We believe that a healthy nonprofit sector has enormous power to impact society. We know this power is real, we see it in
action everyday. Through dedication to volunteerism, nonprofit organizations foster individual aspirations, and create a vivid
sense of community. Through commitment to justice and equality, nonprofits nurture democratic institutions everywhere.
Nonprofits are the architects of change and the builders of the future. By strengthening organizational effectiveness,
CompassPoint helps nonprofits create change, transform people, neighborhoods, and contribute to healthy, vibrant
communities.
At the same time, we recognize that there are many new challenges facing nonprofits in what is an increasingly
complex social and economic environment. Across much of the sector, there is a growing crisis in leadership. As a longlaboring
generation of dedicated leaders begins to move out of the sector, a new generation brings their own idealism and
skepticism along with their expectations of a career in the nonprofit world.
Today's nonprofits are also struggling to maintain a clear identity in an environment where the lines between the
government, business, and nonprofit sectors are becoming blurred over increased competition and new partnerships. As the
sector comes of age in economic clout and influence, the inevitable loss of innocence among socially valuable organizations
should not lead to a loss of confidence and legitimacy in our communities. In meeting the mission of social change in the next
decade, nonprofits must meet higher expectations of accountability, both to respond to skepticism and to compete successfully.
And with rapid advances in the dot.com world, 'dot.orgs' must also pay attention to how to advance their own work through good
use of technology, and increase access for their communities to technology.
These challenges in the sector as a whole, along with many changes in our own organization, have made 1999 a most
interesting year for all of us. We ended 1999 by marking our 25th year of service to the community, and began the year 2000
with a new name: CompassPoint Nonprofit Services. Since completing the 1998 merger between the Support Center for
Nonprofit Management in San Francisco, and the Nonprofit Development Center in San Jose, we have greatly increased the
types of services we offer and had the privilege of sharing our experience with a far broader cross section of the nonprofit
sector, as well as with our partners in government and philanthropy.
Today, with a staff of 33, a regional consulting group of 25, and more than 100 volunteer faculty, we are coming into our
own as an organization with the skills and resources to offer quality technical assistance locally, while contributing to nonprofit
sector development nationally. With this annual report, we hope to share with you some insights into the values and qualities
that define who we are as an organization, along with some highlights from what has been an altogether fun and rewarding
year.
Changes on our board and staff
At the beginning of 1999, Joe Valentine assumed the Chairmanship of our Board of Directors, complemented by Rosana
Madrigal (KARA/KLIV/KRTY) as Vice Chair, Steve Piuma (Hood & Strong) as Treasurer, and Tom Siino (Accountants For
Contract) as Secretary. Joe's experience as President of the United Way of Bay Area, as well as his 1999 consulting work with
United Way Silicon Valley, helped raise CompassPoint's sights to new standards and led us to investigate new fields. Former
Board Co-Chair (and former Chair of the Nonprofit Development Center) Katherine Webb Calhoon reached her term limits and
we were very sad to see her leave the board. As the year drew to a close, we welcomed the first new board members since our
1998 merger: Jeff Mori, Alison Marks, and Bill Tucker.
On staff, at the end of the year, we were sorry to lose our long-time Development Director, Tim Wu, to a White House
Fellowship, and our Publishing Director, Richard Fowler, to the "dot com" world. Staff Consultant Steve Lew stepped into the
Development Director position, and we welcomed new staff, including Michael Stein (from Children Now) as Manager of our
Internet Presence and Kristen Godard (from the W. Alton Jones Foundation) as Silicon Valley Training Director.
Special thanks
Each year we take this opportunity to thank some individuals who don't fit into any of the above categories, but whose "over-thecall-of-duty"
assistance and advice helped make our work stronger through their generosity of spirit. These individuals worked
with us as collaborative partners, as program officers, as consultants to our organization, as participants in our celebrations, as
our sharpest critics, and as our friends.
