The High Holy Days at TNT are a rich blend of the traditions ofthe Jewish people and the particular style that has evolved in oursynagogue over the years. A number of innovations will add to theexcitement this year.Tashlich Ceremony at Brooksby Farm in PeabodyOn the first day of Rosh Hashanah, September 29, at 6:00 pm,we will have our annual "Tashlich” ritual. This ceremony is especiallymeaningful for children.“Tashlich” means “you will cast.” Once again, we will gather atthe Brooksby Farm parking lot and walk a short distance to apond, where we will toss bread crumbs into the water as a way ofacting out the verse from the Book of Micah: "And God will castall of their sins into the depths of the sea." It is a lovely walk and amemorable ceremony. Bring some bread with you!Children represent the future of Judaism and our temple. We offerbabysitting and age-appropriate services while the service in themain Sanctuary is underway. Information about the children’sprogram is enclosed in this bulletin. At all times, children must beeither in a supervised program or in the Sanctuary with their adultcaregivers. Allowing them to run free throughout the building canbe unsafe for them and others.Seat Saving: With open seating at all services, we want to befair to all of our worshippers. It is not reasonable to hold anumber of seats for late comers while members who havecome earlier wish to participate in a service. Please cooperatewith the ushers in this matter!Cell Phones: Unless you’re expecting a call from God, pleasesilence or turn off your cell. Moreover, God does not need you totext to communicate, you have a direct line here.Kol Nidre, October 7, 6:30 pm (Note the time!). Please come ontime to hear Cantor Abramowitz sing the traditional Kol Nidreformula. This is the only time in the Jewish calendar when a tallit(prayer shawl) is worn in the evening. At TNT, both men andwomen are welcome to wear a tallit.Yom Kippur Fasting: Exceptions to the Rule. Fasting on YomKippur is the rule for anyone 13 or older, but every rule has exceptions. If you are taking medication, you should continue to take itunless otherwise directed by your doctor. Diabetic patients whoadjust their own medication or insulin, or who fast, may be subjectto serious medical problems. Please take care of yourself!Yizkor Memorial Service, October 8, 11:00 am: Following anold superstition, many of those whose parents are still alive willchoose to leave for the duration of this short service to avoidtempting the “evil eye” by hearing and seeing others mourn fortheir departed. But please be aware that there is no legal requirementto leave–in fact, we suggest that everyone stay for Yizkorso that the entire congregation can offer support to one another. The concluding Neilah Service, at about 6:00 pm, is compellingand spiritually charged. We invite entire families (grandparents, parents, children of all ages) to come up and stand facing the openark for a few moments of private prayer and reflection. Many familiestake advantage of this special opportunity. At about 7:00 pm, each child present will receive a special lightstick which they can hold as an accompaniment to the Rabbi'sHavdalah candle. The children love this. We cordially invite them– and anyone else who owns a Shofar – to come up to the bimahat to blow Tekiah Gedolah. We call this the “big band” sound!Congregational Break the FastImmediately following the Yom Kippur service, there will be lightrefreshments in the Social Hall. All are welcome. No reservationsare required.Erev Tavshilin On Rosh Hashanah or any Yom Tov falling on aweekday, cooking is permitted, but only to prepare food for thatparticular day. On Shabbat it is forbidden to cook. Therefore, preparingfood for a Shabbat that follows a Yom Tov presents a difficulty. This year, Rosh Hashanah, Sukkot, Shemini Atzeret andSimchat Torah lead directly into Shabbat. To allow cooking forShabbat without violating the laws of Yom Tov, Jewish law sanctionsa method of combining the cooking of Yom Tov and Shabbat. This procedure allows for cooking for Shabbat on a FridayYom Tov by beginning the cooking before the beginning of YomTov and in anticipation of Shabbat.1. Before Yom Tov begins, before the Wednesday evening candlelighting time, take two prepared foods, customarily abaked food (e.g. matza) and a cooked food (e.g. hard –cookedegg or a piece of cooked chicken or fish).2. Recite the Bracha:Baruch attah adoni, eloheynu melekh ha’olam, asherkiddu shanu bemitzvotav vetsivanu al mitsvat eruv.3. Recite a declaration in a language you understand that cookingfor Shabbat was begun before, and will be completed onYom Tov:“By means of the mixture (eruv), we are permitted tobake, cook, warm, kindle lights, and make all the necessary preparationsfor Shabbat during the Festival (yom tov), we and all wholive in this city.”4. Set aside the two foods for eating on Shabbat day. The cookingfor Shabbat may now be completed on Yom Tov.Preparation of a flame for Rosh Hashanah or Yom TovKindling a new fire is not permitted on Rosh Hashanah or YomTov; however, the use of an existing fire for cooking or other purposesis permitted. To allow you to light candles for the secondday of Rosh Hashanah or Yom Tov (Thursday evening), ensureyou have a fire burning before the beginning of the first day(Weds. before sunset) that will continue to burn at least until afterdark on Thursday. For example: A burning candle that lasts morethan 25 hours, or a pilot light on a gas stove (not a gas range withan electric starter).Candle lighting for Rosh Hashanah or Yom Tov (Day 1)1. Light the candles at least 18 minutes before sunset.2. Recite two Brakhot:Baruch attah adoni, eloheynu melekh ha’olam, asherkiddushanu bemitzvotav vetsivanu lihadlik ner shel yom tov.Baruch attah adoni, eloheynu melekh ha’olam,Shehechayanu veklyemanu vehiggianu lazeman hazeh. If you have questions about the laws of Yom Tov,please consult a Rabbi.Adapted from USCJ & Rabbinical Assembly Luah Hashanah 5772

Cantor Stephen AbramowitzThe music of TeshuvahIf we polled various congregants of any synagogue, asking them to provide an honest answer to the question,“Why do you attend synagogue on the High Holidays?”,we would surely obtain a bevy of responses.“Tickets come with membership.”“We get to see friends we haven’t seen all year.”“I want to attend Yizkor for my _____.”“The Rabbi’s sermons are fantastic!”“If we don’t go we lose the seats next year.”“I would feel guilty if I didn’t go.”But how many would say, “I am going to bridge theDays of Awe (Yamim Nora’im) and repentance throughmusic”? I would offer that music plays a central rolein helping us through the High Holidays, and leading usto make Teshuvah. Is it a coincidence that the Hebrew word “Teshuvah”,commonly translated as repentance, comes from theroot meaning “to return”? After all, so many people doreturn to Temple Ner Tamid each year on the YamimNora’im, whether they come to shul virtually everyShabbat, only for USY, Men’s Club, or Sisterhood-ledservices, or just on Rosh HaShanah and Yom Kippur. The point is, everyone is there; let’s see if we can createsomething more meaningful.I begin with Rosh Hashanah. On Erev Rosh HaShanah, when many attend family dinners, we introduce the triumphantmusic of G-d’s majesty, in major keys. Themusic itself can even mimic the sharp, undulating tonesof a shofar. Listen specifically to the octave-jumpingmelody at Tik’u Vachodesh Shofar, literally “sound theshofar on the New Moon” (page 33 in our Machzor). Ican almost picture a royal carpet being unfurled as theshofar beckons G-d’s arrival. During the Kiddush (page56) I will vocally attempt to recreate the 9 shofar blastsat the word “T’ruah”. Listen for it!On Rosh HaShanah mornings, we encounter the“Unetaneh Tokef” (page 282), which features the “Whoshall live and who shall die?” passage. I prepare a settingwhich delivers this message in dramatic and sad(minor key) tones. As we stand in judgement before G-d, we are more likely to cower or cry than curry favor. But when we proclaim (at the bottom of page 284) that“You, G-d, are sovereign of all–living and everlasting”,we ultimately return to the triumphant major sound ofRosh HaShanah evenings. As we turn to Yom Kippur, we are reassuring G-d thatwe will amend our ways, and pleading with G-d to sealus in the “Good Book” for the coming year. We startwith the Kol Nidre prayer (page 398), merely a legaldocument annulling our vows from last Yom Kippur, sothat G-d can accept our new vows. But the music is sopowerful that it has become an iconic prayer for cantors, congregants, and Johnny Mathis alike. (It’s true:Johnny recorded Kol Nidre at the height of his popularity.)Actually, this prayer incorporates a 13-note scale, including major, minor, and a musical mode so undefinable,my cantorial school colleagues nicknamed it“Ralph”.Yom Kippur morning adds several utterances of thecommunal confessional “Vidui” , the repetitive declarations“Al Cheit Shechatanu” (we missed the mark, orsinned), and services of remembrance (Yizkor, page568), recalling the role of the Kohein Gadol (Avodah, page 638), and heralding our fallen martyrs (Eileh Ezkerah, page 733). While the “Al Cheits” carry a repetitive, minor key mantra-like chant, we surprisingly switch to amajor key to synthesize our confessions through the“Vidui” (aye, yai yai yai yai...). I manage to generate asense of catharsis and release when we pound ourchests and admit that we have spoken slanderously orcommitted abomination, even with a simple tune. While the various special services incorporate many minorkey melodies, the darkest and starkest music is reservedfor the Martyrology. The music nearly evokestears just thinking about it.Finally, I turn to the frantic pleading and ebullient endingof the “N’ilah” service, where the gates are quicklyclosing. The N’ilah Amidah (page 776) carries a uniquemelodic combination of major and minor sequences thatwe only encounter once a year. I try to chant this supposed“MiSinai” (from Mount Sinai?) melody with extrafear, trembling and awe. After completing Havdallah,we reach our final destination: declarations of G-d’s one-ness, sovereignty and G-d is G-d (7 times!), followedby one long shofar blast (page 828). Though we areexhausted, starving, and “prayed out”, these declarationscarry a desperate, fervent and lofty kind of gravitas.Has our teshuvah been effective? If these words–and music–don’t reach G-d, I don’t know what will.Whatever reason you have for attending services on theHigh Holidays, I hope that the music, in some way, brings new meaning to your “teshuvah” to Temple NerTamid.

President, Scott FeinsteinShalom! From: Allen Talewsky, Ritual ChairShalom,I hope everyone had a terrific summer. Temple Ner Tamidhas been busy over the summer, with various events suchas a musical Shabbat and hot dog Shabbat, planning for theupcoming year at the Religious School, and planning forthe High Holidays. We're pleased to have Rabbi Zukerhere in our community. While her official start date as ourRabbi is October 1, she's already very involved in the religiouslife here at TNT. I've met with Rabbi Zuker on manyoccasions, and continue to be very proud of the work theRabbi Search Committee did. We found a first-class Rabbiand I'm so excited about working with her over the nextyear. As I really get into my second year as your President, Iagain get very excited about all the great things we're goingto do together this year. Our Temple community is asstrong as ever. There are so many people that love TempleNer Tamid and feel very passionately about our community.I'm one of those people. One of my goals this year is toshare this love and passion with as many people as possible. Why do I love Temple Ner Tamid so much? It's notthe building. It's all of you. We're an extended family.Like any family we may be a bit dysfunctional, but TempleNer Tamid will always be here for me and me for TempleNer Tamid.I truly want to engage every single member of Temple NerTamid to participate in all manner of activities. While servicesare an important part of Temple life, they are not theonly part. If you see something that catches your interest, give it a try. As I tell my son "try it – you'll like it". Thereare also many ways that you can all help out. During theHigh Holidays you'll hear more about what you can do as avolunteer to help strengthen our community. In the spirit of the coming Holidays, if there's anything I'vedone over the past year that hurt or offended you, I humblyask for your understanding and your forgiveness.L'Shanah Tovah,Scott Feinsteinpres@templenertamid.orgLulav & Etrog SetsWould like to order your ownLulav & Etrog set for $40.00?Please let Beth know by September 9th.Weekday minyan services are held in the Milton Cohenchapel Monday and Thursday mornings at 7:30am andSunday morning at 9:00 am.
