New and Improved LIT Program
by Ellen and Emilia
This year at Camp Frank A Day we have a new LIT (Leader in
Training) program run by Zac Broomfield with the assistance of
Ashley Traphagen and Mikey Barbone. This program is designed to
prepare young adults for future leadership roles as a counselor and in
life. The program consists of various exercises and classes supporting all
areas of camp such as maintenance, the infirmary, programs, and cabin
life. During session 1 and 2, LITs do not live in their assigned cabin but
spend each day involved in the daily activities of campers. The LIT experiences
many different sides of camp on a daily basis. First period
they have an hour long “LIT class”. They learn the qualities of a leader
and how to handle difficult scenarios with campers. The LITs also assist
in teaching a “camptivity,” such as archery, arts and crafts, or drama. In
between, they will be in their unit (midgets or juniors) managing activities
with their campers. Additionally, LITs are responsible for setting and
clearing the dining hall. By doing this, the LITs gain a sense of responsibility
and accomplishment. Although seemingly insignificant, the dining
hall cleanup shows the LITs that there is no “magic” in camp and that every
little duty must be performed by someone. This program has proved
itself very successful and we have received excellent feedback from the
LITs. We are very excited to see how this program shapes these young
adults and prepares them to become true leaders.
There are still a few open spaces for Session 3 and Adventure Camp Week!
During session one, campers had the pleasure
of spending a day at Lake Compounce,
an amusement and water park. Campers
were escorted by counselors to various
rides and games throughout the day. During
the trip, campers tried new things at
the park that they may not have previously
experienced. With the encouragement of
the counselors, the campers allowed themselves
to come out of their comfort zone
and try new things. Specifically, there was
a group of campers all with a fear of heights.
They stuck together throughout the day going
on various small and slow rides. Towards
the end of the day, the campers went past
a ride that modeled a ski lift. It lasted 30
minutes and stretched 729 feet in the air
with a breathtaking view at the top. They
jumped in line to go on the ride. For the first
5 minutes they sat glued to their seats unable
to talk or move. As the ride continued,
they opened their eyes and looked out into
the horizon. Once again, they were unable
to talk or move, but this time, it was for a
different reason. They were taken aback
by the scenic view, and their unbelievable
achievement. After deciding to go on the
ride for a second time, they were laughing,
singing, and enjoying each others’ company.
This just goes to show that with a little camp
magic anything is possible.
