SOLAR WATER HEATING 

Solar water heating systems use free heat from the sun to warm domestic hot water. 

A conventional boiler or immersion heater is then used to make the water hotter, or to provide 

hot water when solar energy is unavailable.

When a solar water heating system is installed the cylinder may need to be replaced with a 

twin coil cylinder, as one coil receives the heat from the collector on the roof, and the other is 

used to supply heat from the conventional water heating system when the solar energy is 

insufficient. 

Solar water heating systems will typically provide up to 60% annually of a household’s normal 

requirements when installed on a southeast / southwest facing roof without obstruction to the 

sun. Where panels are installed on a northeast / northwest facing roof there may be a reduced 

effect. Typically a domestic installation requires 2-5 M 2 of roof area. The solar collectors are 

available in two types; Flat Plate Collectors and Evacuated Tube Collectors. Each system has 

its advantages in terms of price, efficiency and aesthetics.

SOLAR PHOTOVOLTAIC SYSTEMS 

INTRODUCTION TO SOLAR PV 

Solar Photovoltaic (or Solar PV as it is commonly known) works by utilising the sun to generate electricity. It relies on daylight (rather than 

radiation) to generate power through the use of photovoltaic cells within roof-mounted collectors (modules). 

The electricity produced by Solar PV can be used to drive any appliance that is powered by electricity. An inverter converts the DC current 

into usable AC current that can be used as power. 

The location of the PV modules is vitally important as they must receive the maximum amount of daylight possible. The best location for a 

PV solar collector is on a south-facing roof with a pitch between 30 and 40 degrees. (South-East or South-West roofs are still suitable but 

there would be a reduction in yield by 5-10%.) It is also not advisable to install them where surrounding buildings or trees may cast 

shadows. A site survey is strongly recommended to establish whether Solar PV is suitable. 

The modules have a power warranty of 25 years, and with no moving parts are virtually maintenance free. 

FEED IN TARIFFS (FITS) 

From 1st April 2010, a scheme was introduced where the government pays owners of Solar PV for the electricity 

they generate. The Feed in Tariffs (FiTs) currently pays owners of Small Retrofit systems (up to 4kWp) 41.3p* per unit. 

Small New Builds (up to 4 kWp) and Mid Sized (4 to 10kWp) systems receive 36.1p* per unit. 

Solar PV systems also give the owner reduced electricity bills because the system will supply some or all of your power rather than mains 

electricity. At times of low generation, ie at night, electricity will automatically be taken from the national grid. 

*even if the owner uses all the energy generated. However, an additional 3p per unit is paid for any unused units which are exported back 

to the grid. Rates correct as of June ’10 and provided the system is fitted before 31/3/12, in subsequent years the tariff rate will reduce. 

MCS (MICROGENERATION CERTIFICATION SCHEME) ACCREDITATION 

Solar PV systems must be installed by MCS (Microgeneration Certification Scheme) accredited installers. 

The Microgeneration Certification Scheme is an independent scheme that certifies microgeneration products and installers in accordance 

with consistent standards. It is designed to evaluate microgeneration products and installers against robust criteria providing greater 

protection for consumers. 

kWp is the industry definition for sizing of a solar PV system. 

1kWp generates between 800-900 kWh of electricity each year depending on the efficiency of the solar PV modules.
