claimed an American aircraft<br />

was hit by anti-aircraft fire and<br />

explored, crashing in flames<br />

after two bodies were thrown<br />

from their aircraft. Their<br />

remains were found buried in<br />

the village in a fenced off area<br />

with flowers. The aircraft was<br />

identified as being U.S. Navy.<br />

The most disturbing location<br />

was first identified as a<br />

P47 Thunderbolt U.S. fighter<br />

aircraft. The pilot’s body had<br />

been recovered by villagers<br />

and buried nearby. However,<br />

there followed a report by villagers<br />

that the Japanese had captured<br />

30 U.S. soldiers and executed them<br />

on site. As the Japanese retreated,<br />

they then cannibalized two village<br />

women. The U.S. Army is being<br />

advised for further investigation.<br />

A Japanese aircraft impacted vertically<br />

on a mountaintop. The village<br />

brought one set of remains down to<br />

the village, then reported getting sick<br />

and dumping the remains in the river.<br />

A second set of remains was buried<br />

separately. A second Japanese bomber<br />

crashed in an open field near large<br />

bushes. Villagers could not find the<br />

wreck, so “they went to talk with the<br />

spirits.” They returned the next day to<br />

find the wreckage to which they guided<br />

the MIA Hunters.<br />

The jungle is full of awesome surprises.<br />

Not on the search schedule,<br />

was the finding of a deserted Japanese<br />

WWII runway, where, 62 years after<br />

the war ended, still stood the ghosts<br />

of a once mighty air armada – two<br />

Japanese “Betty” bombers partially<br />

overgrown by the jungle. Removed<br />

from a jungle swamp and on the<br />

dockside of the northern city of Lae,<br />

stand the complete, but disassembled<br />

remains of a U.S. Flying Fortress B-<br />

17 bomber called “Swamp Ghost.” It<br />

was lifted in pieces from the swamp a<br />

year ago by salvagers preparing<br />

to ship it to the United<br />

States. Its removal generated<br />

a storm of protest with Papua<br />

New Guinea, leaving the<br />

final home of the bomber a<br />

diplomatic and unresolved<br />

problem.<br />

As a finale to the missions,<br />

yet another mystery may be<br />

solved, Japanese Admiral<br />

Yamamoto, who planned the<br />

attack on Pearl Harbor in<br />

1941, was later shot down in<br />

his “Betty” bomber over the<br />

island of Bouganville, north of Papua<br />

New Guinea. Uprisings on the island<br />

have prevented visitors for the past 10<br />

years, but this has now ended. MIA<br />

Hunters have now found how to reach<br />

the crashed bomber, and will be the<br />

subject of a future expedition.<br />

For the crash sites that were discovered,<br />

their locations are being kept<br />

confidential. There is concern that<br />

wreck hunters may pillage the crash<br />

sites and thereby complicate the<br />

recovery of human remains by the<br />

U.S. Army which is being given complete<br />

information on all the crash site<br />

locations by MIA Hunters.<br />

Aviator/Actor, Cliff Robertson To<br />

Receive Wesley L. McDonald Elder<br />

Statesman of Aviation Award<br />

ARLINGTON, VA.<br />

– The National<br />

Aeronautic<br />

Association, the<br />

oldest aviation<br />

organization in the<br />

United States, has<br />

selected Cliff<br />

Robertson to<br />

Cliff Robertson<br />

receive the 2007<br />

Wesley L. McDonald Elder Statesman<br />

of Aviation Award. Robertson will<br />

receive the award at NAA’s Fall<br />

Awards Banquet on October 29 in<br />

Arlington, Va.<br />

The Elder Statesman Awards were<br />

established in 1954 to honor outstanding<br />

Americans who, by their efforts<br />

over a period of years, have made<br />

contributions of significant value to<br />

aeronautics and have reflected credit<br />

upon America and themselves. The<br />

award was renamed this year in honor<br />

of NAA’s past chairman, Admiral<br />

Wesley L. McDonald. Previous recipients<br />

have included Eddie<br />

Rickenbacker, Jimmy Doolittle, Scott<br />

Crossfield and Chuck Yeager.<br />

Robertson, a lifelong soaring fanatic,<br />

is a member of the Experimental<br />

Aircraft Association (EAA) President’s<br />

Council and was the founding<br />

Chairman of the EAA Young Eagles<br />

Program, a youth development initiative<br />

that has helped put more than 1.5<br />

million future pilots into the air. EAA’s<br />

“Cliff Robertson Work Program” for<br />

young people over the age of 16 is<br />

named in his honor.<br />

Robertson is best known for his<br />

long career as an actor in television<br />

and film, and for his Academy Awardwinning<br />

performance in the 1968 film<br />

“Charly.” It is aviation, however, that<br />

has captured his imagination and his<br />

heart since childhood. The two paths<br />

have intersected many times in his<br />

career, with roles in films like The<br />

Pilot, The Squadron, and Midway.<br />

Robertson has previously received<br />

aviation awards recognizing his<br />

humanitarian flights during the<br />

Biafran Civil War and his faminerelief<br />

missions in Ethiopia.<br />
