President’s Message 


Greetings fellow Bimmer and Beemer enthusiasts. I hope you are all into enjoying the 

summer months and are getting your fair share of quality drive time under sunny skies. We 

are well and truly into the peak of our events season, and I hope I’ve seem many of you at 

our various club activities. 

I thought I would take the opportunity of this Ausblick edition to do a bit of a “meet the 

Directors” resume. Some of this information is of course available on the website, but this 

bit is not, and I hope you find it of interest as a bit of background on what everyone does 

“in their other life”, so here you go;

As you can see, quite a diverse group of individuals in so far as their professional lives 

are concerned, but my point being, that all share an enthusiasm for the marque that brings 

them together in the club to foster and share that enthusiasm with other club members. 

Now here’s the sales hook! These folks all lead busy lives, as do we all, but they give 

generously of their time on a volunteer basis to make the club what it is, arguably one of 

the best car clubs in Canada, and certainly the best BMW chapter under the Club Canada 

umbrella (my biased opinion). Newsletters, website, events, and all other club activities 

don’t just happen, they take time, effort and planning by a host of individuals. So; again the 

sales pitch, we are always looking for volunteer help at events, ideas for new events, or any 

suggestions that will better help the club serve it’s members needs. To this end it is not too 

long before the nominating committee will be looking to put together a slate of volunteers 

for office at this years AGM so if you would like to put your name forward, or are strong 

armed by a member of the Executive to step up to the plate, please give it some serious 

thought, new ideas and new blood are what keeps organizations alive and thriving. 

Elsewhere in the news letter you will find the calendar of events for the remainder of the 

summer. Some great activities planned! It looks like the Duffey Drive this year will set a 

record, with some 30 vehicles and 54 people signed up. Dave Beddows has put together what 

promises to be the usual superb drive, with a “down home” farm BBQ for the Saturday 

night. Check out the choices of events, and we look forward to meeting many of you 

through the summer.

Duffey Lake Road Tour 

Sat - Sun July 12-13, 2003 

Date: Saturday & Sunday July 12-13th, 

2003 

Event Type: 2 day tour of the coast 

mountains 

Event Cost: There is no club fee for this 

event, but it involves several meals 

on the road and an overnight stay in 

Merritt. 

Registration: Pre registration mandatory. 

Use the Karelo system or RSVP 

by email or phone. You will also need 

to make a hotel reservation for our 

overnight stop in Merrit. 

Details: This is the 6th time we will 

make the 2 day trek through the 

scenic twisty roads of the coast 

mountian range by using the Duffey 

Lake Road. About 850 km of driving 

over 2 days for those that enjoy 

mountain roads and great scenery. At 

press time there are already about 27 

cars on the trip list, and we have 

filled the hotel in Merritt. Last 

minute add ons may be possible, but

Renton WA 

Event Cost: The Seattle Club has various 

fees for attending the event based on 

registration date. 

Early registration fees are $20 car for 

display or $30 to be judged 

After July 18 fees are $30 to display, 

$40 to be judged. 

They will accept valid BMW Car Club of 

BC members at par. 

Registration: The Seattle club would 

like you to pre register if you wish to 

be in the judged category. 

Details: This is their 23rd annual event. 

The featured car this year is the 6 

series. More details and registration 

forms are available on the Seattle 

clubs web site:

registration cut off is July 18th. We’ll 

organize a caravan for BC members 

wishing to go. 

Boeing Plant Tour 

Monday August 4, 2003 

Date: Monday August 4, 2003 (BC Day 

Holiday) 

Meeting Location: Custer Rest stop on 

I-5 Southbound 

Registration: Registration is mandatory.

Event Cost: There is no cost for the 

actual plant tour, however we usually 

plan a group lunch stop on the return 

portion of the event, and may also 

take the ferry to Whidbey Island from 

Everett. 

Details: This is a private tour of the 

Boeing plant in Everett organized by 

Jim Westmacott. There are restrictions 

imposed by Boeing that may 

apply to children (minimum height of 

127cm) as well as clothing and 

footwear restrictions. Security is also 

an issue, and Boeing may require 

proof of citizenship of participants.

Skid Pad & Slalom Day 

Sun August 17, 2003 

Date: Sunday August 17th, 2003 

Event Location: Boundary Bay Driving 

Center, South end of 80th Street 

Ladner. 

Event Time: 8:30 am to approx 4:00 pm 

Event Cost: Event Fee for the entire day 

is $190. Mandatory pre registration 

and payment. 

Registration: Register and pay for this 

event using our karelo registration 

system. You can also confirm a spot 

by email to schools@bmwccbc.org or 

by phone to Rolf at 604-671-5843, 

however payment will be required 

prior to registration cut off which is 

August 8th. 

Details: This is a Car Control School 

that focuses on building various 

skills by combining two element. We 

will have a water truck and will offer 

a wet skid pad morning session in 

addition to normal regular exercises 

and slalom practice session for the 

afternoon. Limited to 24 cars for the 

skid pad, and 30 cars for the slalom. 

(Yes, you can sign up for only half of 

the day.) Register early.

It is a controlled list, and we work 

hard to keep it up to date, clean and SPAM 

free. We do not rent out or otherwise

Maintaining Contact 

If a picture is indeed worth a thousand 

words then this issue of Ausblick contains 

some 92,000 words. 

Since our club is event based, it seems 

quite appropriate to use a fair amount of 

photo coverage of our events. Thanks to 

club photographer Thomas Fink and 

several other members who contribute 

photos, we always have a good collection 

of images to help us describe our events. 

Indeed, there are times I don’t think a 

thousand words would tell near as good a 

story about some of our events as a few 

good photos. And of course, it doesn’t end 

just here in the newsletter. Now with our 

new archives section on our web site, we 

have even more coverage of past events in 

image format. To get to the web based 

event photos, simply click on the Event 

Archives link from the menu on the left of 

our home page at www.bmwccbc.org. 

(There are currently over 722 images in 6 

albums, grouped by year, of past events, 

and there will be more to come as we 

update and add some images from past 

years.)

As we enter the summer season of 

events, we hope the images of the events 

so far will stir many of our members, both 

new and old to consider attending some of 

the upcoming events. 

As you can see from the pictures in 

this issue, members enjoy the events we do 

host, and most of them (aside from Driver 

Training and some Tours) are relatively 

inexpensive ways to get out with your 

bimmer and family to meet other BMW 

enthusiasts and have a fun day. 

We are now officially in our 6th year, 

something that back in 1998 seemed to be 

a long way in the future. For the new 

members in the group, you need to know 

that we are the second largest (and still 

growing) club in the BMW Club of 

Canada. 

Back in May of 1998 when we hosted 

our first Harrison Fun Run as the 

founding event of our club, we ended up 

with 27 people who joined the club. Today 

we have over 368 members, and new 

membership card numbers now are 

reading in the 700 series, where as the 


first member number assigned was 101. 

(The founding members are numbered 

0001 to 0006, and the remainder of the 

numbers to 100 are reserved for admin 

use, other clubs and dealers as well as 

honorary membership numbers.) 

In addition to the membership 

growth, we have also hosted many events 

over the years. 165 so far, and still more to 

come. 

For those that appreciate statistics, we 

have by our informal records had 2759 

cars attend events with 3640 people since 

we started back in 1998. That’s a lot of 

BMWs and people attending events for a 

club our size, and I take it as a good sign 

that members enjoy attending events and 

meeting fellow BMW enthusiasts. 

Well, that’s about it. I hope to see you 

at an event soon. Oh, almost forgot. For 

those that would rather see the newsletter 

full of text instead of all the pictures, it’s 

simple, just attend an event and write up 

a short review of it. About a thousand 

words or so should do.

For whatever reason, we have had 

consistently good turnouts for our simple 

Fahrt Ins Blaue Day drives, especially the 

spring and fall sessions, and this years’ 

spring Fahrt ins Blaue was no exceptions.

had some 42 BMWs and 71 people. It is a 

good thing that our lunch destination was 

to be the Mission Springs Brewing 

Company Restaurant, as they managed to 

our destination at Mission Springs

posed a bit of a challenge, since we had

I’m sure the movie folks also wondered 

what 42 BMWs were doing in the middle 

of nowhere.

planned on taking the Albion Ferry to get 

to the north side of the Fraser. However all 

went well, and despite two instructions for 

turns where we forgot to mention that the 

road signs were missing, no one got 

seriously lost or track for too long. It 

always pays to check what it says in the 

instructions, as there were distance 

indicators for the turns as well. In the end 

all worked out well, and it gave folks 

something to talk about at lunch. 

Despite having run the route the day 

before we missed the absence of the road 

signs, and were also surprised by all the

Nixon Tech Session 

On April 30, 2003 the folks at Nixon 

Automotive held an informative tech 

session for our members. 

As usual, in addition to the tech 

session it was a great opportunity for 

members to meet and chat about all 

things BMW. 

The folks at Nixon’s surprised us with 

a nice snack table, and a raffle for some 

prizes, and as a bonus, the money from 

the raffle was donated to the Children’s 

Hospital on behalf of the club.

Kevin, and of course Wray.

6th Annual Harrison Fun Run 

Sunday May 25th, 2003 

Our 6th Annual Harrison Fun Run in 

celebration of the founding of our club 

was a great success. Some 51 BMWs and a 

few non BMWs came along for the drive, 

and for the first time it stayed dry for the 

entire drive. 

Luckily the Clayburn rest stop was 

empty when we got there, as we filled it 

with all the cars we had. 

Some 85 members and their partners 

and family members were at the lunch in 

Harrison. Many thanks to all who 

attended and made this such a successful 

event. 

Just as in ‘98 Thomas was the first one there 

...but soon others arrived

April 6 Driving School

Our driver training program has been a 

strong feature in our club. The aim is to 

provide safe controlled instructor guided 

sessions in which a member or any car 

enthusiast can improve their driving skills. 

We started our program planning shortly after 

founding the club in 1998, and by April of

1999 we hosted our first Collision Avoidance 

safety school. 

We now have five years of schools behind 

us, with the April 2003 session marking our 

official 5th anniversary of driver training 

programs. We have had some 416 students 

attend our courses in that time. 


Over the years we have also upgraded the 

program by adding more skill levels and 

courses including track based courses. 

If you haven’t been to a session yet, what are 

you waiting for? The next one is our August 

17th Skid Control & Slalom Course. Visit our

CityTV was on hand during the event to 

document the fact the club was celebrating 

5 years of offering our Driver Training 

Program. As a result we got a nice spot 

on the evening news.

Elaine Yong: 

Is there a better way to drive a car? Well, the BMW Car Club thinks so, 

this is their 5th year hosting a driver education course. Organizers 

believe the roads would be safer if more drivers had a crash course in 

collision avoidance. 

Tony Riddle: 

We teach people to be safer and better drivers on the street, showing 

them that there’s a better way to stop a car, to handle a car and teach 

them how to avoid incidents that could occur in front of them on the 

road.

a safe environment. It’s an opportunity to get more comfortable with 

your car and situations that hopefully you won’t encounter on the 

street but inevitably some of us do, so it’s a great chance to be safe.

May 25, 2003 6th Annual Harrison Fun Run 

We get a lot of fine cars that attend 

our events, as evidence by this great 

showing of 8’s at the recent Harrison Fun 

Run. 

Derek, Dave, Gary, Tom and Sherry all 

drove their 8’s to the event. Word has is 

that these folks will all also head to 

Northern California in September for the 

Left Coast 8 Fest, which promises to be 

one of the largest gatherings of 8 series 

cars ever. If you’ve got an 8 you should 

consider joining them. 

...and, while the rest of us were on the Harrison Fun Run, a group of die hard ‘02 enthusiasts were at the Vintage Races at Mission to support Ron 

Dempsey in his newly acquired ‘02 race car. AKA the Pig in it’s past life. 

Where’s Ron? How’d the pig do? 

I’ve been meaning to provide an 

update, but it’s been a crazy week since I 

got back. All went well - mostly. 

The pig arrived last Friday at Annacis 

Island, and was (of course) the last off the 

train. Hustled it down to North Bend to 

Brain Capp’s shop to empty it out (it had 

a spare block, 4 wheels and boxes of junk 

filling every spare inch) and do a once 

over. Checked out well. 

Because vintage racers frown at 

modern advertising, we had some heatgun 

work to do and some clean up before 

qualifying and racing 

Saturday and Sunday. 

I got a special 

exemption to run tii 

injection. 

First practice 

session out, I was 

surprised how good it 

felt. This car is set up 

well. Predictable, wellbalanced, 

smooth 

power band, and the 

Hoosiers stuck well 

once they were 

warmed up. There were 140 cars in the 

field (a record) and that meant 40 in 

my run group of small-bore sedans. 

Mostly Porsche 356’s, 912’s, Alfa GTV’s, 

MGB’s, A-H Sprites and this year - 4 

2002’s! 

I qualified pretty well in 24th, and 

got my lap time down from 1:58 to 1:53 

from practice. That beat the other ‘02’s, 

but we were all within 1.5 seconds and 6 

grid spots. Then I had a spaz moment. 

As we were on pre-grid ready to do our 

formation lap, I couldn’t get one of my 

belts to lock. Heart pounding a mile a 

minute. Cars starting to leave. Sweat 

forming on my brow. Can’t get the cam to 

lock. Finally, after all the cars had left me 

and were halfway through their formation 

lap, I got the belt done and took off. That 

meant that my 24th position was now 

40th with a half mile deficit to fill. I 

managed to catch the pack and get it back 

to 28th before the checkered flag fell. 

Dumbkopf. 

Next day, morning practice: brakes 

started to feel soft. Had 2 hours to flush 

the brake fluid and replace whatever was 

there with Motul. Lots of air, so I guess I 

boiled the fluid playing catchup the day 

before. I start the next race in 28th (based 

on the previous race position), and get to 

the grid 25 minutes ahead of time with 

my belts done up, helmet strapped up - I 

am not going to run out of time again. A 

car in the previous race dumps a bunch of 

oil all over turns 6 and 7. Wait another 15 

minutes for the race to begin. Sun comes 

out. Inner-suit temperature somewhere 

around a billion Kelvin by now. 

Race begins, this time with me in the 

middle of the pack. Highlight of the 

weekend as we have a close pack of 10 

sedans fighting through corners 1, 2, 3 

and b. I emerge unscathed, might have

gained a few positions. Car starts to 

feel better and better through first 

4 laps as I pull a gap behind me, 

and start to catch an Alfa Duetto. 

(Very pretty boat-tail roadster). I’m 

4 seconds behind him when I have 

a great run down the front 

straight, likely hitting max speed 

of about 115mph. Going into turn 

2, a high speed left hander, I get 

on the brakes and a HUGE puff of 

smoke comes out the rear. Turn 

the wheel for turn-in and - 

nothing. No bite, as my brakes 

didn’t work and I haven’t scrubbed 

off enough speed. I take the offroad 

route into the gravel, and get 

some control back before the tire 

wall. My day is done, even though 

I get it back on the track. Brake 

pedal goes to the floor. 

In the pits, we get the rear 

drums off and they’re wet. We had 

a bad seal on one of the wheel 

cylinders go. No spares could be 

found, and I missed the third and 

final race. Still, it was a fabulous 

weekend. The atmosphere was 

great, other drivers were very 

friendly and supportive, and the 

car exceeded my expectations. 

Now I can’t wait to be out at 

Mission on May 24/25. The field 

will be smaller, and I might be the 

only ’02. Hope some guys can 

make it out - I’ve learned I could 

use the help and maybe the right part...

Grill Badge Samples have arrived

It has been just over a year since we 

started the grill badge project and found 

the German company Carl Poellath Münz 

und Prägewerk Schrobenhausen GmbH & 

Co. KG that makes possibly the best grill 

badges in the world. At least for German 

cars like our BMWs. (They have been in 

business since 1780.) 

In the time since first contact, we’ve 

exchanged plenty of emails, faxes phone 

calls and yes we even managed a tour of 

their factory thanks to Thomas being in 

the right place at the right time on a trip 

to Germany. 

Progress to date is that we paid for the 

die costs and got initial samples made. 

The news is the samples are terrific. 

The grill badges are high quality 

precision die stamped, nickel plated, and 

then the colors are applied and the finish 

is baked, for a high quality baked enamel 

end product that will stand up to years of 

use on your car. 

We have in hand 3 proof samples 

(done in epoxy instead of baked enamel) 

so you can get an idea of what the 

finished product will look and feel like. 

Truly a high quality piece that you 

can proudly mount on your car or use to 

mount on a plaque in your den or what 

have you. Every member should buy one. 

Here are the order details you need to 

know: 

We need to order 100 pieces. The price 

is ¤ 29 (Euros) so depending on the 

exchange when we pay the bill, that 

should equate to about $45 CDN. The 

final price won’t be known until we are 

finished with importing them. 

We have orders for 33 units in hand so 

far. Thomas and Rolf will gladly take your 

order for one or more units, and we will 

set up an order and deposit option using 

our Karelo system. 

Be sure to ask to see the samples at an 

event, and we are sure you’ll want to order 

a grill badge for yourself. (Restricted to 

members only.) 

Actual size of the grill badge is 61 mm wide 

by 76 mm tall. They are 3 mm thick. This is 

no flimsy tin badge. Nickel plated with baked 

enamel finish is what we have chosen. They 

come with two attachment holes. 


Playground Zones 

Now that this school year is almost a 

memory, drivers will soon be able to forget 

about school zone signs until fall. When 

school is out, children are much more 

likely to be found travelling to and from 

the playground. Playground zones are in 

effect the whole year through and must 

not be forgotten. 

A driver must always exercise caution 

when encountering children on the 

highway. This rule applies to all highways 

and not just those that pass through 

marked playground zones. 

When a playground for children is 

present and indicated by signs displaying 

30 kmh or the numerals 30 a driver is 

required to slow to this speed every day 

between dawn and dusk. The end of the 

zone is at the back of the sign on the other 

side of the highway, just like a school 

zone. 

The penalty for speeding in a 

playgound zone starts at $173. If the speed 

is more than 50 km/h, the penalty rises to 

$230. Drivers travelling faster than 70 

km/h face excessive speeding charges that 

start at $345. In all cases, three penalty 

points will also result from a conviction.
