The Temple community has been an a very important
part of our family life. Sharing our time
and social programs has always been the
best part of belonging to this great temple. We
would like to thank the committee for its choice of
recipients for this wonderful honor.
Welcome Friends,
I am proud to be a part of this wonderful occasion where we pause to reflect and to
take the opportunity to pay tribute to four long-time Temple Ner Tamid families.
Collectively, they have been a part of our congregation for some 180 years. They
have left their unique imprints on Temple Ner Tamid life for the last 40 to 50 years.
Yasher Koach and Thank You to Ellen and Frank, Dorothy and Ed (z”l), Jason, and
Janice and Elliot. It is truly fitting that you receive the 2013 Temple Ner Tamid
Lifetime Achievement Award. Anita and I have known all of you for 40 years. We
have worked together on Temple, Sisterhood/Women’s League, and Men’s Club/
Brotherhood programs over those years. Organization names can change over time,
however, their mission is constant; devote your efforts to our Temple Ner Tamid
Community, to our membership, and to our Jewish heritage, and make this place
better than how you found it. Have fun doing what you do and feel good that you
have made a positive difference in people’s lives. The Temple Ner Tamid
community is blessed to have had your support and involvement for all of these
years
I want to acknowledge and thank the many dedicated volunteers who worked on
this Lifetime Achievement Award program so tirelessly to make this event a
success. Many thanks also to the generous supporters of this community event and
to those of you who took the time out of your busy schedules to be here with us
tonight to honor our Lifetime Achievement Award recipients and to celebrate with
us.
As I begin my second 2 nd term as President I am optimistic that Temple Ner Tamid’s
future is bright. Our lay leadership team has brought our finances under control
and our volunteers continue to work on our behalf, motivated perhaps by the great
examples set by our Lifetime Achievement Award recipients.
Thank you for your participation in this tribute and for your investment in the
future of Temple Ner Tamid. Working together, we can achieve all of our hopes and
goals for our Synagogue, Temple Ner Tamid.
A hearty Mazel Tov to Ellen, Frank, Dorothy, Jason, Janice, and Elliot.
Warmest Regards,
Mark Rudin, President
I am pleased to again be the chair of our Temple Ner Tamid Lifetime Achievement Award
program. This award honors those families who have exemplified the ideals of Conservative
Judaism by their many years of dedication, commitment and service to our synagogue and the
greater Jewish community. The four special families we honor tonight have over 170 years of
Temple involvement. Through the years these families have remained steadfast in good times as
well as bad times. They have encouraged younger families to be active and were helpful in giving
advice based on their experience as “having been there and done that”.
This event could not have happened without my two co-chairs - Marty Krinsky and Dick Willens
together with the members of the Fundraising Committee. It takes an enormous amount of time
and commitment for a program like this to be successful. It is also the collective endeavors of you
the congregation — by attending this event, by placing your names in the Tribute Book or by
doing both — that have made this one of the most successful fundraisers in the history of our
congregation. Our synagogue continues to be a vital part of the Jewish Community because of all
of you. Thank you—each and every one of you — for a job well done. Be proud of what we
collectively, have been able to achieve for our Temple Ner Tamid.
Federation of Jewish Men’s Clubs, Inc.
For the past two years, it has been my honor and privilege to serve as the President of the
Temple Ner Tamid Men's Club. Our programs and events such as our annual Men's Club Auction
and Men's Club Scholarship could not have been accomplished without the efforts of our
membership and our past presidents. The Men's club is an important arm of the temple and we
have never failed to support the temple and the community in any way we can. As we celebrate
the special families that have served the temple over the years, I think it is appropriate to look
back and note who the men were that served in the capacity of president of the Men’s Club.
Over the past 50 years there have been 34 men who have guided the Men's Club as President.
“Kol Yisrael Areivim Zeh Lazeh”
All Jews are responsible for (literally, enmeshed with) one another.
–Sanhedrin 27b
The Hebrew concept of Areivut illustrates an interesting tenet of Rabbinic
Jewish thought. This notion of responsibility targets both one’s ability to
carry out others’ obligations, and the ability to prevent others from
transgressing. I can think of no more important place to instill these
values of responsibility than at a synagogue, and no more worthy group
to carry the Areivut banner than this year’s TNT Lifetime Achievement
Award recipients.
Ellen and Frank Chmara, Dorothy and Eddie (z”l) Eisenman, Jason Mazur
and Janice and Elliot Wyner exemplify every aspect of responsibility and
service to Temple Ner Tamid. Collectively, our honorees participate
regularly and chant Haftarah at Shabbat services, bring new members to
the fold, definitively influence various arms of the synagogue, and
envelop TNT history as synagogue presidents in the 1980s and 2000s,
Men’s Club presidents in the 1970s, and Sisterhood presidents in the
1980s and early 1990s. Suffice it to say, not only are our honorees
cherished pillars of the TNT community, but they remain dedicated to
every facet of Temple life.
Our honorees have exhaustively pursued any means to help Temple Ner
Tamid thrive. Singing “Siman Tov, Mazal Tov” may not suffice in
demonstrating our gratitude. But thankfully, on June 9th, we will accept
our own overdue mantle of Areivut to honor these long deserving
individuals.
Mazal tov everyone!
B’simcha,
It gives me great pleasure to celebrate this evening with our Lifetime
Achievement Award Recipients: Ellen and Frank Chmara, Dorothy and
Eddie z"l Eisenman, Jason Mazur, and Elliot and Janice Wyner. Each of
these families has made unique and lasting contributions, to Temple
Ner Tamid. All of us who enjoy Temple Ner Tamid’s unique character
and special role in our lives are indebted to them. Each of these
individuals has modeled for us what it is possible to achieve through
hard work and dedication.
Creating and sustaining a synagogue, with all of the creativity and effort
that it entails is no easy task; many would be deterred from even trying.
But as Moses taught in our Torah, the ability to do great things is within
our reach: “Lo bashamayim hi – It is not in heaven that you should say
‘who among us can go up to the heavens and get it for us…Neither is it
beyond the sea, that you should say, ‘who among us can cross to the
other side of the sea and get it for us…No! the thing is very close to you,
in your mouth and in your heart, to do it!” (Deuteronomy 30)
Tonight’s honorees teach us that even phenomenal achievements are
within our grasp when we devote our minds, hands, and hearts to
service. May their reward match the measure of their contribution, and
may we celebrate together for many years to come!
Mazel Tov!!
Ellen and Frank were married in 1961. They moved to Peabody from New Jersey, where Frank was in the
Army. They chose Peabody because their first criterion was a Conservative Temple in an affordable
community. They moved into their house in January, 1965 and joined the Temple that spring.
Frank, has served the Temple in several capacities. He has been a member of the House Committee,
Chairman of the Religious School Committee, and Co-Chairman of the Adult Education Committee. He was a
member of the Temple Board for many years, Vice President and then President from 1982-1984. Recently,
Frank has been giving presentations on various Jewish Communities throughout the world where he and
Ellen have visited during their travels. Frank was on active duty from 1961-1963 at Fort Monmouth, NJ,
where he was Military Chief of the Radar Repair Branch of the Signal Corps Training School, eventually
rising to the rank of Captain. He received his undergraduate and graduate degrees in Physics from
Worcester Polytechnic Institute and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute respectively and an M.B.A. from
Northeastern University. Professionally, Frank is the owner of Peabody Scientific, a company he founded in
1976. Sailing has been a passion of Frank’s for many years and traveling throughout the world has been an
integral part of his and Ellen’s lives, having visited at least eighty-three countries.
Ellen and Frank were Adult Education Committee co-chairmen at which time the Temple was the first
Synagogue to sponsor the Zamir Chorale and Klezmer for its members. She is a life member of Hadassah and
of Sisterhood, serving as past President for both, In the 2 years of President of Sisterhood, she initiated a
Community Health Day when the entire community could visit and have some health testing; and the grand
Garden Party where the hall was festooned with ribbons and peonies. This fundraiser completely outfitted
our Meat kitchen. In addition, she instituted the Shomer Society where members would house-sit for other
members, while attending funerals of loved ones. She is a Light of Torah awardee. During her years working
for the New England Branch of Women’s League and National Women’s League, she was chosen with 39
other sisterhood members from the entire US and Canada to become National Trainers. She takes great
pride in this. As President of Peabody Hadassah, she was responsible for its wonderful cookbook. Ellen
graduated from Syracuse University on a full Regents Scholarship, based on a competitive exam.
Professionally, Ellen has a very successful career in real estate, working as an Associate in Century 21, and
currently at ReMax Prestige. For a number of years, she was the top agent in Peabody and has received
many awards for exemplary service and successes. She is originally from Troy, NY, where her parents were
kosher caterers
Ellen and Frank have three married children and six grandchildren. Jed is a compliance officer with John
Hancock and his wife, Jessica, is a columnist for the Jewish Journal. Andrea is a teacher at Marian Court
college and her husband, Adam York, is owner of the Kia car dealership in Medford. Their youngest son,
Adam, is an attorney with Verizon and his wife, Stephanie, was until quite recently in charge of real estate
purchase and lease for Computer Science Corporation. The Chmaras are most proud of their grandchildren
and their accomplishments: Joshua (20), Samuel (18), Jordan (17), Tedd (15), Lauren (13), and Joseph (11).
Perpetuation of the Jewish people and love of its heritage and traditions are strong feelings of Ellen and
Frank and they have instilled these in their children and grandchildren. Each Passover, Frank invites the
most recent Bar/Bat Mitzvah to lead the second night Seder so that he/she will feel comfortable and
included in the Haggadah and Jewish peoplehood. Frank and Ellen are very honored to be one of this year’s
Lifetime Achievement recipients and to be affiliated with Temple Ner Tamid.
Dorothy and Eddie (z”l) were married in 1955. They lived in Malden until moving to
Peabody in 1963. Knowing they wanted a conservative congregation and with their oldest
child ready for first grade in Hebrew School, they joined Temple Ner Tamid in 1963, only
four years after the Temple was founded.
Ed (z”l), who passed away in 1988 at the age of 62, was active in what was then known as
the Brotherhood, participating in the annual Auction. He was also a member of the Temple
Board and was active on the Bingo Committee. Outside the Temple, Ed (z”l) was a Shriner
and served a term as President of the local Peabody B’nai B’rith Lodge. Ed (z”l) joined the
Navy at age 19 and was stationed in the United States during World War II. After the
service, he attended Northeastern University, where he earned a Bachelor’s Degree in
Business Administration. Professionally, Ed (z”l) was a salesman for United Art, a
wholesale school supply and stationery company.
Dorothy was a member of the Board, serving on the Executive Committee for several
years as Corresponding Secretary. She was also Editor of the Temple’s Bulletin for about
eight years. As a Life member of the Temple’s Sisterhood, Dorothy served as
Corresponding Secretary and was also given the responsibility of chairing the annual
Torah Fund Dinner for several years. Completing Rabbi Morhaim’s first class, she became
a proud Adult Bat Mitzvah in 1977. Although she had attended Hebrew School as a
youngster, this wonderful experience enabled her to participate in and enjoy services
more fully. In addition to her Temple involvement, Dorothy is a Life Member of Hadassah,
where she served as Historian for several years. Professionally, she worked for sixteen
years in the Personnel Department of the old J.B. Thomas Hospital.
Dorothy and Ed (z”l) have three married children and five grandchildren. Ross, recently
retired after thirty-four years as a government employee, lives in Washington, D.C. with
his wife, Shelley. Stuart, owner of both an internet and retail business, lives in Berlin, MD
with his wife, Susanna. Risa, employed at a hospital near her home, lives in Dracut, MA
with her husband, Michael. Dorothy is very proud of her wonderful grandchildren, Bonnie
(20), David (24), Robert (25), Edward (22), and Jacob (17) - three of whom have already
graduated college.
Dorothy, an avid reader, has always enjoyed volunteering. She is most proud of attending
her children’s and grandchildren’s College graduations. Her most interesting trip was to
Israel, where standing at the Wall was a very emotional experience for her. Dorothy
believes in the adage that “As you sow, so shall you reap’. In other words, whatever one
gives, one will receive back many times over. Dorothy is certainly the embodiment of this
philosophy.
Norma (z”l) and Jason were married in 1968 right here in Temple Ner Tamid with Rabbi Morhaim
officiating. Jason’s mother did not believe he was marrying a Jewish girl because she never heard
of a Sephardic Jew. However, being married by a Rabbi in a Temple convinced her it was OK.
Norma (z”l) and Jason lived in Danvers after being married and joined the Temple in 1975 when
their children needed a Nursery School.
Jason’s first involvement with the Temple was with its Brotherhood. He was a Board Member for
about ten years, was Auction Chairman for four years, and served on the Scholarship Committee
for four years. His Temple involvement included three years as Financial Secretary and four years
as Budget and Finance Chairman, with an additional four years on the Budget Committee. In
addition, he was a member of the Membership, Fund Raising, and Bingo Committees for many
years. Jason was a proud member of the Army Reserves for six years. He received a Business
Degree from Northeastern University and an M.B.A. from University of Massachusetts, Amherst.
For 20 years, he worked for Cabot Corp, first as a Market Analyst and eventually as Accounting
Manager for their Carbon Black division. When his beloved Norma (z”l) died, he left Cabot Corp to
work for Dave Cohen at Atlas Paper Company. In all, Jason has enjoyed working for forty-five
years, but will retire this year when he turns 70 years old. In his spare time, he has been the
Money Manager Volunteer for North Shore Elders and, for the past thirty-five years, he enjoys
playing cards once a month with fellow Temple members, Mark Rudin, Harvey Dragoon, Steve
Ring, and Richie Band. He also tries to play golf whenever he can and does extensive world
traveling.
Norma (z”l), who passed away in 1987, was also very active and involved in Temple life,
especially with its Women’s League arm, where she served two separate terms as President. In
addition, she was very active in Hadassah and at Cohen Hillel Academy, where her boys attended
school and where she eventually became President of Hamishpacha, the school’s Parent-Teacher
Organization.
Norma (z”l) and Jason have three sons and seven grandchildren. Jeffery, a Financial Vice President
lives in Waltham, MA with his wife, Jackie, and their two children, Adam (7) and Raquel (5). Sam,
an Advertising Copywriter, lives in Port Washington, NY with his wife, Jill, and their three children,
Zach (10), Nicole (8), and Emily (4). Danny, a Special Needs teacher in a Hopkinton Middle School,
lives in Westborough, MA with his wife, Kelly, and their 2 children, Maya (4) and Benjamin (9
months). All three Mazur boys were active in the Temple’s USY and all made alliyah to Israel.
The Temple has always been a big part of the Mazurs’ family life. As mentioned above, Norma (z”l)
and Jason were married at the Temple, as was their son, Jeffrey. All three boys and Norma (z”l)
celebrated their Bar or Bat Mitzvah there. Sadly, the Temple was also the place where the family
mourned the passing of Norma (z”l) and her mother, Corine Savy. Jason believes that it is this cycle
of life that has made Temple Ner Tamid so special to him and his family. He feels a Temple is
where families and friends grow together and is proud that Temple Ner Tamid has been there for
him and for many of his friends and other congregants who may have needed its support.
Janice and Elliot were married in 1966. They have been members of the Temple for forty years
since moving to Peabody in 1973. They were recruited by Morty Titelbaum, who came to their
house to discuss membership, and decided to join the Temple so their first child could attend
Nursery School.
Elliot joined the Brotherhood, where he eventually served as Vice President and President (1976-
1978). When asked to come up with a social action program by then-President Moe Sack, he
initiated the Hogan School Party in 1975 with the help of Bill Poires, who had been running the
program for B’nai B’rith. This program has been taking place ever since. During his Brotherhood
tenure, he also helped get guest speakers for the Sunday breakfasts. Elliot has been Temple
President on two different occasions. In addition, he has served as House Chairman, Co-Chair of the
Social Action Committee, and two times as Chairman of the Membership Committee. Elliot’s other
Jewish involvement has been with the B’nai B’rith Topsfield Fair Booth and the Action For Soviet
Jewry.
Elliot has B.S. degree from Worcester Polytechnic Institute and a Ph.D. from Yale University in
Applied Science. He served in the military after Yale from 1969-1973 with stops at Fort Monmouth,
New Jersey, Korea, and the United States Army Natick Labs. Professionally, he worked at Osram
Sylvania until his retirement in 2008. In his spare time, Elliot has been involved in the Explorers
Lifelong Learning Institute, for whom he will soon serve as President. In addition, he loves
challenging Sudoku puzzles, all Boston pro sports, and exploring with his grandchildren. Along with
Janice, he works out at the gym several times a week, travels with Road Scholar, and has enjoyed
trips both in and outside of the United States.
Janice has been active on several Temple committees including the Shomer Society and the Social
Action Committee, on which she served as Chairperson. She was also Women’s League Vice
President and President, during which time she attended several regional meetings and national
conventions. Outside of the Temple, Janice was a member of Hadassah for many years, serving as Co
-Membership Chair for two years. She is also proud of her work at the Spaulding Rehabilitation
Hospital, where she made room visits for ten years and has been honored twice by the Hospital for
her dedication to visiting Jewish patients there. Janice graduated University of Massachusetts,
Amherst and later earned an Associate Degree in 1966 in Gerontology from North Shore
Community College. Professionally, she has worked at North Shore Elder Services for sixteen years
and is currently working part-time as a facilitator of the Caregiver Support Group and as a co-leader
of special workshops.
Janice and Elliot have three sons and four grandchildren. Evan, a Facility Engineering Consultant,
lives in Woodbridge, CT with his wife, Stacey and their four children, Jacob (16), Alex (14), Ari (12),
and Aviva (9). Rob, a Project Manager for Blue Cross Blue Shield, lives in Cambridge and Barry, a
High School music teacher and musical composer, and his fiance , Emilee, live in Queens, NY.
The Wyners’ most memorable Temple experiences include Moe Sack’s Mystery Bus Ride, marching
in a Memorial Day parade, busing to Washington, D.C. to march for Soviet Jewry, and Janice’s
working as secretary in the Temple office with Rabbi Morhaim. Elliot and Janice’s lifelong
philosophy is not to pass judgment of others and to lead by example.
