ASME Code inspection services
Lloyd’s Register, through its subsidiary LR Insurance Inc., provides Authorised
Inspection Agency services to manufacturers of boilers, pressure vessels and nuclear
power plant components. There is a worldwide demand for ASME Code compliance,
particularly in the oil and gas, power, petrochemical and pharmaceutical industries. A
requirement of the ASME Code is that inspections must be performed by qualified
authorised inspectors employed by an ASME Authorised Inspection Agency.
Authorised Inspection Agency (AIA)
Within the UK, LR Insurance Inc. serves as
an AIA to over 35 manufacturer’s holding a
variety of ASME Certificates of
Authorisation. This service is provided by a
team of authorised inspectors, inspector
supervisors, nuclear inspectors, nuclear inservice
inspectors and nuclear inspector
supervisors.
Worldwide, LR Insurance Inc. qualified
personnel operate in more than 30
countries.
Service delivery
For a manufacturer to begin the process of
gaining ASME authorisation, they must first
appoint an AIA such as LR Insurance Inc.,
and this is achieved by signing a Letter of
Agreement.
An authorised inspector (AI) who will be
responsible for performing the Code
required inspections will be allocated to the
manufacturer. Also, an authorised
inspector supervisor (AIS) will work closely
with the manufacturer and the AI to
develop the manufacturer’s quality control
(QC) manual to prepare for the ASME Joint
Review.
Manufacturers in the nuclear industry must
also demonstrate their compliance with the
ASME defined quality assurance (QA)
requirements. This service will be provided
by authorised nuclear personnel.
The purposes of the ASME Joint Review,
the team for which will be led by an ASME
designee, is to carry out an audit on the
written QC Manual and its implementation.
This implementation can be on either an
item to be Code stamped or on a mock-up
demonstration item. In its role as the AIA,
LR Insurance, Inc. will also form part of the
review team. On satisfactory completion of
the joint review, the review team will
recommend to ASME that the requested
certificates should be issued.
Following the award of the ASME
Certificate of Authorisation, the AI will be
responsible for monitoring the
manufacturer’s quality program,
performing the required Code inspections,
and attending further ASME renewal
reviews.

Verification and witnessing of construction
activities will be carried out by the AI in
accordance with the Code. Such activities
will include stage inspections during
fabrication, final internal and external
inspection, witnessing of pressure testing,
the application of the Code symbol stamp,
and the signing of the Manufacturer’s Data
Report upon satisfactory completion
Applications
Typical items of equipment which may be
subject to inspection to ASME Code
requirements include:
• oil fired boilers
• gas fired boilers
• pressure vessels
• heat exchangers
• nuclear reactors
• steam generators
• pressurisers
• transport tanks.
Inspection of items to be code stamped will
be carried out at those locations authorised
by ASME.

follows:
• Section 1 – Power Boilers
• Section III Division 1 – Rules for
construction of nuclear facility
components
• Section III Division III – Containment
systems for storage and transport
packaging of spent nuclear fuel and
high level radioactive materials and
waste
• Section IV – Heating Boilers
• Section VIII Division 1 – Pressure Vessels
• Section VIII Division 2 – Alternative Rules
• Section VIII Division 3 – Alternative rules
for construction of high pressure vessels
• Section X – Fiber reinforced plastic
pressure vessels
• Section XI – Rules for In-service
Inspection of nuclear power plant
• Section XII – Rules for construction and
continued service of transport tanks
