care. The government, regulatory agencies, health care providers and insurance 

companies have collaborated to develop resources such as the Hospital 

Compare and State of Illinois websites to help you be an informed consumer 

of medical services. 

At Delnor, we embrace these important initiatives. We also want you to know that 

quality was a primary focus of ours well before the recent public attention. From 

the board of directors, to physicians, to hospital leadership and staff – Delnor’s longstanding 

commitment to quality extends to every level of the organization and 

impacts everything we do. 

I’m proud to say that Delnor has been a leader in setting bold aims in quality 

improvement and in adopting evidence-based medicine and proven best 

practices that make the latest advances in care available to our patients. Our 

board’s leadership of quality has been recognized by the Institute for Healthcare 

Improvement as a national example for others to follow. We also led the way in 

public accountability by becoming one of the first hospitals in Illinois to publish 

quality results on our website. 

To gain further insight into quality, Delnor recently held focus groups and conducted 

a survey to find out what’s most important to our patients and the community 

about a hospital experience. What we learned is that they often describe quality 

based on such factors as how they were treated by doctors and whether nurses 

focused on their comfort and well-being. Hospital leaders and staff welcomed 

this feedback and are using it along with important clinical standards of quality 

to guide how they provide care and service.

Delnor has a deep organizational commitment to quality and to meeting 

the health care needs of the community. That’s why we conducted a 

survey of area residents and interviewed scores of patients to find out how 

they define a quality hospital experience. Among the top priorities that 

emerged were having highly skilled physicians and nurses and placing 

an emphasis on patient safety. Fortunately for former patient Marlene 

Pawlowski, those are strengths for Delnor – as she quickly learned during 

a life-threatening illness. 

“I came to Delnor after coming down with 

a very severe infection. They were able 

to quickly determine what was wrong 

and put together a team of doctors and 

staff who treated me for over a month 

in the ICU. Thanks to their care 

I overcame the infection and 

made a full recovery. I truly 

believe they saved my life.”

f it hadn’t been for 

“IDelnor, I wouldn’t be 

alive today,” says Marlene 

Pawlowski of St. Charles, 

reflecting on her experience 

with a deadly super 

bug named Clostridium 

difficile (also called C. diff). 

When Pawlowski contracted 

the infection, she became 

seriously ill and was rushed 

to Delnor’s Emergency 

Department. “My husband, 

Paul, and I were amazed at 

how quickly the ER doctor 

diagnosed what I had and 

brought in a team of medical 

specialists to care for 

me. I wound up spending 

33 days in the Intensive 

Care Unit and another 

week in a regular patient 

room,” says Pawlowski. 

To beat the infection, 

doctors performed surgery 

and helped her overcome 

multi-system organ failure. 

They also cured a bloodclotting 

disorder that has 

a high fatality rate. After 

weeks of recovery and 

rehabilitation, Pawlowski 

returned home and made 

a remarkable recovery. 

“With all the complications 

I had, my physicians did an 

incredible job.” 

Expert Care 

In addition to the quality 

and expertise of the medical 

staff, Pawlowski was 

also impressed by Delnor’s 

nursing care. “The nurses 

were better than anywhere 

else I have ever been. They 

were very compassionate 

and responsive – both 

to me and to Paul. And 

that’s so important when 

you’re in the hospital for 

such a long time. From the 

moment I arrived, everything 

about my experience 

made us feel like I was getting 

the best possible care.

Project Zero 

For Delnor, there’s more 

to the story, as infections 

like C. diff can often be pre- 

vented. Through an organization-wide 

initiative called 

Project Zero, the hospital 

has implemented aggressive 

measures to help patients 

avoid these illnesses, and 

with significant success. 

Pawlowski praises the effort, 

saying, “It’s gratifying to 

hear what Delnor has done 

because I know firsthand 

how devastating serious 

infections can be.” n

Delnor’s nursing team is 

conducting groundbreaking 

international research 

examining workplace 

relationships in hospitals. 

The research marks the 

first time the same survey 

instrument has been used 

to study this issue in different

“The findings are helping us 

identify ways we can further 

strengthen Delnor’s culture 

of collaboration between 

nurses and doctors,” says 

Linda Steffens, RN, senior 

research analyst, “and 

that’s important because 

it’s well documented that 

positive relationships 

among caregivers improve 

patient outcomes.” Delnor 

nurses presented their 

results to peers from across 

the country at the American 

Nurses Association’s annual 

Magnet conference last fall

the last five years, the hospital 

ranked number one 

in PRC’s database of over 

250 health care facilities for 

physician satisfaction with 

nursing care. We received 

“5-Star” honors (top 10 percent) 

for “overall quality of 

care” and physician satisfaction

Delnor Plays Key Role 

in Controlling H1N1 Flu 

Since the H1N1 (swine) 

flu emerged last spring, 

Delnor has played a major 

role in helping to control 

the pandemic. The hospital 

teamed up with the Kane 

County Health Department 

and other providers to 

launch a campaign entitled 

“Stop the flu – it starts with 

you,” which focused on 

educating the community 

about prevention, symptoms 

and self-care. 

Delnor also administered 

vaccine to patients and hos- 

pital staff, performed testing 

on suspected cases and 

treated a number of residents 

who became seriously

Una Reed, who was hospitalized

patients, such as the music 

therapy program. 

“Una loved music, and 

when Stephanie, the 

music therapist, visited her 

several times a week to 

play the guitar, you could 

see her eyes light up. It’s 

a wonderful service that 

helped her relax and eased 

her anxiety. One visit, in 

particular, that I’ll always 

remember is when Una 

asked Stephanie if she knew 

her favorite piece – ‘The 

Tennessee Waltz’. Stephanie 

indicated that wasn’t in her 

repertoire, but then went 

out and found a recording 

of the waltz and brought it 

to Una to listen to the next 

day. You should have seen 

the expression on her face!”

Hospital strengthened their 

long standing support of 

the clinic in 2009 by 

donating $40,000 to help 

fund clinic operations and 

by providing $363,000 in 

free diagnostic testing 

to TCHP patients. The 

hospital also sponsored 

the clinic’s health fair and 

provided free screenings 

and information at the 

event. In addition, many

cians on the medical staff 

volunteer their services at 

the clinic.

Volunteers Give 

from the Heart 

Winston Churchill once 

said, “We make a living

give.” Nowhere is that 

spirit more alive at Delnor 

than among the hospital’s 

corps of over 700 

volunteers. From assisting 

in patient care areas, to 

working at the reception 

desk, to delivering mail to 

patients, and much more 

– community volunteers 

of all ages serve in many 

important capacities at the 

hospital. “They help support 

patients, families and 

employees with dedication 

and passion,” says Rose 

Booe, director of volun- 

teer services. In 2009, 

volunteers contributed 

55,000 hours of service.

The numbers tell the story – half of all men and one-third of all women 

will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime. These concerning statis- 

tics underscore the need in our community for the quality support and 

educational services LivingWell has provided free to more than 7,000 individuals 

living with cancer, cancer survivors and their loved ones.

profit cancer resource center dedicated to providing 

people living with cancer and their loved ones compassionate 

support and educational services. The 

center is a member of Delnor Health System.

uncommon grace and a positive 

attitude that’s inspiring.

Several months ago, when 

the couple learned Tracey’s 

cancer had spread yet 

again, they decided to seek 

support at LivingWell. “I 

volunteered at the center 

in children’s programming 

for a couple of years, so I 

knew it was a very special 

place. But I didn’t realize 

just how special until Dave 

and I began participating 

in programs ourselves last 

summer,” she says. 

Since then, the Elburn 

couple has benefited from 

the center’s counseling 

service, massage therapy, 

support groups and educational 

classes. For Tracey, 

LivingWell has become a 

“safe haven” where she can 

receive the help she needs 

to cope with her cancer. 

“It’s somewhere I know I 

can go and express my feelings 

and talk about what 

I’m going through with 

someone besides family 

and friends, and that’s 

really been an encouragement 

to me.”

Meeting the Increased 

Need for Services 

As the demand has 

increased, so has the 

programming at LivingWell. 

“When the center first 

opened, we provided a 

basic level of services, 

primarily for adults,” says 

Terry Murphy, chairman 

of the board of directors. 

“Over the past four years 

we’ve been able to triple 

the number and types 

of programs, including 

becoming the first cancer 

resource center in the 

western suburbs to develop 

offerings for pediatric 

cancer patients.” From support 

groups, to counseling, 

to informational lectures, 

to nutrition consults and 

exercise classes – LivingWell 

now has more than 30 

different programs, with 

more in the planning for 

this year. “The needs are 

so great. Every time we 

offer something new, it 

seems registration fills up 

right away,” says Murphy.

Taking a Holistic 

Approach to Cancer Care 

LivingWell complements 

the medical components of 

cancer care by focusing on 

the psychosocial needs of 

those with the disease. “Too 

often medical treatment 

does not adequately address 

the mental, emotional, 

spiritual and physical challenges 

of cancer patients,” 

says Robert Bayer, MD, an 

oncologist on the medical 

staff at Delnor Hospital, and 

chairman of the center’s 

Professional Advisory 

Committee. “That’s why 

organizations like LivingWell 

are so important and need 

to be better incorporated 

into the continuum of care. 

They help those with cancer 

learn to live again.” 

To further address the 

gap, the center has begun 

providing support services 

directly in doctors’ offices 

and hospitals. “This has 

been an important step 

forward – enabling us to 

meet the needs of cancer 

patients and their loved 

ones soon after diagnosis,” 

says Executive Director 

Nancy Vance. “It’s something 

we plan to expand 

in 2010.” n

LivingWell is totally reliant 

on volunteers and financial 

contributions from 

the community and the 

medical profession to fulfill 

its mission. All services 

are provided free to those 

with cancer and cancer 

survivors and their families.

volunteers,” says Vance. 

“We are so grateful to the 

40 medical professionals 

and 100 community members 

who donate their time 

at the center. We are also 

thankful to the many individuals 

and organizations 

that have provided financial 

support or referred 

participants to LivingWell, 

especially Delnor,” notes 

Vance. The hospital played 

a vital role in the creation 

of the center, and has continued 

its strong support 

over the past four years. 

Since 2005, Delnor has 

contributed more than 

$1.5 million and has provided 

hundreds of hours 

in professional services.

Benefits 

Greg Boerner is one of the thousands of Fox Valley residents who have 

participated in the free “Know Your Heart” screening offered by Delnor 

Hospital since the program began in 2006. It’s an example of how the hospital is 

proactively working to improve the health of area residents through community 

outreach and other community benefit activities. In fact, in 2009 Delnor invested 

a total of more than $53 million in community benefits (including charity care 

and uncompensated care) – a 33 percent increase over just two years ago. 

“The ‘Know Your Heart’ Program helped 

me identify risk factors for cardiac 

disease I didn’t even know I had. The 

nurse counselor took the time to review 

my screening results with me and 

answer my questions. She also helped 

me develop a plan to improve my diet 

and exercise habits. I followed 

through on her advice, and 

today I feel like I’m in the 

best shape of my life.”

Boerner had no 

reason to suspect he 

had risk factors for heart 

disease. He felt healthy and 

had no family history of 

cardiac problems. But after 

turning 40 and hearing 

about Delnor’s free “Know 

Your Heart” screening, he 

decided to sign up – just 

to be on the safe side. 

As Boerner explains, 

it turned out to be a lifechanging 

decision. “When 

I got my test results back, 

I found out I had high 

cholesterol and triglyceride 

levels and needed to lose 

weight. The nurse counselor 

I met with helped me 

realize I needed to make 

some changes, and she 

suggested several things 

I could do that would 

make a difference – such 

as starting an exercise 

routine and improving my 

diet and nutrition. She also 

provided me with information 

to help me get going.” 

A Fresh Start 

Boerner says the screening 

and the counselor’s advice 

were just the wake-up call 

and inspiration he needed. 

That afternoon, he went 

home and began an exercise 

routine that he has stayed 

with ever since. He also 

began eating healthier and 

making other lifestyle 

modifications. 

Last summer Boerner 

took advantage of the 

“Know Your Heart” 

program’s free six-month 

follow-up session and was 

excited to find out that he 

had dropped a dozen 

pounds and made significant 

improvements in his 

cholesterol and triglyceride 

levels. “It was good to have 

the follow-up visit to help 

me gauge how I was doing 

and validate 

that the 

changes 

I made 

were 

working,” 

notes Boerner. 

“A key reason I went to 

the screening was because 

Delnor offered it free. In 

these economic times, that 

really helped. I also appreciated 

the staff. Sometimes 

hospitals can be a little 

intimidating, but at Delnor 

everyone made me feel very 

comfortable. The whole process 

was a great experience 

for me,” Boerner says.
