Dir: Giddeon Koppel
UK · 2008 · 94 minutes
“At the close of his recent and
superb collection of essays,
Gray’s Anatomy, the political
philosopher John Gray urges
upon humanity a new quietism.
“Other animals,” he writes,
“do not need a purpose in
life. A contradiction to itself,
the human animal cannot do
without one. Can we not think
of the aim of life as being simply
to see?” It may seem an overly
simplified exhortation given
the dire predicament we have
got ourselves into, yet would it
not make at least a good start
on the road to recovery from
our present soul-sickness if we
were to stand back and just
look? Now more than ever we
need films such as this: grave,
measured, subtly comic and
beautifully wrought, free of
polemic and yet offering a new
way of seeing that is as old as
Arcady. SLEEP FURIOUSLY is,
simply, a masterpiece.”
PASG
The Frog Prince
Prince Ferdia has a problem. He is gradually turning into a frog and only the love
of a princess can break the spell. Maggie, the Woman Who Lives in a Shoe, also has
problems. Her evil landlord Baron Graspalot wants to evict her. Will Ferdia find his
princess before he goes green or will Maggie’s daughter Fiona distract him from
his quest? To find out book now for PASG’s heart-warming, hilarious pantomime.
Directed by Jaimie Carswell, with script by Maeve Ingoldsby and choreography by
Paula McGurrell, this year’s panto in the Black Box is not to be missed.
Renmore’s 31st Annual Pantomime launches the
spectacular adventures of poor, kind-hearted ‘Mother
Goose’ whose cottage is targeted by the evil Baxter
Banker as the site for his new Super-Bank.
His plans are thwarted when her magical goose starts
to lay golden eggs. However, she loses her personal
share of the ‘Celtic Tiger’ by exchanging her Goose for
the chance to become young and beautiful. Through
many comical and topical twists, Baxter, assisted by his
devious daughter and two political jokers, meet their
match in Fairy Harney; Gordon Goose marries Feena
Gale and Goodness wins out with laughter and song in
the best pantomime tradition.
Scripted by Panto Dame, Peter Kennedy who plays
‘Mother Goose’, it also features a host of talented
Galway performers, stunning dance routines, sparkling
sets & costumes and the delightful little Renmore
Smurfs. This superb family entertainment is directed by
Brian & Seán Power.
Something always goes wrong when
putting on a play. Arguments, Money,
Romance. You’re lucky if it’s just
one thing. So at times it’s good to
remember you’re Playing at Plays.
After its sell out success in October RESERVOIR
DOGS returns for another run in Galway. The story
is set around a bungled jewellery store robbery.
Each gangster is assigned a colour, and instructed
not to discuss each other’s personal background
to minimise the chances of them being traced if
someone were to be caught.
Cast includes Barry Keane, Mike O’Malley, Jude
As You Are By Muirne Bloomer
Who would you rather be: Superman or Clark Kent? We all
want to stand out from the crowd - but are we willing to pay
the price? In Muirne Bloomer’s quirky world, six extraordinary
individuals are tested to the limit as they struggle for control
over themselves and each other.
Faun By David Bolger
Nijinsky was worshipped as the greatest dancer of the
twentieth century, but audiences rioted when they saw his
first ballet, L’après midi d’un Faune. It is hard to tell what
shocked them most, the bare feet, shameless sensuality or
revolutionary dance style. Mixing Debussy’s famous score with
Queen, David Bolger explores how dance still reconnects us
with our feelings and imagination. But if nothing shocks us any
more, how can we ever really break free?
Molly Bloom’s soliloquy at the end of the James Joyce’s Ulysses
where Molly’s voice is heard. In it, we hear the otherwise silent
character bear her soul on life, love, sex and loneliness.
By William Shakespeare
Alan Stanford, one of the Ireland’s finest directors, returns to the Town Hall stage
Hamlet is perhaps the most quoted, but least understood of all of Shakespeare’s
plays. Hamlet, Prince of Denmark’s world comes crashing down. The King is dead,
murdered by his uncle Claudius. His mother, the Queen marries Claudius and
Hamlet must now avenge his father’s death. As Hamlet sets out on his act of
revenge, he is fraught by an intense psychological and philosophical struggle that
asks some of the most fundamental questions about life and death. Marty Rea stars
as Hamlet with some of Ireland’s finest actors in the supporting roles that include
Stephen Brennan as Polonius and Maeve Fitzgerald as Ophelia.
The smash hit comedy is back - after its 22 week sell out
Dublin season and sell-out Irish tour in 2007/8 this smash hit
show is back for its final Irish dates.
With a script packed full of memorable one liners backed by
an instantly recognisable soundtrack of 25 parodied versions
of 60s, 70s and 80s pop classics, the hilarious and uplifting
Menopause The Musical is heading to the Town Hall Theatre!
The all-singing, all-dancing comedy is set in a department
store, where four women with seemingly nothing in common
by Jeanie Linders
Featuring Adele King (Twink) and Linda Martin
meet by chance at a lingerie sale. The all female cast makes
fun of forgetfulness, mood swings, wrinkles, night sweats and
chocolate binges. A sisterhood is created between these four
women as they realise that menopause is no longer “The
Silent Passage”, but an unavoidable stage in every woman’s life.
Since March 2001, the hilarious Menopause The Musical has
entertained and inspired audiences across the world. Grab
your coat, your menopause medication and your friends for a
fabulous and funny night out at the Town Hall Theatre.
DANCING AT
LUGHNASA
By Brian Friel
Dancing at Lughnasa is considered to be
one of the great theatrical successes
of modern times. This play of layered
meanings, conflicting rituals and family
tensions has been described as ‘an
invocation of the interior landscape
of a group of human beings trapped in
their domestic situation but also of the
wider landscape, interior and exterior,
Christian and pagan, of which they are
nonetheless a part’.
Patrician Musical Society
The Mikado
By Gilbert & Sullivan
The Patrician Musical Society
presents the hilarious Gilbert &
Sullivan classic, The Mikado.
Without a doubt, The Mikado is the
best known G&S show and is filled
with wonderful music and bellyaching
laughs and this is a must for
all the family.
Featuring Three Little Maids, I’ve Got
a Little List, The Sun and I, Tit-Willow
and Alone and Yet Alive, the show
also features some of the funniest
characters in musical theatre.
Directed by Tim Landers with
John Roe as Musical Director, early
booking is again advised.
‘it’s impossible not to laugh’
New York Times
‘A warm-hearted show, bouncy and frivolous…
the women who packed the Shaw loved it’.
