JARVIS COLLEGIATE 53 "FROM THE ARMY" ~Ir. l\Iuir has kindly passed on to The Magnet a letter which he received from our old friend, Frank Dowe. Here it is in part. Corunna Barracks, Aldershot Command, Saturday, Jan. 20, 1940. Dear 1\11'. 1\1uir:- Just a few lines to let you know at Jarvis how T am doing. We are in Aldershot in Corunna Barracks. These barracks were built for the soldiers on their return from Corunna battlefields. They are old but very comfortable. We lay in Halifax Basin four days before we left. We left on Friday afternoon at twelve noon the Friday before Xmas. T think we were out twelve hours and I got sick and that is the last time I was an able seaman. We had seven troop-ships in the convoythe Revenge of the R.N. and the Dunkil'k of the French Navy. We also had the entire Canadian Kavy with us-six destroyers. They were with us three and a half days, then they turned back. Two days later we met fourteen destroyers of the British -orth Atlantic Reet and they kept running around us in circles. The buglers of the regiment, six of us, were continually on duty, and so between that and sea sickness you can imagine what a trip I had. How is everything at Jarvis? I used to think when T was a pupil there how boring it was, but let me tell you the days you spend at school are the best days of your life. T do not regret joining the army, as I fully realized what T was going into, but I would like to see home once for just a day. This country is so different. The manners, customs and speech of the people here are quite a change from Toronto. Please tell Mr. Brokenshire the old Forty-eighth is carrying on as usual. Give my regards to all the staff. You can show them this letter, although it isn't a letter that I would write if T were in 1\1r. Booth's room or Mr. ?lcKerracher's, but I write what T like here and put it in my own way and that's that. I hope you will answer this little letter, and I wish you a Happy New Year. WaIter 1S serving in the Merchant Marine and this letter came from France. Le Havre, France, Jan. 10, 1940. Dear Eel, This letter is probably a surprise to you but even though I am some three thousand miles away I would still like to know what is happening at Jarvis. My ship is rather a slow old barge, most of our voyages will be long, so I will write to you of the ports I visit if for no other reason than fming up time. The weather in France is raither warm now but it has been cold and I am not sorry that we are sailing for South America soon. There were enemy planes over Le Havre the night before we arrived and an air raid alarm on our first night in port but T was asleep and didn't hear about it till morning. It's a far cry from the hallowed halls of Jarvis to the deck of a dirty old tanker, already overdue at the junk heap. Yours sincerely, WALTER HISCOX
