Nick Wellkamp, undergraduate senior, was<br />
named a Truman Scholar.<br />
Ali Ekici, PhD student, won the <strong>2009</strong><br />
Society for Health <strong>Systems</strong> Graduate<br />
Student Paper Competition with “Modeling<br />
Influenza Pandemic, Intervention Strategies,<br />
and Food Distribution.” The paper, coauthored<br />
with Associate Pr<strong>of</strong>essors Pinar<br />
Keskinocak and Julie Swann, evaluates the<br />
effectiveness <strong>of</strong> intervention strategies such<br />
as quarantine and school closure against a<br />
potential pandemic.<br />
Jessica Heier, PhD student, received the<br />
Gilbreth Memorial Fellowship for the 2008-<br />
<strong>2009</strong> academic year. This award was granted<br />
by the Institute <strong>of</strong> <strong>Industrial</strong> Engineers<br />
for Heier’s dedication to scholastic<br />
achievements and humanitarian efforts.<br />
Oran Kitterthreeapronchai, PhD<br />
student, received the Best Student<br />
Paper Award at the first International<br />
Transportation and Logistics Conference<br />
for “Geometric Relationships <strong>of</strong> a Single-<br />
Hub Crossdocking Network.” He defended<br />
his PhD thesis in April and now joins the<br />
National University <strong>of</strong> Singapore as a<br />
research engineer.<br />
Guanghui Lan, PhD student, was<br />
awarded the 2008 INFORMS Computing<br />
Society Student Paper Prize for “Efficient<br />
Methods for Stochastic Composite<br />
Optimization.”<br />
Micajah McGarity, undergraduate<br />
senior, was awarded the Fulbright<br />
Scholarship to Poland for the <strong>2009</strong>-2010<br />
academic year. McGarity will use the ninemonth<br />
grant to study at Krakow University <strong>of</strong><br />
Technology, working on a project to improve<br />
the city’s sewer system.<br />
Melike Meterelliyoz, PhD student, won<br />
the Pritsker Doctoral Dissertation Award<br />
and received the first-place cash prize <strong>of</strong><br />
$1,000. She was advised by Pr<strong>of</strong>essor David<br />
Goldsman and Associate Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Christos<br />
Alexopoulos, both <strong>of</strong> whom specialize in the<br />
field <strong>of</strong> simulation.<br />
Eden Smith, undergraduate senior, was<br />
elected to represent the student body as Ms.<br />
Georgia Tech for the 2008-<strong>2009</strong> academic<br />
year.<br />
Alina Staskevicius, undergraduate<br />
junior, was elected student government<br />
president for the <strong>2009</strong>-2010 academic year in<br />
a run-<strong>of</strong>f election in April. Staskevicius was<br />
vice president <strong>of</strong> administrative affairs for<br />
2008-<strong>2009</strong>.<br />
Juan Pablo Vielma, PhD student, was<br />
awarded the <strong>2009</strong> Goldstine Postdoctoral<br />
Fellowship in Mathematical Sciences. He<br />
will conduct research in the IBM Watson<br />
Research Center in New York before taking<br />
up an appointment as an assistant pr<strong>of</strong>essor<br />
at the University <strong>of</strong> Pittsburgh.<br />
Charles Wang, undergraduate junior,<br />
was highlighted in The Atlanta Journal-<br />
Constitution in May as one <strong>of</strong> three Atlantaarea<br />
college students finding creative ways<br />
to be successful in a tough job market. Wang<br />
spent the last year developing routes for UPS<br />
drivers on the newly-named streets in Dubai.<br />
Nick Wellkamp, undergraduate senior,<br />
was named a Truman Scholar and will<br />
receive a $30,000 grant for graduate<br />
study. Wellkamp, who served as student<br />
government president for the past year, is<br />
the first Georgia Tech student in six years to<br />
receive the national honor.<br />
