ACADEMICS AND ALL-AMERICA SELECTIONS Missouri S&T is proud of its academic reputation as one of the top institutions for science and technology. The results are also shown in the consistently strong performance of the student-athletes on the S&T campus. During the 2008-09 academic year, a total of 204 student-athletes at S&T finished with a 3.0 or better grade point average. Forty studentathletics also finished the school year with a 4.0 GPA. The university also has a high number of selections to the academic teams in the past year that were released by the Great Lakes Valley Conference, Great Lakes Football Conference and New South Intercollegiate Swimming Conference. A total of 101 S&T student-athletes were selected to the GLVC’s All- Academic team for the 2008-09 school year, the sixth-best total in the 14-team conference. Jordan Henry, an All-America performer for the men’s track and field team, was named as the winner of the 2009 GLVC Paragon Award as the conference’s top student-athlete. In the past year, two S&T student-athletes earned ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America honors. A total of 12 individuals were named to their selected Academic All-District teams during the 2008-09 season. S&T has had 21 Academic All-America selections over the past five seasons for a total of 31 since 2000, the fourth-best total in NCAA Division II. MISSOURI S&T ALL-AMERICA SELECTIONS Curtis Gibson (1984-85) Gibson was selected as a third-team All- American by the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) following a season in which he averaged 18.7 points per game. He was a three-time all-district and all-conference selection, and finished his playing career as the all-time leading scorer at Missouri S&T with 1,534 points. That total is currently third on the school’s all-time scoring list. He was inducted into the university’s Athletic Hall of Fame in 2002. Duane Huddleston (1987-88) One of the greatest outside shooters in MIAA history, Huddleston earned third-team All-America honors from the NABC after scoring 24.2 points per game. He made 52 percent of his threepoint attempts and finished his career with a mark of 51 percent from behind the arc (both MIAA records). His ten straight treys made against Truman State in 1988 set the Division II record. His 1,475 points rank sixth on the Miners’s all-time scoring list. Huddleston, who died in 1995, was inducted into the university’s Athletic Hall of Fame in 2006. Bill Jolly (1992-93) Jolly was a third-team All-America selection by the NABC and Division II Bulletin after winning the MIAA scoring title with an average of 22.4 points per game. He was also an honorable mention All-American in 1992. Jolly is the all-time scoring leader at Missouri S&T with 1,920 points and holds school records for three-pointers and free throws made. Jolly won first-team All-MIAA honors twice and was also a two-time all-district selection. His point total ranks fifth on the MIAA’s all-time scoring list. Michael McClain (1995-96) McClain was named to Division II Bulletin’s All-America team as an honorable mention selection after leading the Miners to the 1996 MIAA championship and a berth in the NCAA Division II Tournament. McClain, who later served as an assistant coach in the Miner program, was also named as the MIAA’s most valuable player for the season and led the conference in assists with a school record of 231. He came to Missouri S&T after playing two years at the University of Washington and later served on the Miner coaching staff. MINER BASKETBALL 7
