of dogs and cats in the world! 

The CFA and AKC have joined forces once again this year to create a truly unique experience 

for every pet lover. We encourage you to “meet” all 160 dog breeds and 41 cat breeds, each 

presented in fun, interactive booths decorated to reflect their heritage, characteristics and 

unique attributes as a family pet. 

Throughout the weekend you’ll have the opportunity to interact with knowledgeable breeders 

from the AKC parent clubs and CFA breed councils of the dog and cat worlds, resulting in the 

most comprehensive, unique and exciting live dog and cat experience under one roof! Our

BINGO GAME FOR KIDS: Find all the cats listed on your card, get your card stamped at each breedappropriate 

booth, and drop it in the BINGO box. Completed cards will be eligible for a prize drawing every 

hour throughout the weekend. 

THE KITTY CAT-TURE / FELINE FASHION SHOW: See some of your favorite cats dressed to kill in 

fabulous creations from Meow-Wear. Whether dressed for an evening gala or decked out in the latest sportswear, 

our cats know what it takes to be fashion forward—20 custom completed outfits. 2 p.m. on Saturday. 

CAT IDOL: The judges will have their say, but it is the viewing public that determines who will become New 

York's favorite feline. Don't miss finding out who is crowned this year's Cat Idol, the winner will be revealed 

during a live presentation in the stage area at 3 p.m. on Sunday. 

FELINE AGILITY: Don’t miss this exciting exhibition. Last year, Whoopi Goldberg 

came to Meet the Breeds to see cats race against the clock. Whoopi herself even 

ran a cat through the obstacle course consisting of stairs, hoops, and tunnels. 

WATCH THE 5 FASTEST CATS RACE for the gold on Sunday in a winner-take-all 

time trial. May the fastest cat win. 

Kids can learn to teach cats to run the obstacle course the way Whoopi did, from the 

expert. Feline Agility Master Jill Archibald will randomly select children from the 

audience throughout the weekend for hands-on instruction in agility training, 

earning a merit badge along the way.

What Kind of DOG 

Is Right 

for Me? 

Deciding what kind of dog to get is as 

important as deciding whether to 

get a dog in the first place. The AKC 

recognizes over 160 different breeds of 

dog, and each of these breeds has its 

own unique temperament, appearance, 

activity level, and set of needs. 

You should do some serious and careful research 

to determine which breed of dog is right 

for you and your family. And you can start here 

at Meet the Breeds! This event is the perfect 

place to spend the day interacting with breed 

experts who can answer all of your questions 

about finding the right dog for your lifestyle. 

Here some factors to consider: 

Temperament 

You’re going to be living with this dog for a long 

time, so you need to make sure he has a personality 

you can live with. Do you want a dog that is active, 

or subdued? A dog that is easily trained, or 

strong-willed? A dog that is friendly to everyone 

he meets, or one that is loyal to family but aloof toward 

strangers? A dog that needs a lot of attention 

from family members, and lots of activity to 

prevent him from becoming bored and destructive, 

or a dog that is content to be left alone for periods 

of time during 

the day? 

Size 

All little puppies 

are adorable, of 

course, but they 

grow quickly— 

and some of 

them grow a lot. 

Find out how 

large—in height 

and weight—that 

cute puppy will become before you bring him 

home. Remember that larger dogs require more 

food and space—is your yard or living room big 

enough to meet his needs? And keep in mind 

that some little dogs still need lots of room to 

run around and burn off energy. 

Coat/Grooming Needs 

All dogs need to be groomed regularly to stay 

healthy and clean; most dogs will shed. But 

some dogs shed profusely all year round; some 

shed in clumps for a few weeks; some dogs 

shed only a little bit. Long-coated dogs are 

beautiful to look at, but require a lot of effort to

stay that way. Short-coated dogs are 

easier to care for, but may still shed, and 

may require protection in cold or wet 

weather. Dogs with fancy trims may need 

professional grooming. Decide how much 

dog hair you’re willing to put up with, and 

how much time and energy you can afford, 

when you’re deciding which breed 

is right for you. 

Male or Female? 

In general, there is no significant difference 

in temperament between 

male and female dogs. If you are getting 

a dog for a pet, you will want to 

have your dog spayed or neutered, 

which will eliminate most minor differences 

anyway. If you plan to show or 

breed your dog, you must be vigilant about preventing 

unwanted breedings by keeping your 

intact male safely confined to your house or yard, 

and by keeping your intact female away from 

other dogs when she comes into heat twice 

yearly. 

Puppy or Adult? 

The advantage of getting a puppy—aside from its 

irresistible cuteness—is that you can raise it yourself 

from the beginning, and participate in its 

training and socialization every step of the way. 

The disadvantage is that training a puppy requires 

a great deal of time and patience. Busy 

families should keep in mind that puppies cannot 

be left alone for more than a few hours at a time. 

They need plenty of trips outside, frequent meals, 

and lots of interaction with people. Adult dogs— 

whether purchased directly from a breeder or 

adopted from a rescue group—can be ideal for 

people who want a dog with fewer needs. Mature 

dogs tend to be calmer; some are already housetrained 

and know basic obedience. 

Health 

Some breeds may be prone to hereditary diseases 

or conditions. Many breeds can be screened for 

certain conditions, such as hip or eye problems; 

this certification should be available to you when 

you go to look at a puppy. Being educated about 

the health considerations of your chosen 

breed can help you to avoid or 

alleviate future problems. 

Other Ways to Search 

The American Kennel Club offers an 

online Breeder Classifieds Service, 

sponsored by K9 Advantix, enabling 

puppy buyers to locate breeders in 

their area who have puppies for sale. 

We recommend starting your search for 

a puppy with the Parent Club breeder 

referral contact. Online Breeder 

Classifieds is a supplemental service. 

When looking for a puppy, you 

should visit the home of the breeder 

to see the whelping facilities, the litter, 

the dam, and possibly the sire. 

And We Love Mixed-Breeds Too! 

Mixed-breed dog owners can now enroll their 

dog in the AKC Canine Partners program. Mixedbreed 

dogs and their owners will be able to participate 

in agility, rally, and obedience 

competitions held by AKC-affiliated dog clubs 

nationwide and access many AKC programs and 

services including lifetime enrollment in AKC 

Companion Animal Recovery (AKC CAR). For full

Finding 

the Purrfect 

Pedigreed Kitten 

Over the last 4,000 

years, cats have 

shared our hearths 

and homes, our food and 

beds. Historically, their job 

was rodent control and 

they were rarely regarded 

as companions or pets. 

In the late 1800s, people 

became interested in the various 

traits and colors of the cats that 

they saw. They began to record 

pedigrees and regulate the 

breeding of cats. 

As a result, here we are today, with a wealth of 

“pedigreed” cats. Many breeds are the result 

of the crossbreeding of known breeds to 

create another, such as the Ocicat. 

Decisions, Decisions 

You will need to decide if a pedigreed cat is 

right for you. Do you want a kitten or an adult 

cat? Kittens are cute, playful, and fun, fun, fun. 

But they require care and monitoring as they 

grow, they are full of energy and 

mischievousness, and they 

make mistakes— like 

getting up on the 

dining room 

table during 

your dinner party 

or climbing up 

your pants leg to get 

your attention. A 

kitten will require a 

fair amount of 

attention and 

training. On the 

other hand, an 

adult cat has already been 

through all of that—at 

someone else’s house. 

Altered males and females 

make equally good pets in 

the long run. Most pet 

owners find that there is very 

little difference in 

personality and that neither 

gender is more affectionate 

or playful than the other. 

Do you want a 

longhaired cat or a 

shorthaired one? 

Longhaired cats are lovely 

but require daily combing or 

brushing, so you must promise yourself to 

commit to daily grooming. All cats shed, but 

longhaired cats shed a longer hair that 

accumulates more apparently than a 

shorthaired cat’s. 

Which characteristics are you most 

interested in? Pedigreed cats have a wealth 

of the characteristics that you may have a 

special desire for. If you like a curly-coated 

cat, then the Cornish Rex or Devon Rex may 

be what you want. If you think a cat with 

curled-back ears fits your tastes, take a 

look at the American Curl. 

Whatever you may be interested 

in, there is most likely a breed of 

pedigreed cat that will catch 

your fancy.

want or are willing to put up 

with? 

There is a vast range of 

personality, and each breed 

is unique in personality.

How much are you willing to 

spend? Purebred kittens and 

cats are often expensive. They 

are uncommon and comprise 

approximately 3–5 percent of 

the cat population on this 

continent. The cost of a 

pedigreed kitten relies on a 

number of things, such 

as availability, 

uniqueness, and the 

quality of the kitten. 

Where to Get Your 

Purebred Kitten 

There are a variety of 

places to go to acquire your 

pedigreed kitten or cat. 

The classified ads in your local newspaper are 

one place to look. Make certain that you are 

acquiring a clean, healthy, well-socialized 

animal. Steer away from kittens that are younger 

than 8 weeks of age—they need a little more 

time to properly socialize. 

Purebred kittens can also be acquired at a pet 

store, although few reputable breeders will sell 

their kittens through this channel. Sometimes 

pet-store kittens are obtained from “kitten 

mills” where breeding practices may be less 

than optimum. Insist on reviewing the 

management’s written policy regarding any 

health guarantees. 

Pedigreed or purebred breeders are the ideal 

people from whom to obtain your purebred 

kitten or cat. A good place to meet breeders is 

at a cat show.You can also find a listing of 

breeders in magazines such as Cat Fancy. 

Going to a cat show offers the chance to see a 

large number of breeds at one time and to get a 

lot of questions answered. Seek out more than 

one breeder and ask questions related to how 

their cats are bred and raised. Be prepared for 

the breeder to ask you questions about things 

like your home environment, your attitude about 

declawing and keeping kitty indoors, and about 

other cats you may have had. 

At shows licensed by the Cat Fanciers’ 

Association, kittens available for placement will 

be at least 4 months old. If you want a younger 

kitten, you will need to visit the breeder’s home. 

Recently, a number of purebred rescue groups 

have formed as pedigreed breeders work to 

keep unwanted purebred cats out of shelters. 

Many of these cats are older neuters and spays 

that have been abandoned or relinquished 

because of a change in someone’s life. 

Questions to Ask the Breeder Before 

Purchasing a Purebred Kitten 

Be assertive when selecting your kitten or cat, 

no matter where you are acquiring him.You 

should be able to obtain answers to the 

following questions: 

1. How was the kitten raised? In a cage or 

under foot? 

2. Health guarantee: How long is the 

guarantee and what is covered? 

3. What if things don’t work out? What is the 

return policy? 

4. What is the personality of this specific 

kitten? 

5. Vaccinations: What was given, and when? 

When is the next shot due? 

6. Health history: Has the litter been healthy, 

are all the individual kittens healthy, and is 

the mother healthy? 

7. Feline leukemia testing: Have both parents 

been tested and are they negative? 

8. Was a stool sample tested and what were 

the results? 

9. What is the feeding schedule, what 

food is the kitten or cat 

used to, and what kind 

of litter is the kitten or 

cat used to? 

10. Has the kitten been 

trained to a scratching post?
