Life was easy in my days as cyclist. A well planned season
meant I would start preparing in December and start relaxing
half way through October. You’d choose your most important
events and trained to peak at these moments. After one
of these peaks, the Beijing Olympics in 2008, we started work
on our new team. In 2009 we achieved our
first successes and a proud team was born.
In my mind it seems the team has been there
since a long time, yet this might be due to my
mindset in topsport and activities within the
teams I was part of in the last couple of years.
Now we venture in 2010, the team’s second
year. I’m starting to discover what life’s like
as teammanager. Suddenly these seasons
just seem to keep on going.

In 2010 Milka joined our team and we’re now known as the
“Trek-Brentjens Mountainbike Racing Team powered by
Milka”. A team with a professional appearance. We’ve got
our unique style, identity, posters, fancards, website, magazine,
communication, support, cars, team truck, sponsors
and riders. This combined is what makes our
team. Our goal? We want to bring two riders to
the startline of the 2012 London Olympics.
May it be clear - we strive to be an internationally
orientated team. And we’re proud of
having reinforced our team with a young Swiss
rider, Lukas Kaufmann. He is joined by a yound
Dutch rider, Irjan Luttenberg, who will be riding
his last year in the U23 category.

My work as teammanager is gaining momen-
pushes on. Preparations, bookings, talks,
tum, shifting my riding career to the back-
contracts, budgets, PR. Deals are made,
ground somewhat. My focus will be with the
partnerships forged. Together we work our
team, and my riding will be limited to certain
way towards our goals in mountainbiking. Sponsors are great events such as the Cape Epic, AlpenTour, Bike-events,
incredibly important. They make our rider’s dream a reality.
In return the riders, and we as a team, do our utmost
the Bart Brentjens Challenge and the Crocodile Trophy.

A blink oF hisToRy
In 1992 Bart Brentjens started riding his first mountainbike
races with an official (KNWU) competition
license. Soon after people recognized his talent. As
a member of the Panasonic-squad he was able to
compete in a wider spectre of races. In the same
year Brentjens became a member of the Dutch
national Team at the European Championships in
Austria and the World Championships in Canada.
Only two years later Bart Brentjens would win the
Grundig-World Cup series overall. He showed that
he was World’s best mountain biker – also winning
the WC-race in Cairns - throughout the 1994
season. In 1995 he proved to be on top of his game
again. Bart won his first Dutch Championships, a
title he would win 10 times during his career. The
first edition of the Tour VTT, the mountain biking
Tour de France, was also won by Bart Brentjens.
But the highlight of the 2005 season would definitely
be his victory during the World Championships
in Kirchzarten (Germany). Wearing the rainbowjersey
he worked hard to prepare for the next
goal: the Olympic games. Bart Brentjens succeeded
in becoming the first MTB Olympic Champion in
history by winning a very hard race in Atlanta 1996.
He became a sports hero and mountain biking
suddenly became a big sport in The Netherlands.
In 1996 he won a World Cup-race in Les Gets and
won the 2nd edition of the Tour VTT. Bart had won
almost every title imaginable at that point in his
career. But what he still wanted was the European
title. In 2001 Bart would achieve this goal as well
by winning the blue jersey with the yellow stars of
Europe. In Sankt Wendel (Germany) he simply was
the best yet again. One year later Brentjens won
the World Cup-race in Madrid. In 2004 he surprised
many people by winning a bronze medal at the Olympic
Games in Athens. The next surprise followed
in 2006, when he beat Olympic Champion Julien
Absalon at the World Cup-race on the tropical Island
of Curacao. In autumn 2008 Brentjens, at the
age of 40, started his own mountain bike team: the
Trek-Bart Brentjens Mountainbike Racing Team.
Another success added to this impressive list. His
riders did very well and Bart won the Dutch MTB
marathon-title. The legend continues…

During the last month of the 2009 mountainbike season, Jelmer was in
terrific shape. The Dutch rider won the Tour l’Hexagonal, the mountainbike
version of the Tour de France. Furthermore he succeeded in winning
the Dutch Hondsrug Classic and finished in second place at the Dutch
Championships marathon mountainbiking in Eijsden. Showing his value
for Dutch mountainbiking, Jelmer was the best performing Dutch athlete
at the 2009 World Championships in Canberra (Australia). ,,I came in 26th.
With a little more luck, I would have done better’’, commented Jelmer on
the race.
For 2010 Pietersma, who is an Outdoor instructor (CIOS), started well by
winning a stage (together with Bart Brentjens) in the Absa Cape Epic in
South-Africa. ,,My preparation this winter went well. Last year at the end
of the season I felt strong. I want to continue this level of performance in
2010. My main goals are top 20 results in the World Cup races. I firmly
believe it is possible after what I’ve shown in 2009. Plus I want to win the
Dutch MTB-title in Zoetermeer. The course there suits me well. Furthermore
I want to perform well at the World Championships in Mont Sainte
Anne in Canada. Yet I am also looking forward to the Olympic Games in
London in 2012.’’

No need to introduce Bart Brentjens. In the Netherlands Bart Brentjens
is the national Icon of the Dutch Mountainbike Sport. This man, who was
born in the province of Limburg, won everything you can possibly win in his
career. He was the world’s first Olympic champion, he has won European-
, World- and national titles, the Tour VTT, the Grundig-World Cup and several
World Cup-events. Last year marked a new chapter in his career, as
Bart become the teammanager of the Trek-Bart Brentjens Mountainbike
Racing Team. He gained a lot of new experiences and with the help of
his wife Petra and the team’s sponsors, a professional team was forged.
Bart Brentjens as a rider was focussed, worked hard and only settled for
the best. As a teammanager he continues to strive for the best. The best
equipment, the best sponsors and the best riders. As he can still be found
on the bike, Bart combines both jobs: teammanager and rider. In 2009 he
added another title to his list by winning the Dutch title in marathon in
his own Bart Brentjens Challenge. Brentjens is working very closely with
his riders and he uses his skills and experience to let his bikers improve.
Surrounded by five young talented mountainbikers from Switzerland, Belgium
and the Netherlands the focus of the Trek-Brentjens Mountainbike
Racing Team powered by Milka is on the future.

Belgian mountainbiker Tim Wynants is a talented athlete. As a junior in
2005 he won the bronze medal at the World Championships in Livigno. In
2007 he finished 2nd at the European Championships U23 in Turkey. 2009
marked his last year as an espoir-biker, a year to reflect upon with mixed
emotions. ,,The beginning was bad, but I ended the season very well’’, he
says. Tim won the final race of the German Bundesliga in Bad Salzdetfurth.
He also showed some good legs in October by winning the Belgian
Championships marathon. Wynants: ,,2010 is a fresh start, riding in the
elite-category. My goal is to become a very good mountainbiker in the future.
I don’t want to hurry. I want to grow to the top step by step. This year
I want to perform on a good level throughout the whole season. I am not
focused on qualifying for the big championships, but I want to do the best
I can in every race I enter.’’ His team manager Bart Brentjens motivates
him. ,,I think this team is suited to me. Bart now focuses on young talent
and that will bear fruit in the future. I am stimulated and motivated, riding
in a team with bikers of my own age and level. I hope I can become a top
rider in the next few years.’’

The 2009 MTB season was not Frank Beemer’s most fortunate one. The
Dutch biker suffered a bad start followed by a lot of bad luck. In May
Frank redeemed himself by finishing in 14th (and second Dutch rider) in
the Austrian Alpen Tour as well as finishing on a 5th place in an international
MTB-race in Windhaag (Austria). After a good high altitude-training
in Sankt Moritz he was ready for the European Championships in Holland.
One day prior to the race his luck turned again as he crashed and fell on
his knee that had already caused him headaches in the season start. Another
bad injury on his left knee was the (not so nice) result. Nevertheless
he started in the race, but after the second lap he was forced to stop. Because
of his knee-injury he also couldn’t ride the Dutch Championships.
Frank’s comeback followed in August, but as he had not been selected for
the World Championships Beemer had to motivate himself once again.
,,I hope all the bad luck is over now’’, he says. ,,Because I missed all the
Championships I have to gain UCI-points again this year. A tough job, because
I have to start all the way back in the field from now on. It is my first
season as an elite-rider, so I aim not to high this year. I hope I can do well
at the Dutch Championships and some international races. And I hope to
be the ‘old’ Frank again at the World Cup in Val di Sole. I have some good
memories over there, as I ended in 8th at the World Championships in
2008 on the same circuit.’’

The Swiss mountainbiker Lukas Kaufmann is one of two new team members
for 2010. Teammanager Bart Brentjens refers to him as being a
rough diamond, waiting and ready to be cut. Lukas is only 22 years old
and is one of the best U23 mountainbikers in the world. In last year’s European
Championships in Zoetermeer Lukas won the bronze medal. He
has also won the overall in the highly ranked German Bundesliga U23. At
the World Championships in Canberra he finished in 9th place.
Lukas Kaufmann began with mountain biking at only 7 years of age. He
originates from the town of Gränichen, between Zürich and Bern, where
mountain biking is a very popular sport. ,,I always trained hard and rode
many races’’, he explains. ,,I love to ride my bike and I am very happy to
be in this team in 2010. The organization is good, as well as the bikes and
my colleagues. I think it is an advantage when you’re in a team with more
young and talented riders. It keeps you motivated when there is a little
competition in the team.’’
Lukas now lives in Freiburg in Germany. ,,This is a good area to train and
many bikers live there.’’ In his first year in the elite-category Lukas wants
to qualify for the European- and World Championships.

Irjan Luttenberg is a very talented young Dutch rider and one of the new
bikers in the team. Irjan has learned a lot in his former team ,,but the time
had come to move on’’, he says. ,,I need more competition, also within
the team for which I ride. Plus to me it was very important the team was
managed by Bart Brentjens, as he is such an experienced rider. I think I
can learn a lot from him.’’
In 2008 Irjan Luttenberg won the Dutch U23 title. Last year he finished in
2nd place. ,,This is my last year in this category so I want to try to win my
jersey back: I want to be the Dutch U23 champion again.’’
Irjan Luttenberg studies physiotherapy and lives in Germany, close to
the Dutch border. During the initiation in the team in South-Africa he had
to wash the “house dog”. ,,That was the way the new riders were introduced’’,
he smiles. ,,Yes, I like the atmosphere. It is good to ride with other
young mountain bikers. We motivate each other to reach a higher level I
think. I had a good winter and trained hard. The first races went well - I
have been on the podium in Belgium and in Holland.’’
Last year Irjan had two top 40-results at World Cup races. ,,This year
I want to qualify for the World Championships. I have to do well at the
World Cup-races in April and May, I hope I can achieve top 30-results
in Dalby Forest and Houffalize. The main goal is to take my riding to the
next level.’’
