Revolutionaries and Reformers
“I’m interested, tell me more”
As an AS level student of ‘Revolutionaries and Reformers’ you will study the turbulent
history of Germany in the Twentieth Century: Nazism, World War and the Berlin Wall, not
to mention three revolutions! Then expand your horizons by blending the familiar with
the less familiar. Reform is followed by Revolution as you study some of the most
Cromwell. Finally, you can *choose for coursework to focus on Spanish reform in the era
of the Armada or the rise, reform and recent attempts to replace the Communist system
established in Russia after the Revolution of 1917.
... or opt for our alternative course, ‘Dictators and Democrats’.
And that’s not all...
The History Department runs residential visits to Spain and Germany, and there are
regular trips to sixth-form lecture conferences in London. There is a thriving student-run
History Society which organises an annual two-day conference and regular screenings
of .
“Teaching and learning are outstanding. Teachers are enthusiastic, knowledgeable and
innovative. Teaching is often inspirational: it captures the attention and sustains high
thought-provoking,” says our latest Ofsted report.
Engaging
More Hills Road students go on to read History at
university than any other subject, not just because it is
well-regarded by universities and employers as a
but also because they discover it to be a fascinating subject
in its own right.
Versatile
History graduates pursue a wide range of careers
including journalism, law, accountancy, management, the
civil service, teaching, research and heritage work.
Challenging
History lessons are interesting and challenging, with
frequent opportunities to weigh up the opinions of
others and discuss your own views. There is dedicated
and wide-ranging support offered to those applying to
study History at university. With extension surgeries,
discussion groups and book groups open to all, History
students at Hills Road are offered regular opportunities to
think, debate and develop.
Varied
Visitors and observers consistently comment on the rich
variety of learning activities offered by the History
Department. There are structured activities and
independent investigations, with a strong emphasis on
discussion and sharing ideas. Extensive use is made of IT as
well as more literary and visual ways of studying the past.
Our teaching is organised yet innovative, designed to
provide both structure and enjoyment in your studies.
Supported
We want all our students to enjoy History and succeed to
their full potential. Our courses are carefully planned to
help you progress from GCSE to AS level. There is an
open and approachable culture in our classrooms and
student input is valued. We also run lunchtime surgeries
on all units where students with difficulties or questions
can work in smaller groups or one-to-one with a teacher.
The small print
All History students are asked to contribute £17 annually to the cost of additional course materials. All other
*Students on Revolutionaries and Reformers can decide during their lower sixth year which of these two
coursework options they wish to study; they will not be asked to express a preference before then. Whilst we
cannot guarantee to meet every student’s choice, we expect to be able to do so for students who have been
following a ‘standard’ curriculum (i.e. four AS levels in the lower sixth), and are certain we shall be able to do so
for all students who wish to study Russia.
