SOLAR WATER HEATING<br />
Solar water heating systems use solar energy from the sun to create warm water. The thermal energy produced<br />
from the collectors is gathered and stored in a well-insulated tank. A conventional boiler or immersion heater is<br />
then used to heat the water further, or to provide hot water when solar energy is in short supply.<br />
Solar water heating systems will typically generate 60% of a household’s annual hot water usage, when<br />
installed on a southeast / southwest facing roof without obstruction to the sun. Typically a domestic<br />
installation requires 2-5 M 2 of roof area. The solar collectors are available in two types; Flat Plate or<br />
Evacuated Tube Collectors.<br />
The <strong>Renewable</strong> Heat Incentive (RHI) due to launch early spring 2014, represents a big opportunity for<br />

INTRODUCTION TO SOLAR PV<br />
Solar Photovoltaic (or Solar PV as it is commonly known) works by utilising the sun to generate electricity. It relies on daylight (rather than<br />
radiation) to generate power through the use of photovoltaic cells within roof-mounted collectors (modules).<br />
The electricity produced by Solar PV can be used to drive any appliance that is powered by electricity. An inverter converts the DC current<br />
into usable AC current that can be used as power.<br />
The location of the PV modules is vitally important as they must receive the maximum amount of daylight possible. The best location for a<br />
PV solar collector is on a south-facing roof with a pitch between 30 and 40 degrees. (South-East or South-West roofs are still suitable<br />
but there would be a reduction in yield by 5-10%.) It is also not advisable to install them where surrounding buildings or trees may cast<br />
shadows. A site survey is strongly recommended to establish whether Solar PV is suitable.<br />
The modules have a power warranty of 25 years, and with no moving parts are virtually maintenance free.<br />
FEED IN TARIFFS (FITS)<br />
The Feed-in Tariffs (FITs) scheme was introduced on 1 April 2010, under powers in the <strong>Energy</strong> Act 2008. Through the use of FITs, DECC<br />
hopes to encourage deployment of additional small-scale (less than 5MW) low-carbon electricity generation, particularly by organisations,<br />
businesses, communities and individuals that have not traditionally engaged in the electricity market.<br />
This will allow many people to invest in small-scale low-carbon electricity, in return for a guaranteed payment from an electricity<br />
supplier of their choice for the electricity they generate and use as well as a guaranteed payment for unused surplus electricity they<br />
export back to the grid.<br />
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF FITS?<br />
There are 3 financial benefits from FITs:<br />
1. Generation tariff - the electricity supplier of your choice will pay you for each unit (kilowatt) of electricity you generate<br />
2. Export tariff - if you generate electricity that you do not use yourself, you can export it back to the grid. You will be paid for exporting<br />
electricity as an additional payment (on top of the generation tariff)<br />
3. <strong>Energy</strong> bill savings - you will not have to import as much electricity from your supplier because a proportion of what you use you will<br />
have generated yourself, you will see this impact on your electricity bill.<br />
For the latest tariffs please refer to the Government website www.decc.gov.uk<br />
Solar PV systems also give the owner reduced electricity bills because the system will supply some or all of your power rather than<br />
mains electricity. At times of low generation, ie at night, electricity will automatically be taken from the national grid.<br />
MCS (MICROGENERATION CERTIFICATION SCHEME) ACCREDITATION<br />
Solar PV systems must be installed by MCS (Microgeneration Certification Scheme) accredited installers.<br />
The Microgeneration Certification Scheme is an independent scheme that certifies microgeneration products and installers in<br />
accordance with consistent standards. It is designed to evaluate microgeneration products and installers against robust criteria<br />
providing greater protection for consumers.<br />
kWp is the industry definition for sizing of a solar PV system.<br />
1kWp generates between 800-900 kWh of electricity each year depending on the efficiency of the solar PV modules.<br />
