• Teaching for Excellence in Science and Literacy Achievement II (TESLA II). A
continuation of the original TESLA program from 2007 described below. TESLA
II is a partnership between LCSC and the Lewiston School District to implement
the program district wide. This program will continue to increase teacher’s
knowledge of science concepts, their ability to effectively incorporate science kits
in their classrooms, and incorporate questioning and literacy strategies to help
students communicate their knowledge of science. In addition, this program
supports three lead-teacher positions and one full-time Science Resource Teacher
to work with program participants in their classrooms and develop in-district
personnel who can independently operate the program at the conclusion of the
funding cycle. 2010-2012.
• Enhancing Math Instruction and Building Capacity in STEM Education. The
purpose of this project is to build capacity for quality STEM instruction in high
need school districts by preparing teachers along the continuum of pre-service
practice to teacher leadership.
• Summer at Washington State University: Engineering Experiences for Teachers
(SWEET). Program facilitator and co-principal investigator. 2004-2010. The
SWEET program is designed to 1) provide inservice and preservice teachers with
basic familiarity and experience with engineering processes, 2) demonstrate how
engineering processes relate to but are distinct from scientific processes, 3) work
on a project that interests them and solve a real engineering problem with a
faculty mentor, and 4) strengthen their abilities in math and science, especially as
they apply to solving real problems.
• Teaching for Excellence in Science and Literacy Achievement (TESLA). A
replication of a science and literacy program developed by Dr. Michael Klentschy
of the El Centro School District, El Centro, CA. This program is designed to
increase teachers knowledge of science concepts, their ability to effectively
incorporate science kits (e.g. FOSS) in their classrooms, and incorporate
questioning and literacy strategies to help students communicate their knowledge
of science. 2007-2010.
Bureau of Indian Affairs Reading First program. Invited member of an evaluation team
conducting state level evaluations in early literacy for the Bureau of Indian Affairs,
Office of Indian Education program. Began this project as an assessment
administrator and following my first foray in the field was promoted to Team
leader. I lead a team of three-to-five assessment administrators and conduct
DIBELS assessments at various BIA schools across the nation (e.g. UT, AZ, NM,
WI, MI, and MN). Assessments are conducted using the latest electronic
technology, results are downloaded to a central database before leaving the school
and schools/teachers have all their results available for school, grade, class, and
individual student level analysis by the end of the day. Data for all schools is
compiled to assess overall program effectiveness and discretely analyzed to
diagnose deficiencies and prescribe treatments at the school, class, and student
level. Annual evaluation reports for 2008-2010.
