Ontario, the northernmost village on<br />
the Kickapoo River in <strong>Vernon</strong> <strong>County</strong>, sits<br />
at the junction <strong>of</strong> Highways 131 and 33.<br />
It is a favorite destination for canoeists.<br />
Ontario <strong>of</strong>fers canoe rental for trips on<br />
the Kickapoo River. Many lodging options<br />
are available from B&Bs to cabins and<br />
camping. Just east on Hwy. 33 is Wildcat<br />
Mountain State Park, <strong>of</strong>fering camping<br />
and picnic areas, a canoe landing, trails for<br />
hiking, horseback riding and cross country<br />

Chaseburg<br />
Chaseburg is a charming town located<br />
southwest <strong>of</strong> Coon Valley on Highway 162.<br />
It features a downtown with restored log<br />
cabins and a converted stone schoolhouse<br />
to interest history and architecture buffs.<br />
Several restaurants make it a good place to<br />
stop for a meal. The town hosts SnoTrail<br />
Days, and is the home <strong>of</strong> the Heartland<br />

Villages <strong>of</strong> the<br />
Great River Road<br />
The Mississippi River borders<br />
the western edge <strong>of</strong> <strong>Vernon</strong> <strong>County</strong>.<br />
<strong>Wisconsin</strong> Highway 35 – the Great River<br />
Road – passes through the unique river<br />
towns <strong>of</strong> Desoto, Victory, Genoa and<br />
Stoddard. Majestic bluffs, scores <strong>of</strong> bald<br />
eagles, and flocks <strong>of</strong> migrating ducks are<br />
an outdoor lover’s delight. Three miles<br />
north <strong>of</strong> Desoto you will find Blackhawk<br />
Park on <strong>County</strong> Rd BI. Don’t miss the<br />
US Fish and Wildlife Service National Fish<br />
Hatchery south <strong>of</strong> Genoa. A scheduled tour<br />
is available - call 608-689-2605. Visit Lock<br />
and Dam #8 at Genoa and you might see<br />
a barge lock through. Great fishing, water<br />
sports, and famous catfish dinners are all<br />
part <strong>of</strong> river life. One mile north <strong>of</strong> Genoa<br />
is Old Settlers Overlook with a magnificent<br />
view <strong>of</strong> 3 states. Stoddard hosts a great<br />
walleye fishing tournament in April<br />
as well as a big Labor Day<br />
