Dominick’s Restructuring of Paramedic
Services Improving the Quality of Emergency
Care for Cicero Residents
As part of Town President
Dominick’s restructuring of the
paramedic service in May 2008
which brought with it new EMS
equipment and enhanced training
for paramedics, Cicero residents
are receiving better quality health
care and lives are being saved.
For example, the ability to obtain
and transmit 12 lead EKG’s has
enabled local hospitals to alert
their cardiac teams to be standing by
for patients who are actively having
a heart attack prior to their arrival at
the hospital. The ability of paramedics
to notice and report potentially lethal
heart blockages means patients
get the needed treatment from
cardiologists in minutes rather than
hours.
From the President’s Desk
by Cicero Town President Larry Dominick
Dear Cicero residents,
October is going to be a big
month for Cicero.
On October 8, we will be officially
opening the new municipal
complex—the new Town Hall
and the new Police Station. Look
for important details regarding
the announcement celebration
in next month’s Town News as
well as in advertisements and
other communications we use
to get the word out to all Cicero
families.
October will also be a big month
because we have the Houby
Day Parade put together by the
Cicero Chamber of Commerce.
And October will be a big month
because of my high hopes for
the Chicago Cubs in the playoffs.
+++
On August 29, we officially
opened the Cicero Community
Park, a beautiful, 11-acre, familyfriendly
park on Laramie between
34th & 35th. Look for pictures
from the opening weekend
celebration in next month’s Town
News.
The Cicero Community Park is
part of the Sportsman’s Park
redevelopment, the first phase of
it, in fact.
As we did with the new municipal
complex where we built a
park at 1808 S. Laramie and,
of course, the new community
center, it was important to me
that redeveloping Sportsman’s
included community green space
for our children and our seniors to
enjoy during the warm weather
months.
I think you’ll agree that the park
is a great space for outdoor
activities, for our various ethnic
festivals, for family movie nights,
and activities of those sorts.
Dominick Meets with Puerto Rican Official
Lourdes Ramos-Rivera is the
Majority Whip of the Puerto Rican
House of Representatives and the
Chair of the Ethics Committee.
Ramos-Rivera met with Town
President Larry Dominick during a
recent visit to the United States.
I am very thankful for the support
of all the Cicero residents who
believed in me and believed in
our collective vision for the “New
Cicero”. We get closer to realizing
that dream every day. The Cicero
Community Park is another
important step in that direction.
+++
Finally, I want to recognize all of
our town employees this month.
From clean-up weekend to the
construction of new parks to new
constituent service programs to
preparing to move into our stateof-the-art
community center, I have
raised the level of expectations for
town employees’ performance.
I have done so because Cicero
taxpayers deserve a town
government that is always seeking
to improve the quality of its service.
I have seen a lot of people
really step up and show their
commitment to Cicero and to
Cicero residents. It has been very
encouraging.
Many thanks to you and your
families.
Sincerely,
Larry Dominick
Cicero Town President
P.S. As always, please feel free
Dominick sponsors successful “National Night Out” at Morton College
Cicero Town President Larry Dominick and the Cicero Town Board of Trustees
sponsored a greatly successful “National Night Out” outdoor picnic on Tuesday,
August 5th, at Morton College in Cicero. This free event featured a barbecue,
music, raffles clowns, children’s entertainment and much, much more.
The National Night Out is a community-wide crime and drug prevention
event held to promote neighborhood spirit and police partnerships for crime
prevention in effort to bring about a safer community. The National Night Out
campaign involves citizens, law enforcement agencies, civic groups, businesses,
neighborhood organizations and local officials from over 10,000 communities
from all 50 states. Over 34 million people participated in this event in their
communities nation-wide.
National Night Out is designed to:
• Heighten crime and drug prevention awareness
• Generate support for local anti-crime programs
• Strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships
• Send a message to criminals letting them know our Cicero neighborhoods are organized and fighting back together with
our police, town officials, community members, residents and their families.
New Indoor Soccer Field Under Consideration by Town
At the August 26 Town Board meeting, Andy Schcolnik (pictured) from ANSCO
Real Estate Investments presented plans for a joint venture between his company
and Vida Abundante Church to redevelop eight acres of property owned by Mr.
Schcolnik across from Unity Jr. High on south 54th street.
The joint venture at 2100 S. 54th Street (between the Morton 201 Freshman Center
and the Morton 201 Alternative School) calls for a two-acre indoor soccer field
(which would provide four (4) adjacent indoor soccer fields), the requisite parking,
and a multi-phase development of a new church for the parishioners of Vida
Abundante, who’ve outgrown their current location at 13th & Austin.
The project would be privately financed. Mr. Schcolnik made clear he seeks no
financial assistance from the town.
The facility would be family-friendly, no alcohol will be served.
In response to questions from Town board members, Mr. Schcolnik said that
during the warm weather months when children are likely to be more interested
in playing soccer outside, he would be open to working with Clyde Park District to
accommodate some of their summer soccer league teams. Schcolnik also said he
is considering adding batting cages and other athletic features during down times
for indoor soccer.
“I am all for developments aimed at giving Cicero kids more space and more places
to enjoy athletics,” said Cicero Town President Larry Dominick. “It’s an exciting project that could compliment our new parks at
1808 S. Laramie and 35th & Laramie very well. We’re hopeful that it moves forward with all due speed.”
The church development would proceed in phases, according to Mr. Schcolnik. Vida Abundante has a vibrant youth ministry
headed up by Ismael Vargas, a key leader for the anti-gang Operation Ceasefire-Cicero program as well.
continued from page 1
Dominick’s Restructuring of Paramedic Services Improving
the Quality of Emergency Care for Cicero Residents
are now using Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) devices for patients with potentially life-threatening
respiratory diseases.
Prior to the use of the CPAP devices, patients would have to be intubated (have a tube put down their throat) in
some instances. Patients who are intubated need to be hospitalized in intensive care for days after the procedure.
With successful CPAP usage and other treatments, patient hospital stays are shorter.
On the training side, Cicero paramedics are doing monthly Spanish language training in order to try to
communicate better with any Cicero resident in need. Further, they have scheduled ongoing training in life-saving
procedures and life-saving equipment so that the paramedics who serve Cicero residents stay current with medical
advances.
Dominick Unveils Historic Marker at Site of the
former Cicero Flying Field
Town News
On August 20th, Cicero Town President Larry Dominick unveiled a historic
marker at the site of the former Cicero Flying Field. The Cicero Flying Field,
which spanned from Laramie Avenue to Cicero Avenue and from 16th
Street to 21st Place, was dubbed “the most complete flying field in the
world” during its time of operation from 1910 to 1915.
The inscription on the marker reads:
“One of the first, largest urban airfields in the Midwest. The Cicero Flying
Field was used for air shows, mail service, business trips and recreation
flights. Rising property values caused the field to be closed and subdivided
for residential and commercial development. It became the Parkholme Neighborhood.”
Cicero Police Secure Approval to Charge Juvenile as Adult in Shooting
Thanks to the diligence of Cicero police investigators, a 16-year-old juvenile male will be
charged as an adult for allegedly shooting two individuals on the 1900 block of South 51st
Avenue on Tuesday night (August 19) in what police believe was a gang-related incident.
The offender has been charged with the following felonies:
• Aggravated Battery with a Firearm, 2 counts
• Aggravated Battery in a Public Way, 2 counts
The two victims survived the shooting. One was shot in the leg and has been treated and
released. The other victim, a juvenile, was shot in the back and remains hospitalized in
stable condition.
“Incidents like this remind us of two things,” said Cicero Town President Larry Dominick. “First, we have top quality Cicero
detectives who do a great job putting together the cases that bring gang-bangers like this juvenile to justice. Second, despite
a relatively quiet summer and the significant decrease in gang-related violence we have achieved in Cicero, the challenge to
combat street gangs is an ever-present one that requires our continued vigilance.”
WAGGIN’ TAILS
Spring is here! It’s
that time of year that
our kids and pets are
outside playing. We
love to see our kids
having fun with
their pets but we
also want to make sure they are all safe!
First, I would like to introduce you to “Yuppie
Puppy Peggy” (pictured).
What a wonderful month at Cicero
Waggin’ Tails Shelter!
Please remember when children take their dogs out
for a walk that sometimes the dog is the one walking
the child! This has become a big problem. Kids
are walking larger dogs that pull away from them,
and then the dog either gets lost or ends up running
off and biting someone or someone’s pet.
Peggy, a professional pet groomer at Yuppie
Puppy Salon in Oak Park, contacted me
offering to donate her personal time by
grooming all the animals at our shelter that
are available for adoption, wanting them to
look their best when they go to their new
home with their new family. Of course, I
thought what an amazing, wonderful lady
she is!
I have seen little ones fall when their dog pulls
them, or when the dog gets loose the child gets so
upset they run after the dog and they don’t pay
attention to anything else around them. They run
after their dog into the street, between cars and in
alleys.
Then she amazed me even more! She
volunteered to come in every 1st and
3rd Sunday of the month, to provide her
professional grooming services to our town’s
furry family members—that’s right, a full
service grooming session—at a discounted
price for Cicero residents.
The puppy pictured in the
photo below with Peggy came
to our shelter matted to the
skin. I didn’t think there would
be any hope but to shave the
poor thing down to the skin,
but look at the miracle Peggy
preformed on this little girl!
We need to supervise our kids when they are walking
our family pet! ALWAYS keep your dog on a
leash and please make sure that you carry a bag to
pick up after your pet to avoid any violations and
fines! We have also had a problem with residents
bringing their pets to our parks to walk them. There
are signs posted. “No Dogs Allowed”
DOGS ARE NOT ALLOWED IN THE PARKS!
We have had many situations of dogs attacking people
and other dogs in the parks and also the problem
of owners not picking up after their pets when in the
park.
That’s not all. Peggy volunteered to donate the proceeds of her discounted
grooming services back to our town’s Waggin’ Tails Shelter!!
Peggy is donating her limited personal time out of love for all animals,
wanting to make sure they are comfortable and to look their best when
families come in to view them. They now have bows and bandanas and
smell of fragranced shampoo and cologne.
Like our other shelter volunteers and our thousands of Cicero pet owners,
Peggy wants to see animals placed in loving homes and she’s contributing
greatly to ensuring this happens. Peggy is not only an amazing groomer,
she is an amazing person. Thank you, Peggy.
If you have the misfortune of losing your pet and
you have contacted us to assist you in finding your
The price for a bath or groom begins at $25.00, but Peggy will consult with
you regarding any special needs your pet may have.
pet, PLEASE call us to let us know if your pet has
been found! We document each pet that is lost in
our “Lost Pet” log book. We would like to be notified
so we can mark the pet as being found!
As for our Animal Welfare Shelter, we have already
relocated to the new facility and we are in the
process of setting the shelter up for adoptions.
We are hoping to begin adopting out animals to
good homes by the end of May!
In closing. I would like to say “you are always in
our hearts” to a wonderful, loving and loyal pet and
a friend that I loved very much. Cricket Dominick
passed away on March 17, 2006. She will be loved,
missed by her family and friends, and in our hearts
forever.
(www.TheTownofCicero.com, Click the “Animal Welfare” Link). Our shelter
is now also posted on www.Petfinder.com.
I am pleased to tell all of you that the last two weekends we have adopted
approximately 95% of the animals that were in need of the wonderful
homes that they now have! Be sure to check both websites often since they
are updated weekly sometimes bi-weekly!
