Redwing Thomas’ Surprise Birthday from Immersion Class
The participants in the adult Dakota Language
Immersion class that meets every
Tuesday through Thursday in the afternoons
decided to surprise their instructor
Redwing Thomas with a birthday cake and
sing Happy Birthday for his 32 nd birthday
on August 10th. Redwing’s birthday was
August 10 th but the class wanted to share
his birthday with him on the 8 th of August.
He was totally surprised.
The class wanted to show their appreciation
for his hard work, patience and great skills
teaching them the Dakota Language.
The chocolate cake was made by student
Cynthia Johanson. The cake had his Dakota
name on it and read: “Happy Birthday
Hupahu Duta (Redwing).”

Outdoor Drum Group
Redwing Thomas, Dakota Language Instructor,
held drumming/singing practice for the youth in
the Dakota Culture Club outdoors, just south of
the Grace Moore Senior Center. The youth enjoy
this as one of many activities planned to help the
youth to learn their culture and language. -Editor
