Dear Friends of Secrets Unsealed,
Since the month of March I have been privileged to take the
good news of Present Truth to Colombia, Puerto Rico, Cuba,
New Orleans, Santo Domingo, Canada, Australia, Sweden,
3ABN camp meeting, Georgia-Cumberland Hispanic camp
meeting, Mountain View camp meeting and Northern New
England camp meeting. Now I am at Soquel for the Central
California camp meeting and then on to the Oklahoma Hispanic
camp meeting. As you can see, the spring and summer
have been quite busy to say the least!
What is most rewarding about these speaking commitments is meeting people from all
walks of life and hearing their stories of how Secrets Unsealed has made a difference in
their personal walk with Jesus—stories of conversions, stories of lukewarm members experiencing
personal revival, stories of people growing in their knowledge of God’s Word
and stories of former members returning to the church.
At Secrets Unsealed it is the salvation of people that we are concerned about—both those
who are lost in church and those who are lost in the world. Weekly we receive letters
from prisoners whose lives have been changed by the gospel. In my recent trip to Cuba
I was able to meet an entire Methodist congregation that embraced the message of the
Adventist church. At camp meetings many come to tell me about how God reached them
through the ministry of Secrets Unsealed. Praise the Lord!
Though the glory belongs exclusively to God, I believe that a word of appreciation to all
of you who have faithfully supported the work of Secrets Unsealed is in order. We thank
you from the bottom of our hearts. Please continue to keep us in your prayers and in your
financial planning.
Blessing on a Bulletin Board
“I picked up a Prophecy’s Dr. Jekyll & Mr.
Hyde DVD that was pinned to a bulletin
board. Written on the paper sleeve was
“Free” so I took it home and watched it. I
have been blessed by God’s word and very
much appreciate the teachings of Pastor
Worship Egyptian Style
“Maurice called in for the very first time.
He watched Worship Egyptian Style on
TV (local channel with his rabbit ear antenna),
and was fascinated by it. Normally
the channels come in fuzzy, but this time
it came in crystal clear. He is a Sunday
through 20 times, and has studied music.
He says this sermon is right on. People
who don’t accept that there is a difference
between worship music and secular music
Revival Without Repentance?
“God bless Pastor Bohr for his ministry!
I have learned so much! It is always like
finding precious gems of knowledge every
both the Bible and the Spirit of Prophecy.
Often, the connections he preaches on between
the Old and New Testaments are
there, but many students of Scripture (including
Never Too Late
“I am 52 years old and almost finished
An inmate, Bob, introduced me to Pastor
Bohr. Amazing! I’m about half way
through Cracking the Genesis Code studies.
Most amazing teaching
I have ever experienced. I
have never had the Bible
explained to me in such a
plain and simple way, and
so in-depth.
I am also following along
in the Three Angels’ Message
are doing is amazing. Before
I started any of this, I had decided
when I got out of prison that I was going
to do things right. So I started by putting
God first. Your lectures have helped me
Apostolic Present Truth
As we saw in our first study in this series, there
was a particular present truth that Jesus called the
apostles to preach after His ascension. That truth
involved three steps in the movement of Jesus
through the sanctuary. They were to proclaim that
Jesus had lived a perfect life as the Lamb in the
camp; that he had suffered a vicarious death as a
Lamb at the altar of sacrifice and resurrected at
the laver in the court and finally, that individuals
who truly repented and came to Him by faith into
Reformers from left to right: Martin Luther, John Wycliffe, and John Knox

the holy place could personally reap the
benefits of the work He had just accomplished
on earth. That is to say, His righteous
life and vicarious death could be
credited to their personal account and
they would be looked upon by God as if
they had never sinned.
Work of Jesus in
the Holy Place
Ellen G. White clearly linked the work
of Jesus in the court on earth with His
ministration in the holy place in the
heavenly sanctuary:
“The rending of the veil of the temple
showed that the Jewish sacrifices and ordinances
would no longer be received. The
great Sacrifice had been offered and had
been accepted, and the Holy Spirit which
descended on the day of Pentecost carried
the minds of the disciples from the earthly
sanctuary to the heavenly, where Jesus had
entered by His own blood, to shed upon His
disciples the benefits of His atonement.”
The Story of Redemption, p. 386
Apostolic Preaching
The disciples were the first to reap the
benefits of Christ’s earthly work. On the
Day of Pentecost through repentance and
faith in Christ their sins were forgiven and
they received the gift of the Holy Spirit. It
must be noted that the gift of the Holy
Spirit on the Day of Pentecost was given
to the disciples for a very specific purpose:
“But you shall receive power when the
Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you
shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and
in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of
the earth.” (Acts 1:8)
The gift was not given for self-edification
but rather so that the disciples could
announce with power that the heavenly
sanctuary was open for business and that
the benefits of Christ’s life and death were
available to individual sinners. When the
apostle Peter finished his sermon after
the outpouring of the Holy Spirit, several
men approached him and asked what they
needed to do in the light of Peter’s sermon
to which he replied:
“Repent, and let every one [individually]
of you be baptized in the name of
Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and
you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.”
(Acts 2:38)
What Peter was saying is that others
could now experience what they themselves
had already experienced: Individuals
could repent and trust in the intercession
of the living Christ and their sins
would be forgiven and the Holy Spirit
would be bestowed upon them so that in
turn they could witness to others.
Notably, the evening of resurrection
day Jesus had told His disciples what their
mission and message would be:
“Then He said to them, ‘Thus it is written,
and thus it was necessary for the Christ to suffer
and to rise from the dead the third day, and
that repentance and remission of sins should
be preached in His name to all nations, beginning
at Jerusalem.’” (Luke 24:46, 47)
7

In Acts 5:31 we find the apostle Peter
witnessing before the Jewish Sanhedrin.
He reminded them that they killed Jesus
but that His Father had called Him from
the dead so that He could be Prince and
Savior over His people. Peter then informed
them:
“Him [Jesus] God has exalted to His right
hand to be Prince and Savior, to give repentance
to Israel and forgiveness of sins.”
In Acts 10:29-43 we have the same scenario.
Peter reviews the story of Jesus with
Cornelius. He first tells him about His life
(10:37, 38). Then Peter describes how Jesus
was killed but resurrected on the third
day (10:39-41). He then goes on to say that
God called them to preach the story he
had just told that through the name of Jesus
‘whoever [individually] believes in Him
will receive remission of sins.’ (Acts 10:43)
The call and commissioning of the
apostle Paul follows the same pattern.
When the apostle Paul was converted to
Jesus on the Road to Damascus, Jesus told
him that he was a chosen vessel to take the
gospel to the Gentiles (Acts 26:16-18). Specifically
he was told that that he was sent
that the Gentiles might also ‘receive forgiveness
of sins and an inheritance among those
who are sanctified by faith in Me [Jesus].’ Jesus
then directed Saul to go to the house of
a man named Judas and there he was met
by Ananias who laid hands on him so that
he might receive the Holy Spirit (Acts 9:18).
He then baptized him for the forgiveness
of his sins (Acts 9:18; 22:16).
The apostle Paul, as well as Peter, clearly
understood that his mission was to preach
that Jesus had lived and died for sinners
and that the benefits of His earthly work
were available to repentant and believing
individuals. Several years after his conversion
the apostle Paul explained his central
message and mission:
“For there is [present tense] one God
and one Mediator between God and men,
the Man Christ Jesus. Who gave [past
tense] Himself a ransom for all, to be testified
in due time [His death as ransom
would be preached in due time when the
Holy Spirit was poured out on the Day
of Pentecost], for which I was appointed
a preacher and an apostle [one who is
sent]—I am speaking the truth in Christ
and not lying—a teacher of the Gentiles in
faith and truth.” (I Timothy 2:5-7)
Paul was simply writing to Timothy
that because the man Jesus gave (past
tense) Himself as a ransom for all He was
now (present tense) qualified to serve as
Mediator between God and men. And
Paul clearly saw that he was appointed as
a preacher and apostle to teach this great
truth to the Gentiles following the Day of
Pentecost!
The apostle John also understood the
relationship between the righteous life of
Jesus and His work in the holy place. He
clearly stated that if anyone sins, we have
an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ
the righteous (I John 2:1). The word ‘righteous’
indicates that because Jesus lived a
righteous life He is qualified to present
that life before His Father as our Advocate.
8

The book of Hebrews makes it crystal
clear that we can come to God through
Jesus, our intercessor, because He lived a
righteous life:
“Therefore He is also able to save to the
uttermost those who come to God through
Him, since He always lives to make intercession
for them. For such a High Priest was
fitting for us, who is holy, harmless, undefiled,
separate from sinners, and has become
higher than the heavens.” (Hebrews 7:25)
Finished at the Cross?
There is this idea in Christendom that
Jesus finished everything at the cross.
This can be a dangerous half truth if not
understood properly. It is true that by His
life and death Jesus made perfect provision
for the salvation of the entire human
race. But, as we have seen, this provision
must be personally and individually
claimed. If the work of Jesus was finished
at the cross, what has He been doing in
heaven for the last two thousand years?
Let’s be absolutely clear: When Jesus
said: ‘It is finished’ on the cross, He had
lived for all and died for all! Penitent
sinners could be accepted in the beloved
through the benefits of Christ’s perfect life
and death. In other words, a perfect oncefor-all
provision had been made for the
salvation of every person on earth. But the
ministry of Jesus in the holy place applies
those benefits to penitent individuals. In
this sense his intercession in heaven is as
indispensible as His death on the cross. It
is within this context that we must understand
the following misunderstood statement
by Ellen G. White:
“The intercession of Christ in man’s behalf
in the sanctuary above is as essential
to the plan of salvation as was His death
upon the cross. By His death He began
that work which after His resurrection He
ascended to complete in heaven. We must
by faith enter within the veil, ‘whither the
forerunner is for us entered.’ Hebrews 6:20.”
The Great Controversy, p. 489
Summarizing
• In the camp, Jesus wove a spotless robe
of righteousness for all people by his
perfect obedience. Every act of obedience
was a thread added to the robe.
Salvation is by grace through faith in
Christ’s perfect righteousness, not ours.
• In the court, Jesus then suffered a oncefor-all,
unrepeatable death for the sins
of the entire human race.
• As Intercessor or Advocate in the holy
place he now applies the benefits of his
perfect life and death to individuals who
come to him in repentance and faith
• This was the present truth message that
was to be proclaimed by the apostles to
the churched Jews and the unchurched
Gentiles.
Apostasy
Shortly after the conclusion of the apos-
9

tolic period the Church went astray from
the present truth message of the apostles
and fell into apostasy. The Church lost
sight of the [1] righteous life of Christ in
the camp and His [2] once-for-all death
on the cross (in the court) for sin. As a result
the Church lost sight of the [3] intercessory
work of Jesus in the holy place of
the heavenly sanctuary.
Daniel 8
The book of Daniel had prophesied
this apostasy hundreds of years before it
occurred.
In Daniel 8 this apostasy is described under
the symbol of a little horn. According
to Daniel 8:11, 12 the little horn would take
away the ‘daily’ from the Prince of the host.
The Prince is Jesus (see, Joshua 5:13-15)
and the ‘daily’ refers to His ministry in the
court and in the holy place of the sanctuary.
Let’s take a look at Daniel 8:11, 12:
“He [the little horn] even exalted himself
as high as the Prince of the host; and
by him [the little horn] the daily sacrifices
were taken away, and the place of
His sanctuary was cast down. 12 Because of
transgression, an army was given over to
the horn to oppose the daily sacrifices; and
he cast truth down to the ground. He did all
this and prospered.”
In recent years there has been an animated
debate about the meaning of the
‘daily’. The simple fact is that the word
‘daily’ in Daniel 8 must be understood
within the context of the Hebrew sanctuary.
When this word is used in the framework
of the sanctuary it always refers to
the work of the priest in the court and in
the holy place. It is used of the continual
daily ministry of the high priest, of the
sacrifice, of the candlestick, of the table
of showbread, and of the altar of incense.
It is never used to describe the work of the
high priest in the most holy place.
Papal Heresies
A careful study of Daniel 7 and 8 reveals
that the little horn is a symbol of
the Roman Catholic papacy. Did the papacy
actually take away the continual and
cast the place of Christ’s sanctuary to the
earth? The answer is a resounding yes! In
the course of time, the papacy developed
a rival system of salvation which took
the place of the ministry of Christ. Three
deadly heresies were hatched and in the
course of time fully developed.
Heresy #1: The papacy took away the focus
from the perfect life of Jesus in the camp
and led people to trust in their own works
for righteousness such as doing penance,
going on pilgrimages, buying indulgences,
lighting candles, giving alms, etc.
Heresy #2: The papacy took away the focus
from the once-for-all unrepeatable
death of Jesus by instituting the sacrifice
of the mass where Jesus is supposedly
sacrificed anew in every mass. The people
were led to focus on the host in the hand of
enly sanctuary.
Heresy #3: The papacy usurped the intercessory
role of Jesus in the heavenly sanctuary
by establishing a rival intercessory
system on earth composed of priests, the
Virgin Mary and the departed saints.
Message of the Reformers
The Protestant Reformers discovered
that the Scriptures clearly contradicted
these three heresies. We provide the following
examples with explanatory notes
in brackets:
Hebrews 7:25-27: “Therefore He is also
able to save to the uttermost those who
come to God through Him, since He always
lives to make intercession [He can apply
the benefits] for them. 26 For such a High
Priest was fitting for us, who is holy, harmless,
undefiled, separate from sinners
[has perfect righteousness to offer], and
has become higher than the heavens; 27 who
does not need daily, as those high priests, to
offer up sacrifices, first for His own sins and
then for the people’s, for this He did once
for all [not over and over again] when He
offered up Himself.”
2 Corinthians 5:21: “For He made Him
who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we
might become the righteousness of God in
Him.”
Titus 3:4-5: “But when the kindness and
the love of God our Savior toward man
appeared, 5 not by works of righteousness
which we have done, but according to His
mercy He saved us.”
1 Timothy 2:5-6: “For there is one God
and one Mediator between God and men,
the Man Christ Jesus.”
1 John 2:1-2: “My little children, these
things I write to you, so that you may not
sin. And if anyone sins, we have an Advocate
with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous.”
When the protestant reformers studied
Scripture they saw that the papacy had
hidden the work of Jesus in the camp, the
court and the holy place of the sanctuary.
They clearly discerned that what Jesus was
doing in heaven for His people, the papacy
had usurped and placed on earth. The
church had gone astray from the present
truth message of the apostles!
In the Light of Prophecy
But the Reformers saw more than this.
They also discerned that prophecy had
predicted that this apostasy was going to
take place. As they studied the prophecies
about the antichrist, they clearly saw that
he was in their very midst, counterfeiting
the work of Christ from within the
Church, just as prophecy had predicted.
When we think of the work of the Protestant
Reformers, certain expressions
come to mind such as Sola Gratia, Sola
Scriptura, Solo Cristo and Sola Fide. But
these expressions did not appear in a vacuum.
They were the result of a profound
study of Bible prophecy.
11

12
Following the Flow
You see, the Reformers were able to
follow the sequence of events in Daniel
7 and they could clearly discern that the
little horn rose immediately after the Roman
Empire had been broken up by the
barbarian invasions. They understood that
the restrainer (the Roman Empire) of II
Thessalonians 2 had been taken out of the
way by the barbarian invasions and that
the papacy had taken its place. They clearly
saw that the Church had become the
harlot of Revelation 17 and had set up the
abomination of desolation mentioned by
Jesus in the prophecy of Matthew chapter
24. Dr. Leroy Edwin Froom explained the
importance of Bible prophecy as a catalyst
in the message of the Reformers:
“In Germany, Switzerland, France, Denmark,
Sweden, England, and Scotland
there had been simultaneous and impressive
declarations by voice and pen that
the Papacy was the specified Antichrist of
prophecy. The symbols of Daniel, Paul, and
John were applied with tremendous effect.
Hundreds of books and tracts impressed
their contention upon the consciousness
of Europe. Indeed, it gained so great a
hold upon the minds of men that Rome, in
alarm, saw that she must successfully counteract
this identification of Antichrist with
the Papacy, or lose the battle.” L. E. Froom,
The Prophetic Faith of our Fathers, volume
2, pp. 484, 485
The understanding of Bible prophecy
provided the mandate for the Reformers
to preach the pure gospel and to unmask
this system that had perverted the Scriptures
and adulterated the apostolic gospel.
Thus the Reformers attempted to bring the
church back to the present truth that was
preached by Peter and the apostles after the
Day of Pentecost. They knew why God had
raised them up and what their mission was.
No Plan to Leave
It was not Martin Luther’s plan to leave
the Roman Catholic Church. His intense
desire was for the Church to return to
the apostolic faith that Jesus is [1] our
righteousness, that [2] His once-for-all
death is sufficient and that [3] He now
intercedes for those who claim the benefits
of His life and death. But when the
Church rejected the message and persecuted
those who were proclaiming it, the
Church fell into total darkness. God was
giving the papacy a golden opportunity
to return to the apostolic faith and preaching
but she rejected that opportunity.
Because the papacy fell into incurable
apostasy, the Reformers called people to
leave the apostate Church and join the
Protestant movement where the genuine
gospel of righteousness by faith was
preached. Thousands upon thousands embraced
the message of revival and entire
countries were lost to the papacy. Thus an
understanding of the prophecies of Scripture
provided the impetus for the Protestant
Reformation to thrive and proliferate.
Gastritis and Stomach Ulcers
by
Milton Teske, MD
A
common presentation at the ER where
I work at almost any hour of the day
or night is someone who comes in
because of a severe burning pain in the
region of the stomach. It may have been
present for some time on an intermittent
basis, they may have noticed it was worse
after eating spicy foods, they may have noticed
that eating sometimes relieved the
pain, they may have been taking antacids
like Mylanta or Maalox for these pains.
But now they are in the ER because the
pain has become so severe they can no
longer stand it and they have no relief with
other measures.
We have medicines that can stop the
pain while we do some tests to rule out
other causes. But frequently we will give
a mixture of three medicines to drink we
call a GI cocktail (also know by some of
the ER staff as a Green Lizard). It tastes really
awful and leaves a numb feeling in the
14

mouth and throat but frequently it gives
immediate relief of the severe pain and if
it does it confirms our suspicion that this
patient is suffering from a gastric ulcer.
Patients who have experienced this relief
will frequently beg for another Green Lizard
if they should come to the ER again
in the future with a reoccurrence of this
severe stomach pain.
If a gastroenterologist were to do an
endoscopy to confirm this diagnosis he
would see through his fiber optic camera
that the normal pink tissue lining the
stomach had become very red and inflamed
(we would call this gastritis) and
that in some areas this normal tissue had
become completely eroded away exposing
the underlying layers of the stomach wall
as raw and frequently bloody ulcerations.
What has happened to cause the stomach
wall to become inflamed and then eaten
away in this manner? Remember that
it is the job of the stomach to digest food.
And to do this it secretes concentrated hydrochloric
acid and powerful protein dissolving
enzymes. If you were to put your
finger in your stomach it would be completely
dissolved to the bone in about 10 to
20 minutes. Some people eat animal flesh
(beef, chicken, etc.) and it is dissolved and
digested in the stomach before passing
on to the intestines where it is further digested
and then absorbed in to the blood.
Now think — the wall of your stomach is
made of muscle and other tissue — why
isn’t your stomach wall digested by all of
these powerful acids and enzymes?
The reason your stomach doesn’t digest
itself is that it is lined by a layer of cells (the
gastric mucosa) which is covered by a thick
layer of mucus which separates it from the
acid and enzymes thus protecting it from
the action of these powerful destructive
agents. But if this protective layer is broken
down and the acid and enzymes can
come in direct contact with these mucosa
cells they rapidly become burned by this
acid mixture and become very red and
inflamed and we call this painful condition
gastritis. But if this process continues,
these mucosa cells are completely
dissolved and now the acids begin to dissolve
the underlying muscle layer — we
call this an ulcer. And if it continues, it
can dissolve a hole completely through the
stomach wall resulting in a perforation.
Now these acids and enzymes and other
stomach contents are leaking into the abdominal
cavity through this hole resulting
in even more severe pain — this is a severe
life threatening condition that will require
immediate diagnosis and surgical treatment
to repair this hole.
Sometimes the ulcer can dissolve into
an artery in the stomach wall resulting in
uncontrolled bleeding into the stomach.
This patient may present with vomiting of
blood or blood passing from the rectum.
This also is a life threatening condition
that requires emergency intervention. A
gastroenterologist can take his scope and
go into the stomach and try to cauterize
this bleeding artery — if he is not successful,
an interventional radiologist can do
an angiogram of the stomach and then try
to inject material into the bleeding artery
to permanently plug it up.
But if the ulcer has not yet progressed
to one of these life-threatening conditions,
what can be done to reverse this process
and heal the ulcer? The cells of the body
are always growing new cells and replacing
the old cells. You are probably aware
that you are growing new skin cells all the
15

time as old ones are washed and rubbed
away. You completely replace your entire
layer of skin in about one month. The
gastric mucosa is doing the same thing
all the time, only you completely replace
your stomach lining every 8 days! So your
stomach is very capable of healing itself
and growing a new layer of mucus producing
cells to protect it. We just have to stop
doing whatever it was that broke down
this protective layer and started this process
in the first place.
So what do we do that
causes this layer to break
down resulting in gastritis
and ulcers? The two biggest
culprits are alcohol
and smoking. The next is
caffeine (coffee, Pepsi, etc.).
But some people say I’ve
been smoking or drinking
coffee for years and it
doesn’t bother me. This
may be true but that doesn’t
mean it isn’t affecting the
stomach lining — it just
means that God made the
stomach so strong that it can survive this
abuse for many years and keep going on.
But sooner or later it will succumb to this
repeated abuse and gastritis and ulcers
will be the painful result.
Hot spicy foods can also cause a burning
of this stomach lining. Black pepper,
hot chili peppers and many other hot peppers
as well as some other spices have substances
in them which cause a burning of
the tongue when eaten and later, after the
burn has been washed from the mouth,
continue their burning in the stomach
and throughout their passage through the
intestines. These spicy foods should be
avoided for your stomach’s sake.
Vinegar is another cause of ulcers. Vinegar
is great stuff — for cleaning windows!
But that same action that cuts through the
grime on your windows can cut through
the mucus protecting your
stomach wall. Drug companies
must do extensive
testing of their products
such as antacids and other
medications for stomach
ulcers. Do you know how
they test them to see if they
help to heal ulcers or not?
First, they take rats and
give them vinegar to drink
until they develop ulcers.
Then they give these rats
their various medications
to see how well they work in
helping to heal the ulcers. So, if you would
also like to test some of their medications
for ulcers you can just eat pickles until you
get an ulcer and then go to the drug store
and take some of these medicines and see
if they help to heal your ulcer too.
Aspirin, and other medicines (Motrin,
Advil, Aleve, Naprosyn, etc.) commonly
16

taken for arthritis or other pains are also
common causes of stomach ulcers.
The obvious sensible solution to ulcers
is just stop doing what
caused the ulcer and let the
stomach heal itself. But the
pharmaceutical industry
has another way: just use
their medications regularly
and then you can keep on
eating whatever you want
without pain — or at least
you can relieve the pain
when it gets too bad with
some of their medications.
Antacids, like Mylanta or Maalox neutralize
the acid in the stomach and thus
stop its burning action on the stomach
wall. But think — that also means that
you have stopped the digestive action as
well, and the whole purpose of the stomach
is to digest food. Do you really want
to shut that process down and pass along
undigested food for your intestines to try
to process? This is not really such a great
solution.
Many other medications work by blocking
the stomach cells from making acid
and other digestive enzymes. Zantac,
Pepcid, Prilosec, and many more similar
drugs are taken regularly by many for
these conditions and the result is the same
as with the antacids in that they stop the
burning and they shut down digestion.
We now also know that these drugs affect
other parts of the body as well, resulting
in increased numbers of fractures of the
hip and wrist and increased pneumonias.
They also block the release in the stomach
of the factor necessary for
the absorption of vitamin
B12 resulting in B12 deficiencies.
We have been counseled
by God to avoid the
use of alcohol, tobacco,
tea, coffee, vinegar, hot
spices, and drugs. If we
follow this advice we can
protect the stomach so
that it can continue its
important functions, and even if we have
developed gastritis and ulcers from ignoring
this advice, the good news is that we
can repent and return to obedience to this
counsel, and the stomach will rapidly repair
the damage.
The Symbols and the
Purpose of the Parable
1.
Though the parable does not overtly identify the meaning of each symbol,
what do you suppose each of the following symbols represents?
The father represents ________________. (Hint: John 16:27)
The younger son represents the _____________ and ___________. (Hint: Luke 15:1)
The older son represents the ______________ and _____________. (Hint: Luke 15:2)
The killing of the fatted calf represents the death of ____________. (Hint: Leviticus 9:2-3)
The owner of the swine symbolizes________________. (Hint: Revelation 18:2-3)
The best robe represents “the robe of ___________________.” (Isaiah 61:10)
The father’s house symbolizes the ________________. (Hint: 1 Timothy 3:15)
2.
Christ’s central purpose in teaching this parable was to illustrate the
matchless love of God and to condemn the self-righteous and condemnatory
spirit of the _______________ and ____________ (Luke 15:1-2).
22

Note: It is ironic that Jesus, who was holy, blameless and undefiled, attracted the most
vile and filthy of sinners to Himself. The “scum of the earth” was attracted to the purest
being in the universe. On the other hand, those who were undefiled in their own estimation,
felt very uncomfortable in the presence of Jesus.
The Pharisees and Scribes knew they were cherishing sin on the inside and tried to cover it
up on the outside. This is why they felt so uncomfortable in the presence of Jesus. They knew
He could read them like a book. On the other hand, the publicans and sinners knew that they
were sinners and had nothing to hide from Jesus so they felt comfortable in His presence.
The Younger Son’s
Early View of His Father
1.
Why did the younger son ask for his inheritance and leave home? “This
younger son had become weary of the ___________ of his father’s house. He
thought that his ___________ was restricted.” “In his restless youth the prodigal
looked upon his father as ___________ and ____________ (COL 198, 204)
Note: The younger son felt restricted by the laws of his father house. He looked upon his
father as a taskmaster and himself as a slave. He wanted freedom and independence to
live his life as he saw fit.
2.
How does the younger son’s view of his father describe the view of the
sinner toward God? “They [unrepentant sinners] regard Him as watching
to _____________ and condemn, as unwilling to receive the sinner so long as
there is a _________ excuse for not helping him. His ________ they regard as
a ______________ upon men’s happiness, a burdensome ___________ from
which they are glad to escape.” (COL 204)
3.
How did the younger son view the present as compared with the future? “He is
bent on _________ enjoyment, and cares not for the _________.” (COL 199)
Note: The spirit of the younger son at this stage is very similar to that of Esau, Jacob’s
older son (see, Hebrews 12:15-17) but with a different ending. Esau did not care about the
birthright, he only cared for his present moment of hunger! The younger son lives for the
here and now, not for the sweet by and by.
23

4.
With what words did the younger son display his spirit of selfishness?
“Father, ___________ me the portion of goods that falleth to
__________.” (Luke 15:12)
The Younger Son Leaves Home
1.
Why do you suppose the younger son went into a “far country”?
(Luke 15:13) ____________________________________________.
Note: The father knew that reasoning with his son was fruitless because the son was full
of self-sufficiency. The father did not force his son to stay; he gave him freedom of choice
to leave home.
2.
What attitude did the younger son have upon his departure from
home? “With money in plenty, and _____________ to do as he likes,
he _______________ himself that the desire of his heart is reached. There
is no one to say, Do not do this, for it will be an injury to yourself; or, Do this,
because it is right.” (COL 199)
3.
What kind of lifestyle did the younger son live when he left home? He
“wasted his substance with _______________ living.” (Luke 15:13).
Note: For a while things went well. He had fun partying and playing around. He had loads
of friends. He felt free and unrestricted to do his own thing. At last no rules or regulations!
“The wealth which he has selfishly claimed from his father he squanders upon harlots. The
treasure of his young manhood is wasted. The precious years of life, the strength of intellect,
the bright visions of youth, the spiritual aspirations–all are consumed in the fires of lust.”
(COL 199-200)
The Enslavement of the Younger Son
1.
What happened to the younger son after he squandered his father’s
goods? “And when he has spent all, there arose a mighty ____________
24

in that land; and he began to be in ____________.” (Luke 15:14)
Note: When we separate ourselves from God and his family (church), we lose our freedom
and dignity and become slaves of sin. The young man had thought that freedom
from the father’s law meant joy and happiness but he now found out that it brought bitterness
and pain!
2.
Where did the younger son end up when calamity struck? “And he went
and ____________ himself to a citizen of that country; and he sent him
into his fields to feed ____________.” (Lk. 15:15)
Note: The expression “joined himself” in the Greek means “to glue together”. That is to
say, he was bound to another as by glue. His freedom came to a screeching halt and he
now became the slave of the “citizen of that country.”
3.
How does Ellen White describe the younger son’s bondage? “To a Jew
this [working with swine] was the most menial and degrading of employments.
The youth who has boasted of his ____________________, now
find himself a _____________. He is in the worst _____________—‘holden
with the cords of his sins.’ The glitter and tinsel that enticed him have disappeared,
and he feels the burden of his ____________.” (COL 200)
4.
5.
Which two commandments did the younger brother especially break?
(See Exodus 20:12, 14) ____________________________________
What did the father mean when he said: “For this my son was
____________, and is _____________ again.” (Luke 15:24; Ephesians
2:12, 13). In what sense was the son dead while he was away from home?
__________________________________________________________.
In what sense was the son alive when he came home? __________________
_________________________________________________________.
6.
Who do you suppose is represented by the “citizen of that country?”
(Luke 15:15 in the light of Revelation 18:2 and Mark 5:12-13)
The Return Home
1.
What happened when the younger son hit rock bottom? “He came to
___________________.” (Luke 15:17)
Note: While he was away from home, he was “out of it.” “The deceptive power that Satan
had exercised over him was broken.” (COL 202) Now, through the influence of the Holy
Spirit, he regained his senses and began thinking straight. While he was in the “far country”
he was not himself because he was the slave of another.
2.
What is it that wooed the younger son to come home? “How many
hired servants of my father’s have _____________ enough and to
______________, and I perish with hunger?” (Luke 15:17)
3.
Ellen White describes the drawing power of the father: “Miserable
as he was, the prodigal found hope in the conviction of his father’s
__________. It was that love which was ______________ him toward
home.” (COL 202)
4.
In Romans 2:4 the apostle Paul assures us that the
“_________________ of God leads us to ___________________.”
5.
How does the son’s prepared speech reveal that his repentance was
genuine? “I have ____________ against heaven and before thee and am
no more ____________ to be _____________ thy son.” (Luke 15:18-19)
6.
Notwithstanding the drawing power of his father’s love, the younger
brother has a stinted view of that love. How do we know this? “And [I]
am no more worthy to be called thy __________: make me as one of thy hired
________________.” (Luke 15:19)
Note: Whereas when the son left home he manifested his selfishness by saying to his
father, “give me,” he now shows a spirit of humility by saying to his father, “make me.”
26

7.
What indication do we have that the father was anxiously awaiting for
the return of his son? “But when he was yet a ___________ way off, his
father _________ him.” (Luke 15:20)
Note: Ellen White beautifully remarks: “If you take even ________ step toward Him
[God] in repentance, He will hasten to enfold you in his arms of _____________ love.
… The very ____________ reaching out of the heart after God is known to Him. Never a
__________ is offered, however faltering, never a _________ shed, however secret, never
a sincere ____________ after God cherished, however feeble, but the Spirit of God goes
forth to meet it. Even ____________ the prayer is uttered or the yearning made known,
grace from Christ goes forth to ___________ the grace that is working upon the human
soul.” (COL 206)
8.
Thought Question: Why do you suppose (in contrast to the shepherd
in the parable of the lost sheep) the father did not seek his son in
the far away place? ____________________________________________
9.
How did the father reveal his love for the reckless son? He “had
_______________, and ___________, and fell on his ___________,
and ___________ him.” (Luke 15:20)
10.
Is there any indication that the father rebuked his son or put him on
probation? _________
Note: “In the parable there is no taunting, no casting up to the prodigal of his evil course. The
son feels that the __________ is forgiven and forgotten, blotted out _____________.”
(COL 204). The son’s behavior deserved the sternest rebuke yet the father received him
with open arms. This is grace—unmerited favor!
11.
What blessings did the father bestow on his wayward son? To satisfy
his hunger the father killed the fatted ___________ (Luke 15:23).
For his tired feet the father provided new ____________ (Luke 15:22). To
replace his filthy, smelly garments the father provided the best __________
(Luke 15:22). For his ragged hands, the father provides his very own signet
___________ (Luke 15:22).
27

12.
What is represented by the son’s filthy rags and the father’s best robe?
(Carefully study Isaiah 64:6; Genesis 3:21; Isaiah 61:10; Zechariah
3:1-5; Revelation 7:13-14 and 19:7-8) ______________________________
13.
What is represented by the killing of the fatted calf? “And he said
unto Aaron, ‘Take thee a young ___________ for a ___________
offering” (Leviticus 9:2).
14.
The son had carefully prepared the speech he would make when he
got home. Which part of his speech was cut short? ______________
____________________________________________ (Luke 15:18-19, 21)
Note: “No opportunity is given him to ask a servant’s place. He is a son, who shall be honored
with the best the house affords, and whom the waiting men and women shall respect
and serve.” (COL 204)
15.
How did the household react when the younger son returned
home? “Let us eat and be ___________. … And they began to be
__________ … he heard __________ and _________” (Luke 15:23-25, 29).
Note: The Greek word for music is sumphonia and the word for dancing is xoron. That
is, the father called out the symphony and the choir!
The Riddle of the Older Son
1.
Whom does the older son symbolize? “By the elder son were represented
the unrepenting ___________ of Christ’s day, and also the
______________ in ____________ age, who look with contempt upon those
whom they regard as ______________ and sinners.” (COL 209)
2.
How did he older brother show his disdain for both his father and his
older brother? He did not address his father as “father” (Luke 15:29-30)
and he referred to his brother as “__________ son” (Luke 15:29).
28

3.
How did the older son reveal his arrogance and self-sufficiency? “Lo,
these _________ years do I ____________ thee, neither transgressed
I at _________ time thy _______________: and yet thou never gavest me a
kid, that I might make merry with my friends” (Luke 15:29).
Note: The older son refused even to enter the house (Lk. 15:28). He has served his father,
not because he loved him but because he wanted his father’s recognition and reward. He
was the consummate legalist. He was a son with a servant’s mentality. He thought he had
to earn his father’s inheritance by his hard work. The older brother was lost at home as
many legalists are lost in church!
4.
What two things characterize a legalist? The older son dwelt “upon his
________ life in his father’s house as a round of unrequited service, and then
places in mean __________the favor shown to the son just returned.” (COL 207)
Note: This is the most deadly of all sins. How can God help someone who feels like he
needs none? This sin characterized the rich young ruler (Matthew 19:16-22), the workers
in the vineyard (Matthew 20:1-12), the Pharisee (Luke 15:9-14) and the Laodicean church
(Revelation 3:14-21).
5.
When we truly repent from sin, what will be the result? “When you
see yourselves as sinners saved only by the love of your heavenly Father,
you will have tender ____________ for others who are suffering under
____________.” (COL 210)
Note: The older son complained to his father: “You killed the fatted calf for that sinful son
of yours but you never even killed a kid in recognition of my loyalty to you.” What the older
son is saying is this: “You have done the maximum to reward a sinner while you have not
even done the minimum to reward a righteous person like me.”
6.
Why are we not told in the story how the older son reacted to his father’s
logic? “Did the elder brother repent of his jealousy and hardheartedness?
Concerning this, Christ was ____________. For the parable was
still ______________, and it rested with His hearers to determine what the
outcome should be.” (COL 209)
