From the Director’s Desk 

It Takes Love to Heal 

Dear Friends, 

It’s been several years since Zavaria passed through our doors, but her story is one 

that will always stick with me. The two-year-old “Santa Fe blend” dog came to our 

clinic with what appeared to be a superficial wound on her head and a leg injury. 

Zavaria’s owner thought maybe his beloved dog had cut herself while digging 

under a fence on his La Cienega area property, or, he thought, maybe she had 

been struck by a vehicle while loose in the neighborhood. A quick examination 

by our veterinarian, however, revealed a much more serious situation: Zavaria had 

been hit point-blank in the head with a three-blade hunting arrow and shot in the 

back leg with a small-caliber weapon. 

Like all animals that come through 

our open doors, our clinic staff went to 

work, doing what they could with Zavaria’s 

shattered back leg and cleaning her head 

wound. Unfortunately, we weren’t able to 

save her leg, but our clinic staff did save her 

life. We met up with Zavaria again recently, 

and I’m happy to say that she’s still one of 

the sweetest and most loving dogs I’ve met. 

The police have never been able to find those 

who injured her, but knowing Zavaria is alive 

and well-loved is a cherished thought for us. 

Those wishes for happy lives for all the 

animals in our care are what keep us going, 

and we know it’s what you expect from us. 

Our veterinary team, led by Dr. Jennifer Steketee, sees hurt, injured or sick 

dogs and cats every day of the year. The shelter clinic is a bustling place, and those 

who work there recognize the importance of the work they do; they know they 

are the only hope for many of their patients. 

The clinic staff also knows that we save lives not just by healing the sick 

and injured, but by spaying/neutering and vaccinating our region’s homeless 

animals. It’s our mission, and one that we hold dear, because we know animal 

overpopulation is at the root of animal suffering. 

Many of the animals who come through our doors are here for only a brief 

moment – some only need the right vaccinations, a bit of grooming and they are 

off to their new families. Others, like the ones you will read about in this edition of 

Animal Tracks, need much more from us. I am grateful to our compassionate and 

highly competent veterinary team because I know that for whatever time animals 

are with us, they will be cared for and loved – maybe for the first time in their lives. 

Let me thank you on behalf of our clinic, along with all the staff and 

volunteers here, for your continued support in making the Santa Fe Animal 

Shelter a loving and healing place.

A Hand in Need 

Community support provides a solid foundation to help the Shelter’s 

clinic keep up with a steady stream of homeless, injured or at-risk animals 

Hannah is a gorgeous 

husky mix with 

beautiful brown eyes. 

She’s the kind of dog 

who can melt your 

heart with just one look. 

In early November, however, 

Hannah was just another stray dog 

who happened to be in the wrong 

place at the wrong time: She was hit 

by a vehicle and left to die by the side 

of the road. 

Luckily for her, a family spotted 

her crumpled body and rushed her 

to a nearby clinic for help. She was 

stabilized and given medication to 

control her pain. Because she was a 

stray, she was transferred to the Shelter 

for further treatment with the hope the 

family would find her. 

“Hannah had a fractured humerus 

(the long bone in the front leg) and 

that’s very painful,” said Dr. Jennifer 

Steketee, the Shelter’s medical director. 

We helped ease her suffering and then 

went to work.” 

While efforts were made to find 

her owners — she was wearing a collar 

but with no 

identification 

or microchip 

– the Shelter 

staff quickly 

determined that 

her leg could be 

saved through 

orthopedic 

surgery. Dr. 

Rick Snook, a 

talented surgeon 

who joined 

the Shelter 

veterinary team after many years 

leading nonprofit veterinary programs 

in California, took up her cause and 

spent hours with her before, during 

and after surgery. 

“I had a good feeling about 

her leg,” Snook said, noting that 

the fracture required three pins to 

stabilize. “It was a clean break, and I 

was sure the leg would be fine after 

the surgery.” 

While a temporary setback 

required additional surgery a few 

weeks later, Hannah continued to heal 

in foster care until she was deemed 

ready for adoption. Her foster parent, 

Evelyn, says Hannah – whose original 

owner never came forward— will 

make a perfect animal companion. 

“She’s an incredible, loving dog,” 

Evelyn says. “She’s well-mannered, 

house-trained, and through all her 

suffering has been extremely patient 

and sweet.” 

Recently, Hannah and all the 

people involved with saving her have 

been rewarded. Hannah found her 

new family — a family so moved 

by her story that they drove from 

Albuquerque to meet and adopt her.

to make happy endings for homeless 

animals like Hannah every day.

The Shelter’s three veterinarians, six 

veterinary technicians and dozens of 

volunteers ensure that every animal 

who comes through our doors gets 

the best care. Unfortunately, the type 

of trauma that Hannah suffered is

something our clinic workers all too 

often encounter. 

“We get that exact scenario, but 

with a different dog or cat and a 

different bone, many times a week,” 

Dr. Steketee said. “That’s not unusual. 

But what’s amazing at our shelter is 

that we have the kind of resources 

to do this kind of work. In the vast 

majority of shelters, Hannah would 

have lost her leg or worse – she would 

have been euthanized.” 

Very few shelters have a 

veterinarian trained in orthopedic 

surgery, she said, or the equipment 

needed to do the exacting work. In 

addition, with many shelters forced 

to euthanize so many animals because 

of overpopulation, dogs like Hannah 

wouldn’t normally stand a chance. 

“In many places, there is just 

no space to hold animals who need 

extensive care or the time it takes to 

anything but routine. While spaying 

and neutering Shelter animals form 

the primary mission of the clinic, 

those surgeries are just one of the 

many duties thrust upon the staff. 

“Every day is different and 

completely unpredictable,” she said. 

“You never know what animal control 

is going to bring through the doors 

at any given moment. It could be

heal,” she said. “We’re fortunate that

have come to expect from us.”

On any given day, the shelter clinic 

is a cacophony of meows, yelps and 

howls. The noise level, along with 

the hustle and bustle of saving lives, 

is something staff and volunteers 

eventually get used to. 

“It’s a very busy place,” Dr. 

Steketee said. “We have a lot of 

animals who are just waking up 

from anesthesia that tend to be 

very vocal. And then we have 

animals in here who are ill and 

sometimes we have puppies that 

squeal as puppies do. It’s just a 

hectic, loud place.” 

And much like an 

emergency clinic anywhere, 

the Shelter clinic is a place 

where the routine is 

an animal that’s been hit by a car, or 

found in someone’s yard, injured or 

sick. Or it could be an animal that’s 

been brought in as a result of a neglect 

situation. Every time you feel you’ve 

just caught up, a sick or injured 

animal will come in. There’s never a 

dull moment.” 

Dr. Steketee came to shelter 

veterinary work as a fluke, she said, 

but has grown to see it as the defining 

moment in her career. As a recent 

veterinary school graduate in 1997, 

Dr. Steketee said she was looking to 

relocate to Northern New Mexico and 

took a position at the Española Valley 

Humane Society. She considered it a 

temporary step. 

“It just really opened my eyes to 

animal sheltering and what a huge 

influence shelter medicine has on 

the general population of our pets,” 

she said. “I ended up taking a job 

in private practice so I could further 

my skills since I was a fairly new 


graduate, but I really tried to be an 

advocate for shelter animals during 

that whole time.” 

Dr. Steketee returned to sheltering 

work after nine years in private 

practice. While she notes that privatepractice 

veterinarians are important in 

all aspects of animal care, she sees her 

work at the Shelter as critical. 

“Of course, most of private 

practice is good, and important for the 

general care and health of the whole 

animal,” she said. “But I came to see 

some of it as unnecessary – things like 

declawing a cat or docking a puppy’s 

tail. Some of these things can be really 

superficial when you realize just how 

important population control is, and 

how many animals just aren’t receiving 

basic care.”

Every animal that comes though 

the clinic doors has a story, but the 

animals aren’t talking — they are in 

pain, or need immediate attention. 

The staff is there to comfort them and 

make sure they are healthy. 

“Most of the strays and the 

homeless animals that come in have 

never been seen by a veterinarian,” 

she said. “They’re skinny, matted and 

scared. But once they get that care and 

know they are safe, they become so 

trusting and loving.” 

The clinic’s fast-paced 

environment is a draw for many of 

the volunteers and staff, including 

Dr. Snook, who returned to the 

Shelter after an eight-year absence. 

Dr. Snook said he is committed to 

animal sheltering and the sometimes 

challenging patients who come 

through the doors. 

On a recent Monday, Dr. Snook 

had repaired a kitten’s back leg 

fracture, stitched up a large wound 

on a puppy and was about to tackle a 

serious thigh-bone break that would 

require several hours and several pins 

to secure. 

That kind of work gets 

Dr. Snook’s blood going. 

“We used to try and set all the 

bones back in the exact same place,” 

Dr. Snook said, noting an x-ray of a 

dog that had multiple fractures. “Now 

it’s more like gardening. We let the

Burrito, a tiny Chihuahua puppy, was brought 

into the clinic in September with dozens of 

open wounds all over his body. We’ll never 

know how he initially got his injuries – either 

by a human or in an attack by another animal 

– but he developed an immune disorder 

that made the wounds difficult to heal. After 

several consultations with some of the nation’s 

top specialty veterinarians, the clinic staff 

was able to develop a treatment protocol 

that included a special diet and alternative 

therapies that helped turn him around. 

We think the love that Burrito received 

from his Facebook fans helped along the 

way – we know that Zach and Kristina were 

spellbound by his story, fell in love with him, 

and, after fostering him for a few weeks, 

adopted him. He may always need extra 

treatment, but this special boy is worth it.

Dr. Rebecca TomasiC: 

‘Lucky’ to be at the Shelter 

As a longtime veterinarian in private 

practice, Dr. Rebecca Tomasic said she 

thought she understood the plight of 

homeless animals. But since joining the 

clinic staff in November, the extent of 

the pet overpopulation problem has 

been stunning. 

“I was aware there were some 

animals not getting spayed or neutered 

and there were unwanted puppies and 

kittens every year,” she said. “But I don’t 

think I knew a tenth of the problem. Everybody 

knows, sure, there are cats running 

around having babies, but I don’t 

think they realize just how bad it is.” 

Dr. Tomasic, a Pennsylvania native, 

always knew she wanted to be a 

veterinarian. Her father was a doctor, 

and she was aware of medicine and 

medical practice. 

“I was 5 years old when I found out 

that dogs and animals had their own 

doctors and they were called veterinarians, 

and that’s what I wanted to do,” 

she said. “I took a circuitous route to get 

here, but I did.” 

After 28 years in private practice, 

mainly at a Santa Fe clinic, Dr. Tomasic 

decided to try her hand at animal 

sheltering. She knew the pace would 

be busy, she said, but the number of 

animals that come to the clinic for altering 

or injury is still surprising. But the 

work is rewarding, she said, relating the 

story of stray cat who came in recently 

with a broken leg. 

“We decided to get some x-rays for 

a full assessment and it turns out she 

was pregnant,” she said. “She wouldn’t 

have been able to deliver those with 

a broken pelvis. Every day it feels like 

you’re doing something good – maybe 

just being kind to an animal that hasn’t 

had anyone be kind to it before. I just 

feel lucky.”

The variety of cases at the Shelter 

keeps Dr. Snook hopping. 

“I saw more trauma here in my 

first few weeks than I did during my 

entire four years in Los Angeles,” 

he said. “The people who work 

here are amazing. They have a lot of 

compassion for animals. It’s great to be 

around them.”

All animals that come into the 

Shelter get a veterinary examination, 

no matter what their circumstances, 

and vaccinations. Keeping infectious 

diseases out 

of the Shelter 

is critical and 

something the 

entire staff considers 

one of its 

primary duties. 

Hands are 

washed often, 

towels are 

plentiful and 

clean, and trays 

of disinfectant 

are spread 

throughout 

the Shelter for 

people to step 

in to coat the 

soles of their 

shoes. That 

helps stop the 

spread of disease. 

“You take a bunch of animals 

that are previously unvaccinated and 

you put them together in a shelter 

environment, you’re going to have 

some type of infectious diseases,” said 

Dr. Steketee. “Obviously sanitation 

is really important and trying to keep 

the stress levels as low as possible, 

because stressed animals, just like 

people are going to get sick.” 

Few people realize just how much 

effort goes in to the well-being of 

every Shelter animal, Dr. Steketee

work rewarding. “You really are helping 

animals,” Marcia said. Added Jane: 

“The staff here is super.” 

said. That’s why keeping companion 

animals healthy and in their homes 

is important. She encourages people 

to have a relationship with their 

veterinarian to prevent health issues 

from becoming serious and expensive. 

“There are a lot of people who 

really care about animals,” Dr. Steketee 

said. “But there definitely needs to be 

better education about how to care for 

animals appropriately.” 

Aside from a healthy diet and 

protection from weather extremes, 

making sure an animal is safe and not 

roaming about is equally important, 

she said, along with spaying and 

neutering. Animals that are inside or in 

a secure yard are 

safe animals. 

“That’s 

how most 

animals end up 

here,” she said. 

“They went 

out wandering, 

got hit by a car 

or got in some 

trouble and are 

at the shelter. 

If you take an 

animal that’s 

not spayed or 

neutered and 

they are not 

contained, they 

will roam. That’s 

their nature; it’s 

going to happen 

and they will be putting themselves in 

harm’s way.” 

Every department in the Shelter 

works hard to care for each animal that 

needs attention, Dr. Steketee noted. 

“We are a team, and I hope 

people realize just how many people it 

takes to take care of animals here,” 

she said. “From the kennel workers 

to the behavior team and to our 

technicians who run all over this place 

transferring animals from the clinic to 

adoptions to the intake building. It’s a 

major effort.”

It wasn’t hard to fall in love 

with Nicholas, a Chihuahua mix 

puppy found abandoned with three shattered legs 

off a busy Santa Fe street shortly before Christmas. 

We’re not sure what happened to him, but when he 

arrived at the clinic, our staff knew this little guy 

was in pain. Despite several 

surgeries and gallant efforts to 

save a severely damaged front 

leg, this 6-week-old survivor 

never seemed to be in a bad 

mood; he was always ready for a 

quick kiss or comforting hug. 

Cody, a Santa Fe 

acupuncturist, followed his 

remarkable story on our 

Facebook page and knew he 

was the dog for her. After several weeks in foster 

care, Cody came to visit Nick and it was love at first 

lick! The lack of a front leg has not slowed this little 

guy down - like many “tripods,” he doesn’t even 

seem to know he’s missing an appendage. 

We know one thing for sure – he’s not 

missing any love!

Our clinic team is made up of dedicated 

professionals. Here’s a look at those who work 

on the front line of animal care: 

Megan Rodriguez 

Megan’s been at the Shelter 

off-and-on for 10 years, starting 

at the old Shelter on Cerrillos 

Road. She’s worked in private 

practice, and loves helping 

animals and their owners. But 

she’s drawn to the Shelter‘s 

homeless animals: “They need the love,” she said. 

“They need the people to help them.”

A locksmith by trade, Tommy 

has been at the Shelter four 

years and has been working 

at the clinic for more than two 

of those years. He’s become a 

strong proponent of spaying 

and neutering and loves working at the clinic, 

where he learns something new just about every 

day. “I think we are very lucky to have the facility 

here and the veterinarians,” he said. “Very lucky.”

started at the Shelter as a kennel 

care worker and was drawn to 

the clinic because of her love 

of animals. The direct help she 

and everyone at the clinic can 

give to homeless animals makes 

her proud of her work and of the Shelter. “It’s always 

busy, but as a team we can really make a difference 

for all the animals that come through our doors.”

Dora started in animal care, cleaning 

kennels. She was encouraged 

to work in the clinic and has 

never looked back. She’s often 

the first person at the Shelter

happy is important to her. “I love it here,” she said. “I 

love helping the doctors in surgery and helping the 

animals get healthy for a new family.”

Blazing a Path of Loving Kindness for All 

Anonymous donors offer a boost – and a challenge – to our Humane Education program

Being kind to animals may seem 

like a given. For some people, 

however, having a close relationship 

with a companion animal 

– even considering them a 

part of the family – may seem unusual. 

That’s why our Humane Education 

program is so important for the 

community and especially for our 

children. Tom Alexander, our Humane 

Education Coordinator, reaches out 

to hundreds of children every year in 

their classrooms, in school auditoriums, 

in their clubs, at the Shelter, and 

one-on-one, patiently allowing many 

young people to understand for themselves 

how important it is to love and 

properly care for animals. 

The results are amazing. Many 

young people tell Tom that they never 

knew dogs had feelings or that keeping 

them chained-up 24-7 isn’t ideal. 

Every year, several classrooms have 

come to support Tom’s work through 

sponsoring animals, making gifts for 

the shelter, or simply making positive 

changes with their own animals. 

Now, thanks to a group of anony- 

Tom said. “One of my strong beliefs is 

that if animal neglect and abuse is to 

be reduced long-term, it must begin in 

the hearts and minds of New Mexico’s 

young people.” 

Tom, in addition to reaching out 

to schools and youth organizations, will 

lead this summer’s fourth year of Critter 

Camp. The popular camps allow children 

to see first-hand the Shelter’s work 

with animals, and how even the most 

fearful and withdrawn cats and dogs

the power to “effect both in positive 

ways that can last a lifetime.” 

The grant, with its recognition 

of the importance of humane education, 

has “re-energized and motivated 

me to strengthen my efforts and look 

for new ways to expand the program,” 

he said.

Santa Fe Animal Shelter’s canvassers conduct animal survey, offer licensing information 

Licenses are available from canvassers, at the Shelter, 

at the clinic, 2570 Camino Entrada, by mail or online at www. 

sfhumanesociety.org. Call 983-4309 ext. 606 for information. 

Canvassers with the Santa Fe Animal Shelter started hitting area streets in 

December, conducting a census of companion animals in the region and 

providing pet owners with important information about licensing. 

Dogs and cats in the city must be licensed by law, while the county 

requires that only dogs be licensed. But being compliant with the law 

isn’t the only reason to license pets. Licensing is the best way for wayward pets 

to get back to their owners, and it offers a guarantee that your pet is up-to-date 

on his or her rabies vaccination, a critical vaccine required by law. 

County licenses are $3 for altered animals and $10 for unaltered animals 

per year. In the city, fees are $10 for altered animals and $50 for unaltered 

animals. City residents have the option of purchasing 1-, 2-, or 3-year licenses 

and a 50 percent discount is offered to 

those age 65 years or older for altered 

animals.

Vaccinations Key 

to Controlling 

Rabies Exposure 

Animal control and vaccination 

programs have cut the number 

of reported human rabies to as 

few as five a year in the United 

States, according to a 

recent report in Veterinary 

Practice News. 

But despite the control 

of the virus in humans and 

domestic animals, authorities 

continue to battle the virus 

in wild populations, the News 

reports. And the virus can still 

have devastating effects in 

rural areas were vaccinations 

aren’t routine. Last spring, 

32 dogs, at least one cat and 

a number of livestock were 

euthanized near Carlsbad after 

they were exposed to rabies. 

Dr. Paul Ettestad, the New 

Mexico Department of Health’s 

public health veterinarian 

called it one of the most 

concentrated outbreaks of 

rabies that has been seen 

in New Mexico in decades. 

The deaths could have been 

prevented through proper 

vaccination, he noted, which is 

already required by state law. 

Human deaths from rabies 

in the past century in the U.S. 

have declined from 100 or 

more each year to an average 

of two or three, according to 

federal statistics. But the virus 

continues to plague some 

parts of the world, with 30,000- 

50,000 people dying from the 

infection each year. 

A Shot in the Right Spot 

New Mexico public officials, veterinarians mark World Rabies Day 

with free vaccinations at Santa Fe Animal Shelter 

State health officials and prominent veterinarians 

took part in a free rabies vaccination clinic in 

September at the Santa Fe Animal Shelter in 

recognition of World Rabies Day. 

Dr. Ray Powell, state Land Commissioner, 

Dr. Catherine Torres, then-cabinet secretary for the state 

Department of Health, Dr. Paul Ettestad, state Public 

Health Veterinarian, and Dr. Murt Byrne, president of 

the New Mexico Veterinary Medical Association and 

owner of Eldorado Animal Clinic attended the event, 

helping vaccinate dozens of dogs and cats for free. 

The World Health Organization estimates that 

more than 55,000 people die of rabies in the world each year, mainly in Asia and Africa. 

However, problems with rabies continue to persist in the nation. In 2012, six people and 

several hundred dogs and cats died of rabies in the U.S. New Mexico has been hard hit 

with rabies, especial in rural southern counties, were several unvaccinated pets had to be 

euthanized because they were exposed to rabies in the wildlife population. 

Events like World Rabies Day help to underscore the importance of rabies 

vaccinations, state health officials said. “Unvaccinated pets or pets not up-to-date on 

their rabies vaccination can be exposed to a rabid wild animal and put your family 

members at unnecessary risk and exposure to a very dangerous and fatal disease, 

Catherine Torres said at the event. 

Murt Byrne said his statewide association encouraged veterinarians around the state 

to give talks on rabies and pet health at local schools and to hold rabies vaccination 

clinics during the week of 

World Rabies Day. The 

clinics offer a chance for 

veterinarians not only to safeguard 

the animal from the 

deadly disease, but ensure 

the over-all health of the 

family pet. 

Murt said he hopes to 

expand the clinic next fall, 

working with the Shelter to 

vaccinate as many companion 

animals as possible. 

“Protecting our animals 

from this deadly disease is 

simple and inexpensive,” 

said state Land Commissioner 

Powell, who has a doctorate 

in veterinary medicine. 

“In addition, it protects 

our families from contracting 

rabies.” 


Paws at the Pen 

Providing a second chance for dogs and people 

A 

partnership with the 

Santa Fe Animal 

Shelter and the 

Penitentiary of New 

Mexico is transforming 

lives — both canine and human. Paws 

at the Pen, which officially launched 

in October, connects shelter dogs with 

specially selected inmates for intensive 

dog training and care. The program is a 

win-win for both dogs and the inmates, 

said Suzanne Fuqua, the Shelter’s 

director of Behavior and Training. 

The dogs selected for the program 

are typically canines that have been 

relinquished because of behavior issues, 

are not doing well in the shelter, or 

need more intensive training outside 

the shelter environment.

The inmates, who receive special 

training by shelter staff and volunteers, 

live full time with the dogs. The inmates 

work one-on-one with the dogs 

and teach basic skills such as sit, down, 

stand, stay, wait, controlled walking 

on a harness and to come when called. 

The dogs are also house- and cratetrained 

and may learn tricks like roll 

over and shake. 

The dogs graduate from this 

program knowing the kinds of things 

adopters want them to know. That 

leaves more time for just enjoying the 

relationship. 

“Every inmate who lives with and 

trains a dog is learning something 

about responsible pet ownership, 

proper dog behavior and humane 

caring for another being,” she said. 

“That’s something that can translate to 

the inmate’s life outside the pen.” 

The program has already had great 

success. Johnny Torres of Questa spotted 

Tobias online, met with him at the 

prison and adopted him immediately. 

Johnny said he was impressed with the 

dog and the two hit if off immediately. 

Tobias is now living the good life on 

the Torres ranch.

decided the beautiful black dog had to 

come home with him after his release. 

Daniel said working with the dogs 

was a rewarding experience, and that 

Beauregard would become a part of

“I have three grown sons who will 

accept him with all rights and love for 

better or worse,” he wrote Suzanne. 

“You can say I’m just like Beauregard, 

full of potential.”

Weezie Fund helps curb animal suffering 

Santa Fe artist Iris Vazquez has always been an animal 

lover. She’s nurtured and loved many cats and dogs 

throughout her life. 

But it wasn’t until a neighbor’s dog came to her 

door in the depths of winter looking for help that she 

fully understood the plight of homeless animals in Northern 

New Mexico. Now she’s created the Weezie Fund to support 

the Santa Fe Animal Shelter’s efforts to provide affordable 

spay or neuter to those who might not otherwise have the 

means for this important surgery. 

“I became involved with the Shelter when I had to call 

animal control to help this dog,” Iris recalled. “I made it clear 

that I wanted to help this dog and let them know that I was 

interested in the dog, should the owners not claim her.” 

The dog was eventually picked up 

by the owners – her neighbors – and 

they agreed to provide shelter for the 

dog’s comfort and safety. Iris, who 

has become something of a godmother 

to the dog, said the experience 

led her to realize she 

could do more. 

“In speaking with Mary Martin, [the Shelter’s executive 

director], I decided that the biggest need and the most help 

would be to help with spaying and neutering. There are so 

many people who can’t afford it,” she said. 

Iris is making a monthly contribution to the fund, which 

is named after her 18-year-old calico. Such a generous commitment 

to animals will make an impact in the community’s 

overpopulation problem, Mary said. So many people love 

their animals but don’t have the resources to help them. 

“People like Iris are so important,” she said. “This fund 

will provide dozens of surgeries for those who might not be 

able to afford it and will prevent so much suffering.” 

“I’m hoping it will do a little bit to put a dent in the 

problem of overpopulation and encourage people to spay 

or neuter their pets,” Iris said. “I often think about how we 

waste money on such frivolous stuff, when we really could 

be putting that money toward something that was going to 

help ease a problem.” 

Weezie is one of four companion animals in Iris’ household, 

including a ragamuffin cat, Teddy, 3, and two pugs, 

Mavis and Potus (President of the United States). The animals 

provide her with endless comfort and entertainment, Iris said.

Shopping Therapy to Help Animals 

Santa Fe Animal Shelter’s resale stores, Look What the Cat Dragged In and 

Look What the Cat Dragged In 2, benefit the region’s homeless animals 

Ellie and her big black dog, Jack, 

are inseparable. The two count 

on each other for support and 

after Ellie was diagnosed with 

cancer, Jack’s unconditional 

love helped her carry on through 

months of chemotherapy. 

The two are just some of the 

welcome regulars at Look What the 

Cat Dragged In, Santa Fe’s premier 

resale store that benefits the Santa Fe 

Animal Shelter. Anne Greene, assistant 

manager of the store, says volunteers 

and staff happily start the day 

with a biscuit for Jack and great deals 

for Ellie on designer clothes, beautiful 

furniture and treasures at the unique 

store in the city’s south side. 

For her part, Ellie calls her visits 

“shopping therapy,” and generously

donates items while at the same time 

discovering something new from the 

store’s diverse merchandise. That’s been 

the key to the store’s success since it 

opened in February 2010, said Mary 

Martin, the shelter’s executive director. 

“We have a dedicated crew of staff 

and volunteers who love the store and 

care deeply about the customers,” she 

said. “Many of the customers are the 

same people who donate their treasures 

to the store because they know 

every single dollar spent at the store 

goes to support the animals.” 

Most people who enter the store 

at 2570 Camino Entrada are stunned 

by the large, airy space and quality 

of merchandise, said manager Madison 

Flanagan. The staff is able to be 

selective about what is put out in the 

6,000-square-foot showroom because 

of premium donations, which include 

high-end fashions, a large book collection, 

collectibles, art, furniture and 

household goods. 

“This store is an amazing place for 

the community,” Flanagan said. “It 

helps people make a connection to the 

shelter and helping homeless animals. 

They know that when they come in 

here, anything they buy, whether it’s 

a $1 glass or a $500 pueblo pot, it all 

goes to the animals. That sets us apart 

from other resale stores.” 

In addition to the quality of merchandise, 

the store boasts some highly 

qualified and experienced volunteers. 

Several have found their time at The 

Cat, as it is often called, the highlight 

of their retirement years. Sally 

Greenberg, 88, spends many months 

away from her Washington, D.C. area 

home visiting her daughter in Santa 

Fe. The retired government professional 

has found her niche in books. 

“It’s a real opportunity for me to 

do something useful and at the same 

time very enjoyable,” she said. “I like 

to be where the action is, and I put in 

a good work week. Of course, it’s nice 

to do something that’s very useful, and 

this store supports the animal shelter.” 

Many customers know Sally by 

name and will often ask her about 

specific books. She’s happy to share 

her expertise with casual readers or 

the several booksellers who are regular 

customers. “I do know about where 

everything is and about what we 

have,” she said.

We 

have a dedicated crew of staff and 

volunteers who love the store and care 

deeply about the customers. 

Volunteers Don Brown, 66, and 

his partner of 40 years, Frank Adano, 

83, bring a flair to the store. While 

Brown’s background is in physical 

therapy, Adano studied set design and 

worked in theater and television. The 

two also operated an antique store 

in Florida and worked at that town’s 

humane society thrift store. 

They began volunteering at The 

Cat about a month after they moved 

to Santa Fe. Frank helps with displays, 

while Don sorts through donations, 

among other jobs. Frank’s displays, or 

vignettes as he calls them, capture the 

beauty of the varied donations. 

While the store’s bottom line is to 

support shelter programs, the store has 

truly become a community resource 

and a source for information about 

the shelter and animals. It helps that 

the store shares the same building as 

the shelter’s low-cost Spay/Neuter and 

Wellness Clinic. 

That connection to the shelter is 

an important distinction, said Madison, 

along with a sound business plan. 

Because of the tremendous success, the 

shelter plans to open a second store 

closer to downtown in March. 

Flanagan will manage that store, 

Look What the Cat Dragged In 2, 

541 W. Cordova Road, across from 

the Santa Fe Baking Co. She said 

she’s excited about bringing the store’s 

unique merchandise to a different area 

of town. 

“It will have its own character,” 

Flanagan said, “but will use this store 

as its model and foundation. It will 

have less space, but we will stock it 

with merchandise that people will love 

and that will be unique to the store. It 

will be a fresh, new space.” 

Flanagan, who has a background 

in retail, worked in several jobs at the 

Shelter, including adoption counselor 

and volunteer coordinator. While she 

loved working in retail, she said she 

never thought of it as a long-term 

career until she was able to combine 

her two interests. 

The Camino Entrada store will 

continue to offer customers the best 

in quality merchandise and customer 

experience, Greene said. 

“This is a community place,” 

said Greene, a former schoolteacher 

whose passion for animal welfare drew 

her first to the shelter as an adoption 

counselor and then to the store. “It’s a 

place where people come not only to 

shop, but to visit, to talk to us about 

animal issues, or to check out our latest 

donations,” she said. 

“There are people who come like 

clockwork, every day, like Ellie and 

Jack. She’ll pick up one or two items 

or drop something off, and on the 

way out, Jack will get his Milk Bone. 

Making people happy, whether it’s by 

adopting an animal or supporting the 

shelter through this store, is a wonderful 

way to start your day.”

Santa Fe Animal Shelter’s annual 

fundraiser helps animals all year long 

Hundreds of people and their 

better canine halves enjoyed 

an old-style country fair 

in October at the Santa Fe 

Animal Shelter’s annual 

Barkin’ Ball. 

The festive tradition was reimagined as 

a country fair, offering a fun-filled experience 

with carnival games, food booths and a 

general store. The Oct. 6 event also featured 

the usual favorites, such as the Pet Parade, a 

silent auction and great music by the female 

trio Buckarettes. 

Bill Hutchison, a former Shelter employee 

now living in Chicago, moderated the 

Pet Parade, offering special insights to the 

canine celebrities, many of whom took to 

the stage in festive bangles, scarves and even 

cowboy hats. Bill said he was happy to be 

among his old friends at the Shelter, especially 

the four-footed pals he’s watched mature 

during each ball. 

“The Barkin’ Ball has always been one 

of the highlights of the year,” Bill said. “It’s 

a time to reconnect with canines and people 

alike and simply celebrate the Shelter’s 

successes.” 

The casual county fair theme helped 

people get back to the basics of the annual 

event: a community celebration, said Mary 

Martin, the shelter’s executive director. 

“If it weren’t for the community support, 

our programs wouldn’t be nearly as 

successful as they have been,” Mary said. 

“Events like this remind us of just how 

wonderful our community is and the importance 

everyone here places on making 

Santa Fe a great place for pets, no matter 

what their circumstances.” 

It’s only fitting that the Barkin’ Ball 

allows people to party with their pets, she 

added. “I love that people have an opportunity 

to socialize with other pet-loving 

individuals as well as have their own pets 

with them,” she said. “We’ve worked hard to 

make this a wonderful happening, but most 

importantly, the Barkin’ Ball is critical to the 

Shelter and its ability to make a difference 

for pets and the people who love them.” 

Along with the special diversions that 

make a great event unique, this year’s ball 

also included games, a caricature artist, 

jugglers and a photo booth. The Country 

Store offered people an opportunity to buy 

treasures without having to bid on them, 

while the silent auction let people unleash 

their competitive spirit. 

Volunteers and staff are already meeting 

to organize next year’s Ball, tentatively 

scheduled for mid-October. It may take the 

form of an evening gala, with an enhanced 

silent auction that will include unique treasures, 

exquisite get-aways and one-of-a-kind 

gift certificates. Stay tuned!

When there’s a will 

there’s a way 

A gift to the Santa Fe Animal Shelter through your 

will or living trust is a powerful statement of your 

support for our mission: to reunite people with 

their lost animal companions; find homes for those 

animals who are abandoned, neglected or injured, 

support humane education; and reduce animal 

suffering through low-cost spaying and neutering 

programs. It may also provide a reduction in your 

taxable estate. 

The most common planned gift is a bequest 

through your will or living trust. You can arrange 

a gift of a specific amount, a percentage of your 

estate, or even all or part of the residuary of your 

estate. If you would like to make such a gift to the 

Santa Fe Animal Shelter, your attorney may wish to 

include language similar to the following: 

“I give, devise, and bequeath to Santa Fe Animal 

Shelter & Humane Society now or formally at 

100 Caja del Rio Rd., Santa Fe, NM 87507, (dollar 

amount or __ percent of the rest, residue, and 

remainder of my estate), to be used for its general 

purposes.” 

By offering all or a part of your legacy to the 

Santa Fe Animal Shelter, you will assure a solid 

future for all the animals of Northern New Mexico.

The power of Facebook 

Our Facebook fans are phenomenal! They 

give us support in so many ways, and we’re so 

thankful. Here’s a posting from Holly, a longtime 

follower who flew to Santa Fe to experience the 

Shelter and visit with an injured pup, Milagro. 

A HUGE shout out 

to ALL the people 

at the Shelter who 

made our weekend 

more memorable 

than you’ll ever 

know! My daughter 

and I were so 

moved by Milagro 

and ALL the animals 

that this shelter 

provides for, that we wanted to visit (yes from 

Iowa and yes we know we’re crazy!) and learn 

more about the Shelter. 

The staff set us up with the “Shelter 

Experience” and took time out of their busy 

work and personal days to share with us all that 

they do at the shelter. We stuffed “Kongs” and 

made “Pupsicles” and cut up the “Special Treats” 

(hot dogs). This may not sound important, 

but once you get to see the animals “Light Up” 

knowing what time it is when you open their 

doors for their afternoon treat, you realize that 

the little things ALL add up to SO MUCH for 

the animals in their quest for adoption to their 

permanent homes. 

We visited the clinic, where Milagro, Negra 

and “The Circle Dog” were staying (so cool to 

meet the animals that we read about!) and 

chatted with the staff and their work with the 

injured that come through their doors. 

Then we got the “Full Tour” (Dylan was 

fantastic, btw!) that showed us all aspects of the 

entire facility and all the workings from intake 

to adoption, that really go into the needs of the 

animals. How they work with Animal Control, 

Women’s Shelters, local people fostering, along 

with other Shelters to place these animals. 

These people LOVE what they do and it shows 

in the faces of every one of these animals! 

We loved it all and it will be a lasting 

memory for us both! Support this shelter in ANY 

way you can! IT MAKES A DIFFERENCE!!

Spring in New Mexico can be tough — one 

day it’s as warm as a summer day, while the 

next day the temperatures drop, along with 

needed precipitation. 

As we prepare our homes and property 

for the coming warm weather and brace for 

those sudden weather changes, it’s also a 

good time to consider the needs of our furry 

friends in both cold and hot temperatures. 

Many domestic animals lack adequate 

protection from weather and are susceptible 

to frostbite and heat stroke. 

In cold weather, be on the lookout for 

frostbite on susceptible areas of the body, 

such as ears and tails, and watch for signs of 

hypothermia — uncontrollable shivering, 

decreased heartbeat, weak pulse, stiff 

muscles, lack of coordination and pale or 

blue gums. In warm weather, watch that your 

pet doesn’t overheat and know the warning 

signs: excessive panting, difficulty breathing, 

drooling, mild weakness, stupor and even 

collapse. 

Here are some tips to keep your best 

friend safe: 

• Keep your companion animal indoors 

where he or she can be safe from the 

elements; 

• Provide extra food and water – animals 

burn more calories in the cold and need to 

hydrate in warm weather; 

• Never leave your dog or cat in a car 

during cold or hot weather. Vehicles can 

act like a refrigerator in cold weather and a 

furnace when it’s hot.
