annual report

saving our nation’s farmland
American Farmland Trust (AFT) is the nation’s
leading nonprofit organization dedicated to
saving America’s farm and ranch land, promoting
environmentally sound farming practices, and
keeping family farmers on their farms. American
Farmland Trust was founded in 1980 by a group
of farmers and citizens concerned about the rapid
loss of farmland to sprawl development. Since
then, American Farmland Trust has helped save
millions of acres of our country’s working lands.
from the leadership
Our Nation’s Farmland” is a new phrase
we’ve adopted here at American Farmland Trust
“Saving
to describe what we do and why our work is
so important.
From the beginning, saving farmland has always been
at the forefront of our mission. A little over 30 years ago,
American Farmland Trust was a fledgling group launched
by farmers and conservationists to study and take action
to address the wasteful development that was paving over
farm and ranch land from New England’s green pastures
to the Midwestern prairie’s plentiful fields to California’s
irreplaceable fruit and vegetable growing valleys.
Our organization and supporters believed then—and
still believe today—that farmland is America’s most critical
natural resource. Our wildlife and plants depend on it for
habitat. Much of the nation’s water supply courses through it.
The foliage and soil on our farms help cool the atmosphere.
And, of course, we all depend on America’s fertile fields to
produce the bounty of foods that nourish us and keep our
future secure.
We both come from farm backgrounds and understand
just how important it is for farmers and ranchers to have
the support of an organization like American Farmland
Trust—and the support of donors like you. Jon’s family calls
the productive corn and soybean fields of Illinois home. And
Miranda founded a cattle ranch in Montana, where she raises
and sells Simmental and Angus bulls.
Over three decades, American Farmland Trust has
pioneered the real-life tools, techniques and policies that
actually work
to save farm
and ranch
land. Through
our advocacy
and outreach,
we’ve helped
communities all
over the country
put them to work
saving land. And today, we are a strong national organization
that influences farm, food and conservation policy from the
halls of the U.S. Congress to state capitols to local town halls.
We’re proud of the work we did—with your help—over the
past year to continue American Farmland Trust’s land-saving
legacy, from launching the next phase of our pivotal farm
bill campaign to our ground-breaking work helping farmers
protect water quality on a grand scale. You don’t have to be
from a farm background to understand the importance of this
work. America’s greatest natural resource—which sustains all
of our lives—depends on it.
Thank you for standing with us in these varied and vital
efforts to protect and steward America’s valuable working
lands. Our accomplishments are your accomplishments.
successes
American Farmland Trust is proud of its work in 2011
to protect and steward America’s working lands.
Here are a few of our key successes from around
the country:

Ramped up farmer outreach, research and advocacy efforts
in order to transform national farm and food policy in the
upcoming farm bill. Our Agenda 2012: Transforming U.S.
Farm Policy for the 21st Century, released last fall, includes
innovative proposals for protecting more farm and ranch
land; accelerating conservation efforts that safeguard
clean water, air and wildlife; and supporting new market
opportunities that keep farmers on the land and cultivate
new and beginning farmers.

Succeeded in making great strides in our work to help
farmers grow healthy crops while protecting water quality.
In the eight state Ohio River basin, we’ve developed
support among agricultural leaders and are on track to
start recruiting farmers to participate in an innovative
pilot project that will help create the nation’s largest
water-quality trading program by 2014.
Expanded our Nutrient BMP Challenge® program in
Illinois and across the nation to reduce the amount
of fertilizer flowing from farm fields into America’s
waterways. This work includes our continued efforts in
the Chesapeake Bay to help farmers in Maryland, Virginia
and Pennsylvania safeguard water quality.

Helped to save wisconsin’s fledgling farmland protection
program—which AFT fought to create in 2009—when
Governor Scott Walker called for eliminating the
program. A high priority for AFT in 2011, we went to work
mobilizing farmers and citizens. The state legislature
listened, keeping the program intact and restoring
its funds.
Attracted leaders in agriculture, the environment and
rural development through our National Agricultural
Landscapes Forum, co-hosted with USDA Natural
Resources Conservation Service in washington, d.c., to
share and collaborate around ideas for protecting the
nation’s landscape and keeping rural America thriving.

Sought solutions in California through the Bay Area
Agricultural Sustainability Project, helping farmers and
ranchers thrive while, at the same time, they protect the
environment and produce more locally-grown food. The
Bay Area has lost nearly 20 percent of its most fertile
cropland in the last 18 years.
Launched efforts in New York to help transfer farms
and assist a new generation to secure farmland and
succeed in farming. Over the next two decades, as much
as 400 million acres of farm and ranch land in America
is projected to change hands. Forums including farmers,
land trusts, government officials and others in the Hudson
River Valley and western New York identified strategies
for helping young farmers acquire farmland while easing the
transition from one farming generation to the next.

Presented, along with the Rhode Island Agricultural
Partnership, a five-year strategic plan for agriculture to
Governor Lincoln Chaffee and Rhode Island legislators. A
Vision for Rhode Island Agriculture—the culmination of a
year’s outreach to the state’s diverse farming community—
will guide state officials, industry leaders, and food and
farming advocates in building a stronger and more resilient
farm and food system.
Helped fruit and vegetable farmers reduce their pesticide
use through continued projects with the Environmental
Protection Agency. In Michigan, for instance, our
collaborators helped cherry growers control fruit flies, while
in Indiana, on-farm visits, web-based videos and “farmers
teaching farmers” workshops are helping Indiana apple
growers transition away from high-risk pesticides.
Highlighted farmland protection efforts in Washington’s
Puget Sound with a “report card” ranking of farmland
protection programs in the 12 counties of the Sound region.
We recognized several important strides being made in
conservation practices, and recommended critical changes
needed to protect agricultural land before it’s lost forever.
Assisted hundreds of farmers and communities around the
country in protecting their working lands and planning for
the future through the Farmland Information Center’s
www.farmlandinfo.org website and toll-free hotline.
“
I learned a lot about farming back when my husband and I lived in Vermont. We were friends
with a couple who owned a dairy farm, and that is when we saw how relentless it is to be a
farmer. It really is a 365 day a year job. You’re milking the cows twice a day, cleaning up and just
working so hard every minute. To me, it’s heroic to be a farmer, especially these days. To be so
dependent on the weather, the markets, and other things you don’t have control over, and to still
stick to farming as a way of life—you’d have to be heroic. I give to environmental organizations
and land trusts because I’ve always believed in protecting this way of life; however, some
organizations are concerned only with protecting open space and not farmland in particular.
That’s where American Farmland Trust stands out from the others. It protects open space for the
sake of farmland, and we could always use more of that. It provides healthy food, a better life, and
a more sustainable way forward for the future generations that will inhabit this Earth. ”
