Pr<strong>of</strong>essors William Cook, Ellis Johnson, and George Nemhauser were selected as inaugural Fellows <strong>of</strong> the Society for <strong>Industrial</strong> and Applied<br />
Mathematics (SIAM).<br />
Pr<strong>of</strong>essors John Bartholdi III and<br />
Steve Hackman revised Warehouse &<br />
Distribution Science, a text used in programs<br />
across the United States and throughout<br />
thirty-two countries worldwide.<br />
William Cook, Chandler Family Pr<strong>of</strong>essor,<br />
became founding editor-in-chief <strong>of</strong> the<br />
journal Mathematical Programming<br />
Computation. Cook also published Research<br />
Trends in Combinatorial Optimization.<br />
Pr<strong>of</strong>essors William Cook, Ellis<br />
Johnson, and George Nemhauser<br />
were selected as inaugural Fellows <strong>of</strong><br />
the Society for <strong>Industrial</strong> and Applied<br />
Mathematics (SIAM). Fewer than 200<br />
individuals internationally received this<br />
honor.<br />
Jim Dai, Edenfield Pr<strong>of</strong>essor, was awarded<br />
the James Riady Distinguished Visiting<br />
Pr<strong>of</strong>essorship to teach at the National<br />
University <strong>of</strong> Singapore from April <strong>2009</strong><br />
to May 2011. He brings an extensive<br />
background in stochastic systems to their<br />
Department <strong>of</strong> Decision Sciences.<br />
Santanu Dey joined the <strong>Stewart</strong> <strong>School</strong><br />
as an assistant pr<strong>of</strong>essor in July. Since<br />
obtaining his PhD in industrial engineering<br />
at Purdue University in 2007, Dey has<br />
worked as a research fellow at the Center<br />
for Operations Research and Econometrics<br />
(CORE) in Belgium.<br />
Antonius Dieker, assistant pr<strong>of</strong>essor,<br />
received the Gijs de Leve Prize for the best<br />
Dutch PhD dissertation written between<br />
2006 and 2008 in the field <strong>of</strong> operations<br />
research. His thesis, “Extremes and Fluid<br />
Queues,” focuses on the connection between<br />
fluid queues and extreme values in random<br />
processes.<br />
Paul Griffin, co-director <strong>of</strong> SCL’s Center<br />
for Health Care Logistics, accepted an<br />
<strong>of</strong>fer to become the new department head<br />
<strong>of</strong> industrial engineering at Penn State<br />
University after twenty years at the <strong>Stewart</strong><br />
<strong>School</strong>. Penn State’s IE department is the<br />
oldest in the world and is ranked among the<br />
top five in the nation by U.S. News & World<br />
Report.<br />
Pr<strong>of</strong>essors Paul Griffin and Pinar<br />
Keskinocak received the IIE Transactions<br />
Best Paper Award in Scheduling and<br />
Logistics for “Coordination <strong>of</strong> Marketing<br />
and Production for Price and Leadtime<br />
Decisions,” coauthored with PhD student<br />
Pelin Pekgun.<br />
Michael Massimino, adjunct assistant<br />
pr<strong>of</strong>essor, completed two spacewalks aboard<br />
the STS-125 mission to service the Hubble<br />
Space Telescope in May. Massimino taught<br />
in the <strong>Stewart</strong> <strong>School</strong> between 1995 and<br />
1996 until he was selected by NASA as an<br />
astronaut candidate.<br />
Leon McGinnis, Gwaltney Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong><br />
Manufacturing <strong>Systems</strong>, received a courtesy<br />
appointment in the Woodruff <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />
Mechanical Engineering. McGinnis has<br />
collaborated with ME faculty for several<br />
years, and this appointment will enable him<br />
to supervise ME students directly.<br />
Yajun Mei, assistant pr<strong>of</strong>essor, received<br />
the <strong>2009</strong> Abraham Wald Prize for “Is Average<br />
Run Length to False Alarm Always an<br />
Informative Criterion?” The award is given<br />
annually to honor the best publication in the<br />
journal Sequential Analysis.<br />
Arkadi Nemirovski, John Hunter Chair,<br />
received an honorary Doctor <strong>of</strong> Mathematics<br />
degree from the University <strong>of</strong> Waterloo in<br />
Ontario, Canada.<br />
William Rouse, director <strong>of</strong> the<br />
Tennenbaum Institute, published a<br />
second edition <strong>of</strong> his Handbook <strong>of</strong> <strong>Systems</strong><br />
