CAL Basketball Goes 5-1
On Tuesday December 4, CAL traveled east to play Shelby County
High School. At the end of the 1st quarter CAL was leading 17 -10
and at halftime CAL was
up 38-21. The second half
was similar to the first as
CAL won handily 74-55.
The balance scoring attack
was led by Sawyer Hobbs with 14, Chase Darst 13, Logon Wade 10
and Colton Talley 10. CAL also received nice play from Max Duff,
Paul Barry, Ryan Long, Brad Fenton and Zach Passifume. The win
improved CAL’s record to 3-1. (continued on next page)
On Friday December 7, CAL was at home to face Oldham County
High School, an evenly matched opponent. Oldham County entered
the game undefeated and had previously beaten Lexington Christian
Academy by 11, a team CAL had lost to in its opening game. The
referees determined not to let the excitement of the game contribute
to a physical game called a very tight game the entire game which
resulted in several players getting in foul trouble. CAL started the
game by Logan Wade
hitting a couple of deep
three pointers which provided CAL the ability to lead the 1st
quarter 18-9. The second quarter saw Oldham County fighting
back to being within 2 points but CAL rebounded and led 31-26
at halftime. The second half saw a spirited CAL team continue to
play “maybe its best defense of the year” and Logan Wade continue
with his “hot
hand” as CAL pulled
away from Oldham
County with a 73-55 victory, improving CAL’s record to 4-1.
Wade led CAL in scoring with 21 points (6) three pointers and one
three point play “the old fashion way”—but this was truly a team
effort with Paul Barry and Sawyer Hobbs providing 10 points each,
Zach Passifume 8, Max Duff 8, Chase Darst 6, and Parker Hobbs
5. Ryan Long also contributed a significant role in the team’s victory.
On Saturday December 8, CAL was at home to play a district rival
Kentucky Country Day (KCD). CAL started slow trailing KCD 7-6
at the end of the 1st quarter but finished strong with View a 63-43 CAL High victory.
never get it closer than 6 points and CAL lost 52 - 34. CAL was lead by Jonathan Cheek (10 pts), Bryce Ballard
This week's schedule included 3 games: Crosby 12/3 at home (non-conference game) , North Oldham 12/4 away and East Oldham
12/3/12 - CAL 8TH GRADE LADY CENTURIONS VS. CROSBY MIDDLE
This was a hard fought contest against a very good Crosby team. Despite our team's best
effort, Crosby snuck by in the last minute to take the victory by 2 points, winning by a
final score of 36 to 34.
We have split this series this year with Crosby with each squad winning one contest. Both
teams would benefit from playing more games against each other.
CAL SIXTH GRADE vs. NORTH OLDHAM
Sometimes they are just taller. In the only game of the week, the sixth grade
Centurion basketball team welcomed North Oldham to the Red Gym for the
eighth game of the year. North Oldham’s game was predicated on getting the
ball to their big man who CAL could not stop on this day. He scored early,
often and late and led the North Oldham team to a double digit victory over
the Centurions.
North Oldham began the game in a 1-3-1 zone defense that troubled CAL’s
offensive flow. Luke Purvis showed grit and patience in breaking the zone
and getting his team’s offense set up. Jack Payne began the game with a basket
but Payne and CAL had a difficult time thereafter. Elijah Smith kept his 3
-point shooting streak alive as he
dropped in another rainbow three. Seth
Miller gave CAL some much needed inside
scoring presence in the second half
going 2-2 from the field on strong put-backs. CAL was led in scoring by
Elijah Smith (5), Seth Miller (4) and Stephen Wilson (4). Payne and
Kaden Weiter led the team in assists. Luke Paulson and Austin Richardson
led the team in rebounding. When the opponent is bigger and outside
shots are not falling, victory is hard to come by. It was on this day
and CAL went down to defeat.
