some ministers. The finalists are chosen by each club following interviews
at local school level and beating off strong competition. The students have
the experience and benefit of an interviewing process and many students
find this an invaluable benefit, preparing them for future interviews and
jobopportunities. Youghal Rotary Club New Generations Committee have
the highest praise for the participants, mentioning timekeeping and punctuality
EARLIER STARTS OR 'MEETINGS ON THE MOVE' BEING CONSIDERED
BY YOUGHAL COMMUNITY ALERT
By Christy Parker
Youghal & District Community Alert group is considering options that
might boost attendances at its monthly meetings. Amongst the measures
being contemplated are switching to morning or afternoon meetings
instead of the present 7.45 pm and with increased accent on providing a
community information service and regular guest speakers. Meetings
may convene in bar or function rooms, with accompanying refreshments.
This would replicate November's meeting, which was held in the Nook
bar on a midweek morning and attracted some new faces and favourable
observations. On the downside, it is known that some people were not
comfortable with attending a pub (let alone in the morning to hear warnings
on drug abuse!).
Another alternative would see the group remain in situ at Cumann na
Daoine but times during the day or evening to facilitate those attending
other events to proceed to the Community Alert meeting thereafter. A further
innovation being considered is to rotate meetings in various residential
centres in co-operation with various community committees and
where there would be particular emphasis on issues within that community
or estate, etc. One argument however against change is that fluctuating
meeting times is probably not for the best.
The issue was raised at December's meeting by Chairman Des Davis,
before a handful of regulars who have emerged as the group's core and
driving force. The poor attendances can be interpreted in several ways,
not all of which are negative. The absence of serious crime (at the risk of
tempting fate) probably dilutes interest, while the media coverage perhaps
provides many people with sufficient information on developments.
Equally, it was observed at December's meeting, elderly people in particular
are reluctant to travel at night due to the cold and darkness and the
cost and requirement of public transport. "Besides, without tea and
scones, it's very hard to get anyone to come out at night anyway!", noted
one man at December's meeting.
Having existed, albeit relatively dormant, for many years through the
efforts of founder Moss Lynch, the Y&DCA was effectively re-launched
three years ago following a 'Halloween nightmare' of vandalism and criminality
on the main streets. The circumstances saw the early meetings well
attended. In later times, quality has surpassed quantity, enabling the group
to bring indelible improvement to the community. This is reflected particularly
in the acquisition and installation of over 100 socially monitored
alarms along with formation of the highly valued Care and Repair service
and the Community Bus initiative which were offshoots of the local
Community Alert movement.
Yet, as the chairman stressed, larger attendances such as convenes at community
alert meetings in other jurisdictions, remains an ambition. The
matter will be discussed further at January's meeting.
Earlier, December's meeting saw Mossie Murphy circulate his treasurer's
report, which showed current assets at €1,759.45.
Crime Statistics
Community Garda Peter Queally then provided crime statistics covering
the period October to December. These were as follows: Thefts: 7;
Assaults: 2, including one serious incident that coincided with the burning
of a hearse and a couple of burglaries, all of which were perpetrated
by the same people on one particular night. Arrests had been made and
court proceedings were anticipated;
Drugs: 9 for possession (own use) and 2 for sale and supply;
Criminal Damage: 6, some of which involved stones and eggs being
thrown on Halloween night. The garda pinpointed an increase in antisocial
behaviour in the town, particularly in the vicinity of the College
Gardens and Adoration Chapel but also on the main street. He said
ASBOs had been issued and more would follow, along with whatever
measures the gardaí deemed necessary to problem including, in due
course, court proceedings. In response to an inquiry from the floor, he
clarified that ASBOs can also be served on adults;
Theft/MPV (breaking into and stealing from private vehicles) 2: Garda
Queally stressed that goods and valuables should be concealed form view
at all times to discourage this common and simple crime;
Drunk Driving: 3; Domestic Incidents (violence in the home): 5, which
were referred to the HSE; Burglaries: 3; Underage Drinking: 1; Public
Order Offences: 7.
The chairman Des Davis welcomed evidence that an increasing amount
of people appear to be availing of services that assist in treatment for drug
problems. He added however, that prevention being better than cure, the
community at large should not cease to consider ways to dissuade people,
particularly the young, from falling into the trap of drug taking in the first
place.
Alarms
Garda Queally said there had been about 30 socially monitored alarms
installed over the past year, at a grant-aided cost of €6,600. Currently, the
group owed about €600 to alarm installation company TASK, in lieu of
different alarm pendants and watches, re-installation of alarms handed
back, etc. It was agreed to pay this forthwith.
From the floor it was mooted that people in rural areas be prioritised for
future alarm installations as several people in town had changed their
minds about retaining the devices. A reluctance to pay the €60 annual
maintenance fee was cited as a prime reason for this. However it was
decided that any discrimination in the installation of alarms would be a
mistake in practice.
Garda Queally said uptake on smoke alarms remained low.
Simultaneously, it was noted, individuals who had applied for smoke
alarms were experiencing delays in acquiring them because there needed
to be about ten or so applications made before Cork County Council
would provide them. Garda Queally said the delay was also due to the
county council's failure to return some application forms that had been
forwarded to the wrong department.
Carbon monoxide
Community Alert Treasurer Michael Beecher drew attention to the issue
of carbon monoxide alarms. He said they were available for €29 in hardware
shops. He stressed the inherent danger of (odourless) carbon
monoxide emissions in particular at Christmas, where extra electrical
could prompt sudden energy surges. The group agreed to consider the
possibility of subsidising such alarms for those who could not afford
them. This will be considered more fully at January's meeting along while
the possibility that currently available smoke alarms also monitor carbon
monoxide is also to be investigated.
Attention then turned to a house in the town that has become available for
rent, as a voice from the floor asked whether a plea from the group could
be made to the landlord that the incoming resident/s would be of good
character. The issue was raised on foot of a death having occurred in the
premises previously and consider distress having been incurred subsequently
by a neighbour who was mourning the passing of close relative at
the time. Another contributor suggested the "residents' network" make
recommendation. Garda Queally said he would recommend that the gardaí
follow up the issue and this was agreed.
The next Community Alert meeting will be held in Cuman na Daoine on
Tuesday January 3rd at 7.45 pm
Two-day budget delivers one more
devastating blow - Sandra McLellan TD
The Government's novel approach in delivering
this year's budget over two days has
done nothing to lessen the blow for families
right across the state, according to Sinn Féin
TD for Cork East, Sandra McLellan.
Speaking in the Dáil after the conclusion of
the Minister for Finance's statement she
said:
"This is the first time we have had an opportunity
to see the colour of this Government's
mettle. For a long time they have made the
case that Fianna Fáil created this mess, but
on their very first outing they haved shown
their willingness to continue it. This Government, just as Fianna Fáil did
in the previous four budgets, made sure that it was the most vulnerable in
our society that would suffer most, and disproportionately so.
"High earners remain protected as young people with a disability, carers,
widows, lone parents and people, particularly elderly people, who are
dependent on fuel allowance, were targeted in a clear indication of the
Government's priority. It is truly unbelievable."
"The Government had choices to make in this Budget, between those who
have and those who have not; between those who can afford to pay and
those who can't; between the strong and the weak; the vibrant and the vulnerable.
They chose the former at every opportunity. Yet again those least
able to fight their corner have been indiscriminately targeted. In
February's General Election people voted for change. This budget is more
of the same. It provides no solutions for ordinary people. It provides no
solutions for the economy."

OWNERSHIP OF LIGHTHOUSE OFFERED TO
YOUGHAL TOWN COUNCIL
But attached dwelling not on the gift list
By Christy Parker
The transfer of Youghal Lighthouse into the care of Youghal Town Council
was the subject of a presentation to December's town council meeting by
Tim Ryan, the Inspector of Local Aids to Navigation for the Commission
of Irish Lights (CIL).
Mr Ryan began by explaining how the CIL, which dates back to 1665,
remains tasked with responsibility for Irish lighthouses, north and south of
the border, under the 1894 Merchant Shipping Act. The commission oversees
general (outer harbour more or less) navigation across 80 lighthouses,
145 buoys, 488 beacons and several electronic aid mechanisms such as
marine DGPS's, along with 4,200 local (inner harbour) navigation aids,
including sea farming.
Technological advances have now surpassed the need for many navigational
aids, inclusive of lighthouses and every five years the CIL reviews its
remit. Elaborating, Mr. Ryan explained that "there are two buoys south of
Youghal to warn general shipping of the dangers from the Barr Rocks and
the Blackball Ledge. The lighthouse in turn guides local shipping to the
north or west of the dangers. Effectively, if need be, the lighthouse could be
replaced by three more buoys."
Under this criteria, a CIL review in 2010 deemed Youghal lighthouse an aid
to local navigation only. Government funding, strictly audited, now only
supports assistance to general navigation aids, so the commission wants to
hand over the Youghal Lighthouse to the local authority. Similar arrangements
continue to occur throughout the country, whereby the CIL will provide
advice and assistance but will not advance monetary support.
On departing the CIL would bequeath a large quantity of the 1,000 watt
bulbs (two a year) required to flash warnings, but the remaining cost of
maintaining the acquirement was estimated at about €5,000 a year. It was
agreed that the structure could generate income towards this through
tourism initiatives, as has occurred in similar circumstances elsewhere.
No house
Cllr Mary Linehan-Foley was first to voice the general feeling that the
Youghal Lighthouse, in common with the Clock Gate and Town Walls is
iconic to Youghal and has to be maintained. So far so good, but the discussion
hit the rocks somewhat when Mr Ryan explained that the CIL is only
parting with the lighthouse and its adjoining out houses. It will retain ownership
of the nearby dwelling and garden that also occupy the compound.
The reason for this is quite simply that this section -currently leased as a
holiday home- has a market value, which the CIL is in the process of defining.
The CIL envisaged erecting a 2m high dividing fence between both
aspects, while creating a separate entrance for the garden. Rejecting this
notion, Cllr Liam Burke argued that, "It has been a complete site since
Norman times. In fact the Norman's brought over nuns from the Order of
St. Ann in France to run the lighthouse. A dividing fence would tarnish its
historical integrity and reduce its heritage value," he argued as he asked that
CIL consider providing the house as well.
Mr Ryan was not of a mind to give away houses however. He suggested two
alternatives. "You could either buy it or, perhaps, lease it," he urged. When
light is thrown on the market value of the house and garden, he will inform
the council.
SAVE YOUGHAL AMBULANCE PROTEST ILLUSTRATES REALITY
Niamh O'Mahony and Mayor Eoin Coyne pictured at the ‘Save Youghal
Ambulance’ protest.
By Christy Parker
The Save Youghal Ambulance Group's latest protest against the HSE 's
proposed changes to the east Cork ambulance service included dramatic
simulations of a fatal car accident and a resuscitation scene.
Those attending last Saturday's demonstration adjacent to the Community
Hospital, witnessed the surreal replication of a young man, his leg askew
and near severed, blood (or red dye presumably!) pouring from his head
while his female passenger lay motionless and bloodied in the wreckage
of their grey Vauxhall. Paramedics fought desperately to resuscitate a
third occupant on the grass verge while a blue blanket covering all but a
hand and protruding shoes of a fourth unfortunate indicated that any medical
assistance would sadly come too late.
A placard towering over the wrecked car asked, "Will we die waiting?" in
reference to the HSE's planned reconfiguration of the ambulance service.
Other placards haunting the grisly scene touted sentiments such as, "HSE
makes Cuts Bleed" and "Employee of the Year -the Grim Reaper."
Sinn Féin TD Sandra McLellan, Youghal Mayor Eoin Coyne and Youghal
Town Councilors Michelle Hennessy, Eoin Flanagan, Michael Beecher
and Tara O'Connell, who is also Chairwoman of the Save Youghal
Ambulance group were amongst those who braved the icy midday wind.
Others present included Youghal Concerned Citizens member Jimmy
Flanagan and Adrian Hyde.
The protest comes as the HSE's prepares to begin implementing changes
to the Cork & Kerry ambulance system in east and north Cork early in
2012. The plans include replacing overnight on-call paramedics and
Youghal's fixed base ambulance with a 'roaming' first responder paramedic
car and a non-emergency vehicle, along with 33% reduction in
ambulances in the Cork/Kerry region.
Critics fear emergency ambulances will have long distances to travel and
are also unhappy with the Executive's plans to man rural first responder
vehicles with volunteers trained in defibrillator use, in a cost-reducing
measure that would also reach its HIQA targets for responding to cardiac
incidents. This is a far cry from the "advanced paramedics" first mooted
when the plans were aired.
United message
Labour Minister of State for Research and Innovation, Seán Sherlock's
has called for the plans to be postponed, labelling them dangerous to the
public as matters stand. Deputy Sherlock, who is also chairman of
Mallow Hospital Action Committee, echoes the view that there are many
details yet to be adequately processed, "particularly in relation to rural
communities." He adds, "It should be phased in on a trial basis first."
Meanwhile Deputy McLellan described Saturday's protest as echoing previous
protests in sending "a strong, clear message of 'hands off our ambulance'
to the government, Health Minister Dr. James O'Reilly and the
HSE." The TD added, "From the first meeting in the Walter Raleigh last
summer, we all agreed that this would be a non-political campaign, that
everyone would work together, GP's committee members, politicians and
the public and we have to keep that work going. Everyone has worked
tremendously hard and even by turning up at protests they are helping our
situation."
Mayor Coyne described the simulations as "a sign of what could become
a reality if the cuts are made to our ambulance service. We will keep up
the fight as long as we can and s best we can to make sure we retain our
ambulance service in Youghal and East Cork." The mayor said he was not
particularly in favour of on-call as it stands but would want 24-hour on
duty service ideally.
Both Deputy McLellan and the mayor were in agreement on the on-call
situation, which Chairwoman and Cllr O'Connell described as "a separate
issue within the ambulance service" and which involved unions and funding
and so on. We're not getting involved in that side of it," she added.
"We are simply citizens fighting to keep our ambulance."
All three speakers are equally united in welcoming first responders "if
fully trained to advanced paramedic standards," as Deputy McLellan put
it, "but only in addition to the present ambulance service and not instead
of. A rapid respond vehicle manned by a paramedic is not the same as an
ambulance manned by an advanced paramedic," she proceeded, "so obviously
we want to be sure that everybody gets the correct proper training
to ensure that happens. We want everyone trained to be an advanced paramedic."
Adrian Hyde and Jimmy Flanagan of
Y.C.C.
Helen Heaphy-Grange and victim
Darragh Matthews.
Local protestor Bernard Leamy, perhaps illustrated the essence of the
campaign most poignantly of all as he recalled a recent and first-hand
experience. "My son Shane, who is 21, was taken very ill last Saturday
and we had to call the Youghal ambulance at 2.45 am. It arrived within 15
minutes. Under the HSE changes it might take an hour to arrive but last
week, thanks to the Youghal ambulance, he was in hospital within that
hour."
Meeting
Meanwhile, last week the HSE agreed to meet a delegation consisting of
Youghal doctor Declan Matthews, Dr Bertie Daly of Newmarket, North
Cork and Cllr O'Connell to discuss their concerns. The meeting will be
held in Naas on Tuesday Dec 20th. "The HSE is not au fait with the
demands and conditions pertinent to rural areas and we will be stressing
that this untested system could cost lives," says the councillor.
Kathleen Troy and Theresa O'Connell.
Cllr. Michelle Hennessy and Thomas
O'Mahony, East Cork Ógra Sinn Fein.
Helen Heaphy-Grange and Violet Cunningham at the ‘Save Youghal Ambulance’
protest.

REPAIRS FOR ELDERLY
SCHEME A SUCCESS
A voluntary service for the elderly has been hailed a success as it celebrates
its first year in operation. Youghal Care and Repair will be one year
in existence on November 1 and, over the past year, has helped the town's
elderly with its free service. Care and repair came about as a result of the
monthly Community Alert meetings in the town and is part of a nationwide
initiative by Age Action Ireland to help the elderly in their own
homes. The Youghal branch is being overseen by Cumann na Daoine.
The service is available to over 65's who need small repairs and jobs done,
such as painting, gardening, changing bulbs, hanging curtains, lawnmowing,
laying carpet and lino or even hanging doors. Free of charge, the
service is staffed by a panel of eight full-time volunteers who have undertaken
training with Age Action Ireland and have all been garda-vetted.
Once a call is made by an elderly person to Cumann na Daoine, two volunteers,
both carrying identification, will be chosen to call to the person's
home. Over the past 12 months, 44 jobs have been carried out by the team
of volunteers.
Community Garda and Care Repair PRO, Peter Queally, said the response
has been tremendous. "People are really happy with the service and can't
believe it's free" he said. Garda Queally is now urging more people to
avail of Care and Repair. As well as the users appreciating it, the volunteers
are also enjoying being able to help people," Garda Queally said.
The service is also looking for volunteers, particularly drivers, young people
and tradesmen who may be out of work, to give up a little time to Care
and Repair.
Anyone wishing to avail of the Care and Repair service or volunteer their
time can contact Cumann na Daoine on (024) 91900, Monday to Friday,
from 9.30am to 5pm. The intention of the group is not to interfere with
the work of local tradesmen.
The following are some of the comments of satisfied customers:- "I'm
very happy with what they done", "It's great when they do something for
you", "Fantastic", "Outstanding" and "I thought they were brilliant".
Christmas Stories from Long Ago: Following our last popular feature
from our good friend Mike Hackett we have some more of his wonderful
festive stories from Christmas long ago this week. My sincere thanks
to Mike for his wonderful contribution …………
While talking about the country postman, let me mention that a number
of people in the 1930s could not read nor write. They depended on their
pal, the postman, to read letters to them that had been sent from their
exiled sons and daughters in England and America. A very funny story
tells of a postman reading (inventing) the last line of every Christmas letter
as 'Don't forget to stand to the poor postman for Christmas'.
Parcels from America arriving on the liners at Cobh was a big bonus for
many an Irish family in the 1930s during the Economic War with Britain
-- when it was difficult to sell farm animals at the fairs. Those parcels
brought bright new clothes -- colourful dresses for the women and bright
suites and ties for the men. Eyes were popping at Mass on the following
Sunday, as the whole parish admired the latest styles and colours worn by
the lucky ones.
Another story tells of three postmen in the city working from one van as
they delivered loads and loads of Christmas parcels in the suburbs. One
man was driving the vehicle while the other two ran up and down the
driveways delivering as fast as they could. Then as one postman
approached a posh house with a big parcel, he noticed a woman jump up
excitedly from inside the window. He sensed that there was a good chance
of a Christmas 'Box' at this house. Right enough the woman took the parcel
and then presented him with a five-pound note -- this was a huge stand
at that time -- in the 1950s. But the postman decided to push his luck a bit
further by saying 'Thank you Mam -- but there are three of us and what is
five divided by three?' He was being a cute fool -- fishing for another
pound! 'Oh I'm sorry' said the woman 'one moment please'. She soon
appeared with three single pound notes! 'Now my dear man -- Happy
Christmas to the three of you- said she taking back the fiver
YOUGHAL TOWN COUNCIL DECEMBER MEETING
By Christy Parker
Report of the Town Clerk on matter arising since the Monthly
Meeting of Youghal Town Council held on 15th November 2011.
Proposed Aldi Development at Seafield, Youghal.
Youghal Town Council as Planning Authority for the area granted planning
permission to Seafield Partnership for permission to construct a
mixed use neighbourhood centre on the southern part of the overall site
(c1.9ha), comprising a single storey discount food store, 1445m2 ground
floor area including a loading bay, dock leveler and ramp, trolley bay, bin
store and external plant area; 3 single storey retail units 934m2 gfa and an
external bin store. The development will include the demolition of all
structures on site, including the demolition of a habitable house, with the
exception of part of the southern façade of the existing factory unit which
incorporates a Protected Structure (RPS 3202), 179 no. car parking
spaces, loading bays, a covered pedestrian walkway, cycle racks, upgraded
existing vehicular accesses from the Upper Strand Road, new internal
vehicular accesses off the internal public road, the diversion of existing
surface water culvert on site including the installation of 2 no. attenuation
tanks at the former Seafield Technical Textiles Ltd. site at Seafield ,
Killeagh Road, Youghal. During the planning period four
submissions/objectives were received by the Planning Authority in relation
to the proposed development. They were;
1. A submission by David Kelly Partnership on behalf of Seafield
Business Centre Management Co. Ltd. which was broadly in favour of
the proposed development.
2. A submission by HRA/Planning Ltd. on behalf of Mr. Oliver Daly, 146
Ros Caoin, Rosam, Galway objecting to the proposed development at that
location.
3. A submission by John & Anne Fitzgerald, Dun Mhuire, Upper Strand,
Youghal requesting that permission should be refused.
4. A submission by RG DATA requesting that permission should be
refused.
Planning permission was granted by Youghal Town Council on 22nd
November last subject to 30 conditions. The applicant together with the
people who made submissions may appeal the decision within 4 weeks of
the grant of permission to An Bord Pleanala. Hopefully from the Town
perspective this may not materialise.
First Annual Social Housing Stock Survey;
The Minister for the Environment, Community and Local Government,
Mr. Phil Hogan T.D. has requested all Local Authorities to prepare the
first in a series of surveys on the local authority's social housing stock.
This survey is a key element of the new approach to improving the social
housing stock, which seeks to consolidate the existing remedial works
and other improvement programmes to operate a more target/output driven
programme with a streamlined approach to project approvals and capital
funding. The survey, the first in the series, aims to establish the baseline
for the development of consolidated (annual) housing improvement
programmes and for the measurement of the outputs of those programmes,
allowing greater delegation of responsibility to local authorities
in meeting the particular needs of their stock.
As advised in Circular SHIP 2011/05, the annual social housing stock survey
will involve two stages - firstly a desktop exercise based on information
available in local authority databases and on the iHouse system and,
secondly, a programme of inspections by the Department's Technical
Advisers for a more in-depth review of stock quality.
Please note that the survey returns will be used in determining each
authority's capital allocation for improving the social housing stock in
2012.
1. 2012 Social housing Stock Survey - Electronic Returns.
At this stage, it is not necessary to provide information on stock currently
rented by the authority under RAS or the Social Housing Leasing
Initiative for affordable housing stock owned by the local authority. Stage
1 of the 2012 social housing stock survey requires all housing authorities
to provide the following information on each unit owned by the authority.
a) Housing Authority - Please note that this information is being gathered
on a county at large basis, whereby a single report for each county should
be submitted. The relevant town or borough council that owns the properties
should, however, be identified under the "owning authority" heading;
b) Address including, house number, street name, and county.
c) GIS co-ordinates (xx,yy) - these should be included where available. If
however, GIS co-ordinates are not available for a particular property, then
these fields should be left blank.
d) Property Type - this should include details of whether the property is
terraced, semi-detached or detached and the number of storeys.
e) Property Status - this requires information on whether the property is
occupied or vacant.
f) Letting Status - Authorities should identify whether the property is
available for letting, awaiting minor repairs, in need of major refurbishment,
or be demolished.
g) BER - if available a Building Energy Rating should be provided. If
none is available, this field should be left blank.
h) Radon - Authorities should advise whether a radon test has been conducted.
A yes/no response is sufficient.
i) Property Acquisition - this field requires information as to whether the
property was constructed by the authority or purchased under an acquisition
programme.
j) Year of construction.
k) Number of bedrooms.
The date for completion of this stage is Friday 13th January 2012.
2. Spot Checks:
It is the Department's intention to also undertake a physical review of a
number of local authority housing estates over Q1 2012. This review, to
be undertaken by the Department's technical advisers using a methodology
similar to that undertaken as part of the recent, unfinished estates
exercise, will involve an examination of the following:
- Estate Management;
- Tenure Mix (details of which to be supplied by the Local Authority);
- General external condition of the housing stock;
- Energy Efficiency Data (where available from BER surveys)
Authorities will be notified in advance of the inclusion of their estates in
this review.
3. 2012 Social Housing Improvement Programmes.
As part of the preparation for the 2012 capital allocations, the Spring
Housing Action Plan meetings, and related discussions with t he
Department, authorities are asked to prepare initial submissions for a consolidated
Social Housing Improvement Programme for 2012. This should
be informed by the following:
- Carryover on existing programmes from 2011;
- The prioritisation of addressing vacant properties;
- Estate-wide improvement works;
- Once-off adaptation works where specific needs have been identified.
These programmes should, as far as possible, reflect the current standards
of the authorities' stock, and will be reviewed by the Department in that
context. Allocations will be made on the basis of programmes that most
accurately meet the priority needs of the authority's stock i.e. addressing
vacancies and energy efficiency works, in the context of the overall
national funding available.
The closing date for this process is Friday 20th January 2012.
The meeting was attended by Town Manager Patricia Power, Town
Clerk Liam Ryan, Deputy Town Clerk Helen Mulcahy, Town Engineer
Paul Murray, Town Foreman Ger Lupton, Mayor Eoin Coyne (FF) and
Cllrs Barbara Murray (FG), Michael Beecher (FG), Michelle Hennessy
(SF), Eoin Flanagan (SF), Liam Burke (GP) Tara O'Connell (Lab),
Sammy Revins (FF) and Mary Linehan-Foley (FF).
The meeting was permeated by complaints from Cllr Michael Beecher who
found the fan heater system adjacent to which he was sitting aggravating
towards his throat and his asthmatic condition. As the councillor's coughing
and hoarseness increased, he turned off the heating. This rapidly decreased
the room temperature much to the discomfort of his chamber colleagues,
particularly Cllr Michelle Hennessy, who sits alongside Cllr Beecher but
who was suffering flu symptoms. In a co-operative effort unprecedented in
Irish politics, the Fine Gael and the Sinn Féin representatives even swapped
seats in a bid to assist each other. Sadly it proved great in gesture but short
in success as eventually Cllr Beecher, hoarse, terse and half way through his
third packet of Strepsils, made a heartfelt plea that the system be replaced
by "proper storage heaters." It remains to be seen whether this demand on
democracy will be met.
The meeting began with what would transpire to be a lengthy diversion
into matters of the departed, following confirmation that Youghal Town
Council would heretofore operate the Joint Burial Board in conjunction
with Cork County Council. The town manager turned the sod on the
debate as she revealed that the burial budget for 2012 included €40,000
towards upgrading the cemetery lodge and €20,000 towards the provision
of a future graveyard. Additionally the budget provides, for the first time,
for two 'cremation garden' plots @ €300 per plot, thought these plots
would "not be available as advanced sales." Ms Power said Youghal Town
Council would contribute €64,765 towards the Burial Board's expenditure
for 2012, while Cork County Council would pay €33,000 for the same
purpose. The town clerk then explained the debt in terms of anticipated
expenditure being €114,029 and income €16,000, leaving a deficit of

YOUGHAL TOWN COUNCIL DECEMBER MEETING
Page 2
Plots of room… Mr Ryan then outlined a €100 increase in grave prices
for 2012, meaning a single grave would cost €700, a double plot €1,400
and a triple size plot €2,100. Cllr Revins remarked that there was no cost
reduction in acquiring double or triple plots but the town clerk explained
that here was "no sense in incentivising" such plots given the limited
space in the cemetery. Elaborating, he said three, six and nine people can
be interred in the respective plots but that presently up to 90% of plots
were not full, because people over-estimated usage when buying them.
Children of deceased, for example, through various circumstances such as
marriage, etc., were buried elsewhere when their earthly time ran out. "So
you get one person in double plots and two in triple plots," proceeded Mr
Ryan, before noting with unintended irony that "the life cycle of the
graveyard," was being shortened due to such over expectation.
Meanwhile, he added, a grave can be re-utilised 20 to 25 years after being
filled.
The matter refused to die as Cllr Hennessy objected to the price increases
on the basis that the living were already suffering enough economic
hardship without death adding to their debts. Both Mr. Ryan and the town
manager tried to bury her concerns by arguing that Youghal was an
extremely economic place, in which to be buried, compared to the rest of
the county as documented in the auditor's report (costs have increased
100% in Dublin). Additionally, the burial costs were only about 10% of
an overall funeral expense and the money helped towards the graveyard's
perpetual maintenance, so to speak and not just the burial. Responding to
a query from Cllr Linehan-Foley, the assistant town clerk said there were
government grants of up to 90% available to people in difficult circumstances
towards burials. Cllr Beecher, rather hoarsely, said the Credit
Union would also help to bury one, though not in those precise words.
Still the issue wouldn't lie down, as it emerged that should the cost
increases not be applied, the proposed work on the lodge would be compromised.
Ultimately only Cllr Flanagan supported Cllr Hennessy's
counter-motion against the renewed costing and the increases were
approved 5-2 in a vote.
Grave concerns; No sooner had the clay settled on that issue than Cllr
Revins unearthed a fresh graveyard gripe. He wanted burial bye-law
changed to allow families of the bereaved to install level-ground kerbs
around grass graves pending agreement with the town council to care and
maintain such plots. He said people had expressed such requests to him.
Cllr Linehan-Foley supported the call, arguing that people who owned
plots had the right to this privatised, individualistic pursuance.
Cllr Murray wasn't too supportive, feeling graveyard maintenance should
primarily be undertaken by the graveyard caretaker. Mr. Ryan concurred,
as he pointed out that the section of the graveyard effectively in question
-namely N,P,Q and R-, was deliberately designed as a lawned area and
was being maintained to a high standard. Between re-openings and,
sometimes, inevitable neglect, the task of maintenance would become
very difficult if the bye-law was amended for any kerbing The town manager
-being a Cork County Council official- voiced health and safety concerns
in the land of the non-living. "You haven't listened! It's about
ground-level kerbs!" rebuked Cllr Revins in vain, as Ms Power recalled
an incident whereby an unfortunate man recently lost an eye through a
piece of flying kerb whilst strimming in a graveyard. She offered to provide
a report on the why lawn only graves were preferable. Eventually
Cllr Burke laid the debate to rest -subject to future resurrection- when his
suggestion that a subcommittee of the Joint Burial Board discuss it following
the manager's report. "I hope it doesn't go on for two years like
DeValera Street did," remarked Cllr Revins, no doubt in fear of Hell.
Meanwhile anyone with opinions on lawn or kerbing in the graveyard is
asked to convey them to councillors.
Lighthouse
The meeting was then received a presentation from Tim Ryan, Inspector
at the Commission of Irish Lights, on the proposed transfer of the lighthouse
to the care of Youghal Town Council. See elsewhere in this edition
for report on this matter.
Votes of Congratulations: Cllr Linehan-Foley congratulated teenage
athlete Fergal Curtin on his 27 All Ireland medals amassed to date, with
the previous weekend's county championships the latest addition. The
councillor also paid tribute to young boxer Adam Curley who recently
won his first bout in an Irish shirt. She extended recognition to parents of
all young athletes and achievers for their supportive efforts. An award
night to honour formally these successes is anticipated for next February.
The councillor further congratulated Clodagh Mahon, Catherine
Desmond and the heritage committee on the town hall Santa and the
Collegiate Church craft fair initiatives recently.
Cllr Murray congratulated the Youghal Concerned Citizens for their year
of events, including the on-going Dickins's Christmas celebrations that
were bringing a more festive atmosphere to the streets. She conveyed best
wishes also to Chris O'Brien of the Imperial Hotel on the launch of his
new food product (pies and chowders) product. Likewise, she acknowledged
David Browne of Youghal Bay Seafood on the development of his
new, pasteurised crab meat product. Finally, she congratulated all
involved with the crib installation at Barry's Lane.
Mayor Coyne paid tribute to Pobalscoil na Tríonóide teacher Tracy
Kennedy on being appointed the first female PRO of Cork County GAA
Board. He recognised the re-launch of the Walter Raleigh also and urged
that locals support the enterprise. The mayor then congratulated the
Youghal Junior B Football team -of which he was a member- on their
recent East Cork title.
Votes of Sympathy: These sentiments on behalf of the council are generally
conveyed in private but exception was made when Cllr O'Connell
expressed her condolences to the family and friends of the late Mary
Smiddy who died in such tragic circumstances following an electrical
malfunction in her home in Gortaroo recently.
Cllr Beecher complained once again of the heating system in the chamber
and some sympathy was forthcoming there also.
Town Foreman's Report: Cllr Burke sought remedy for potholes at
Nealon's Quay and also a wall between the Strand Church and Tennis
Court, as previously mentioned.
Dominic Collins potholes; Cllr Linehan-Foley drew attention to
"craters" at the rear of the Fair Field/Dominic Collins's Place. She knew
there was a resurfacing/lighting plan for the area but wanted the potholes
filled meantime. Likewise the footpath in that area needed levelling. The
mayor echoed the sentiment, adding concern over poor lighting in the
area.
Cllr Beecher complained similarly about the Dominic Collins's area. He
asked if double yellow lies could be installed there too to deter parking on
the footpath, given that such vehicles were causing considerable problems
for some residents who have visual impairment. The councillor then said
a section of road surface at Dolphin's Square was crumbling. He sought
information on any reaction to vile anti-social behaviour at the College
Gardens/Adoration Chapel and learned that increased lighting was being
installed there.
Parklands criminality; Cllr Beecher briefly pre-empted Cllr O'Connell
in drawing attention to rampant vandalism at an unoccupied section of an
estate at Parklands and hoped the town council could assist with a remedy.
Cllr O'Connell then described how young people have been persistently
destroying eight properties in at the lower end of Parkland. This has
included destruction of fixtures and fittings and even arson, which was
spreading fear amongst the nearby occupied houses. Some perpetrators
had had the nerve -or stupidity- of scrawling their names on the wall and
-in one case at least- advertising their criminality on Facebook. Names
had been supplied to the gardaí. Meanwhile the councillor had contacted
the developer, who had expressed a willingness to consult with the council
towards bringing the houses into occupancy.
Cllr Murray suggested that "technically" it's not a council problem and the
developer was responsible for security. She asked whether he had contacted
voluntary housing agencies and was told that this had been done to no
apparent avail. Lighting, said Cllr O'Connell, was insufficient to support
security cameras.
The town clerk said the issue was specifically a matter for the developer.
He understood also that there was agreement in place to have some houses
in the purchased but they remained unfinished, thus raising other
issues. Mr. Ryan explained that the council had taken the maximum
allowed in terms of social housing in the estate and it was not an option
to acquire any more, partly because it would "create the wrong social
mix" and partly because the government, wouldn't fund any further purchases.
Additionally, though perhaps irrelevant to the core issue raised,
Cllr Linehan-Foley said there were also unresolved serious structural
issues regarding the occupied houses. "These are all matters for the developer,"
repeated the town clerk. The mayor's suggestion that the issue be
raised at the Joint Policing Committee in January, as the increasingly
hoarse Cllr Beecher again pleaded that storage heaters be installed.
Cllr Flanagan asked that a pothole at the top of Windmill Hill be filled and
a faded road 'Stop' sign be repainted at the exit to Gort Aobhinn to Cork
Hill. Cllr Murray referred to ponding at Blackwater Heights.
Public lighting
Cllr Hennessy complained that a lot of public lights were now not working
in the town's estates. Cnoc Aobhinn was particularly bad and it was a
dark and dangerous situation. She asked how people could complain and
to whom, given they were not council-managed estates. Cllr Murray said
there were similar problems at Srathaán na Salí and elsewhere and
nobody seemed to harbour responsibility, whether architect or lighting
departments. As Cllr Hennessy reiterated that the developer was apparently
un-contactable, it emerged that a low-call number to report for mal-

or lighting departments. As Cllr Hennessy reiterated that the developer
was apparently un-contactable, it emerged that a low-call number to
report for malfunctioning lighting was posted on poles. The number was
given as 1850-372772. Office hours are 8.30-5.30 Mon to Fri; also online
reports to www.airtricity.com However, as Cllr Murray reflected, complaints
previously submitted have brought poor responses.
Cllr O'Connell sought an update on plans to prevent parking and thus alleviate
blind spots at the exit from estates across from Crowley's garage, as
raised some time back by former Cllr Donie Daly. The town clerk said an
overall plan to redefine the town entrance from the Rhincrew to
Greencloyne roundabouts would be incorporate the entrances this would
be presented to the council's February meeting. Cllr O'Connell also
echoed concerns over the potholes and footpaths at Dominic Collin's
Place. The councillor concluded with a plea that parking on double yellow
lines at the Parish Church was prevalent and needed to be addressed.
The mayor was concerned about ponding at O'Gallagher's Mews and also
opposite the entrance to Lidl.
County Council Items: Cllr Linehan-Foley asked if disabled parking
bays could be repainted on the main street and at Cuman na Daoine following
the road resurfacing. She wanted potholes at the Knockaverry
higher road repaired also. The town clerk said the area needed total resurfacing
and suggested that councillors prioritise it for next February's nonnational
road grant funding. Cllr Beecher wanted a sign for Kilcoran
Road erected as previously requested.
Parking, shredding, ponding and fishing; Cllr Hennessy complained
that an extra car parking space provided on North Main Street was too
close to the bottom of Cork Hill and so forcing vehicles to stop in the yellow
box when turning right. The councillor protested that there was no
provision for disposing of shredded paper at the landfill site, due to the
small bin apertures. The engineer said it was a matter for the county council's
Environment Department and should be raised at the county council
meeting. Cllr Beecher recalled that operatives had opened the back of a
container on his behalf in similar circumstances. Cllr Hennessy asked that
ponding problems of some seven years standing -or perhaps swimmingbe
addressed at Clonpriest, as an adjacent local, who is visually impaired
cannot now leave his house.
Cllr Murray asked that signage urging fishermen to remove all discarded
fishing lines, hooks etc., from the Slob Bank due to the danger to dogs and
children and others also using the public facility. She further requested
that the Claycastle car park be cleared of rubbish and bins, especially in
lieu of Christmas, visitors, swimmers etc.
Cllr Flanagan also drew attention to the need for disability bays to be repainted
but the town engineer said it was unlikely to occur before
Christmas. Unimpressed, Cllr Hennessy stressed that disabled people
badly needed these spaces.
Planning Applications: Following all submissions and considerations
planning permission has been granted for the Day Care centre on the
grounds of the Community Hospital, Cork Hill.
Reports: End of year reports in lieu of the Heritage Municipal Policy
Committee (Cllr Burke), HathertonLtd., T/A Enterprise Youghal (Cllr
Hennessy and Claycastle Leisure Co., Ltd (Cllr Linehan-Foley) were
each deferred to "the new Year."
Unresolved Motions: Cllr Murray drew attention to the unsightly hoardings
at the two closed off viewing balconies near Moll Goggin's Corner
be replaced with a wall, in the interests of visual presentation. Cllr
Linehan-Foley however insisted that the viewing balconies should not be
abandoned as such. The engineer said he would refer it to the Senior
Engineer and report back.
Correspondence: An application for funding assistance -€500 allocatedfrom
the Youghal Concerned Citizens group sparked concern that there
was some duplication in projects between the YCC and the Chamber of
Commerce (annual council grant of €10,000). "They (the YCC) mention
special interest handbooks, a DVD and training ambassadors," said Cllr
Linehan-Foley. "I thought that's what we give the Chamber money for."
The mayor felt both groups should "cooperate and communicate" in
addressing the issue and accepted Cllr Linehan-Foley's suggestion that he
write to both bodies with that suggestion. Cllr Murray concurred, recollecting
that Bord Fáilte was set to undertake an ambassador training programme
with the Chamber. "There's no point in duplication," she said.
Weather warnings and precautions
As Cllr Beecher gasped for survival, the town manager strongly urged
that councillors and the general public become familiar with the county
council's revised guidelines on weather and matter associated with freezing
and flooding conditions, as experienced in recent years. Information
available on the county council's website deals with all aspects of weather-related
consequences, from self, neighbour and property protection to
safe practices, insurance requirements and weather warnings. Relevant
contact assistance numbers are also provided. Additionally, information
can be downloaded in brochure format and such brochures are also available
from councillors and in most public service outlets such as town hall,
library, etc. See www.corkco.co.ie
Finally, the town clerk noted that there had as yet been no requests from
residents associations as to the location of salt and grit reserves, in tandem
with the provision for the dispersion of these reserves by such residents
if need be. Youghal Town Council is on (024) 92926. The last meeting
of 2011 concluded with Cllr Beecher first to leave the room.
U19 League
Youghal 33pts - Fermoy 10pts
Our U19s travelled to Fermoy on Friday night, December 2nd for this
important league game. Most of the first half was played between both
22-metre areas with both sides not able to make any breakthrough.
Youghal increased the tempo of the match after 20 minutes play with
strong running from James Glennon and Cillian Ansbro. This pressure on
the Fermoy defence enabled Stephen Lucey to score a fine try, which was
converted by out-half, Ciaran O'Brien. Fermoy, to their credit, came right
back into the game from the re-start and scored a well-worked try near the
corner flag. The conversion kick was missed to leave Youghal 7pts to 5pts
ahead at half time.
In the second half, Youghal got well on top and had further tries from
Stephen Lucey (2) and Cillian Ansbro (2). while Ciaran O'Brien kicked 4
conversions. Fermoy had a try near the end but Youghal ran out deserving
winners of this entertaining encounter. Players to catch the eye for
Youghal were forwards; Tom O'Neill, James Glennon and Aidan
McCarthy while Ciaran O'Brien, Cillian Ansbro and Stephen Lucey were
always prominent in Youghal's speed back-line.
Youghal 10pts - Cobh 19pts
Our U19s travelled to Cobh on Saturday, December 10th to take on the
Piratesfor league points. Youghal got off to a great startin this game when
Cillian Ansbro scored a fine solo try. However from then on the home
team dominated and had two tries and one conversion to reach half time
12pts to 5pts ahead.
In the 2nd half, Cobh had another try to put the game out of the seasiders
reach. Youghal did battle back to score through Tom O'Neill but never
looked like winning this match. Best for Youghal were James Gleenon
and Cillian Ansbro.
U17 League
Youghal 29pts - Dophin 5pts
Our u17s played city side Dolphin at Frogmore on Saturday 3rd
December for league points. Youghal were first to settle into the game and
had an early try from fullback Adam Malone, after some strong running
from Todd Cronin and Ollie Dempsey. The seasiders had further tries
from John Power and Aaron Hogan; with Aaron's try being converted by
Aidan McCarthy.
In the second half the Youghal lads continued to dominate with further
tried from Barry O'Connell and a super try from Ronan O'Sullivan, which
was converted by Aidan McCarthy. Dolphin had a late consolation score
but Youghal ran out deserving winners to claim the points. Best for
Youghal were Conor O'Leary, Ronan O'Sullivan, Todd Cronin, while
Aaron Hogan and Aidan McCarthy always tried hard.
Youghal 17pts - Cobh 0pts
Our U15s picked up valuable league points when they defeated a plucky
Cobh Pirates side at Frogmore on Saturday 10th December. Youghal were
first to settle into the game and after some good running by Harry
Oliphant and Killian Power, Finn Collier scored a superb try. The conversion
kick was missed but the Youghal lads once more took the game to the
visitors and scored again through the outstanding Finn Collier. Out-half
Declan Dalton kicked the conversion to leave Youghal 12pts to Nil ahead
at half time.
In the the second half, Cobh came more into the game and only some
good tackling by Youghals defence kept them at bay. In the breakaway
move, Darragh O'Brien scored an outstanding try for Youghal when he
gathered the ball on the half-way line to race over untouched. This was
the final score of the game. With Cobh trying hard to the final whistle but
Youghal's defence was never really troubled and they ran out deserving
winners. Best for Youghal were Finn Collier, Darragh O'Brien and Killian
Power, while Harry Oliphant, Sean Russell, Ed Hayes and Adam Curley
always tried hard.
U15 League
Youghal 15pts - Muskerry 15pts
Our u15s travelled to Muskerry on Saturday 3rd December and managed
a very credible draw. The home side played with the wind in the first half
and were well on top with 2 tries, one conversion and a penalty for a 15pt
lead. Youghal'sa only first hald score was a penalty from out-half Declan
Dalton.
In the second half, Youghal came more into the game and narrowed
Muskerrys lead with a fine solo try from James Kelly. With time running
out, Youghal launched their final play and after some good running by
Finn Collier and Chris O'Brien. Winger John-Paul Lucey scored a brilliant
try. Out-half Declan kicked the difficult conversion to tie the scores
Youghal Rugby Club
YOUTH SECTION
in this exciting match. Best for Youghal were Cuan Kenneally, Finn
Collier, James Kelly and Chris O'Brien while Mathew Sangsuwan had his
best game for the seasiders this season in the wing forward position.
U13 League
Youghal 10pts - Carraigaline 10pts
Our U13s were also in action on Saturday 10th December when they travelled
to Carraigaline for league points. Youghal played with the slope on
the home teams pitch in the first half and had an early try from speed centre
Diarmuid Clancy. The seasiders were getting on top at this stage of the
game and scored another fine try from scrumhalf Sean Hennessy to reach
half-time 10pts ahead.
In the 2nd half, the visitors dominated for long periods and scored two
very good tries of their own. Youghal tried hard to snatch the win with
Diarmuid Clancy going close on a few occasions. However, a draw was a
fair result with both teams trying hard to snatch the win. Best for Youghal
were Sean Hennessy at scrumhalf and Diarmuid Clancy at centre while
Brian Lynch had a man of the match performance at first centre.
U 13 Friendly
Youghal 24 pts - Dungarvan 14pts
enjoyable friendly. Youghal were first to score through out-half Diarmuid
Clancy and Jason Yellopwhile the visitors had a try and conversion to
leave the half time score 10pts to 7pts in Youghals favour.
In the 2nd half, Dungarvan took the lead with a well taken try but to
Youghal's credit, they hit back with tries from Diarmuid Clancy and Jack
O'Neill, with Jason Yellop converting both the leave Youghal the winners
by 24pts to 12pts. Best for Youghal were Sean Hennessy and Jack O'Neill,
Christmas comes early for Down
As Tour de Munster raises €296,000
and Tour de Munster organiser Paul Sheridan ,
Christmas has come early for Tour de Munster as a staggering €296,000
was presented by cycling legend Sean Kelly to Clare Leonard, President
of Down Syndrome Ireland (DSI)at an event held in the Silversprings
hotel in Cork last Saturday 3rd December.
The overwhelming amount was raised by 150 amateur cyclists who undertook
a four day 600km cycle around the six counties of Munster during
August, and the scores of DSI volunteers, in the annual Tour de Munster
four day charity cycle. Each cyclist covered their own expenses so that
every penny raised went directly to the charity.
Tour de Munster organiser Paul Sheridan was ecstatic with the overall
amount raised "Last year we raised €250,000 which was our best year
ever. To exceed this is just fantastic especially in very challenging times
for fundraising. We are very grateful to the many companies especially the
main sponsor Nightline Delivers and the public who supported us
throughout the past eleven years. The DSI slogan is "share the journey"
and we have certainly shared the journey with you."
First three in the Girls U9: Sarah Morrison (St Nicholas), first; Caoilfhionn Barry
(Youghal), second; Lucy McNulty (St Nicholas), third
Clare Leonard, President of DSI said "We are absolutely delighted by the
amount of money which was raised by this year's Tour de Munster. We
want to thank all of the cyclists, supporters and volunteers and in particular
to Michael O' Gorman from DSI Cork, who contacted Paul Sheridan
originally. This money is going to make a phenomenal difference in the
lives of children and adults who have Down Syndrome and we greatly
appreciate it.
That we were chosen for the second year running as the beneficiary bears
testament to the hard work all of the branch members put in behind the
scenes and during the four day tour and to the passion and commitment of
Paul Sheridan and all involved with the Tour de Munster. We are forever
grateful."
First three in the Girls U13: Laura Hayes (St Catherines), first; Tara O'Keeffe
(Midleton), second; Laura Hayes (Midleton), third
Each branch in Munster will receive an equal share of the money and has
sent in a proposal to explain how they would like to spend the money.
Areas of expenditure include Speech and Language Therapy,
Occupational Therapy as well as early intervention services which are
vital for the development of children with Down Syndrome. The money
will also be spent on sports and leisure activities which are as important
to the children, helping them to achieve their goals and be independent.
Killeagh-Ita's Juvenile GAA Notes
Fé 15 Premier 2 County Football Final
Sam Maguire's 1-10 Cilliath-Íde 0-12
Having secured the County U-15 Premier 1 hurling title in emphatic style
in November, hopes were high that our U-15's could achieve an historic
double by adding the football crown. Having disposed of St. Nick's in the
semi-final in awful conditions on Tuesday night, we were pitted against
Sam Maguire's from Dunmanway - the Juvenile club attached to the
famous Dohenys club - in the final on December 18th @ 1.00 p.m. We
arrived in the little village of Riverstick, a week before Santa, to contest
the final, with the weather thankfully more amenable than it had been on
Tuesday evening. Both teams normally don green, so both had to change
for this clash. We togged out in our football maroon and Maguire's opted
for white.
Whistle blown, the scene was set; Maguire's were very quick to settle and
had secured the opening score and only goal of the game within four minutes,
quickly followed by a point. Despite this early set back, we settled
well and plugged away, securing our opening score with a well taken free
by Eoghan Keniry. This trend continued for the next passage of play and
Eoghan secured a further two white flags for us, little between the sides.
Maguire's then took the upper hand and secured a further four points (3
frees) to stretch their lead. Not to be outdone we dominated play in the
closing minutes of this half and pulled them back with points from
Padraig Walsh and two more from Eoghan. As we approached the half
time whistle we were in hard luck not to level matters as a rasper of a shot
from the boot of Dan Landers hit the crossbar and rebounded back out to
play to deny us that much needed goal. Thus the half time score was Sam
Maguire's 1-6 to Killeagh-Ita's 0-6.
A very exciting second half unfolded as both teams exchanged points
from frees in the opening ten minutes. Sam Maguire's added another
white flag before we secured a trio of points to close the gap to just the
minimum, 1-8 to 0-10, with ten minutes remaining on the clock. These
closing minutes were very tense, with Maguire's adding two fine points to
their tally to again extend their lead, but we never gave up and again
pegged them back to the minimum, but alas the clock stopped ticking and
we were on the wrong side of the winning line by just one point. Sam
Maguire's 1-10 to Killeagh-Ita's 0-12. The joys of sport! Heads up lads,
you have done us proud throughout this long season, which began in the
very first days of January for this bunch of committed boys. Our thanks
to Declan, David and Conor for your dedication and expertise throughout
the year with these lads. We now look forward to the festive season before
we contest the football league final in 2012, best of luck to you all.
Congratulations
Our history-maker, Tracey Kennedy, is settling quickly in to her new role
as Public Relations Officer of Cork County Board, the first female to hold
an officer post in the County Board. Tracey will undoubtedly do this job
as efficiently as her previous posting as Killeagh secretary, and her other
current posting as East Cork Board secretary, and we wish her very well
in this prestigious and responsible role. Go n-eirí leat, a Threasa!
Ambulance service at breaking point
in HSE South - McLellan
Sinn Féin TD for Cork East, Sandra McLellan, has claimed the ambulance
service in the HSE South area is at breaking point and that the planned
reconfiguration of the service will drive it over the edge.
Speaking in response to leaked HSE memos Deputy McLellan said:
"Internal HSE memos revealed by the Corkman this week confirm that
there were several instances when areas in Cork were left without adequate
ambulance cover due to new work directives. The HSEs answer to
this appears to be to ask ambulance crew to routinely cover on-call after
already working a 16 hour day. This is completely outrageous and in
direct contradiction to earlier instruction issued in May."
"It beggars belief that the HSE would expect ambulance staff to be in any
fit state to deliver appropriate care after such a long day. The role paramedics
play in the pre-emergency care of patients is vital. I have said from
the outset that the HSEs plan to reconfigure ambulance services is seriously
flawed. I have called on the Government and the HSE to invest in
the ambulance fleet and in ambulance personnel. The recruitment embargo
continues to have a devastating effect on the service."
"This series of internal communications highlights the fact that the service
is at breaking point, with insufficient staff and an inappropriate skills
mix to deliver the service in the new dispensation. That the HSE would
even contemplate reconfiguring the service without addressing these deficiencies
is life threatening."

Report: Anthony Horgan PRO.
Club notes!: Youghal United will be present again this year at Tesco
doing the Christmas bag packing. We will be there on Thur 22nd, Fri 23rd
and Sat 24th December. As it will be difficult to get the coverage anyone
willing to give an hour of their time please contact a committee member
for more details. This bag packing is to generate much needed funds to
keep the club running on a weekly basis and we would like to thank all
those who have supported us in the past and hopefully again this year.
Happy Christmas!
The club would like to wish our members, their families, sponsors and
friends a very happy Christmas and a peaceful new year!
Bad weather causing games to be cancelled! The weather again has
caused havoc on the fixture list with many games been cancelled due to
unplayable pitches. There were seven home games scheduled at home this
week with only two going ahead with a mixture of soft pitches and the ice
preventing teams to travel.
Seniors Youghal United 2 - 0 Passage: Youghal continued on winning
ways in the league blasting 5 past Passage Leigh Desmond x 2, Robert
Cronin x 2 and Seamus Landers were all on the score sheet. Winning the
league is the priority for this bunch of lads this season as Youghal United
should be competing at a higher level.
Youghal United 0 - 2 Avondale: There are two divisions separating these
two sides in league standings and this was going to prove difficult for the
home side in the 3rd round of the intermediate cup when holders Avondale
came to town to try and stay in the competition. Youghal started very
bright and took the game to Avondale in a very wet, windy and extremely
cold Ardrath Park. Good numbers turned out to support on the lads
where they showed they could compete even the might of Avondale. This
could have been a totally different story only for two soft goals given
away one in each half and the fact Youghal never got on the end of some
very good crosses into the box.
All in all Youghal United represented themselves superbly and fought to
the bitter end. Speaking to the Avondale management team afterwards
they were surprised with the fight and competitiveness of the Youghal side
and were glad to get it out of the way. Youghal now can concentrate on
trying to win the league title and get into league division 1.
W.W.E.C Inch 2 - 7 Youghal United
CHAMPAGNE FOR CHIP, BUT CAREY'S GOT BOTTLE. Chris
Hennessy netted three times in the second half of Youghal's away trip to
Inch on Saturday afternoon. Trevor Carey stole the show with a display of
heart and commitment, headers won and tackles made. Youghal got off to
a flyer when Paddy Sheehan combined with Diarmuid Shuel and Mark O
Connor put the finishing touch to a great move scoring from close range
after only 5 mins. With 12 minutes gone Inch equalised from a free kick
which was headed past Youghal keeper Adrian Yellop. Youghal responded
and Carey just missed with a great header. Youghal fell behind when a
shot from long range eluded the keeper. It could have being worse for
Youghal but a fine save from Yellop kept it at 2 - 1. With 36 minutes gone
Youghal levelled when a super cross from Paul Hennessy found O Connor
his shot was cleared off the line but Shuel followed up to net his seventh
goal of the season. Just before the break Inch broke and only a superb
challenge from Sheehan stopped a certain goal. Inch kept going forward
in the second half putting Youghal under pressure but the back four of
Coakley, Troy, Spillane and Sheehan were holding out. Inch were awarded
a corner and when Coakley cleared it O Connor controlled and went on
a run, Chris Hennessy broke from midfield when O Connors cross was
perfect and the captain gave the keeper no chance when his shot hit the
top corner Twenty two minutes into the second half Youghal made it 4 -
2 when Barry on for the hard working Mason combined with Paul
Hennessy who set O Connor free and his cross was netted by Careys head.
Inch fell apart after this and Youghal pounced, a push in the area saw the
ref point to the spot and O Connor scored his second. Micheal Crowley
replaced Shuel and caused Inch more problems with his pace and was
unlucky not to score. Youghal now going forward at every chance and
Chris Hennessy scored his second with minutes remaining. Time was running
out the captain found himself free in the box again and made no mistake
to complete his hat trick. Another great result for Youghal.
Under 14's Leeds 2 - 1 Youghal United
The lads were very disappointed in the manor of how they lost this match.
They took the lead when man of the match Ian O Brien struck a half volley
into the back of the net. Unfortunately they conceded an own goal and
a very dubious penalty decision. They now head into the Christmas break
where they can work towards getting the results in the New Year.
Under 13's Youghal United 0 - 2 Riverstown
No report at time of print.
Under 12's Youghal United 2 - 0 Strand United
These boys keep on winning and winning and they are still top of the
table. Another fine 2-0 win at home to strand and after putting 7 past
Carrigtohill the week before they are growing with confidence every
week. Liam O Connor scored from the penalty spot and Kieran Daly got
the other one. Adam Hennessy again put in another fine performance.
Keep up the goof work!
New Academy Kit There has been some confusion over the price of the
new kit in recent times and I need to clarify it - the information we originally
got from the supplier was incorrect and we apologise for an inconvenience
caused. We originally announced that it cost €30 but that was for
jersey and shorts. The kit is priced at €35 which includes socks. The kit
can be tried on for size at Sports and Leisure and orders can be made
there. There will be a number of kits available mid December on a first
come first served basis and after that they will need to be ordered and you
may not have it for Christmas. Names and numbers on the back of the jersey
will cost extra.
All Weather Pitch:Youghal United's all weather pitch is available to rent
from €25 per hour and there are some mid-week times available to any
group or club wishing to avail of the facility. The contact number is 083-
3835844.
Note! Two new caretakers have commenced work with the club in looking
after our all-weather pitch. Mandatory €2 is required as a contribution
towards the mortgage payments on the all weather pitch.
Youghal RFC J2 Report
On Sunday Dec 11th the 2nd team finished their section of the J2 League
with an emphatic victory over local derby rivals Dungarvan. Playing
open fast paced rugby throughout the Youghal Boys put in their best performance
of the season so far. A fairly even opening 20 minutes saw
Youghal edge ahead with a couple of well kicked penalties by outhalf
Keith McCarthy. A try and further penalty seemed to herald a good day
but a converted try by Dungarvan kept them in touch approaching half
time. However Youghal upped the tempo in the second half and two tries
from Anthony Frahill-O’Connor along with tries from Niall Clohessey,
Scott O’Sullivan and Paddy Moloney saw the home side finish convincing
winners 39-7.
The previous week the 2nds travelled to Waterpark and lost 43- 7. Only
13 players showed up but played with great pride and passion and in fact
were only 21-7 down at half time. A try and conversion from Keith
McCarthy had Waterpark rattled until he was cruelly yellow carded giving
Waterpark a temporary 3 man advantage. An early second half injury
saw Cian Kenneally depart and a spirited Youghal team tired from their
heroic efforts.
After 6 games in the league Youghal won two and lost four. Two loses
were narrow, 12- 10 away to Dungarvan with 15 players and no subs and
23-19 away to Waterford City again with the bare 15. With a little more
commitment from some players the 2nds could have won their league section.
After Christmas the cup campaigns start and hopefully ,with more
players togging out, the remainder of the season will be successful and
enjoyable. Any former or new players are always welcome. Why not
make playing rugby your New Years resolution. Happy Christmas and Up
Youghal Ladies Football 2011 Review
2011 will hold many memories for all the members and supporters of the
newly formed Youghal Ladies Football Club. After a very successful
Gaelic4Girls Program which was run from September to November 2010
we became official on January 28th when the club was formed. In our
inaugural season we fielded 5 teams, Junior, Gaelic4Mothers, U14, U12
& U10s with over 120 players with 40 adults either playing Junior or
Gaelic4Mothers and over 80 juveniles aged 6 - 14 years olds. Highlights
of the year was of U12s winning the East Cork League and championship
which was beyond our wildest dreams when we started on this existing
journey, our U14s taking part in the Féile and a fantastic day out in Croke
Park when we took 30 girls to play on the hallowed turf.
Starting a club from scratch has not been easy. When your bank balance
reads "zero" and you need everything from footballs to bibs. Our first
fundraiser was a bag packing day in our local Supervalu which raised us
enough money to buy one full set of jerseys. Our local Youghal GAA club
have been very supportive of us allowing us to use their flood lit facility,
their indoor hall and their pitch for training and matches. They also supplied
us with a full set of jerseys for which we are very grateful. We look
forward to a future of growing stronger together. Helping us to get off the
ground the County Board could not have been more helpful with Ger
Walsh on the end of the phone on a daily basis. He also helped us with
equipment and courses. We also receive two full First Aid kits from
Alison in Youghal Pharmacy which was a great help.
On the playing front our Juniors took part in the County league division
4 and lost out to Lisgoold in the championship. With every game you
could see an improvement in their skill and positioning and their dedication
to training has to be admired. With 1 year's experience behind them
all are waiting on 2012 for the action to recommence.
Gaelic 4 Mothers kicked off in April 2011 when we had over 25 women
of all ages out on the field on a weekly basis all having the craic. The
laughter could be heard all through the club with the result that some of
the men were looking to train with us for a bit of fun! We were lucky
enough to be chosen to play in Parnel Park at the interval of the All
Ireland league finals this May, which was the highlight of the year for this
dedicated group of mothers. During July they participated in the Munster
7 a-side blitz hosted by Clonakilty and by all accounts a great day was had
by all.
Our juvenile teams had a very enjoyable year which the emphasis by all
coaches being on improving the girl's skills and giving all a run in every
game. Officially we fielded U10s, U12s, U13s & U14s in the East Cork
Leagues and championship. Our U10s lost out narrowly to Mayfield in
the plate final. Our U12s won the East Cork double beating Midleton in
both finals, while our U14s lost the championship final to near neighbours
Inch Rovers. Highlight of the season for the U14 panel was participation
in the Féile competition were we hosted Sean O'Heslins, the Leitrim
county champions. A fantastic weekend was had by all with friendships
been formed that will last for many a year to come. Our U10s & U8s also
participated in blitzs hosted by Ballyphehane and Passage, many thanks
to both clubs for fantastic day's entertainment.
As 2011 draws to close Youghal Ladies Football Club would like to thank
all of it's sponsors, coaches and mentors for giving generously of their
time, both Cork & the East Cork Boards for all of their advice, support
and encouragement in our first year and to all parents and supporters who
really encourage the girls in every match. Finally to all of the girls many
thanks for the dedication shown in both training and matches and here's
to 2012. As ye all sing "Lets Go Youghal lets Go", Eochaill Abú.
Over the past seven weeks the Club's turkey competitions have been taking
place and have now come to an end. Although weather conditions
were not on our side, members still braved the cold weather in the ever so
popular turkey competitions. Congratulations to all the prizewinners over
the seven weeks. The Club would like to thank the following butchers for
sponsoring the competitions: Sammy's butchers, Sean Twomey and The
Butcher Boy.
On Sunday last the annual Christmas Fayre came to an end in what was a
well supported and well run competition. The format of the competition
was Singles Strokeplay and the presentation of prizes took place after
Sunday's game where Billy Kenefick won the overall nett prize and All
Ireland champion Anthony O' Loughlin won the overall gross. In the
ladies' category Rita Ryall won the number one prize with Joy Bryan taking
the overall gross on the day. A special thanks to all who helped with
the catering on the day and for those who repeatedly put hours of work
into our course for which we are very proud.
Claycastle are delighted to announce that the Club has been named as the
course of the month on the FIPPA website for the month of December
2011. FIPPA is the governing body of pitch and putt in the world and was
created in March 2006. Every month FIPPA bring you photos and details
of one of the many beautiful and challenging Pitch and Putt courses from
around the world. We,as a Club, are honored by the announcement that
Claycastle is the course of the month for December and will now join a
list of clubs worldwide who have previously achieved this, such as courses
in the USA, Australia and courses all across Europe.
Claycastle course is considered to be one of the finest but toughest in
Ireland. We hope that the Club and the town will benefit as a result in the
future.
We have recently created a Club website which we hope can bring information
to any beginners thinking of taking up the great game of pitch and
putt or players returning to play the game. The website can be found at
http://claycastlepitchandputtclub.weebly.com/
The committee of Claycastle pitch and putt club would like to wish all it's
sponsors and it's members a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
“CYCLING FOR OUR CLUB” LAUNCHED AT
YOUGHAL GAA CLUB
Youghal GAA Club launched a fundraising cycle from Youghal to
Waterford at Club Aras recently. There will be 10 teams of 6 cyclists who
will be taking part. Each team member will be expected to raise €100;
Each team will have to get a sponsor for €100. So in total, each team will
be expected to raise €700. This will raise a total fund of €7,000 hopefully.
With deductions for accommodation expenses, etc, we hope to make a
net profit of €5,000 on the venture.
The cycle will depart from Club Áras at 9.30am on Saturday morning,
January the 28th. There will be a number of stops at water & food stations
along the way. These stops will allow the "peleton" to re-group, before
heading off again. The plan is to arrive in Waterford in one group at 2.30
approx. Accommodation will be provided in Waterford.
After a meal later that evening, the group will head to greyhound racing
at Kilcohan Park & then an early bed
The timelines for the return trip will be the same. This will most likely be
the most difficult leg as the cyclists may be facing the south-westerly
winds. The cyclists areexpect to return to Youghal at 2.30pm approx on
Sunday the 29th of January and cycle through the streets of Youghal
before finishing at Club Áras.
After showers & refreshments at "Our Club", we hope to have an evening
of entertainment & craic to celebrate the event & also celebrate the fact
that the playing season will be upon us once again.
For any enquiries on the event contact Kevin Curtin on 087 8128306 or
Youghal GAA Club Annual
General Meeting
Youghal GAA Club held its Annual General Meeting at Club Áras with a
very big attendance present. The outgoing Chairman of the Club David
Kilgannon thanked everyone who helped the club and himself over the
previous 12 months and congratulated the players and selectors of all
teams in the club at all grades.
Present was the Uachtaran Chumman Luthcleas Gael Crioistor O Cuanna
who also spoke to the meeting encouraging everyone to support the club
for the coming year. The President congratulated the Chairman of
Youghal GAA clubs underage section Fergal Keenaghan and his committee
and team of voulanters for their great work within the club and he singled
out Youghal GAA's Cul Camp as one of the most organised events
in the country.
Cork County Board and Youghal GAA Club Culture Officer Liam O
Laochdha echoed those sentiments and remarked that there will be two
significant dates in March for the Uachtaran.
We also, at this time, remember all those associated with the club who
have gone to their eternal reward. Former players, young and old, some
unexpectedly, passed away during the year and we remember Pádraig
Coyne, Tom Pomphrett, Donal O'Neill, Frank O'Brien. Recently, a great
friend to many of us, Tony O'Connell, a man who did tremendous work
for the club in maintaining fields and premises was called to his eternal
reward and we remember him tonight also. To all members, supporters
and families who suffered bereavements during the year, we extend our
deepest sympathy. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a h-amanacha. Our annual Mass
for deceased members and friends will be celebrated early in the New
Year, as it was not permissible to do so tonight.
Club Áras continues to go from strength to strength under the hard work
and guidance of Ken Bulman. The courtesy and commitment of Ken and
all his staff has to be acknowledged by all and without his drive, the 'buzz'
around the place would be missing. Special mention must also go to
Deirdre McCarthy for the assistance she has given Ken and the time she
has put into the club, particularly recently. Caroline Malone, who has just
completed a three year FÁS term, is thanked too for the additional work
she has put into the club when required. Special thanks also to Tony Kelly
who puts in a lot of voluntary time in the club helping out. Our thanks to
all who use the club facilities and we would ask members to think of supporting
your club throughout the year when possible.
FÁS; To all the FÁS employees who are doing wonderful work, in maintaining
our fields and within Club Aras, the club wishes to thank you for
your help and dedication to the club and the pride you take in working for
the club. Our club could not be as active as it is without your input.
BOARD DELEGATES; To Paddy Coleman, Billy Carroll, John Parker
and Mickie Walsh, who represent us at County Board and East Cork
Board we thank them for their commitment in attending these meetings.
Also, to any member who may have attended or represented the club
through the year, thank you very much.
INTER-COUNTY; Congratulations to Bill Cooper who played Senior
Hurling Championship with Cork this year, the first Youghal player to do
so since 1984. Congratulations also to players who represented the club
on Imokilly Hurling and Football teams and who played at College level.
UNDER-AGE SECTION; To the hard working committee members,
selectors and parents who look after our juvenile members, I would like
to say a big thank you to the juvenile club officers, under the guidance of
Cathaoirleach, Fergal Keenaghan, your trojan work is beginning to reap
its rewards and the club are indebted to all of you for your efforts. Our
juvenile club continues to go from strength to strength and the numerous
titles won, at all grades, during the year is proof of this. The juvenile section
of the club is in good hand and it will not be long before we see the
fruits of their labour breaking into the adult club. Congratulations to all
involved and best wishes for 2012.
LADIES FOOTBALL; 2011 saw the official launch of Youghal Ladies
Football club, under the guidance of Catriona Hill and Cormac Galvin. A
young and vibrant club that will go from strength to strength no doubt and
we wish them all the best for the future.
YOUGHAL CAMOGIE CLUB; This branch of Gaelic Games continues
to expand, due to the dedicated work of their club officers, committee
and mentors. Congratulations are extended to them on their successes
during the year and best wishes for 2012.
SCHOOLS; We would like to thank all the schools in the parish for their
continued promotion of Gaelic Games throughout the year. To the teachers
and principals thanks for allowing our coaches, Siobhán Downing,
assisted by Shane Spillane, Daniel Mulcahy, and Ken Dempsey, the time
to teach the skills of our national games to the young boys and girls. Also
thanks to John Parker, who liaises with all schools and looks after gear
etc., for the matches. Keep up the good work as the benefits are already
there to see and a special thank you to Christy Cooney who donated Club
Jerseys to our local National Schools.
FIRST AID; Thanks to all the various "physio teams" who looked after
our injured players during the year. This year we had some serious
injuries and it is good to see them all on the road to recovery. To Dr.
Michael Twomey, who also gives his time and attention to our players,
when asked to do so, we thank you sincerely.
REFEREES/UMPIRES/LINESMEN/HELPERS; The club currently
has three registered Referees, in Shaun Oliphant, Jim Daly and Christy
Hennessy. A directive, issued from Croke Park earlier this year, outlined
that for insurance purposes and Official Referee must be appointed for all
games, including challenge games. This might have made things difficult,
but we would like to thank all three club referees who willingly gave of
their time, free of charge during the year, when asked to referee challenge
games and it is great to see, what has always been club policy in this
regard still continuing. We would also like to acknowledge their willingness
to referee schools games when requested.
To all who gave of their time in preparing teams, ie. jersey minding,
water, hurleys etc., a big thank you to all. To the many people who provided
refreshments for teams or after training sessions, a míle buíochas
duit.
SOCIAL COMMITTEE; To all those who support and organise our various
social activities, during the year, a big thank you. Special thanks to
the Dinner Dance committee, who recently organised a wonderful night
in the club.
Organising club events, particularly when our main hall is being used is
an onerous task and we would appeal to club members to lend a hand
when requested to do so. Thanks also to all members and friends who support
all these activities.
SCÓR/TG4; Thanks to Liam Ó Laochdha for organising our participation
in the Scór competitions during the year. Also, this year after a lot of
persuading the club was represented on TG4's "Ceist GAA le Hector"
quiz show. Andrew Curtin and Keith McCarthy travelled to Co. Galway
to participate on our behalf.
GOLF CLASSIC; The club thanks Jerry Russell and his hardworking
organising committee for keeping the golf classic going for another year.
Fundraising at the present time is not the easiest and we would like to
thank all who sponsored the prizes, tee boxes, etc., and those who took
par in this valuable club fundraiser.
LOTTO/COUNTY BOARD DRAW/FINANCE PROJECT; A big
thank you to all who are supporting our club Lotto, County Board Draw
and our new Finance Project, all valuable fundraisers for the club.
The club has four dedicated lotto teams who take turns to run the lotto on
Monday nights. We also have some volunteers who give a hand whenever
they can. Thank you all for continuing with the smooth running of the
lotto. Thanks to Shaun Oliphant who distributes and collects lotto books,
from the various people and outlets, throughout the town and surrounding
areas.
We would like to acknowledge and thank all the business in town for
allowing our lotto to be sold on their premises and also those who buy and
sell tickets.
The County Board draw currently has a membership of over 300 and we
thank all who continue to sell and support this draw. Thanks also to
Finbarr Coleman, of our Finance Committee, who co-ordinates this draw
for us.
SPONSORS; The club is indebted to many people and businesses that
sponsored various events in the club during the past year. To anyone who
sponsored in any way we very much appreciate your support
MEMBERSHIP/INSURANCE: Membership registration with Croke
Park is now an annual requirement, for insurance purposes and so that the
Membership Cards can be issued by them. It is important that this is done
early as possible in the year. We have a number of categories of membership
and our club Registrar will be only too pleased to provide details on
request.
CLUB SHOP; The club shop is getting bigger and it is great to see the
children and adults now wearing our club colours around town with pride.
Continued success to Catriona and Áine and thanks for your ongoing
commitment to the shop.
The Congress Bell
The Eucharistic Congress Pilgrimage Bell is originally from the
Dominican Convent in Portsewart. It was used by the community there
and then it was used to usher in the new millennium in Glendalough in the
Jubilee year 2000. The idea of having a bell tour Ireland came from the
history of St. Patrick. Cardinal Brady said the following when the pilgrimage
of the Bell began on the 17th March 2011;
"The Annals of Ulster record a long association between Saint Patrick and
sacred bells. The Annals mention in particular the 'Bell of the Testament'.
This was said to be one of the treasures buried with Saint Patrick. It is said
to have been later willed to Saint Colmcille who gave the Bell to the
Church in Armagh. The tradition of Patrick also has it that he would leave
a small hand bell in every new Church he consecrated as a Bishop.
An example of a lam-chlog of that time can be found today in the National
Museum of Ireland. So, in his work of evangelisation, of bringing the joy
of the Gospel to the Irish people, the bell had an honoured place in the
mission of our National Apostle. It called the people to pray. It invited
them to pause from their busy and distracted lives and to turn to what
gives life to the spirit and the soul. It beckoned people to meet Jesus himself
in his Word and in the Eucharist.
The bell will ring out in memory of Patrick who, in spite of his personal
weakness and the many obstacles that came his way, burned with zeal for
the hope, life and love that the message of Christ offered to the people of
Ireland. The bell will call every one of us to take up that mission from
Patrick and make it our own in living out our baptismal call.
The Congress Bell is not a megaphone shouting for attention above all the
other noise of our lives. It is not even a special ring tone designed to stand
out from the crowd. It is a simple bell that tolls softly. It invites each one
of us quietly to think again about the faith that brought courage, peace
and hope to so many generations of Irish people at home and across the
world. For those who have forgotten or rejected their faith, it is a gentle
call to give faith in Jesus Christ and in His Word another chance."
The Bell is accompanied by four Icons. The Icons reflect the 4 stages of
Mass and they invite us to spend time on reflecting on the Eucharist. The
4 icons are: Our Lady of Refuge and St. John the Evangelist, inviting us
to gather with them at the Eucharist: Christ the Pantocrator invites us to
listen to the Word made Flesh: Elijah and the Raven invite us to reflect on
the gracious gift of Christ in the Eucharist as nourishment for us:
Pentecost invites us to glorify the Lord by living the Gospel.
You are invited to come and ring the Bell and take part in the Liturgies on
St. Stephens day and on Tuesday 27th December; take part in the preparations
for the Eucharistic Congress.
Families are invited to come to the Church to visit the Crib and ring the
Bell in honour and adoration of Jesus, the Word who became flesh.
The Bell will arrive from Cobh on Monday 26th at approx. 12.20 to Our
lady of Lourdes Church
Vibration Massage Therapy Improves
Quality of Life for the Elderly
Is vibration exercise safe for those who suffer from
osteoporosis?
This is a terrific question. Whole-body vibration (WBV) is a new type
of exercise that uses an oscillating platform on which the individual
stands or sits. Manufacturers of these exercise plates claim benefits
ranging from increasing muscle and bone strength to improving balance,
flexibility and circulation. In recent years whole body vibration
has been used in research with the elderly in the prevention of osteoporosis
and bone fractures, and the improvement of the blood circulatory
system with very positive results. Sessions should be no more than
ten minutes and it is advised that a glass of water should be drunk
before each session.
Extract from whole-body vibration training by: Professor Barbra
Resnick PhD, CRNP, FAAN, FAANP - Baltimore.
Kay Smith discovered the benefits of whole-body vibration exercise
after a bone density test at the age of 50 which showed that she had lost
20% of her bone density in just two years. She was prescribed the highest
dosage of Fosamax but wasn't happy to take pills so she looked into
natural means of building bone.
In December 2004, she began using a whole body vibration unit
(vibroplate) three times a week. Eight months later her bone density
has increased in the spine by 3.5%, in the right hip by 2.5% and in the
left hip by 2.2%.
"I was hoping" - says Kay, " to stop any more bone loss, but I actually
built bone while going through the menopause, a time when bone loss
is particularly rapid for women". I also completely avoided the use of
drugs and hormones - Kay Smith.
An article in "Osteoporosis International 2007" reported major increases
in bone formation as a result of whole-body vibration training.
At Leisuretime we offer our whole-body vibration units (vibroplates)
for rental at €80 for six weeks, that includes delivery and a fully
explained demonstration by our very capable staff and we are always
at the end of a phone for any questions or advise needed.
Leisuretime was established over 15 years ago and has vast experience
in whole-body vibration therapy. The feedback from our past and present
customers speak for itself in relation to such ailments as: bone density,
blood circulation, backache, constipation etc., and if you are interested
in purchasing at the end of the rental period, we will deduct the
rental fee off the price of a new unit. Call our team on 021 - 4885444.
Peter Daly, 61 years, Dunmanway.
"Over the years I have been suffering a softening in my bones, I started
using whole-body vibration exercising a year ago and I have to say
my condition has improved greatly. I also feel a lot more flexible and
I'd certainly recommend a vibroplate to anyone who has the same condition
as I have".
Maeve O'Neill, Model Farm Road, Bishopstown.
"Blood circulation was a problem for me, in my feet and hands. I rented
a Leisuretime vibroplate and found by using it first thing in the
morning it really warmed up my whole body. I use it twice a day, in the
morning and in the evening, especially during cold weather.
Professor Barbra Resnick PhD, CRNP, FAAN, FAANP - Baltimore
"Ten minute sessions daily has shown results in enhancing bone
strength, improving blood circulation and muscle growth. Whole body
vibration exercising has been around for some time now and the results
show it is very much here to stay."

Over 100 guests spanning Youghal's business, politics, sport, art and culture
sectors attended the official re-launch of the Walter Raleigh hotel.
Local man-made-GAA President Christy Cooney spearheaded the occasion,
formally declaring the premises open for business on a night in
which optimism and belief refused to be submissive to the town and country's
grim economic circumstances.
The hotel has been functioning under the management of Cork city-based
Atlantic Hospitality Services (AHS) since going into liquidation last
September. Meantime AHS has invested over €30,000 in a non-structural
renovation programme on the 109 year-old premises, it’s sixth acquisition
in Ireland and it’s 14th internationally. Mr Cooney described the refurbishment
as "part of a new beginning" for the town, while invoking the
need for locals and the town's diaspora alike to avail of the hotel's services
in the challenging years ahead. Mayor Eoin Coyne echoed these sentiments
and in conveying his and the town council's best wishes, said the
town council would support the enterprises in whatever way it could.
Colours
Much of the new management's money has been spent on the ground
floor. "We've completely redecorated the multi-purpose function room
and the reception area," says AHS Regional Sales & Marketing Manager,
Joanna Hannick, in deference to the strong emphasis on cream and beige
colouring throughout. The scheme is complimented by appropriate mood
lighting and a new burgundy carpet in the function room, where bright,
beige and pink patterned curtains further appease the eye. "It's classic,
elegant and brings a totally new feel to the hotel," smiles Joanna.
Much of the kitchen's equipment has been replaced while the re-launch
also showcased a modern approach to wedding style, as white chair covers
bedecked with blue (interchangeable) sashes posed beside tables bearing
candelabras and napkin folds in fleur-de-lis style.
Upstairs, the 41 spacious bedrooms, many offering scenic vista of the
Blackwater, have been thoroughly and professionally cleaned, with further
adjustments made to decor.
The re-launch brings impetus to the town's on-going efforts to establish a
core identity as a family-friendly resort rich in leisure, art and heritage
attractions. In terms of local employment, the hotel provides work for
approximately 30 full & part-time staff with, as one would expect,
increased numbers anticipated over peak periods.
Menu
The new management team is led by
Alan Deady from Ballymacoda,
while new head chef James Hallinan
hails from Ladysbridge. James,
arriving from the renowned
Pepperstack bistro, Aghada, brings
an extensive range of delights to the
table, including Sir Walter Steak -
6oz prime Irish Sirloin cooked on a
warm Ciabatta with Red Onion
Marmalade and Hand Cut Fries
(€12) Ardsallagh Goats Cheese
filled with Roasted Red Pepper
(€7.50) and Steaming Mussels,
served with Coconut & Chilli Sauce,
finished with Fresh Herbs (€7.50).
Various pates and desserts of the
homemade genre can be heaped on
top of that indulgence, according to the menu.
Helen Keane and Cliff Winser
Over the coming weeks and months, the hotel will increase it’s efforts to
draw custom from local organisations in a bid to maximise the use and
potential of the refurbished function room facility particularly. If the
admiring glances thrown at the refreshed setting on the re-launch night
are reliable indicators, brisk business should ensue. Interestingly, the
compliments were two-way with Waterford-based Ms Hannick "very
Barabara O'Donovan (Duty Manager) Laura Barron (Receptionist), John
Dunphy Manager TSB Youghal and Joanna Hannick (Sales and Marketing
Manager).
impressed by the beautiful landscape of Youghal and the natural friendliness
of the people."
In business terms the marketing manager observes, "It's very basic to get
hospitality right; a warm welcome, friendly service, good food, clean
atmosphere and a comfortable bed. The Walter Raleigh guarantees this
and more." Sounds like reason enough to stay the weekend.
