The High Holy Days at TNT are a rich blend of the traditions ofthe Jewish people and the particular style that has evolved in oursynagogue over the years. A number of innovations will add to theexcitement this year.Tashlich Ceremony at Brooksby Farm in PeabodyOn the first day of Rosh Hashanah, September 29, at 6:00 pm,we will have our annual "Tashlich” ritual. This ceremony is especiallymeaningful for children.“Tashlich” means “you will cast.” Once again, we will gather atthe Brooksby Farm parking lot and walk a short distance to apond, where we will toss bread crumbs into the water as a way ofacting out the verse from the Book of Micah: "And God will castall of their sins into the depths of the sea." It is a lovely walk and amemorable ceremony. Bring some bread with you!Children represent the future of Judaism and our temple. We offerbabysitting and age-appropriate services while the service in themain Sanctuary is underway. Information about the children’sprogram is enclosed in this bulletin. At all times, children must beeither in a supervised program or in the Sanctuary with their adultcaregivers. Allowing them to run free throughout the building canbe unsafe for them and others.Seat Saving: With open seating at all services, we want to befair to all of our worshippers. It is not reasonable to hold anumber of seats for late comers while members who havecome earlier wish to participate in a service. Please cooperatewith the ushers in this matter!Cell Phones: Unless you’re expecting a call from God, pleasesilence or turn off your cell. Moreover, God does not need you totext to communicate, you have a direct line here.Kol Nidre, October 7, 6:30 pm (Note the time!). Please come ontime to hear Cantor Abramowitz sing the traditional Kol Nidreformula. This is the only time in the Jewish calendar when a tallit(prayer shawl) is worn in the evening. At TNT, both men andwomen are welcome to wear a tallit.Yom Kippur Fasting: Exceptions to the Rule. Fasting on YomKippur is the rule for anyone 13 or older, but every rule has exceptions. If you are taking medication, you should continue to take itunless otherwise directed by your doctor. Diabetic patients whoadjust their own medication or insulin, or who fast, may be subjectto serious medical problems. Please take care of yourself!Yizkor Memorial Service, October 8, 11:00 am: Following anold superstition, many of those whose parents are still alive willchoose to leave for the duration of this short service to avoidtempting the “evil eye” by hearing and seeing others mourn fortheir departed. But please be aware that there is no legal requirementto leave–in fact, we suggest that everyone stay for Yizkorso that the entire congregation can offer support to one another. The concluding Neilah Service, at about 6:00 pm, is compellingand spiritually charged. We invite entire families (grandparents, parents, children of all ages) to come up and stand facing the openark for a few moments of private prayer and reflection. Many familiestake advantage of this special opportunity. At about 7:00 pm, each child present will receive a special lightstick which they can hold as an accompaniment to the Rabbi'sHavdalah candle. The children love this. We cordially invite them– and anyone else who owns a Shofar – to come up to the bimahat to blow Tekiah Gedolah. We call this the “big band” sound!Congregational Break the FastImmediately following the Yom Kippur service, there will be lightrefreshments in the Social Hall. All are welcome. No reservationsare required.Erev Tavshilin On Rosh Hashanah or any Yom Tov falling on aweekday, cooking is permitted, but only to prepare food for thatparticular day. On Shabbat it is forbidden to cook. Therefore, preparingfood for a Shabbat that follows a Yom Tov presents a difficulty. This year, Rosh Hashanah, Sukkot, Shemini Atzeret andSimchat Torah lead directly into Shabbat. To allow cooking forShabbat without violating the laws of Yom Tov, Jewish law sanctionsa method of combining the cooking of Yom Tov and Shabbat. This procedure allows for cooking for Shabbat on a FridayYom Tov by beginning the cooking before the beginning of YomTov and in anticipation of Shabbat.1. Before Yom Tov begins, before the Wednesday evening candlelighting time, take two prepared foods, customarily abaked food (e.g. matza) and a cooked food (e.g. hard –cookedegg or a piece of cooked chicken or fish).2. Recite the Bracha:Baruch attah adoni, eloheynu melekh ha’olam, asherkiddu shanu bemitzvotav vetsivanu al mitsvat eruv.3. Recite a declaration in a language you understand that cookingfor Shabbat was begun before, and will be completed onYom Tov:“By means of the mixture (eruv), we are permitted tobake, cook, warm, kindle lights, and make all the necessary preparationsfor Shabbat during the Festival (yom tov), we and all wholive in this city.”4. Set aside the two foods for eating on Shabbat day. The cookingfor Shabbat may now be completed on Yom Tov.Preparation of a flame for Rosh Hashanah or Yom TovKindling a new fire is not permitted on Rosh Hashanah or YomTov; however, the use of an existing fire for cooking or other purposesis permitted. To allow you to light candles for the secondday of Rosh Hashanah or Yom Tov (Thursday evening), ensureyou have a fire burning before the beginning of the first day(Weds. before sunset) that will continue to burn at least until afterdark on Thursday. For example: A burning candle that lasts morethan 25 hours, or a pilot light on a gas stove (not a gas range withan electric starter).Candle lighting for Rosh Hashanah or Yom Tov (Day 1)1. Light the candles at least 18 minutes before sunset.2. Recite two Brakhot:Baruch attah adoni, eloheynu melekh ha’olam, asherkiddushanu bemitzvotav vetsivanu lihadlik ner shel yom tov.Baruch attah adoni, eloheynu melekh ha’olam,Shehechayanu veklyemanu vehiggianu lazeman hazeh. If you have questions about the laws of Yom Tov,please consult a Rabbi.Adapted from USCJ & Rabbinical Assembly Luah Hashanah 5772
