A monthly update for Nottingham University Hospitals
NHS Trust’s key stakeholders
neurodisability/complex health needs and
respiratory problems.
Issue 17 – October 2011
NUH scoops national awards
for efficiency work
Projects to improve quality and efficiency at
NUH have swept the boards at a national
awards ceremony.
The Trust was successful at the Health Service
Journal Efficiency Awards 2011 in London –
winning the Efficiency in Training and Education
and the Clinical Support Services awards. The
Trust was also highly commended (runner-up)
in the Efficiency in Acute Service Redesign and
the Workforce Efficiency awards.
No other health Trust was as successful on the
night – from more than 80 individual entries
shortlisted from more than 320 entries.
NUH scooped the Efficiency in Training award
for its Junior Doctors Induction CD. The CD is
sent to junior doctors in their induction packs
several weeks before their rotation begins at
NUH. This has reduced their formal induction
from four days to just half a day – which allows
the junior doctors to start treating patients
sooner. The CD also received special
commendation in the Workforce Efficiency
category.
The Trust won the Clinical Support Services
award for its pilot rapid response respiratory
Physiotherapist service for children with severe
Children with severe disability, life-limiting and
life-threatening conditions can spend several
weeks in hospital each winter with prolonged
chest infections. Effective respiratory secretion
clearance may prevent and shorten the duration
of chest infections and reduce hospital
admissions.
This is the first year of the HSJ Efficiency
Awards, which have been designed to promote
healthcare organisations that demonstrate
initiatives that improve efficiency.
New car park to open to staff
and visitors at the QMC
We are officially opening a new 540-space car
park at the QMC for staff and visitors. Car Park
3 will be available in October on the site of the
old Curie Court residences, between the
Treatment Centre and Medical School (south
end of QMC Campus).
Work to demolish the old Curie Court buildings
began at the end of January this year, with
most staff parking spaces becoming available
over the summer. There will be 320 spaces
available to visitors.
This was following a commitment to invest more
than £3million to increase the car parking
capacity at our hospitals in response to
feedback from our patients and staff. In total,
there are 1,000 parking spaces for the public at
QMC and City Hospital.
The new car park will operate a number plate
recognition system to allow staff to use the car
park without the need for a swipe card. Visitors
will take a ticket and pay on exit.

The number plate recognition system will know
how many staff cars have entered the car park -
and will show ‘FULL’ when the allocated
number is reached, meaning no more staff cars
will be able to go through the barrier into the car
park until a space becomes available. This will
ensure the allocated number of spaces remains
available for visitors.
£13.5m awarded for hospital
and university research
Two partnerships between NUH and the
University of Nottingham have been awarded a
combined £13.5million in funding to help them
to develop and translate new scientific
discoveries into ground-breaking medicines,
treatments and better care for all NHS patients.
The Biomedical Research Units are in
gastrointestinal disease and hearing problems,
and are supported by the National Institute for
Health Research.
An independent panel of leading international
experts assessed the applications from across
England. Awards were made to NHS Trusts,
working in partnership with universities, with an
outstanding track-record of research
excellence, and were based on the scale and
nature of the proposed research and its
anticipated benefit for NHS patients.
Peter Homa, Chief Executive of NUH, said:
“We’re delighted to have been awarded this
funding – it’s a significant endorsement of the
strength of the research and the quality of
expertise we share between Nottingham
University Hospitals and the University of
Nottingham.
“Bidding for the funding was a highlycompetitive
process, where we were up against
the best Biomedical Research Units in the
country. With this money we will continue to
ensure the latest scientific advancements are
translated into improved care for patients.”
The BRU in Gastrointestinal Diseases is based
at the Queen’s Medical Centre. The BRU in
Deafness and Hearing Problems is based at
Ropewalk House in Nottingham City Centre.

Second issue of NUH News is
now available to download
The September/October issue of the new
hospital newspaper for staff, patients and
visitors is now available to read online.
The new edition of NUH News includes:
• details about our financial position
• an update on car parking charges
• a progress report on our Foundation
Trust bid
• new initiatives to improve care for stroke
patients
NUH has embarked on a major programme
called Better for You to improve the quality,
safety, efficiency and productivity of hospital
services. While much of this looks at long-term
goals, staff are also empowered to put forward
ideas which can be put into practice quickly.
Just Do Its are defined as ideas which will
benefit patients or staff and which can be
implemented typically within a few days. Many
of the ideas relate to improving the working
lives of staff at NUH.
As well as the satisfaction of suggesting and
then implementing their ideas, staff are also
recognised for their efforts through regular
events where they present their ideas to the
Trust Board and have the opportunity to share
them with other Just Do It implementers. Each
person receives a certificate of achievement
• plus puzzles, recipes and maps.
