Celebration Activities for the 50 th Anniversary 1961-2011 Section II describes the beginning and development of ISM, Section III describes the role and development of the four surveying divisions and Section III also showcases the achievements of ISM. Preparation of the book took more than a year. The Opening Remark was given by the Organising Chairwoman PP Assoc. Prof. Sr Dr Hjh Wan Maimun Wan Abdullah whilst the Welcome Address was given by the ISM President Sr Elvin Fernandez. The ISM Wiki was also officially launched on that auspicious day. After the launching of the book and the ISM Wiki, Rating Agency Malaysia group chief economist, Dr Yeah Kim Leng presented a talk on “Malaysia’s Transforming Socio-economic Landscape” which highlighted the key trends, drivers and forces of socio-economic change from within and outside the country. • 8
The Professional Journal of The Institution of Surveyors, Malaysia MALAYSIA BUILDING SURVEYING ACADEMIC CARNIVAL 2010 (MABSAC) Ajlaa Anis Department of Building Surveying UiTM Perak ISM News The Malaysia Building Surveying Academic Carnival 2010 (MABSAC) was held at Dewan Baru Seri Iskandar, Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) Perak on 30 September 2010. The programme was organised by UiTM Perak and UiTM Shah Alam with the support of the Institution of Surveyors Malaysia (ISM), Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), University of Malaya (UM) and Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM). In addition to the four universities, the other agencies involved in the programme were the International University College of Twintech Technology (IUCTT), various Local Authority and Jabatan Kerja Raya (JKR) Malaysia. Secondary schools students and those of other educational institutions were also involved in the first session of the programme. The aim of the MABSAC Carnival was to bring together the community of building surveyors from the universities, professional bodies and other agencies in Malaysia. The main focus was on current issues related to the “Sustainable Built Environment in Malaysia”. The Carnival was also to highlight the contributions of the profession of building surveyors in construction industries. Among the various benefits offered by the programme were career information on Building Surveying, and the current issues and industrial needs. The theme of the programme was “Expanding Building Surveying Practices towards Sustainable Built Environment”, which was aimed at enabling new Building Surveyors to be more competent, competitive and globally adaptive. The programme was also a foundation for professional networking for building surveyors in Malaysia. The Carnival began with registration at 8.00am followed by the Opening Ceremony beginning with a Welcoming Speech by Sr Nuzaihan Aras Agus Salim, the Programme Director, in the presence of the Guest of Honour Prof. Madya Dr Ismail Samsuddin, Timbalan Pengarah Kampus Penyelidikan & Jaringan Industri UiTM Perak and all participants. Subsequently, Prof. Madya Dr Ismail Samsuddin delivered his speech to officially launch the Carnival programme. After the Opening Ceremony, a montage slide presentation was shown to the audience. The presentation showed the typical learning environment and university life for students of diploma and degree programmes in Building Surveying in Malaysia. The presentation also provided information on qualifications and application requirements for diploma and degree studies in Building Surveying. The montage aimed to heighten awareness of the audience on the scope, responsibility and work opportunities as Building Surveyors. 9
