Columbia Land Conservancy
Offers New Walk Book
CONSERVANCY NEWS
Arevised, expanded edition of the 1995 book Walks by Protected Land is now available
at the Columbia Land Conservancy and local bookstores. Written by Conservancy
Trustee Sheldon Evans, the book pays tribute to those who have protected
their land with conservation easements. The twenty walks range from the hills of New
Lebanon to the farmlands of Gallatin, with
the majority of walks on roads passing by
privately protected land.
“This new edition conveys my passion for the rural
landscapes of Columbia County,” remarked Mr. Evans.
“Without the vision of all of our easement donors,
Columbia County would be a different place.”
The unique guide features walks that lead to some of
the county’s most spectacular vistas, wildlife habitats, and
agricultural landscapes. Primarily confined to rural
roads, these are mainly walks, not hikes, enabling people
of varying abilities the opportunity to enjoy. The guide
provides descriptive information, clear directions, and
details about mileage and parking.
The earlier version of the book, a local favorite, has
been out of print for two years. CLC extends its gratitude
to the several CLC members who provided financial
support and to an anonymous donor who contributed
$5,000 toward the new publication. Their support was
critical to CLC’s ability to publish this guide once again.
To purchase copies of Walks by Protected Land, contact
your local bookstore or Emily Warrington at the Conservancy
office at (518) 392-5252 ext. 203 or email at
tax, shipping and handling. Proceeds from the book will
support the Conservancy’s programs to protect working
farmland, wildlife habitat, and rural open space in
Columbia County. ❧
