Presidents Report - And now
for something a little different!
Normally I try to save this spot to write
around events or happenings in our
Club. For this issue, however, I am
going to write about a recent
experience I had with a non-BMW
Club event. This event was not entirely
non-BMW. In fact it was primarily
sponsored by BMW Seattle. The event
was the Annual BMW Seattle Classic
Motorcar Rally.
This rally is a TSD (Time, Speed,
Distance) rally; something I had heard
of but never competed in. This
particular event attracted participants
from as far away as Belgium. The
entry fee of $500US ($400US for
Canadian entrants) ensures that the
people in this rally are serious about
TSD events. The prize Bragging'
Rights! The proceeds of the event go
to charity. The event was held over 4
days and included 8 meals with champagne
on the 1st night. When one takes
into account the time and effort to
create this event and all the costs
outside volunteered time, it is realized
that the entry fee for this event is quite
reasonable.
One of our members, Sultan, asked me
to help restore a 1959 BMW 507 to be
ready for this event last year. Due to
unfortunate circumstances the car is
still under restoration which is a story
for another day. I digress! Wanting to
be involved in an event that promised
an atmosphere of vintage machines and
old time rally grandeur, I volunteered
my services as a support vehicle to the
rally. Within a half hour of volunteering
an Email was sent out to all the
rally participants thanking our club and
myself for providing a support vehicle.
Within an hour of that I had a call from
Sultan, "I thought you were going to be
my navigator" Not realizing his
regular navigator wasn't participating
and that I was second choice, I had just
put myself in two places at the same
time.
"Of course I'll be navigator!", not
wanting to miss out on this privilege. I
knew I would find someone willing to
drive the support vehicle. Calling on
club members and other friends, I was
fortunate to find Guljit to drive support
on the Friday and Steve to drive on the
Saturday. Thank you, Gentlemen.
The Preparation:
Not having the 507, the next car of
choice was a 1937 BMW 327/28.
After some routine maintenance the
trip meter was added allowing us to
calculate our distance to 1/100th of a
mile. We were ready; or so we
thought.
The rally start was Monroe Wa. Before
we crossed the border our trip meter
stopped working. Not long after that
the car was running short on engine
power. After a quick stop we tightened
some loose spark plug wires, convinced
ourselves that the engine was running
much better and continued to Monroe.
The Cars:
Wow! Talk about nice machinery. To
name a few there were vintage Jag's,
Aston Martin's, Alfa's, Vette's,
Porsche’s, Benz's, Austin's, Triumph's,
Ferraris', Bimmer's and a really nice
example of a rusty Suburban (The
support vehicle). Of the BMW's a very
rare '68 Glas, 2 1937 327's, a 1953 503,
a '78 B7 Alpina and a couple of nice E9
Coupes.
The First Day:
Never navigated before, huh Dave! "I
wouldn't turn at this light, it is too
close. Turn at the next."..... When we
regained navigational consciousness; I
had us nearly 25 minutes off course.
Even the chase vehicle was 10 minutes
ahead. "Forget the checkpoints, let's
try to make the beginning of stage 2.
There is a 10 minute break before
stages. If we go quick we can do it."
Those of you who know Sultan are also
aware of his ability to pilot vintage
cars. vintage cars with such standard
equipment as skinny tyres, drum
brakes, no power steering and "hang on
'cuz there ain't no seatbelts mate!"
seating. Always check to make sure
the door is latched as that is what keeps
AUSBLICK
the
navigator in the car on left hand bends
when he is too busy making calculations
to hang on.
We round the uphill right-hander under
the full power of a sick engine to find a
sharp downhill left over the crest of the
first apex. I become aware of the
familiar sensation of oversteer
accompanied by the grunting sounds
unique to the vintage Avon's sliding as
I
desperately try to calculate how far
back we are while learning how to read
TSD instructions. "Sorry!", is quickly
heard from the driver. I momentarily
look up, we are only slightly sideways
and travelling parallel to the shoulder at
about 2 feet distance. "No problem, I
am use to oversteer", I calmly reply. If
it was anyone else at the wheel I might
be concerned but this is one driver who
certainly knows his motorcar.
Soon we catch #26 (The support/chase
vehicle). Now we are only 11 minutes
out to our position of #15. Slowly we
work our way through the pack. We
know we can make our start time for
Stage 2 now. We do so with 3 minutes
to spare.
The second stage is going well. I even
think I know how to read TSD
instructions now. Triumph! Literally.
Coming out of that turn up ahead. A
white Triumph that is suppose to be
ahead of us. "Hey! Isn't that our turn
No! Don't turn! It's a trap! I bet this is
a loop road." Sure enough it is. Not
only did we make the correct turn
avoiding the trap, but we aced the
check point. The first time we have
been recorded on time all day. "Hey, I
can do this navigating thing!" We're
going to do alright; or are we
"What is your guess" 'Sounds like the
ping is coming from the exhaust.'
"Maybe the engine isn't breathing.
How does the power feel" 'Like #@$
%!' We stop and pull the air filter
hoping that perhaps the engine will
breath better. We check the chokes on
the carbs. The car continues to run
poorer and poorer. We have now fallen
badly behind again. We are waving
Page 2

others past as we nurse the dying
engine. The ping is quite loud now.
We pull over next to the Triumph that
looks like it has stopped due to a flat
tyre. Wrong again. They are waiting
for the support vehicle & trailer as they
have blown a differential.
With the support trailer in use we now
decide to head straight for home and
forego the afternoon stages. Being just
on the South side of Bellingham we
figure we can limp home to change
cars. It would be too risky to continue
on the long road with the car as it is.
We made it. The last hill was 5 mph in
first gear but the old girl got us home
without any compression on the first 2
cylinders and the remaining cylinders
down on compression.
Not to be discouraged, we hopped into
my 1972 E3 Alpina and headed to Harrison
for the second day of the Rally.
After all, we were only running last
with 55 out of a possible 60
demerit points. We could redeem
ourselves yet.
Day two:
I'm serious now. We are on our home
turf of British Columbia and I don't
intend on being last. The rally
instructions are received and I start to
make our calculations immediately.
Sultan declines the driver's seat at the
pole and takes charge of navigation.
The beautiful red Aston Martin DB4
pulls out at 14 mins past. During the
next minute before we are waved forth
I learn that my seasoned rally partner is
navigating this event for the first time.
This is going to be something new for
both of us I think as we pull away
leaving car #16, a Jag E type, behind at
the pole.
With a stop watch as our guide and
error corrections for the stock
odometer we are confident that we are
on track and on time. Today's route
doubles back on itself and we find
ourselves playing for road space with
other competitors. Everyone is well
aware of the importance of the time
position on the route so passing is
graciously allowed by others where it
would normally be impossible.
"Check out these railway tracks! I
don’t know why I bothered to stop. I
doubt a train has been through here in a
long time with all the grass between the
tracks. Better pick up the speed a tad
to allow for the stop and go at the
tracks." 45 seconds later we hear the
familiar two horn blow of a train. Sure
enough, we just missed being taken off
schedule by a C.N. freight. Too bad
for car #16 and the others behind them.
Sultan informs me that my calculations
just gained about 10 minutes from
nowhere. Must have forgot to carry a 1
somewhere. "Quick recalculate!" I am
assured that we have plenty of time to
pull over and redo our calculations as
we have just entered a free zone of
30 km. We have no choice. Our
accuracy depends on those calculations.
I madly punch the calculator keys as
data is called out. We watch #16, #17,
#18, #19 and #20 pass by. After what
seems like eternity we have our new
calculations. Sultan says, "Drive!"
We are off. We pass the support
vehicle that had pulled over up the
road. Perhaps they thought we had a
breakdown. They hear the howl of a
red line gear change into 4 as we
accelerate to recover our lost time over
the next 30 km. The other drivers
know we are behind and that we will be
trying to recover our position so they
gracefully move over as we come up
behind them. The balance of driving
legally and safely to recover our position
is a fine one. Finally we spot #16,
the Jag E Type. We are suppose to be
1 minute ahead of them. As luck
would have it, they have no traffic in
front and we plunge to where we think
we should be. Seconds later we leave
the free zone and pass a marker that we
can verify our time at. "5 seconds
fast!", exclaims my navigator, "See I,
told you we could make it!" A moment
later we pass a check point.
"Do you see what I see Not another
train! Count the engines; it is a long
one. I guess we won't be so lucky this
time." But as luck would have it, the
route turned to the left just before the
tracks. As the train along side went
AUSBLICK
East and we went West, we wondered
if this road would cross the tracks
before the end of the train. Our answer
came quickly. Up ahead what do we
see Cars #7 through #14 waiting at
the crossing. Luck was with us. Just
before we reached the others, the train
cleared the crossing. The cars ahead
left in a fury to recover from the delay.
We crossed the tracks on time and
proceeded past a check point. I turned
to Sultan, grinned and said, "Well that
evens things up a bit for yesterday."
The rain began as we started the
confusing portion of the rally. It wasn't
long before we noticed #14, the red
DB4, taking a wrong turn up ahead.
We were now ahead of them. They had
at least 1.5 minutes to make up. Sure
enough the red beast appeared in the
mirror, the beautiful sound of the
British big block engine doing its job
could be heard. The twin air horns
burst out a warning of the impending
pass as I moved to the side to let them
by. This is what I came to be part of.
Before long we made an incorrect turn.
My fault. Should have listened to my
navigator. Needless to say we needed
to gain 30 seconds before the next
check point. With the rain I changed
my driving style to the days of ice and
snow from Northern B.C. Without
thinking I slipped the car through a left
hand 90 degree by inducing oversteer
prior to the turn itself. Suddenly I
remembered I had a passenger. In a
moment of deja-vu I looked at Sultan,
"Sorry!" The calm answer returned
was, "2 seconds fast!"
Performance Drivers Club
BMWCCBC member
Car: BMW 328is
Peter Vapenik
Performance Drivers Club first track
day of the year and my first since 1992.
The day started early, it was 7:45 am
when I arrived at the track and it was
cold, but dry. As soon as I drove in my
car went to tech inspection then I was
directed to my group. About 8:30 we
had a drivers meeting where the days
agenda and basic track rules where
given to us, then there was a theory
session for the first timers with the
instructors from Performance Racing. I
have not been on a racetrack since 1992
but I have done many track events at
the old Westwood racetrack and SIR in
the 80’s and early 90’s driving BMWs
and Porsches. So I was taken on a
check-ride with Mary Beth, one of
Performance Racing instructors. Mary
Beth drove my car around the track
showing me the proper line and brake
and passing zones. After a few laps it
was my turn, yes I felt a little bit rusty
at first but soon I things started coming
back and with some coaching from
Mary Beth things started to come
together. After the first session was
over I was rated and given an overall
Excellent rating from my instructor,
placing me into the yellow group.
There was a new M5, Viper and several
newer Porsches in this group. I had a
lot of fun chasing the M5 and the
viper, they would pull away from me
on the front strait but I would catch
them in the back windy section and
eventually I got by them. New slotted
rotor and carbon brake pads sure
helped a lot there. After the 2 nd session
we stopped for lunch, after lunch, more
track time. After my 3 rd track session, I
walked to turn 3 to watch others and
see what lines work well there. Turn 3
is very important because it leads you
to turn 4, where you do not have much
room for mistakes. As I was watching
the red group going threw turn 3 a
Porsche broke a oil line coming out of
turn 1 and dropped oil all the way to
turn 7 and out to the pits. Because the
oil was on the race line, it caused a
couple of cars to spin, so the session
was quickly stopped. Within a half an
hour a couple of Mission Race track
workers had it all covered with some
quick dry and the red group was able to
go out and finish their session. I was
able to go to different parts of the track
and watch drivers’ go around and listen
to the instructors makes comments. At
any time you can ask an instructor to
come out with you to give you some
advice, they do know what they are
talking about. Their suggestion will
help you become a smoother driver and
make you quicker around the track.
Soon it was time for our 4 th track
session and some more fun Mission
NIXON - YARD SALE
May 13 & 14, 2000
Raceway is a great track for a person
who wants to work on his or hers
driving skills. I found the instructor at
Performance Racing very helpful, able
to help the first timers and the advance
drivers alike. At the end of the day I
was ever satisfied with the event and I
know what I will have to work on next
time, there is always room for
improvement and these track event are
the best and safest way to work on
them. I can hardly wait for the next
track day at Portland. I would like to
thank Dennis Lee from Performance
Drivers Club; Frank from Driver’s
Edge and the people at Performance
Racing.
After 26 years Wray was cleaning house with deals deals & more deals to be had for
those ever increasing BMW enthusiasts. This included those hard to find parts and
for any of those who had them.
AUSBLICK
discovered that we had to cross the
bridge in front of us in about 2 minutes
for our car position. That's not hard,
except we had to cross it from the other
side. Imagine finding your way
through the town of Harrison with a
sketchy map to guide you. Obstacles
such as little old ladies crossing the
street and Telus vans at 4-way stops
became
frustrations. Needless to say we didn't
make it. We were close at 12 seconds
late, but in a Monte Carlo stage you
compete for bonus points in a 3 second
window.
BC CLASSIC MOTOR CAR SHOW AT THE
TRADEX
April 29, 2000
A show for classic & older cars with a little American muscle thrown in. Thanks goes
to Dave for the extra work and effort he put in to appear on
behalf of our club. Dave spent his weekend promoting and educating the
public about BMWCC BC.
Overall Saturday was a great day. We
finished 3rd for Saturday with only 5
demerit points putting us 20th overall
in a rally of 26. Not bad for first time
navigators, a breakdown and no rally
trip meter on board. I can't wait until
next year. I hope some of you will join
us.
In conclusion to this adventure I would
like to thank the Club members not
mentioned by name who volunteered
their time to help in this event.
I know the rally organizers appreciated
your help. My intention is to get
together with some of the other Car
Clubs in the area to run the Saturday
stages of this rally. Come join in the
fun. I’ll keep you posted. By the way,
the 327/28 blew a head gasket and is
now back on the road.
Motoring down
Memory Lane
Episode 5
by Don Beddows
Then there was the day that the
earth vanished!
When I went to work for the Provincial
Government they entrusted me with an
OFFICIAL VEHICLE. My heart
swelled with pride and the crest on the
doors came in handy. There was the
occasion when, late for work, I was
buzzing along Grandview Highway (it
was a Hillman Minx and it buzzed)
when the local constabulary stopped
me to remonstrate about my speed.
Seeing that it was an OFFICIAL VE-
HICLE they assumed (assisted by the
driver) that this was an emergency and
insisted that I had a police escort to the
New Westminster boundary. I was
thankful they didn’t take me all the way
to the office ! The car was a beautiful
sky blue by the way.
When the Deas Island thruway was
under construction I was able to ignore
the detour signs by putting on my best
SENIOR OFFICIAL EXPRESSION
while acknowledging the salutations of
the highways construction crews and
taking advantage of what was in effect
a wide open gravel
drag-strip.
It was then that the earth vanished.
One moment all was well and suddenly
there was nothing to be seen but the
sky. For an unmeasured interval I considered
the possibilities –
a: The end of the world was nearer
than I thought
b: Someone dropped “the bomb”
c: I had been transported to Oz
d: The hood has flown up.
I settled on “d” and came to a
standstill. Some banging on the hood
catch with a handy rock and I was on
my way again. All was well with the
world.
For me, this little car was a luxury.
How deprived I had been ‘till now!
Eventually I purchased a 1948 Pontiac
in which I felt as though I was driving a
bus. We were sufficiently adventurous
to tour the Province in this car. The
Trans-Canada through the Fraser
Canyon was still incomplete in its
construction and we arrived just too
late to pass a blasting area. We waited
for 2 hours on an exposed mountain
side in the middle of the afternoon with
the temperature at about 90 degrees F.
it was then I decided never to join the
Foreign Legion. When we eventually
got going, we stayed overnight at
Boston Bar and cooled off under a
garden hose.
The following day we had a flat
between Cache Creek and Kamloops.
Now it was about 110F. and tempers
became a little frayed. I discovered,
serendipitously, the origin of that well
known English expression “#### you
Jack!”
This car eventually expired; it sort of
sighed and died but not before it had
tried to wreck itself and exit this
existence with honor. The engine
mounts gave way and upon accelerating
the engine tilted, grabbed the throttle
linkage and took off out of control
like an enraged bull. Counter measure
– turn off the ignition; fortunately this
did not also lock the steering. There’s
nothing quite like the excitement of the
old bangers!
So we became the owners of a 1954
Ford – this was Ford’s centennial year
and it was a better car than I had
anticipated. My wife destroyed it in a
spectacular roll-over. Again, we were
unhurt. I had imported seat belts from
Europe, still unknown over here. My
friends thought they were silly. We
discovered they weren’t. Now they are
universal and bring two main advantages.
First, they save one from the
second collision. The first collision is
when the vehicle hits something, the
second is when you and your
passengers hit the vehicle.
Second they keep the driver in the seat
and in position to maintain control
during nasty unwanted motion: the
chance to drive out of trouble.
AUSBLICK
This reminds me – driving position is
of primary importance for control. Sit
back; with arms stretched and shoulders
pressed against the seat, the top of
the steering wheel should meet the
roots of your fingers. The seat should
first be adjusted fore and aft so that
with feet on the bulkhead, knees are
about thirty degrees bent and then the
seat back
adjusted to give correct reach. If now
you tend to sit forward too much, you
will be surprised how much easier it is
to drive when you sit back.
Bye for now…
BIMMER Mailing list
for Canadians
Don Beddows
Inspired by the successes of other
mailing list, I've started a mailing list
for BMW owners in Canada. I thought
this new list would be a good place
to discuss local events (well, local to
Canada, anyway...), Canadian parts
suppliers and garages, as well as US
and other suppliers that regularly sell
to Canada. Also Canadian BMW
dealer recommendations, and cars and
parts buying and selling. If anyone
wants to talk about heated windshield
washers and heated door locks, we can
do that too! General BS'ing is
welcome, as far as I'm concerned.
(Which isn't very far...)
So feel free to join up - All are
welcome.
Ross Bentley’s High
Performance Driving Tips
#7
HEEL & TOE DOWNSHIFTING
In a previous High Performance
Driving Tip I talked about the
basics of shifting and mentioned
the need to “heel and toe” downshift.
So, let’s take a detailed look
at this technique.
First, why heel and toe downshift
Have you ever downshifted by
simply depressing the clutch,
moving the shifter into the next
lower gear, and releasing the
clutch I bet you have. What was
the result At best, a less than
perfectly smooth downshift. At
worst, the driving wheels locked
up momentarily and maybe even
made the car skid sideways.
The reason for heel and toeing is
to complete your downshift
smoothly, so that it doesn’t upset
the balance of the car, while
braking at the same time by
operating both the brake and gas
pedals simultaneously with your
right foot. Sound complicated It
may be at first, but with a little
practice you’ll be amazed at how
good you will get at this critical
technique.
The best way to learn and practice
this technique is to try it before
the car is even started. If you can't
do it properly sitting still, then you
won't get it right with the car
moving.
Here is a step-by-step explanation
of how to heel and toe:
1. Begin braking, squeezing the
pedal with the ball of your
right foot.
2. Get your left foot in position
to depress the clutch - but not
yet.
3. Continue braking, increasing
pressure to maximum braking
effort.
4. Depress the clutch pedal and
gently move the shift lever
into the next lower gear.
5. Continuing braking, and with
the clutch still depressed,
pivot your right foot at the
ankle and let the right side of
it squeeze the gas pedal, blipping
the throttle (revving the
engine).
6. Still maintaining your braking,
pivot your right foot back, and
ease the clutch out.
7. Continue braking.
Of course, with a little practice, it
isn’t seven distinct steps, but
rather one smooth, fluid motion.
Eventually, it will become a
natural, subconscious technique,
like turning the steering wheel to
go around a corner.
One of the most important aspects
of heel and toeing is blipping the
throttle. You must match the
speed of the engine with the speed
of the gear you are selecting.
When doing this, don't watch the
tachometer - your eyes should be
looking ahead. The correct
blipping of the throttle and
matching of revs depends on
practice and input from the ears
and the forces on the body. If you
don't blip enough, the driving
wheels will lock up when the
clutch is re-engaged. A major
no-no! If you blip too much, the
AUSBLICK
car will attempt to accelerate - you
are supposed to be slowing down.
The best way is to rev the engine
up slightly higher than required,
select the required gear as the revs
drop, and quickly engage the
clutch.
Remember, it takes practice -
constant practice. It may seem
like there are a lot of things to do
all at once, but once you get the
hang of it, you will be able to
complete a heel and toe downshift
in about a second. To do this
properly your car must be set up
correctly. When the brake pedal
is depressed fully, it should still be
slightly higher and directly beside
the gas pedal. Most cars are set
up pretty well. Still, you may
want to bend or add an extension
to gas pedal to suit you – do not
attempt to modify the brake pedal.
Heel and toe downshifting is a
technique that every successful
race driver uses every single time
he downshifts on the racetrack.
It’s also a technique that every
successful high performance
driver uses on the street, as it puts
less wear and tear on the car and
provides the driver with more
control. Learn it – use it.
AUSBLICK
This tech session started with a rally designed by
Dave Beddows and finished at a restoration shop to
see what Dave has been working on……
here is Rolfs version of the day --
Driving in a Fun Rally
or
I wasn’t lost honest, at least not that
I would admit to
by Rolf Drommer
Honestly, I wasn’t lost. I knew exactly
where I was. I mean I was facing the
road sign that told me where I was.
Add to that I had been on this road and
at this location before, (Zero Ave and
265 St right next to the Aldergrove
Border Crossing) so why was I lost
Well, ok as mentioned, I wasn’t
technically lost, I was off course, and I
had to figure out what I had done
wrong. So there I was on the side of the
road, map and instructions in hand,
trying to figure out how I got here, and
where I went wrong. Oh sure, if really
desperate or lost, I could open the help
page, but that would cost me points,
and wouldn’t be very sporting.
Besides, as mentioned, I knew exactly
where I was. Off Course, of course.
This was fun and challenging!
It had all started innocently just over an
hour ago. It was a beautiful clear
Sunday morning, and 8 cars with their
drivers had assembled at the designated
meeting spot. After swapping tales, and
normal car chat, Dave handed out
instruction kits and gave us a few
additional verbal instructions.
At the appointed time he let one car
after head out, each separated from the
previous by a minute or two intervals.
Even though I didn’t have the required
navigator (neither did most of the other
cars preset), I figured I could make a go
of it. I had looked at the instructions
that were handed out. Sure they were a
bit cryptic, and required a bit of math
and figuring, but I didn’t see anything
that looked like it would stop me. I had
even gotten ësmartí and quickly jotted
down some translations to instructions
while I was listening to the rest of the
instructions. I thought I was being
smart. Ha. (Always check and doublecheck
your math)
Ok, so the first part wasn’t that bad.
This was going to be a piece of cake.
Then just when I thought things were
going good, I had my first off course
event. I was looking for the turn I had
scribbled down. You know that math I
mentioned, well, the turn never
happened, so when I finally checked
the instructions against the signs I was
seeing, I realized my math error, had to
find a place to safely turn around, and
then head back to the turn I had missed
(remembering of course that this time it
would be a wrong turn to make the
right turn if you know what I mean,
since I was coming from the opposite
direction.)
Well you get the idea. I was having
fun. The sun was out, the top was
down. The roads were good, and there
was virtually no traffic. Back on track,
I was a bit more intent on not making
any more silly little errors. At the next
stop, I took a moment to check all the
scribbles I had made next to the cryptic
instructions. I didnít want any more
math or other errors.
So how did I get lost, ah I mean off
course the second time
Would you believe me if I told you that
I second-guessed the instructions
Well, that and the fact I never did see
“The busy beaver on the right” as my
clue to turn at the next through road on
the left, (add to that that I missed the
obvious wrong turn clue of ëIf you
discover too four fore is a dead endÖí. I
was after all in territory I knew a bit
about. I have been on Zero Avenue
many a time taking my son to the
Aldergrove Border Crossing when the
truck crossing was jammed solid.
Simply put I second guessed the
instructions and figured we were going
to turn somewhere on the other side of
265 near the border crossing.
So now there I was at the side of the
road, not wanting to open the cheater
page. Trying to figure out where I
should have turned. I read the
instructions forward and backward
looking for other information. Then it
finally clicked, and I saw what I had
been missing the ëtoo four foreí clue.
Hum, I was at 265 St. 244 St was too
far past the designated turn, check the
map, that must mean 240 was the
correct turn. Read the instructions
ahead on 240, and check against map,
yup, looks like it would work.
(Remember I didn’t have a navigator
with me, so I had to pre-plan my getting
back on track, any partial back
tracking without knowing where I was
going would only make thins worse. I
knew that from doing these things
some 30 years ago while in the sports
car club at university. Come to think of
it,
sometimes having a navigator along
didn’t help either. It just meant there
were two lost people in the car.
So, time to turn around, and head back
25 blocks from 265 St to 240 St and
make the wrong turn to be on the right
track. Just a good thing that the weather
was nice, and the traffic on Zero
Avenue was minimal. A fun
Sunday drive. 5k in 5 th gear.
Page 10

The rest is history. Once I got back on
track, I worked hard at staying on
course. There were one or two more
questionable sections, but frequent
stops and checking against the map and
the instructions got me through. Also
thanks to Brian in his red E30 318is as
we both searched for the correct roads.
Not having a navigator, I missed two
more small items, one of the street
names around the Abbotsford Airport,
and a side trip to Telfords Farms, but I
knew of the Telfords (another long
story that goes into my past, and days
while in University, I worked in the
delivery department at Woodward’s
and Jim Telford kept talking about the
farm he was buying out in the valley).
All in all, the drive was a lot of fun.
I’m ready to do another one, this time
preferably with a navigator, or I could
be someone’s navigator (came in 3 rd
novice once on the UBC Thunderbird
Rally back in the early 70ís)
Oh yeah, part of the reason for the trip
was to have lunch and see the 507 as it
was being restored, and that part of the
day worked out just fine. Lunch was
great, and chatting with the fellow club
members and comparing notes on being
lost was a hoot. The 507, well, it looks
great even in it ís naked state as it sits
on a skewer and is being lovingly
restored.
If we have another fun rally, count me
in.
Thanks Dave.
Was my face red - so was the
car!!!!
Jewel
It’s a nervous excitement I’m feeling.
It’s the final moment when the Driving
School is about to begin. Admittedly
my driving skills are ok, would never
profess to being a great driver, considered
average. Confidence is an issue,
especially driving a vehicle with more
oomph, than I currently use and its also
the husbands baby - pride and joy, the
long awaited dream car or what he
would settle for because if we don’t
win the lotto or inherit $$$ he will
never see the Lambo he drools for.
The day is progressing, going ok,
confidence is building but slowly - this
car handles way different than the
station wagon I commute in. To assist
in speeding me along with the car I get
a little assistance; a ride along to
instruct me in the do’s and don’ts.
Enter into the next drill - I brake hard -
hear “good job” - then white smoke
swallows the view and you hear “brake
fire” stay in the car - “no its coolant -
hose blown” “off the track NOW”
off I go.
I park the beast head hung low - no big
AUSBLICK
deal if its a blown hose, BUT no, hoses
looks fine - now what do I do - its still
the prize car - crap it had to happen to
me.....I broke the “baby”.
The offers of help were numerable and
greatly appreciated - the day wasn’t
even half over and I was out for the
count. Having borrowed a cell phone
- a quick call to the dealership to
discover the possibilities of what had
happened - maybe warranty repair;....tow
truck needed , dispatched ,
last a call to the husband.
After all that; it was a warranty repair -
the exhaust manifold had warped letting
coolant into the engine causing a
hydro lock and in the end an engine to
be
rebuilt.
Hee hee I didn’t break it but it was still
embarrassing having my “Ford” die in
front of all those awesome BMW’s -
but I would still do it again in a flash to
become a better progressive driver.
The instructors were great and so was
everyone out there who gave me a
hand.
Many thanks to you all.
Where they were headed for - restoration
central - where Dave is restoring a 507
Above - watching the action
Center - parked and going no where
Bottom - going & gone to the
dealership to investigate…...
A Bavarian town experience and a tour of the North Cascades Loop
Contact Person(s): Rolf Drommer, Kimberly Langston @ Rodeway Inn, Leavenworth
Leavenworth bills itself as an authentic Bavarian style town in the Cascades Mountains of Washington State. What better than
to explore the fun mountain roads that get you to and from this Bavarian town with a BMW, and to celebrate a bit while in
Leavenworth. We thought so too, and last year we managed to catch the interest of some 114 BMW types who arrived from 6
different clubs in our region to meet with fellow BMW owners. This year we have revised the format of the event, added an
extra evening for those that are interested in more sight seeing and generally have tried to blend driving fun with a great destination
and scenery. Partial details: Friday evening welcome reception, Saturday morning Lake Wenatchee – Plain Valley
RATING DESCRIPTIONS:
Travel Ratings are a new feature we are trying for events. Ratings given are estimates only, and are an
indicator to give you an idea of what to expect. We will try to give Cost and Time rating to help you with
deciding on suitability of the trip.
The Cost Rating is given by a dollar sign.
We currently rate from 1 to 3 for cost. One is the base rating for a lunch out, so expect something from
$10 to $25 cost. 2 rates at $50 to $100 and 3 rates at over $100 expected cost.
The Time Rating is geared to letting you know how much time to set aside for the event. The ratings are
generally from 1 to 4. A rating of 1 means part of the day, 2 is the better part of the day, and 3 is a full
day while 4 is for overnight or multi day events.
Any questions please contact Rolf or one of the Board Members for help.
MEMBERSHIP HELP IS NEEDED
All events organized by the BMWCCBC are arranged by volunteers. The services of volunteers are very important
to a club not only to keep member costs down but to meld the members together so that the events arranged are as
large as a success as they currently are. Without the help of volunteers there would be fewer social events and all
EDITORIAL COMMENT
Hello all again,
CONGRATULATIONS!! We are 2
years old.
I say “we” and offer you all
congratulations as this is a club because
of everyone of you involved.
A club that started with an interest and
our 6 founding members each
contributing their own skills, desires,
ideas and energy to recruit a
membership of friends, family and
strangers (I know I’ve approached a
few strangers and met some great
people doing it - just to introduce a
club; which I think is worth being part
of) who then go and ask 2 friends all
with the same ambitions and interests
and so on. The membership is
continually growing mostly so far from
word of mouth and a great reputation
with lots of events that make a club fun
as well as educational with places and
people to see.
Clubs start with people with drive and
motivation and it grows from there…
each member contributing something,
large or small. There isn’t one member
who can claim anything over another as
time spent fostering a club or hobby is
within the individual. So as a member
if you have something you wish to say
or time you wish to contribute but you
feel it is too small, offer it anyway.
The only one who benefits is you as the
club grows stronger with the little
things that add up to great big things.
So as the editor I encourage each and
everyone of you to contact me or the
membership Director Rolf, with
anything you may be able to contribute
to the club even if it is just your
attendance in a club event. This way
we will get to meet another great
talented person…….or even 1/2 hour a
month of your time assisting someone
in organizing an event ; giving a
suggestion for an event or submitting
an article to our newsletter -- DO IT!!!!
Remember you are part of a
membership without you it would just
be me and that isn’t much fun and
pretty lonely…..
This is a great month for all members
of the BMW club. Happy 2nd
Birthday!!
