INTERIOR DESIGN•PAINTING•PHOTOGRAPHY•PRINTMAKING
WELCOME
Our Certificate Program fosters and encourages personal
creativity, ideas, and artistic excellence. Many of our
students are working adults with families and obligations,
which makes the commitment to their certificate program
so special. They make the commitment to pursue their
dreams whether they are photographers, painters, interior
designers, or printmakers. At the New Hampshire Institute
of Art they experience a collegial environment of students
and faculty working together and supporting each other’s
endeavors. During their certificate sojourn they acquire the
necessary skills and aesthetics to begin to develop
independent voices in their chosen medium.
HISTORY OF THE INSTITUTE
AND THE CERTIFICATE PROGRAM
Founded in 1898 as the Manchester Institute of Arts and Sciences,
the goal of the founders was to cultivate an appreciation of the arts
through progressive, educational instruction. The New Hampshire
Institute of Art is a non –profit institution dedicated to the
education of adults and high school students. The legacy of
providing community education to the Manchester area is an
integral part of the Institute mission statement. The Continuing
Education program has been in existence as an important cultural
center for the community for over 100 years.
In 2001, the New Hampshire Institute of Art received accreditation
from the National Association of Schools of Art and Design. In
2011, the Institute received accreditation from the New England
Association of Schools and Colleges.
The Institute’s two – year Certificate program was inaugurated in
1984 under the guidance of Gary Samson, Photography
Department Chairperson. His inspiration, dedication, passion, and
commitment provided students interested in photography with an
engaging and focused curriculum of study in photography. The
success of the Photography Certificate Program was the incentive
for the addition of certificate programs in Interior Design, Painting,
and Printmaking.
PHILOSOPHY
The program provides adult students with a focused and structured
program of study in their desired area. Students learn through
lectures, class discussions, in-class assignments, group critiques,
individual critiques, and assigned homework. Classes are small and
taught by experienced faculty. This provides a learning environment
where students have the opportunity to excel and acquire handson-experience.
In the final year creative exploration is encouraged
and designed to support the development of an evolving personal
body of work for the graduation exhibition.
PROGRAM OF STUDY
The Certificate Program is a non-degree/non-credit, part-time
course of study. All courses must be taken in their assigned
sequence unless otherwise approved by the Director of Continuing
Education. A series of required and elective studio and lecture
courses provide a solid foundation for students in their area of
concentration. Visual Studies is the first required course for
Painting, Photography, and Printmaking students.
The duration of time required to complete a particular certificate
program is dependent upon two factors as follows: the specific
requirements of the program, which differs among the programs,
and the number of courses a student takes each semester. Please
review the curriculum of study under each Certificate Program for
specifics. Please note: courses may be offered in both the spring/ fall
and may not follow the semester order indicated.
Elective course offerings are determined by the Department
Chairperson and may or may not be offered each semester. Consult
with the Department Chairperson/Advisor to determine appropriate
electives to fulfill requirements. Please see the Continuing
Education Course Schedule for a list of offerings each semester.
Students who have successfully completed the program and are
interested in applying to the BFA program are subject to transfer
review, restrictions by the Admissions Office, and a portfolio review
by a Department Chairperson. Up to 12 credits may be accepted
towards the New Hampshire Institute of Art BFA program. Students
interested in a portfolio review should contact the Admissions
Office at (603) 836-2576.
The granting of credit is determined by the Admissions Office at the
time of application to the BFA program. Enrollment in the
Certificate Program is not a guarantee of acceptance to the BFA
program or the award of credit.
In researching Interior Design programs, I was happy to
find the very comprehensive course of study provided by
the curriculum at the New Hampshire Institute of Art.
The teachers are enlightened professionals with
tremendous creative skills and experience in the industry.
The contacts I made at the school with fellow designers
have enriched my life and business as a professional
