Political instability in the past, the
continuous economic crises, as well as
the weather catastrophe “El Niño”
forced about 3 million Ecuadorians to
migrate to other countries such as
Spain, USA, and Italy. On the other hand,
instability in neighboring countries of
Colombia and Peru (and political
agreements with countries, such as
Cuba) has caused much immigration
into Ecuador.
Foreigners are generally welcomed and
respected by the population. Ecuadorians
are curious to get to know the “gringos”
(general name for foreigners).
