha
Ransom, Carleen Soucia, and Tewasherake Barnes.
Keri Shenendehowa, Melanie Taylor, Vanna Thomas and Becca Leroux.
Massena: Coach Ryan Hayes believes his team has experience with nine
returners and strength and conditioning will be the teams asset.
“The strength of our team will be our defending, conditioning, and ball
control. We are an experienced team. . We are looking to possess the ball
and control the field of play,” said Hayes who must replace: Taylor Romeo
(1st Team NAC, 13 goals), Morgan Albert (1st Team NAC - 12 goals), and Kallie
Barnes (2nd Team NAC).
“Our strength is also our weakness,” said Burns. “We are young with only
two seniors after graduating Sanna Jaquith, Kelli Hebert, Aliza Armstrong,
and Offensive MVP Emilee Ross. But we have some very good talent returning.”
Ross led the Section in goals last season with 21.
“We’re still very young with seven freshman. I really expect our leadership
early but we hope to be very competitive at the end of the season.” said
Richardson.
Sophomore Alex Amo (7 goals, 3 assists) and junior Beth Crowley (7 goals,
NAC Boys Soccer Season Kicks Off September 7
Northern Athletic Conference Boys Soccer teams
are gearing up for a new season which will begin on
Sept. 7.
WEST DIVISION
Morristown: Dakota Marshall returns to the Rockets
camp looking to improve on his six goals and four
asssists 2011 output for his father Rich Marshall who
takes over the team from Mike Roberts after a 4-11,
4-8 West League campaign. The Rockets will also benefit
from an unbeaten 2011 Modified Soccer team
but must replace Geoff Baldwin, Kellas Lowery, Scott
Palmer and Alex Colby.
Other participants will be Skyler Cobb, Dalton
Hersey, Bobby Simmons, Aaron Stout, Ian Bailey,
Devin Dulmage, Jacob Fox, Tristan Gilmour, Zach
Kanaly, Luke King, James Richard, Jake VanArnam,
Karter VanArman, Ryan Vollmer, and Tyler Delosh.
Hermon-DeKalb: Marty Amo returns to the coach
the Demons but must replace NAC West MVP Dylan
Amo (18 goals, 12 assists) and Caulen Allen, Brady
Whitton and Zack Cleveland from a 13-4-1 season.
“We have good team speed but we’re young and inexperienced,”
said Amo who returns two major scorers
in Macauley Snell (11 goals) and Dylan Kimble (13
goals).
Also returning are Steven Gilbert, Cameron Hance,
Zach Robinson, Jaron Robinson, Brad Weller, Cody
Cardinell, Eli Smith and Garrett Villeneuve. Newcomers
are Harrison Chilton, Ryan Matthews, Brandon
McAdam, Shane Webber, Patrick Woodrow, Cody
Merritt, and Dylan Flight.
Lisbon: Coach Bill Reed feels that defense is the key
to the Knights improving upon last fall’s 7-5 record.
“We have to solidify our defense and we need our
players to play well. Everyone is working hard,” said
Coach Reed who will be assisted by returning assistant
John McBath and longtime OFA Girls Soccer
Coach Kelley Geary.
Leading the new Golden Knight cast are a pair of
Second Team All-NAC West selections in senior halfback
Adam Felt and junior goaltender Jimmy Robinson.
Robinson may also play in the midfield this season
with senior David Turri seeing time in goal in the
preseason.
Other returning players are: Ryan Buckley (Jr Def),
Cody James (Jr F), Adam Kelly (Fr F), Jake Putney (Jr
MF) and Matt Snyder (Sr Def).
First year varsity players are: Reilly Alberto (Fr MF),
Jordan Carr (Fr D), James Darcy (SR D), Connor Hammond
(Fr D), John Hunter (Jr D), Chris Measheaw
(MF/D)
EAST DIVISION
St. Lawrence Central: The Larries hope to improve
on a 2-9 inagural campaign under Julia Rose.
“We have a strong core of returning players and our
newcomers are strong athletes,” said Rose.
Paul Steenberg. Necomers include: Luke Arquiett,
Burns.
CENTRAL DIVISION
Salmon River: The Shamrocks (11-7-1) enter the
Central Division this season under first year coach
Ben Barkley after winning a Section 10 Class B title
under coach Chad Phippen. Coach Barkley believes
his team has speed and solid defenders but are inexperienced
in the scoring department and depth.
Looking to step up this season to replace Adam
Bomberry, Matt Healy, Oakley Thomas and Shawn
Avery are returnees Brady Mitchell (6 goals, 14 assists),
Newcombers include: Elden King, Tyren Boots, Austin
Leroux, Marc Mainville, Chance Monette, Tazz Oakes,
Ranatiio Perkins, Logan Smiddy, and Stephen Trembley.
Massena: Coach Pat Henrie returns to the helm after
a one year absence for the Raiders, who finished
8-8-2 last season, show quickness and willingness to
learn new skills but depth and size are a disadvantage.
Robert Cameron, Anthony Cortese, David Phillips,
Zach Fregoe, Forest Brockway, Joey LaBella and Zach
Roberts all found the scoring column last year and return
with Jason Hammill, Dan Elman, Dylan Stone,
Ian Wilson. Evan Kassian, Zach Kozsan, Dalton Mullin,
Cameron Marshal, and Josh D’Souza.
NAC Football Adopts New Playoff Format For 2012
Northern Athletic Conference football
will crown an overall playoff champion in
2012.
The postseason format was adopted
this past summer in a 6-2 vote by the athletic
directors of the football schools. The
postseason format was adopted following
the decision by Section 10 and Section 7
to end their interlocking regular season
schedule.
The four teams in the NAC with the best
overall record will play in NAC semifinals
on week eight with the week eight winners
advancing into the NAC championship
game on week nine. A lower tier playoff
will also be held involving the fifth, sixth,
seventh and eighth seeded teams.
The NAC will feature a seven-game regular
season in 2012 where the Section 10
Class B, Class C and Class D state tournament
representatives will be decided by
best overall records.
Gouverneur, Malone and St. Lawrence
Central are the Class B candidates, Canton
and OFA are the only Class C schools,
and Tupper Lake will be the Class D represenntative
for regional play. The state representatives
in Class B, C and D will play the
Section 7 representatives on the 10th week
of the season.
Since there are no Class A schools in Section
7, Potsdam and Massena will play off
for the Section 10 Class A berth on the 10th
week if the two teams do not meet in the
NAC playoffs. The Section 10 Class A representative
will meet the Section 2 state representative
on the 11th week of the season.
Boost In Numbers, Experience Lift SLC Football Expectations
By ALAIN St. PIERRE
BRASHER FALLS - Having more
choices has raised expectations for
the St. Lawrence Central football team
heading into the 2012 NAC season.
“We have strong numbers again this
year and most of the kids that were juniors
last year are coming back as seniors.
We’re also seeing a lot of potential
in the new kids and we’re already
seeing a lot more competition to earn
starting spots,” said third-year coach
Gouverneur Football Rebuilding
GOUVERNEUR - Despite going 1-8 last season, Gouverneur coach Sean Devlin
thought his team made strides.
“We had a tough year but we improved. This season, we must replace our starting
quarterback from last year in Shane Gould and all but one from our offensive
line. We definitely have been working hard with our line,” said Devlin whose
team scrimmaged General Brown on Saturday in an early test before hosting Ogdensburg
Free Academy on Saturday afternoon in its season opener.
“I thought we moved the ball well offensively on the ground and through the
air but defensively we just didn’t stop a very talented General Brown team whose
team looks like one of the better teams. I felt good about the progress we did
make and we had a few players out too. We’re looking one game at a time. And
Ogdensburg, one of our biggest rivals, is first. It’s been 11 or so years since we’ve
got a win against OFA,” Devlin noted.
Taking over the signal calling for 2011 Don Petty Memorial Award winner
Gould is Mark Horne.
Also not returning are Lucas Bulsiewicsz, Kyle Bigwarfe, Dustin Earlywine, Nathan
Guesford, Ben Mulvaney, Mike Roll, Ricky Sides, Jacob VanOrnum, Brendan
Ward and Aaron Wing.
Horne, a senior , will make the move from running back to quarterback, finished
with 411 yards on 71 carries and five touchdowns in 2011’s regular season.
Horne also caught 17 balls for 188 yards and will play as a defensive back.
“Mark is a very athletic and is a tough kid. We have a lot of expectations for
Mark this season. Despite our offensive line being young we have some experienced
players in the backfield,” Devlin noted.
Senior Tanner Spillman (RB/DE) had 40 carries for 175 yards last season and
senior Levi Love (RB/LB) was the second with 156 yards and two touchdowns on
just two catches.,
Horne and Spillman, along with senior Hunter Ayen (FB-LB), are expected to
lead the defensive unit. “We’re young at defense too but they’re working hard,”
Devlin noted.
Returning from last year’s team are: Kacy Barley (Jr. WR/DB), Justin Cummings
(Sr. LB/FB), Curtis Fuller (Sr. FB/LB), Troy Gates (Soph. TE/LB), Daniel Neuroth
(Sr. OL/DL), Brandon Washburn (Sr. OL/DL), and Cody Woods (Sr. WR/DB).
Newcomers include: Cody Ashley (Jr. TE/DL), Kevin Burns (Jr. OL/DL), Dustin
Bullock (Jr. OL/DL), Edward Cushman (Sr. OL/DE), Jose Flores (Soph. RB/DB),
Ryan Hight (Jr. TE DE), Dustin Hutton (Jr. OL/DL), Spencer Knowles (Jr. OL/DL),
Kevin Manning (Jr. WR/DB), Aaron McEathron (Soph. OL/DL), Adrian McShane
(Soph. RB/DB), Brandon Ramos (Jr. WR/DE), and Mason Wing (Jr. OL/DL).
“We haven’t played Malone in a while but we heard that they’re very good
again this season. It’s going to be a battle every week.” added Devlin.
Bill Scharf as the Larries look to improve
on the 1-7 mark they posted last
fall.
“We really have multiple options at
every position which is something we
haven’t had in a while,” he added. “We
know we’re in a tough league but the
kids are really working hard and with
the added experience, we should be
able to compete.”
Senior Devon Euto, who handled
the majority of the snaps at quarterback
last season, is slated to return at
the helm of a revamped Larries’ offense
that boasts a stable of nine runningbacks.
Senior Dakota Vallance
is expected to be the top ball carrier
while classmates Jessi Greer, Corey
LaBarge, Tyler Smith and John Butler
should get their share of hand-offs
along with second-year junior Devon
Agen. Senior Kyle Montroy is slated to
split time between tight end and fullback.
First-year players looking to earn
playing time out of the SLC backfield
include sophomores Caleb Gomes and
Tyler Losey while juniors Mike Burns
and Brad Francis are the team’s backup
quarterbacks.
“We have quite a few guys that can
run the ball and we’re looking to take
advantage of that,” noted Scharf.
The Larries also return to a solid
core of linemen that includes seniors
Chuckie Hartson, Brandon Lashomb,
Troy Ramsdell and Sean Roshia along
with juniors Gavin Chase, Hunter
Ramsdell and Kris Tabor, who missed
most of last year after suffering an
early-season injury. Newcomers showing
strong potential at the line positions
include junior Tyler Huckle,
Kyle Lashomb and Mike Ziser as well
as sophomores John Cherniak, Josh
Goodreau, Chris Gray, Nathan Johnson,
Jon Rubado-Lavare, Thane Ramsdell
and Joel Truax.
Expected to split time at tight end
are returning seniors Cole Laflesh and
Todd Ramsdell and veteran juniors
David Plante and Tayler Richard.
“We want to start as many kids as
possible so that the same ones aren’t
out on the field the whole time,” noted
Scharf.
The Larries, who competed in Class
A for the post-season in previous seasons
due to merger agreements with
several neighboring school districts
that don’t offer football, have only retained
their affiliation with Parishville-
Hopkinton this fall and will be in the
Class C playoffs along with Canton and
OFA.
They make their 2012 NAC debut
on Saturday, September 1, at home
against Potsdam Central starting at
1:30 p.m.
