SimMan Provides Training for MECC Nursing,
Paramedic & Respiratory Therapy Programs
SimMan is a full-sized, computer-controlled human patient simulator.
The manikin offers instructors the ability to provide simulation

making skills during realistic patient care scenarios.
SimMan is extremely lifelike. He talks, breathes, coughs, moans,
and makes gastric sounds. He comes with a patented airway

management situations. Students can practice chest tube insertion
with SimMan, as well as take his pulse and blood pressure. He has
a pre-programmed library of heart, lung, bowel, and vocal sounds
with an adjustable sound volume. In fact, there are over 2500
cardiac rhythm variants which allow students to perform cardiac

In addition, SimMan has an intravenous (IV) training arm, which
allows peripheral IV therapy. Each manikin has adaptive equipment
for a male or a female anatomy, and replicates many physiological
functions to help students learn both basic and advanced
practice skills for patient care. Instructors can operate his system,
as well as a simulated patient monitor, by a personal computer and/
or by hand-held remote controls to program real clinical scenarios
for students.
“We are extremely pleased to have such a sophisticated piece of
equipment in our lab and we are looking forward to using it to
enhance student learning,” stated Johanne Watson, Associate Professor
of Nursing and Assistant Program Director for the Virginia

product produced by Laerdal Texas, a collaboration of the Nordic
company Laerdal and the Texas-based company Medical Plastics
Laboratories. The manikin is funded by a grant from the United
States Department of Health and Human Services.
Cover Story
Evan Gilliam
Computer Networking student Evan Gilliam knows both the
advantages and challenges of distance education courses. The
Gate City native took Intro to Internet Services, Preparing for
College Writing, and College Composition all online.
He also took a video-based Sociology course.
Gilliam was even able to complete 16
credit hours of full-credit classes before
graduating high school at the Scott
County Career and Technical Center.
Of his distance education coursework,
Gilliam says, “I like the ones (courses) I
have had because I saved money and gas.
The teachers were all very cooperative.”
He does admit that taking distance
education courses is no walk in the park.
“They were not easier than on-campus
courses.
They
were a
little bit
harder.
It took
a couple
more
hours a
week.”
While
a student
at MECC, Gilliam
has also served as a part-time

Computing and Information
Technology Department. After
graduating this spring, he plans

Microsoft and Cisco programs,
and seek a full-time position in his
Doni Riley
Doni Riley went to Tidewater Community College after high school

later, she is pursuing an Associate Degree in the Paramedic Program
at MECC. “I wanted to prove to myself that I could do it (go back
to college) at 44,” she states. “I want to

a role model for my son.”
Distance Education courses at
MECC have helped Riley maintain her
busy schedule with a full-time position
as an emergency medical technician
with Friendship Ambulance Service.
She completed College Composition
and Technical Writing online, and
took video-based courses in Biology,
Psychology, and Sociology.
Through the
Tri-College
Paramedic
Program,
Riley
also
takes
courses
via
two-way video
and audio transmitted
from Southwest Virginia
and Virginia Highlands
Community Colleges, as well
as MECC.
Riley, who will graduate
this spring, believes that hard
work makes you feel young.
“I love it and really enjoy it,”
she states of her experience at
MECC.
Over 150 distance education courses are now available at MECC
Time and convenience have always been draws for distance education courses. Now, with the increase of gas prices, reducing the
cost
