Giving Back Matters
Thank you for your generosity to Delnor this year. We are grateful to you and the hundreds of donors we count as friends, for
supporting the mission of the Health System. We deeply appreciate your part in providing compassionate, excellent health care
to our growing community.
As we look at the three stories highlighted in this year’s annual giving report, it is evident that Delnor-Community Health Care
Foundation continues to be supported by individuals who are passionate about giving back and paying it forward.
Anna, Fred and Mary are just a few examples of those who support Delnor’s mission of providing excellence in health care and
promoting lifelong wellness in the communities we serve.
All of us will seek medical care at some point in our lives: whether for the delivery of a new baby, treatment for a chronic illness,
or emergency care for a life-threatening condition.
Many of us will look for healthcare guidance even before we need it as disease prevention and maintenance become
increasingly important to maintaining a healthy life. Whatever your individualized need, we are committed to ensuring that
Delnor is prepared to offer you the highest quality of healthcare services close to home.
This year the Health System opened the doors of our new Center for Breast Health, a high-tech, sophisticated center that offers
our patients comprehensive screening, diagnostic and treatment options, including digital mammography — testing that is
currently available at only eight percent of all hospitals in the nation.
We also broke ground on our largest hospital addition ever, an expansion that will ensure that all Delnor inpatient hospital
rooms become private patient rooms—something that research has indicated is better not only for patient comfort, but also for
better patient care.
We continue to look to the future, where our new space and expansion of services will better meet you and your family’s needs.
Our current campaign, Sophisticated Medicine—Close to Home, supports that future. You will be hearing more about that effort
in the months to come.
Thank you for being one of the donors listed in this report, who are helping continue the Delnor tradition of excellent, patientcentered
care in the Fox Valley.
Sincerely,
David C. Brown
Delnor-Community Health Care Foundation

My Life
Geneva resident Anna Harmon long struggled with the
challenge of chronic back pain. “Even though I am
active and athletic, I have always had back issues,” she says,
recalling a back surgery years ago to address the problem.
Because she was familiar with her pain, she knew this time
was different when it suddenly worsened last fall.
At her initial appointment with Dr. Michael Fremgen, her
family physician and a physician on staff at Delnor, Anna
indicated that she was expecting the worst. “I told him I felt
I needed an MRI and I that needed surgery,” she says. “I know
my body and I knew that this time things were not good.”
What she didn’t know at the time was how much worse her
condition would get before it got better. Tests showed that
Anna had severely ruptured several discs in her back. She
met with her doctors, Delnor orthopedic surgeon Dr. Craig
Popp, M.D. and Delnor neurosurgeon Dr. John Brayton,
M.D. to discuss surgical options.
Anna’s back couldn’t wait for the surgery to be scheduled.
The evening after her diagnosis, in tremendous pain and
barely able to walk, she got up in the night and collapsed.
“I told my husband that I was beginning to be paralyzed,
and to call an ambulance,” says Anna. Little did she know
at the time, but her original medical assessment was uncannily
correct. Once she got to Delnor and her pain was managed,
Anna and the medical team realized that she was continuing
to lose sensation in one of her legs.
Anna’s medical team feared they would have to do exploratory
surgery to reveal the cause until another MRI solved the puzzle.
“They discovered that my spine had collapsed slightly due to
a stress fracture we hadn’t known anything about,” says Anna.
“Because of that fracture, my spine was severely compressing
my sciatic nerve. Without surgery, we couldn’t be sure if it was
severed or not, or if I would ever be able to walk again.”
Anna, who was just 38, says that she has never been so
afraid in her life. It was that fear, coupled with an intense
trust, that she says prompted her to ask Delnor to wait for
her two surgeons Dr. Popp and Dr. Brayton — the only ones
she wanted to perform the critical surgery that would decide
the fate of her leg. “I asked them, ‘can I have you both?’”
Dr. John Brayton, Anna Harmon and Dr. Craig Popp
The physicians agreed to come to the hospital right away and
conduct the surgery together. “At that point I didn’t even know
if insurance would cover that. I was more afraid of what they
would find, but I trusted them to handle that,” says Anna.
The physician team removed the herniated section of Anna’s
spine but did not fuse it together. “They thought I would have
had a lot of arthritis as a result,” she says. “I may still need to
have that surgery in the future but they gave me a chance
to potentially avoid it.”
Most importantly, the surgeons found that her sciatic nerve was
not severed, only cut — which saved Anna the use of her leg.
She remained in a hospital bed in her home until January, was
using a walker by February, and was driving on her own
in March. In August of this year, she began her exercise regime
once again. “It has been long and difficult, and my life has
been forever changed,” she says. “I am still in therapy and do
have a drop foot and wear a brace, but I am very encouraged
that my leg will continue to come back.”
That is good news for this active mom of three small children
with a busy career. “My life came to a shattering halt, but I
have learned that everything happens for a reason,” says
Anna. “I have a new perspective.”
Part of that is a renewed respect for the medical care available
right in her own backyard. “My physicians literally saved my
leg and Delnor was instrumental in returning its function,”
says Anna.
She remembers nights her husband stayed at her side past
visiting hours because of an accommodating nursing staff,
and the special case nurse that Delnor assigned to check in
on her at home. “I couldn’t have gotten better care anywhere,
even at a bigger hospital downtown.”
In gratitude for that care and for the second chance at the
active life she once took for granted, Anna recently made
a gift to the Delnor Foundation in honor of physicians Popp
and Brayton. “I want them to know how much I appreciate
all they did,” says Anna. “With their care, and with that of
the Delnor team, I made it through to the other side.”

to help, is also your gift to the whole of the world.”
You Left Behind
Almost fifty years ago St. Charles resident Fred Norris
graduated from college on a Friday and married his
college sweetheart Ginny the very next day. “Back then, we
were not in much of a hurry,” he laughs. Fred and Ginny
Norris went on to share 47 years together, adding three
children and three grandchildren to their family along the way.
It was only after Ginny died at age 67 that the family who
spent so many happy years together, was forced to learn how
to live without its matriarch. In order to do so, Fred focused
on finding a way to keep his wife’s memory alive.
“I wanted to give a gift to the hospital that would represent
the many hours she spent volunteering,” he says. “And when
I thought of the Delnor Auxiliary, I realized that her active
involvement in that group was one of the most important
aspects of her life.”
Ginny spent her life giving back to the community she lived
in, including volunteering as a Brownie mom, in her children’s
schools, and at the hospital. But it was her efforts as part of
the Delnor Auxiliary that Fred says was her special passion.
“She poured herself into the hospital once the kids were all in
school,” he remembers. “She was membership chair, chair of
the Charity Ball and eventually president,” he says.
Even Fred has fond memories of Delnor Auxiliary work. “You
don’t really know what it means to be an Auxiliary member
until you are married to one of them,” he says with a laugh.
He recalls working with other Auxiliary
spouses to decorate and cleanup the sites of
the Auxiliary annual Charity Ball.
“One year we started working at 1 a.m.
setting up at Pheasant Run once another
event had ended,” says Fred. “After we were
done we went home and took a shower, then
came back to party the rest of the evening. I
hadn’t felt that tired, or that alive, since my
college days!”
It was an energy that Ginny had felt as
well. “She just loved the camaraderie…girls
call it sisterhood…but it was a very close
relationship with all of those ladies who worked together for
the good of Delnor and the community,” says Fred. “I have
never seen such energy. None of them thought twice about
the amount of time they put in because they were so energized
by what they were doing as a team.”
Currently, the Delnor Auxiliary fundraising goal is to raise one
million dollars in support of Delnor’s digital mammography
program. At the same time that Fred was considering his
memorial gift for Ginny, the hospital was opening a new
state-of-the-art Center for Breast Health that would
incorporate those digital mammography services.
“It just seemed like the perfect time — I had a phenomenal
opportunity to add to the Auxiliary’s support of breast health
services at Delnor, and to make Ginny part of this new center,”
he says. Fred decided to gift the Center for Breast Health with
an inspiring art glass wall for its lobby in Ginny’s name.
“It is for Ginny and for all of those ladies who spent, and
continue to spend, so many volunteer hours at the hospital,”
says Fred. “It is dedicated to all of them; they are such an
important part of the Delnor family.”
Fred and his family watched as the art glass wall, designed by
an artist in Arizona, went through many conceptions before
its completion. “It was wonderful to watch it come into reality,
both the wall and the entire breast center concept,” he says.
“Even though our part in it is just a small amenity, we hope that
it will help the women who visit the Center
for Breast Health feel calmer when they
are dealing with apprehension.”
And he says that the gift of the wall,
bearing Ginny’s name, makes it possible
to keep her memory alive. “We want to
make sure as a family that she is not
forgotten,” says Fred. “You are only
gone when you are not remembered. This
makes it possible for her grandkids and
great grandkids to go there someday and
see that she left her fingerprints on the
hospital.”

Two Made Giving
A Part of Life
JANE
Eighty-five-year old St.
Charles resident Jane
Peterson still remembers the
day when she was just four
and her mother brought her
newborn sister home to join
the family. “I was excited
about having a sister and
was ready to play, so I was
a little disappointed that
she was so little,” says Jane.
“But my father told me not
to worry; baby Mary would
grow up.”
What happened was that the girls grew up together. Neither
married, but they spent their adult lives sharing the same
house, the same place of employment and one unique
friendship. The two were so similar that their mailman wasn’t
sure who was Mary and who was Jane. “We never fought,
which makes for a sound friendship,” says Jane.
Supported by each other, they built their intertwined lives on
hard work and hands-on philanthropy. Even though they
worked long hours together at State & Harris Bank in St.
Charles from 1951 to 1989, the two found time to care
for their mother—who passed away when they were in their
40s—as well as other aging relatives. They spent hours baking
thousands of cookies each holiday season that were given
away to friends and neighbors, and were devoted members
of Bethlehem Lutheran Church in St. Charles where their
grandparents were charter members.
They didn’t stop their giving there. Each holiday season they
sat down together and wrote out checks to local organizations
they felt compelled to support. “It is just one of those things,”
says Jane. “We were always taught to share. It was part of our
upbringing.”
That philosophy, taught to them when they were children, was
something they continued as adults. “The way we both felt was
that if you have it, you should share it,” says Jane. “To both of
us it seemed the natural thing to do.”
Delnor was a recipient of the sisters’ generosity over the years,
receiving annual financial gifts supporting both the hospital
and its Senior Vitality program. The tradition started when
the sisters were working at State Bank and chose to support
Delnor through its payroll-giving program, which automatically
transferred earmarked donations from their accounts.
For both women, choosing to support Delnor was an easy
choice. “We went to the spring Senior Vitality meetings each
spring and I took the Senior Vitality seated exercise course,”
says Jane. “I started first and then Mary joined me.”
Both had been patients at Delnor as well. Most recently
Jane was hospitalized for a viral infection and pneumonia
that nearly took her life. “I can’t say enough about the care
I received then,” says Jane. “To have such a high quality
hospital right here in our community is so important.”
Mary too was a patient at Delnor. She underwent a successful
angioplasty at the hospital while in her 70s; but while
recovering from a similar procedure in May passed away at
the age of 80. In her will, she left a sizable financial gift to
the hospital and the Senior Vitality program, continuing the
tradition she and her sister had followed — but this time in a
larger fashion.
The loss of her sister, a life-long partner and best friend, is
a loss that Jane is still grappling with. “She was a good kid,
Mary was,” she says. “She was so good for me, and I think I
was good for her as well. I only hope that I can follow in her
footsteps and continue to give the donations that help places
like Delnor help others.”
Even after Mary’s death, that mission of generosity still has
life. Mary’s liver and kidneys were donated to a medical
program, and Jane has given much of her sister’s furniture
and belongings away to those who need them, both in her
family and the community at large. “I’m continuing to do what
I can.”

LivingWell Honorable Mention
Delnor-Community Health
Care Foundation launched
LivingWell Cancer Resource
Center after several years of
working toward the vision to
provide supportive resources
for people in our region living
with cancer.
LivingWell recently celebrated
a very successful first year of
operations. Since September
of 2005, LivingWell staff,
board, volunteers, and many
generous community members
have worked diligently to
provide important support
and educational resources for
those in the Fox Valley region
living with cancer. Services are
offered to these individuals,
as well as their families and
friends, free of charge. The
vision is to instill knowledge,
optimism and inspiration in
those living with cancer.
The listing of donors on the
following pages represents
those who designated gifts to
LivingWell during FY06. We
Where Your Money Goes . . .
The wonderful generosity of our donors is truly appreciated. Your gifts contribute substantially to the health
and wellness of our community and we are most grateful!
Delnor-Community Health Care Foundation is committed to honoring donor intentions. You can be assured
that when you direct a gift to a specific purpose, your money funds the program or project you choose. The
chart above shows where you and others directed gifts made to the Foundation between September 1, 2005
and August 31, 2006.
The Foundation uses unrestricted gifts and income from investments to fund valuable programs in our
community. Last year, the Foundation provided $300,000 to help launch LivingWell Cancer Resource
Center and a $25,000 grant to Tri-Cities Health Partnership to help meet the health care needs of our most
vulnerable citizens.
Thank you for the trust you have placed in Delnor-Community Health Care Foundation and for your
generous investment in the health and wellness of your community.
Delnor-Community Health Care Foundation
is committed to keeping each donor informed. As a charter of best practice in the field of development
and fundraising, we ascribe to the ethics and standards presented in A Donor Bill of Rights.
A Donor Bill of Rights
Philanthropy is based on voluntary action for the common good. It is a tradition of giving and sharing
that is primary to the quality of life. To assure that philanthropy merits the respect and trust of the
general public, and that donors and prospective donors can have full confidence in the not-for-profit
organizations and causes they are asked to support, we declare that all donors have these rights:
n To be informed of the organization’s mission, of the way the organization intends
to use donated resources, and of its capacity to use donations effectively for their intended purposes.
n To be informed of the identity of those serving on the organization’s governing board, and to expect
the board to exercise prudent judgment in its stewardship responsibilities.
n To have access to the organization’s most recent financial statements.
n To be assured their gifts will be used for the purposes for which they were given.
n To receive appropriate acknowledgement and recognition.
n To be assured that information about their donations is handled with respect and with confidentiality to
the extent provided by law.
n To expect that all relationships with individuals representing organizations of interest to the donor will be
professional in nature.
n To be informed whether those seeking donations are volunteers, employees of the organization or
hired solicitors.
n To have the opportunity for their names to be deleted from mailing lists that an organization may
intend to share.
“There are those whose lives
Quietly touching one heart,
who in turn, touches another.
Reaching out to ends further
Than they would ever know.”
