Rail Reconditioning
Technology
Under normal use, rails typically
only wear on one edge. Opposite
the gauge corner sufficient material
is preserved to turn the rail around
and create a new gauge corner. The
reconditioning process doubles the
lifespan of the rail.
Cost-Effectiveness
Rail reconditioning is one of the
most economical applications of
material recycling. Re-use of rails
allows cost savings of more than
50 % compared to new rails.
Reprofiling
By means of state-of-the-art rail
milling technology (milling and
integrated grinding) a new individual
profile is cut into the former nongauge-corner.
Cross-sectional and
longitudinal tolerances are superior
to new rolled rails.
Refurbishing
Reconditioning is conducted according
to Deutsche Bahn Standard DSB
918 255-1. In a number of subsequent
steps rails are straightened, checked
for defects (with ultrasonic and Eddy
Current testing), damaged sections
removed and finally welded into rails
of up to 180 m length.
Application
Reconditioned and reprofiled rails
can be used in all track categories up
to 200 km/h.
